I had a girlfriend that grew up in a small seacoast town in Brittany, France in the 60's. She said that she used to visit the only family that had a TV to watch. When I asked if she ever got to see any U.S. shows she laughed and sang the whole Zorro theme song in French 😮

American families still knew how to bond over the simplest of things, then. A "trick" I learned from a Fed agency. Stand on your front porch. Now, look to left (your side of street and scan the five closest homes, then across the street, the closest five homes as well), and then, to the right (do same scan, your side...). Now, how many last names of residents can you name of those twenty neighbors? See my point (reduced to a nation of neighborhood strangers)?

Being german, Brittas , born 1965. Before 1982/ 83 we had only two nationwide TV stations. While knowing some US TV western shows, in Germany with mostly a different name , i heared of Zorro for the first time in late 1970s.
I was a little boy when the show first aired and I got my costume for Christmas. Unfortunately, so did all of my friends. When we went out to show our presents, we looked like a murder of crows!
I ran home from my friends house to watch Zorro each week. I got a Zorro costume also for my birthday. I wore it every evening and pretended that I was Zorro with a plastic sword.
Zorro, Zorro, Zorro! I loved the show and had the record and Zorro comic books and toys. And it was an extra shame that when charismatic Guy Williams later moved on to Lost in Space, that the series turned into a silly showcase for Dr. Smith's over-the-top preening. Guy deserved better.
That's true as far as it goes. Guy did deserve better. But Lost in Space was a cheesy show when played straight. When they switched to comedy it was better.
"Bonanza" hired him when Pernell Roberts decided to leave the show. Guy had only filmed a couple of episodes then Roberts changed his mind, but demanded WIlliams' character be written out. I think Pernell saw that Williams would completely eclipse him. That after a season everyone would forget that "Adam" had ever existed. Roberts left after the next season anyway. Must have really pissed the producers off. That's when Willias was hired for "Lost in Space."
@@hecate235 Roberts decided to do one more season. I don't think he had a problem with Williams but Michael Landon did. Landon was pretty much running the show by this time because David Dortort was trying to get The High Chaparral on the air. Landon saw Williams as a rival.
My mother told me that I came home from school every day for three years and put on my Zorro cape, hat, mask, and rode around the neighborhood on my bike. She said she was worried I was strange.
Don't forget, the real Davy Crocket had a short life. How much license can you take with history? On a related note, Buddy Ebsen based his Jed Clampett character on George Russel, the role he played in Disney's "Davy Crockett."
Disney didn't cancel Davy Crockett. It was always intended as a three-part miniseries, following Crockett's life. However, in response to it's unexpected popularity, Disney did produce two more episodes, "Davy Crockett's Keelboat Race" and "Davy Crockett and the River Pirates."

So they made the show they were going to make except made it about Daniel Boone instead. Fess said he saw Walt at an NBC function and that Walt shook his hand and wished him well.
Me too!!! A childhood friend back then who has since passed away always claimed he had a scar on his forehead where I once made the mark of Zorro on him with a stick!! We used leftover trim wood my dad would throw out. Other kids use broomsticks. Never injured anyone or got injured. We were lucky. I also never lost. 🤣🤣🤣

I loved that show. I had a Zorro hat, Zorro mask, even a Zorro hand puppet. In fact, the show was so central to my childhood that I was surprised to learn that it lasted only two seasons. Thank you for sharing some of the background information (and for all the clips!).
I loved Zorro. I had delusions that I could also become a great swordsman. When Calif. state law required all students under 21 to take Phys Ed, even in Junior College, I took Fencing at LACC. I enjoyed the discipline, but never folowed it enough to become a Defender of the Pueblo.

I was about 5 when Zorro was aired and it immediately captured my imagination! Guy Williams was the absolute best Zorro EVER! My dad purchased a Zorro outfit for me, not much more than a plastic hat and a mask, and I would tie a towel around my neck as a cape and would gallop excitedly about the house reenacting that week's episode! I was crushed when my older brother cut the hat up into small pieces JUST OUT OF MEANNESS and I never forgave him! Occasionally I pull up old programs on UA-cam and remember what it was like to be 5 years old when my favorite show came on! Thank you for rekindling that feeling of nostalgia!
Unequivocably, Zorro was a great show whether you saw it in the mid-50s or later, and when I say later I mean all the way to present day. The acting, costumes, the interaction of characters, all is enjoyable today to kids and adults alike.
Disney did not exploit his TV offerings in the longrun. He seemed satisfied if a new show had good ratings, but bizarrely multiple seasons with huge syndication was not what he was shooting for. He not only short-sheeted Zorro, but he also screwed around Fess Parker's show, Annette's show and many others. Yes, he was earlier than most others to the marketplace, but acted as if he had no clue about what to do next.
Damn good observation. Just KILLED what could have w/o DOUBT been long term franchises, like Davy Crocket and D. Boone, Annette's show, which had unfulfilled potential I'd say.....it's almost like Walt had a surfeit of talent, and didn't know what to do with it. And evidently the last thing he wrote was, "Kurt Russell," one of his greatest talent discoveries. Mysterious world, eh?
As a young child I LOVED the Zorro show, I wouldn't miss a single one. My mother made me a Zorro costume for Halloween--I was hooked! My sword was a fishing rod.

I loved "Zorro" from day one and yes I had the costume and sword. I also loved "The Swamp Fox" (Leslie Nielsen), "Texas John Slaughter" (Tom Tryon), Elfego Baca (Robert Loggia), "Scarecrow of Romney Marsh (Patrick McGoohan), "Davy Crockett" (Fess Parker), and Daniel Boone" (Dewey Martin).
As a kid when that show came on I couldn’t wait for the next week to come around to watch another episode. Today’s series shows may have 6 to 10 shows in a season , Those shows then lasted from school starting all the way to summer school. This was a GREAT show and I always wondered why it went away.
I'm a 67 year old Puerto Rican man. I loved Zorro. I have worn Zorro costumes all of my life. And let me tell you -- that black, satin costume with a long cape and a beautiful black felt pillbox crown hat, is an instant "chick magnet"! I can't tell you how many times a woman would come up to me, and say, "My my my - you look very sexy and handsome in that outfit - Zorro!"❤️
My best friend in high school (1967) was from Puerto Rico. One of only three kids in an all white school. He was very popular and called himself Zorro!
As a kid, I loved Zorro. I had a Zorro lunch box and thermos, Zorro poster, Zorro puzzle, and Halloween costume. I got to watch them again as an adult and actually appreciate the costumes, scripts, sets, and the overall production. It’s too bad they were not shot in colour, or a full length movie made. On a side note, there’s also an episode of Lost in Space where Guy Williams gets to sword fight with electrified swords.
As a grade school kid, I watched every show I could. Actually, Zorro was my first fictional hero . Guy Williams was perfect, even better than Bandaras.
Here's an interesting note. In the 1990s IIRC, Malibu Comics did a "Lost in Space" run where the crew of the Jupiter II finally get to Alpha Centauri, and some shocking revelations occured, such as who Dr. Smith's "employers" were. The aliens separate the crew and transport them to different planets planets. Don and Judy end up on a jungle planet and go Adam and Eve, I forget were Will, Dr. Smith, and the Robot end up, but Penny, Mrs. Robinson, and Professor Robinson end up on a planet that resembles Spanish California and you can guess what happened.
When I was a little kid (saw it first-run) I loved it. Have not seen it since, tho in the 60s I had a Zorro costume. But these clips still look fresh, not least because of Guy Williams. Talk about bringing a character to life...
I can remember when my mom made me a Zorro costume for Halloween one year. I must have been six or seven at that time. She loved to sew and made clothes for all of us kids.

You can find both the full series and the theatrical cut on UA-cam. Well worth watching. Patrick McGoohan played Scarecrow. The TV episodes also featured Walt introducing the story and claiming it was based on a true story, which it wasn't-it was based on a series of fictional novels-but it was filmed at the actual locations mentioned in the story.
I watched Zorro in the 60's in reruns and tried for years to rewatch it whenever it came on . over the years. Finally managed to obtain the whole series and always watch it in order from beginning to end.
I recall seeing Zorro in the early 1960s in reruns as a child. In the year 2005, I started watching it again on the Disney Channel late night. I was pleased that the elements of the writing, directing, and acting still held up well when viewing it with my adult sensibilities; as there are many examples of 1950s TV shows, when aired as 21st century reruns, that came across being flat and hokey.

I remember that i saw in ZDF TV station in late 1970s for the first time a TV show, in which Zorro appeared, was then clearly visible, rather old, i don' t remember, which one it was, was shown on friday at 18 :30 . The phenomeon you describe, is also wellknown two me. Possible by UA-cam, i sometimes watch old TV shows, i liked in 1970s. You remember it with a touch of nostalgia, but when you see it again after decades, you are a bit dissappeared.
To this day, Zorro was and is my favorite costumed hero. In "The Curse of Capistrano" (later re-titled "The Mark of Zorro"), Zorro's costume was described as "purple." I interpret that to mean dark indigo, which is less visible at night than black is. Of the three Zorro novels I've read, the best by far was "Zorro," written by a native-Spanish-speaking romance writer named Isabel Allende, only in this case, fortunately, it wasn't a romance novel, and it was in English. (She stood on the shoulders of a giant, Johnston McCulley.) Thanks for the memories.

I was in third grade and Zorro my favorite show. The one night in the school week I was allowed to stay up an extra half hour to watch TV. I was crushed when it was canceled.
I watched Zorro as a child in the 60's but couldn't remember much. A couple of years ago I rewatched the entire series on UA-cam and enjoyed it very much. Agree with everything you said: Guy Williams was perfect in the role, the supporting cast was great and the writing was excelent, far better than anything we get today. It's a pity there were only 2 seasons, I think it has potential for a lot more.
😊I also think it had the potential even though I'm a fan of only 1-13 episodes. I like the conflict between Zorro & Monastario. I would be happy to watch it develop through 82 episodes and more.

I watch Zorro first runs as a child. We did not have a TV so every Wednesday evening I would watch Zorro at my cousin's house. Zorro without a doubt is my favorite Super Hero over Batman, Superman or even Captain America because Zorro has the greatest power of all - He gave the people Hope!
This video is completely made-up nonsense. Walt canceled Zorro and the Mickey Mouse Club for the same reason -- ABC was too cheap to broadcast them in color. When his contract with ABC expired in 1961, he signed with NBC and changed the name of the show he hosted to Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color. His point was not lost on anybody.
I was 9 years old when this ran, and I ADORED this show. Guy Williams was absolutely PERFECT for that role, and that's plain to see. Garcia was a standout in an excellently cast show, and, as a kid, what truly grabbed me were the sword duels. I always wondered why it ended so soon. Thanks for posting this. Why doesn't some one buy the rights and remake this? BTW: Is Zorro the reason I ended up living in San DIEGO??? Hmmm?
Next to "The Adventures of Superman", Zorro was my all time favorite TV show. Mickey Mouse Club or Howdy Doody compete for 3rd place. I still know the Zorro theme song by hear - almost 70 years later!

You're not kidding! While I loved the Zorro series (I remember the re-runs from the 1960s) the 1940 film "The Mark Of Zorro" with Tyrone Power is the definative Zorro presentation. AND the climactic duel between Tyrone and Basil Rathbone is superb!
..when I was in 3rd grade (1957 - 58), I was obsessed with Zorro..I didn't steal any car antennas but used plenty of sticks ..I put a small..very small 'z' on the cloak room wall and my supposed buddy, Jimmy cheese me to the teacher. Mrs Burke..luckily she never said anything to my mom and dad after Sunday Mass that week...there were many Zorro toys ( swords, masks and hats)...

Walt never expected Davy Crockett to be a smash hit. After all, Fess Parker was a total unknown when cast. Disney initially only made three episodes, but after the unexpected success, made a fourth episode, the comical "Davy Crockett and the River Pirates." Since Davy had been killed off in the episode about the Alamo, Walt wasn't sure if a lot of new episodes would be financially viable. Davy Crockett was a fad, like hula hoops. Walt was probably unsure of investing millions of dollars in production costs for an expensive color tv show that might prove a short term fad. A few years later, Batman and the Monkees were hugely popular fads in 1966, but the public soon tired of the silly antics, and the 2 shows were cancelled in 1968 because of low ratings. Walt had made a tremendous financial gamble with Disneyland, and couldn't have been sure that it wouldn't bankrupt him. Walt insisted that each tv show and movie pay for itself. ABC was the ugly step-sister of the tv networks. It had by far the fewest stations, and was the lowest rated network. It could charge advertisers less money for ads on ABC. Disney's shows would have been more profitable on CBS or NBC. Zorro was expensive for its time. When ABC refused Walt's demands for more money for Zorro, he cancelled the show. Walt moved his Sunday night tv show to NBC, where it was very successful. Remember that in the late 1950's ABC was mainly low budget black and white westerns staring previously. unknown actors who were paid very little by Hollywood standards. Disney was a tight fisted businessman, who didn't take huge risks financially on long shots.
Oh, yeah, I was a huge fan of Zorro! My surname starts with a ''Z" so I was personally involved! My mom made me the best Zorro costume for Halloween one of those two years and I was stylin'! This is the first time in 57 years I've seen anything about that series! What a flashback - and the theme song all came back just now!
In the late mid and late 60's I all the boys in the neighborhood ran home at 7pm on Fridays to watch reruns of Zorro. Zorro along with Sundays Wonderful World of Disney was must watch TV. As many of our Boomer Generation going to the movies (Drive-in theater) as a whole family to watch Disney movies, and viewing Disney shows on TV was a staple in the American culture. In my 60s now, I've introduce my grandkids to many of the Disney movies and shows through Disney+.

It is interesting to peek behind the curtain on this odd decision but it seems to lack so much logic that, to me at least, it seems like we are still missing a key piece in Walt's thinking. I watched and loved Zorro as a child, and bought all of the Dell comic books as well, with art by the great Alex Toth. I had expected it to go on and on, like the Lone Ranger, which i had first listened to on radio with Brace Beemer and then watched on TV with Clayton Moore. I was a very loyal Zorro fan and i was very hurt when the show was canceled. i felt let down, even betrayed.
A Zarro fan in the 1950s I made my own Zarro costume for Halloween in the 5th grade. As a high school student, I engraved a Zippo lighter with a Z as sword strokes like the mark of Zarro.
Grew up watching Zorro! Then at 47 moved to California in Ojai close to Santa Barbara and got to visit the Presidio , the Spanish Fort the mystical character was always attacking .
My family loved the Davy Crockett theme song, which I still remember: "Born on a mountain top in Tennessee, Greenest state in the Land of the Free, Raised in the woods so he knew every tree, Kilt him a b'ar when he was only three. Davy, Davy Crockett, King of the wild Frontier." Or as my parents liked to sing, "Walter, Walter Cronkite, King of the wild back nose." (Front-ear hehe)
I had a big slashed Z on my notebook in the 3rd grade. I loved watching Zorro. There was also a movie that ran in theaters. I saw that too. It was so popular, you could point your finger and make the slashing sound three times while making a Z in the air and everyone knew what it was.
As a native Californian bon in 1948, I eagerly watched each episode of Zorro, even though it was set in Los Angeles and I'm from Northern California. I didn't know until now why it wasn't renewed for additional seasons.
One of my favorite shows as a young boy along with all the cowboy shows including the Cisco Kid and Davy Crockett. I still have my suede fringe jacket my mother bought me when I was in first grade and my raccoon (really rabbit) hat. Zorro was awesome and Guy Williams was at his best as well as the other actors…
Watched another video about Zorro's cancellation with a very different perspective: Walt personally cancelled the series because he was afraid interest in the show was beginning to die out and didn't want to see that happen. Personally that one doesn't pass the smell test; the show was super-popular and surely could've sustained another season or two just based on its popularity before interest in it started dropping - but what I read years ago was the cancellation of the series was based on Walt moving his "Disneyland" TV show from ABC to NBC, and ABC (sorry, I originally said NBC, just corrected my stoopid error) refused to give up its contract to run it - a situation where a lawsuit would've made a lot more sense.
I loved Zorro. For my seventh birthday, I got a Zorro costume consisting of a mask, hat and cape. I was ecstatic. I still enjoy the adventures today on DVD.
Watched it in the 70’s in Guatemala in Spanish, which technically would’ve been the language. 😊 continued to watch when I moved to the States. What a fun show. All actors were perfectly cast, and I still measure all subsequent Zorros to Guy Williams. Thanks for the memories. Gracias Zorro!
Zorro was my first love! It was one of the only TV shows I watched when I was a little girl. I found an address book and under Z, I listed a phone number for Zorro, under D for Don Diego, and under G for Guy Williams. I was lucky I had three first loves! What a phenomenal show this was. The energy was amazing and it was so incredibly well cast. I know I’ve seen every episode at least six or seven times over, and my boys grew up on it as well! Have never seen a smile like the smile Zorro had!
I totally missed the Disney Zorro! I was born in late 1957! Also, until 1969 we only had 1 channel, CBS, Black and White. And, unlike most other 1950s and 1960s, the DVDs of Zorro are outrageously expensive! Over $200 on Average for a season or half a season.
When you say something like Walt was fighting ABC in court, it would be really nice to know what that was about; just a sentence or two would've added some context instead leaving me wondering "what was that about?"
He made the right decision. Took care of a mass of troubles that he understood would get worse, Headed for the nearest exit. You said that the whole matter was exclusively in Disney's hands, and capable hands they were. He knew that a void would be there, but he also knew how he could "fill" the void quickly and move on, and so it was. Just recently I was telling my daughter that Guy Williams will always be THE Zorro to me. I thought he was so handsome and I was only in elementary school. Back then we didn’t know the word “sexy” or I would have called him that! Loved that show even in reruns.

Guy Williams was great as Professor John Robinson on Irwin Allen's Lost in Space and even had the chance to do some sword fighting twice on that series.
Watched the reruns back in the day, and I very much had big feelings watching this segment, with many faces I remember well but have not seen in 60 years.
Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside California, was the setting for some of the Zorro episodes. I feel so lucky to live just a few minutes away. The skull and crossbones that Disney added to the cemetery’s entryway (for the show), is still there today! My daughter was baptized at the mission and was the fiesta princess recently and yes, I had her watch the zorro episodes of course. :)
I had a neat Zorro sword with a piece of chalk attached to the stabbing end. I got into trouble for Zorro-ing a Z onto a favorite piece of my mom's dining room furniture.
I saw Zorro as both first run and in reruns , at much more sophisticated age of four or five. My first souvenirs from Disneyland were a Zorro hat and sword, the most dangerous blade I've ever owned, 1950's-60's brittle plastic, broke with every thrust. I'm 69 and finished a swordmanship convention. Zorro started my lifelong passion with the sword.

The Artificial channels mispronounce names, substitute photographs with the wrong people and flat out get the stories just wrong half the time.

That's true as far as it goes. Guy did deserve better. But Lost in Space was a cheesy show when played straight. When they switched to comedy it was better.
Guy Williams was so handsome and so talented. I loved him as Zorro.
A very wise decision
"Bonanza" hired him when Pernell Roberts decided to leave the show. Guy had only filmed a couple of episodes then Roberts changed his mind, but demanded WIlliams' character be written out. I think Pernell saw that Williams would completely eclipse him. That after a season everyone would forget that "Adam" had ever existed. Roberts left after the next season anyway. Must have really pissed the producers off.
That's when Willias was hired for "Lost in Space."
@@hecate235 Roberts decided to do one more season. I don't think he had a problem with Williams but Michael Landon did. Landon was pretty much running the show by this time because David Dortort was trying to get The High Chaparral on the air. Landon saw Williams as a rival.
My mother told me that I came home from school every day for three years and put on my Zorro cape, hat, mask, and rode around the neighborhood on my bike. She said she was worried I was strange.

Disney also cancelled Davy Crockett - not having a clue it had become a major success. Sometimes, Uncle Walt missed clues.
Don't forget, the real Davy Crocket had a short life. How much license can you take with history?
On a related note, Buddy Ebsen based his Jed Clampett character on George Russel, the role he played in Disney's "Davy Crockett."
Disney didn't cancel Davy Crockett. It was always intended as a three-part miniseries, following Crockett's life. However, in response to it's unexpected popularity, Disney did produce two more episodes, "Davy Crockett's Keelboat Race" and "Davy Crockett and the River Pirates."
It was a three-episode mini-series on his show. Was never supposed to be ongoing.

So they made the show they were going to make except made it about Daniel Boone instead. Fess said he saw Walt at an NBC function and that Walt shook his hand and wished him well.
I loved this show even today. It was classy and Guy Williams made a handsome Zorro.
One of my earliest memories was watching Zorro on television starring Guy Williams almost 65 years ago.
I'm currently 71 yo, enjoyed watching Zorro and it's reruns when I was a kid and will still watch them if I find them on TV.

We used leftover trim wood my dad would throw out. Other kids use broomsticks. Never injured anyone or got injured. We were lucky. I also never lost. 🤣🤣🤣

I loved that show. I had a Zorro hat, Zorro mask, even a Zorro hand puppet. In fact, the show was so central to my childhood that I was surprised to learn that it lasted only two seasons. Thank you for sharing some of the background information (and for all the clips!).
I loved Zorro. I had delusions that I could also become a great swordsman. When Calif. state law required all students under 21 to take Phys Ed, even in Junior College, I took Fencing at LACC. I enjoyed the discipline, but never folowed it enough to become a Defender of the Pueblo.

I was about 5 when Zorro was aired and it immediately captured my imagination! Guy Williams was the absolute best Zorro EVER! My dad purchased a Zorro outfit for me, not much more than a plastic hat and a mask, and I would tie a towel around my neck as a cape and would gallop excitedly about the house reenacting that week's episode! I was crushed when my older brother cut the hat up into small pieces JUST OUT OF MEANNESS and I never forgave him! Occasionally I pull up old programs on UA-cam and remember what it was like to be 5 years old when my favorite show came on! Thank you for rekindling that feeling of nostalgia!
Unequivocably, Zorro was a great show whether you saw it in the mid-50s or later, and when I say later I mean all the way to present day. The acting, costumes, the interaction of characters, all is enjoyable today to kids and adults alike.
Disney did not exploit his TV offerings in the longrun. He seemed satisfied if a new show had good ratings, but bizarrely multiple seasons with huge syndication was not what he was shooting for. He not only short-sheeted Zorro, but he also screwed around Fess Parker's show, Annette's show and many others. Yes, he was earlier than most others to the marketplace, but acted as if he had no clue about what to do next.
Damn good observation. Just KILLED what could have w/o DOUBT been long term franchises, like Davy Crocket and D. Boone, Annette's show, which had unfulfilled potential I'd say.....it's almost like Walt had a surfeit of talent, and didn't know what to do with it. And evidently the last thing he wrote was, "Kurt Russell," one of his greatest talent discoveries.

As a young child I LOVED the Zorro show, I wouldn't miss a single one. My mother made me a Zorro costume for Halloween--I was hooked! My sword was a fishing rod.
Zorro was the first of a very few TV shows that hooked me, instantly, the first time I ever saw it. I was 7 when it debuted.
Thanks for this video. I loved Zorro. In fact, I colorized the series for Disney in the early 90’s. It was one of the highest quality colorization projects ever produced. The company was American Film Technologies (AFT).

I loved "Zorro" from day one and yes I had the costume and sword. I also loved "The Swamp Fox" (Leslie Nielsen), "Texas John Slaughter" (Tom Tryon), Elfego Baca (Robert Loggia), "Scarecrow of Romney Marsh (Patrick McGoohan), "Davy Crockett" (Fess Parker), and Daniel Boone" (Dewey Martin).

As a kid when that show came on I couldn’t wait for the next week to come around to watch another episode. Today’s series shows may have 6 to 10 shows in a season , Those shows then lasted from school starting all the way to summer school. This was a GREAT show and I always wondered why it went away.

I'm a 67 year old Puerto Rican man. I loved Zorro. I have worn Zorro costumes all of my life. And let me tell you -- that black, satin costume with a long cape and a beautiful black felt pillbox crown hat, is an instant "chick magnet"! I can't tell you how many times a woman would come up to me, and say, "My my my - you look very sexy and handsome in that outfit - Zorro!"❤️
My best friend in high school (1967) was from Puerto Rico. One of only three kids in an all white school. He was very popular and called himself Zorro!
As a kid, I loved Zorro. I had a Zorro lunch box and thermos, Zorro poster, Zorro puzzle, and Halloween costume. I got to watch them again as an adult and actually appreciate the costumes, scripts, sets, and the overall production. It’s too bad they were not shot in colour, or a full length movie made.
On a side note, there’s also an episode of Lost in Space where Guy Williams gets to sword fight with electrified swords.
As a grade school kid, I watched every show I could. Actually, Zorro was my first fictional hero . Guy Williams was perfect, even better than Bandaras.

Here's an interesting note. In the 1990s IIRC, Malibu Comics did a "Lost in Space" run where the crew of the Jupiter II finally get to Alpha Centauri, and some shocking revelations occured, such as who Dr. Smith's "employers" were. The aliens separate the crew and transport them to different planets planets. Don and Judy end up on a jungle planet and go Adam and Eve, I forget were Will, Dr. Smith, and the Robot end up, but Penny, Mrs. Robinson, and Professor Robinson end up on a planet that resembles Spanish California and you can guess what happened.
When I was a little kid (saw it first-run) I loved it.
Have not seen it since, tho in the 60s I had a Zorro costume.
But these clips still look fresh, not least because of Guy Williams. Talk about bringing a character to life...

@@charlesbennett7484 It consisted of 4 one-hour episodes, which were also edited together to make a feature film, most of the trimming was scenes from the first episode. You can find both the full series and the theatrical cut on UA-cam. Well worth watching. Patrick McGoohan played Scarecrow. The TV episodes also featured Walt introducing the story and claiming it was based on a true story, which it wasn't-it was based on a series of fictional novels-but it was filmed at the actual locations mentioned in the story.

I watched Zorro in the 60's in reruns and tried for years to rewatch it whenever it came on . over the years. Finally managed to obtain the whole series and always watch it in order from beginning to end.
I have all of "Have Gun, Will Travel", but with streaming content being profuse and ubiquitous I hardly watch them.
I recall seeing Zorro in the early 1960s in reruns as a child.
In the year 2005, I started watching it again on the Disney Channel late night.
I was pleased that the elements of the writing, directing, and acting still held up well when viewing it with my adult sensibilities; as there are many examples of 1950s TV shows, when aired as 21st century reruns, that came across being flat and hokey.
I am german, Brittas boyfriend, was born 1965. Before 1982 there had been only two nationwide TV stations. I remember that i saw in ZDF TV station in late 1970s for the first time a TV show, in which Zorro appeared, was then clearly visible, rather old, i don' t remember, which one it was, was shown on friday at 18 :30 .
The phenomeon you describe, is also wellknown two me. Possible by UA-cam, i sometimes watch old TV shows, i liked in 1970s. You remember it with a touch of nostalgia, but when you see it again after decades, you are a bit dissappeared.
To this day, Zorro was and is my favorite costumed hero. In "The Curse of Capistrano" (later re-titled "The Mark of Zorro"), Zorro's costume was described as "purple." I interpret that to mean dark indigo, which is less visible at night than black is. Of the three Zorro novels I've read, the best by far was "Zorro," written by a native-Spanish-speaking romance writer named Isabel Allende, only in this case, fortunately, it wasn't a romance novel, and it was in English. (She stood on the shoulders of a giant, Johnston McCulley.) Thanks for the memories.

I was 1 of those kid who watched it in the 60s loved it , and memorized the theme
I was in third grade and Zorro my favorite show. The one night in the school week I was allowed to stay up an extra half hour to watch TV. I was crushed when it was canceled.
I watched Zorro as a child in the 60's but couldn't remember much. A couple of years ago I rewatched the entire series on UA-cam and enjoyed it very much. Agree with everything you said: Guy Williams was perfect in the role, the supporting cast was great and the writing was excelent, far better than anything we get today. It's a pity there were only 2 seasons, I think it has potential for a lot more.
😊I also think it had the potential even though I'm a fan of only 1-13 episodes. I like the conflict between Zorro & Monastario. I would be happy to watch it develop through 82 episodes and more.
As a child I had a Zorro sword with chalk in the end, so you could leave the Z on a wall.

This video is completely made-up nonsense. Walt canceled Zorro and the Mickey Mouse Club for the same reason -- ABC was too cheap to broadcast them in color. When his contract with ABC expired in 1961, he signed with NBC and changed the name of the show he hosted to Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color. His point was not lost on anybody.

I was 9 years old when this ran, and I ADORED this show. Guy Williams was absolutely PERFECT for that role, and that's plain to see. Garcia was a standout in an excellently cast show, and, as a kid, what truly grabbed me were the sword duels. I always wondered why it ended so soon. Thanks for posting this.

Next to "The Adventures of Superman", Zorro was my all time favorite TV show. Mickey Mouse Club or Howdy Doody compete for 3rd place. I still know the Zorro theme song by hear - almost 70 years later!

You're not kidding! While I loved the Zorro series (I remember the re-runs from the 1960s) the 1940 film "The Mark Of Zorro" with Tyrone Power is the definative Zorro presentation. AND the climactic duel between Tyrone and Basil Rathbone is superb!

..when I was in 3rd grade (1957 - 58), I was obsessed with Zorro..I didn't steal any car antennas but used plenty of sticks ..I put a small..very small 'z' on the cloak room wall and my supposed buddy, Jimmy cheese me to the teacher. Mrs Burke..luckily she never said anything to my mom and dad after Sunday Mass that week...there were many Zorro toys ( swords, masks and hats)...

Walt never expected Davy Crockett to be a smash hit. After all, Fess Parker was a total unknown when cast. Disney initially only made three episodes, but after the unexpected success, made a fourth episode, the comical "Davy Crockett and the River Pirates." Since Davy had been killed off in the episode about the Alamo, Walt wasn't sure if a lot of new episodes would be financially viable. Davy Crockett was a fad, like hula hoops. Walt was probably unsure of investing millions of dollars in production costs for an expensive color tv show that might prove a short term fad. A few years later, Batman and the Monkees were hugely popular fads in 1966, but the public soon tired of the silly antics, and the 2 shows were cancelled in 1968 because of low ratings. Walt had made a tremendous financial gamble with Disneyland, and couldn't have been sure that it wouldn't bankrupt him. Walt insisted that each tv show and movie pay for itself. ABC was the ugly step-sister of the tv networks. It had by far the fewest stations, and was the lowest rated network. It could charge advertisers less money for ads on ABC. Disney's shows would have been more profitable on CBS or NBC. Zorro was expensive for its time. When ABC refused Walt's demands for more money for Zorro, he cancelled the show. Walt moved his Sunday night tv show to NBC, where it was very successful. Remember that in the late 1950's ABC was mainly low budget black and white westerns staring previously. unknown actors who were paid very little by Hollywood standards. Disney was a tight fisted businessman, who didn't take huge risks financially on long shots.
I watched the Disney Zorro from around 1996-1999 when it aired on the Disney Channel.
Oh, yeah, I was a huge fan of Zorro! My surname starts with a ''Z" so I was personally involved! My mom made me the best Zorro costume for Halloween one of those two years and I was stylin'! This is the first time in 57 years I've seen anything about that series! What a flashback - and the theme song all came back just now!

In the late mid and late 60's I all the boys in the neighborhood ran home at 7pm on Fridays to watch reruns of Zorro. Zorro along with Sundays Wonderful World of Disney was must watch TV. As many of our Boomer Generation going to the movies (Drive-in theater) as a whole family to watch Disney movies, and viewing Disney shows on TV was a staple in the American culture. In my 60s now, I've introduce my grandkids to many of the Disney movies and shows through Disney+.
This was Walt's best idea. Zorro should have run 2 more years, even if his park would have suffered.

It is interesting to peek behind the curtain on this odd decision but it seems to lack so much logic that, to me at least, it seems like we are still missing a key piece in Walt's thinking. Perhaps I am over-thinking it myself? Whatever the reason, I suspect that there are few viewers watching your piece here that don't wish the show had continued on. Keep up the good work.
I watched and loved Zorro as a child, and bought all of the Dell comic books as well, with art by the great Alex Toth. I had expected it to go on and on, like the Lone Ranger, which i had first listened to on radio with Brace Beemer and then watched on TV with Clayton Moore. I was a very loyal Zorro fan and i was very hurt when the show was canceled. i felt let down, even betrayed.
A Zarro fan in the 1950s I made my own Zarro costume for Halloween in the 5th grade.
As a high school student, I engraved a Zippo lighter with a Z as sword strokes like the mark of Zarro.

Then at 47 moved to California in Ojai close to Santa Barbara and got to visit the Presidio , the Spanish Fort the mystical character was always attacking .
Walt did the same thing probably worse with the Davy Crockett series. Fess Parker wanted to keep the role going

My family loved the Davy Crockett theme song, which I still remember:

And they both were filmed at the Iverson Movie Ranch in Chatsworth, California.
I had a big slashed Z on my notebook in the 3rd grade. I loved watching Zorro. There was also a movie that ran in theaters. I saw that too. It was so popular, you could point your finger and make the slashing sound three times while making a Z in the air and everyone knew what it was.
As a native Californian bon in 1948, I eagerly watched each episode of Zorro, even though it was set in Los Angeles and I'm from Northern California. I didn't know until now why it wasn't renewed for additional seasons.

One of my favorite shows as a young boy along with all the cowboy shows including the Cisco Kid and Davy Crockett. Watched another video about Zorro's cancellation with a very different perspective: Walt personally cancelled the series because he was afraid interest in the show was beginning to die out and didn't want to see that happen.
Personally that one doesn't pass the smell test; the show was super-popular and surely could've sustained another season or two just based on its popularity before interest in it started dropping - but what I read years ago was the cancellation of the series was based on Walt moving his "Disneyland" TV show from ABC to NBC, and ABC (sorry, I originally said NBC, just corrected my stoopid error) refused to give up its contract to run it - a situation where a lawsuit would've made a lot more sense.

Zorro was my first love! It was one of the only TV shows I watched when I was a little girl. I found an address book and under Z, I listed a phone number for Zorro, under D for Don Diego, and under G for Guy Williams. I was lucky I had three first loves! What a phenomenal show this was. The energy was amazing and it was so incredibly well cast. I know I’ve seen every episode at least six or seven times over, and my boys grew up on it as well! Have never seen a smile like the smile Zorro had!

I totally missed the Disney Zorro! I was born in late 1957! Also, until 1969 we only had 1 channel, CBS, Black and White. And, unlike most other 1950s and 1960s, the DVDs of Zorro are outrageously expensive! Over $200 on Average for a season or half a season.
When you say something like Walt was fighting ABC in court, it would be really nice to know what that was about; just a sentence or two would've added some context instead leaving me wondering "what was that about?"
He made the right decision. Took care of a mass of troubles that he understood would get worse, Headed for the nearest exit. You said that the whole matter was exclusively in Disney's hands, and capable hands they were. He knew that a void would be there, but he also knew how he could "fill" the void quickly and move on, and so it was. Simple times, when he played things close to the Bosom, didn't have to get approval of 40 people .Thanks, very interesting and sensible things you put on ! 🌈Kudos !

Just recently I was telling my daughter that Guy Williams will always be THE Zorro to me. I thought he was so handsome and I was only in elementary school. Back then we didn’t know the word “sexy” or I would have called him that! Loved that show even in reruns.
I had forgotten about this series since it has not been rerun on TV in a long time. But seeing this Vlog rekindled my memory of how good of a rendition of Zorro it really was. Enjoyed every one of the episodes that I watched. Can you explain why it is not in replay on some TV channel today?????

That was such a great show. I was always sorry it left so soon. Now, decades later, I know why.
Guy Williams was great as Professor John Robinson on Irwin Allen's Lost in Space and even had the chance to do some sword fighting twice on that series.
Watched the reruns back in the day, and I very much had big feelings watching this segment, with many faces I remember well but have not seen in 60 years.
Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside California, was the setting for some of the Zorro episodes. I feel so lucky to live just a few minutes away. The skull and crossbones that Disney added to the cemetery’s entryway (for the show), is still there today! My daughter was baptized at the mission and was the fiesta princess recently and yes, I had her watch the zorro episodes of course. :)
I had a neat Zorro sword with a piece of chalk attached to the stabbing end. I got into trouble for Zorro-ing a Z onto a favorite piece of my mom's dining room furniture.
I didn't know that Guy Williams was actually of Sicilian descent and that his real name was Armando Joseph Catalano.

It looks like some of the outdoor shots for Zorro was filmed at the same movie ranch as The Lone Ranger. It's between Chatsworth and Simi Valley.
I saw Zorro as both first run and in reruns , at much more sophisticated age of four or five. My first souvenirs from Disneyland were a Zorro hat and sword, the most dangerous blade I've ever owned, 1950's-60's brittle plastic, broke with every thrust. I'm 69 and finished a swordmanship convention. Zorro started my lifelong passion with the sword.
