According to the latest Designer's Comments, there must be a space at least 1/4 inch per figure on a base between bases. With four figures on a base, with two in the front rank, that means that there must be at least a 1/2" gap between bases for open order. The video makes it look like there is a maximum of maybe 1/4" between bases. Thus the battalion would be even farther spaced apart than they are in the video.
I have to admit, I don't measured the distance, but suppose that this will change little on a lagrer table till player do not use this gaps as advantage avore the opponent.
