John of course. Why did he called himself the loved disciple? Because John knew with his heart how much JESUS loved him, that's why he called himself that. He accepted and understood the love of JESUS with his heart. We all should do that and call ourselves the disciples that are loved by JESUS ♥️🙌🏼✝️🤗

@@mochiyomi7464 A student is a disciple. Jesus had more than the twelve disciples, whom became apostles. And besides Mary, and Martha, the only other people it says Jesus loved is the rich young man, Lazarus, and the disciple whom Jesus loved. The only person in the Gospel of "John" that the writer says is loved, besides the author, Mary and Martha, is Lazarus. It literally tells you who the testimony is from. The rich young man in Mark is also said to be loved, after Jesus looks at him. This is unique. The disciple who follows Jesus into the High Priests house, and is known by the High Priests, is not identified, yet he has more courage than Peter. When they try to grab the man all he had on was a linen cloth, if you look at the word for the linen cloth it is particularly a linen robe that the wealthy dead(like what the rich young man would be buried in) are buried in., and he ran off naked. The other disciples were not identified by the High Priest and co easily, until, after Christ's resurrection, Acts. But they did know who Lazarus was, since because of Lazarus' resurrection did the High Priest prophesy that Jesus must die for the sake of Israel without realizing he did, which began there adamant attempts to catch Jesus. It also says they wanted to kill Lazarus in addition to Jesus. The parable of the rich man and Lazarus refers to the rich man wearing purple and a linen shirt(thats the high priest), the actual High Priest also has several brethren who variously exchanged the High Priest position(they were all inter-related through marriage in the least), and the parable's rich man wants to send a message to his brethren but Abraham reproves him and tells him if they did not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they won't believe someone who is resurrected either. The reason why this is important is because the High priest and his brethren were Sadducees and Sadducees did not believe in an afterlife, the immortality of the soul, and they also, alongside others, tended to believe if you were afflicted by say sores or leprosy than it was god given in your life. Lazarus came out of his tomb bound in grave cloths, I'd bet he had sores or leprosy just like the Lazarus in the "Parable"(Ever see a parable name someone?). The parable says they would not be swayed by a man resurrected from the dead since they believed not Moses and the Prophets, the actual brethren of the High Priest were not convinced by either the resurrection of Lazarus or Jesus. Lazarus is Eleazar and means God is my help. Jesus is Yeshua and means YHWH saves or YHWH is my salvation. Isn't that amazing? Eleazar was the son of Aaron, Moses's brother. Miriam was the sister of Moses. Mary, Martha, and Lazarus were probably priestly descendants of Aaron, and lived in Bethany, were probably wealthier(Rich young man=Lazarus, and Magdalene annointed Jesus feet with some expensive oil.) This is why the High Priest and others knew them whereas they did not know John or the others so much. Furthermore, Lazarus in the parable layed in Abrahams bosom(this is both a metaphor for the place of the comforted dead in Hades/Sheol, and in the parables story literal), and the resurrected Lazarus layed in Jesus' bosom because He was the disciple whom Jesus loved. Towards the end of the Gospel of "John" Peter asks how the disciple whom Jesus loves will die, and Jesus says "What is it to you if he tarries until I come?" and a rumor spread about how this disciple would not die, but it says Jesus did not say he would not die. Now, why would that rumor spread, and, further, what would be a good reason for Peter to wonder how that disciple would die? Could it be perhaps because that disciple had already died? :)
[Jhn 21:21-24 KJV] 21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what [shall] this man [do]? 22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what [is that] to thee? follow thou me. 23 Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what [is that] to thee? 24 This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and WE know that his testimony is true.
Sounds to me like the "Gospel of John" was put together by more than one person, it also ascribed to John by tradition. Perhaps that tradition is correct, but the "Gospel of John" differentiates between whom the testimony is from and they who wrote it down.
Want to know why the Gospel of John is unique compared to the synoptic gospels? Because the person who testified to it had a unique experience with Jesus, which yielded a unique faith and love, the key to all, and what is more eye opening than being the one who was resurrected? What would give more faith, courage, and love in our Lord Jesus Christ to follow after Him even to persecution and arrest like the disciple who followed Jesus after his arrest and left his linen grave robe? Or give one such faith to believe He rose, after racing Peter to the tomb and seeing it empty, immediately believing that He rose?
May the Father bless you and all in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ! Amen! and remember always, Acts 2:38.

[Rom 1:22-32 KJV] 22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. 24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. 26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. 28 And even as they did not like to retain God in [their] knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; 29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: 32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
[Act 2:37-38 KJV] 37 Now when they heard [this], they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men [and] brethren, what shall we do? 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

John is a wonderful example of someone who truly found his identity to be “the disciple whom Jesus loved.”
This has been a freeing truth for me in my own walk with Jesus. I, too, am the disciple whom Jesus loves. In a world competing for our identity, we as believers must have ours rooted in Christ alone

I think John being the one whom Jesus loved is an indicator of his age. I genuinely believe he was by far the youngest disciple. Being the youngest, he would be looked after and protected (after a brotherly sort) by all the other disciples, and especially by Jesus. I think this also explains why he lived so long into the first century, because he was younger. Lots of Dore's art on the Bible depicts Saint John as a rather young and fresh-faced looking man.

Jesus's love for John was, amongst other reasons, to preserve him for the task ahead; to reveal a glimpse of the events of the second coming of Christ and until he was done, he was not meant to die.
The question is, what lessons can we learn from the life John lived?

It always seemed to me like John did this out of humility. Not wanting to seem self-serving by referring to himself in any way, he kept himself in third-person and unnamed, yet included phrases like “whom Jesus loved” to prevent the notion that John’s lack of description in his own testimony was based on a lack of affection towards him by Jesus or the writer.

Thank you Pastor John, Tony Reinke, and all the servants of Desiring God. Your ministry is very thorough, loving and effective for the kingdom of God!
Praise the LORD! For His work is marvelous!!
At first I wondered why answering such a question. Because it almost seems like it can be assumed, or be rooted as a shallow statement. However, listening to this podcast humbled me, in the sense that certain facts formulated in specific ways are loaded with meaning and value.
The last 6 months I trained an exegesis coarse, using Douglas Stuart's work as a foundation. On my practicals my text was 1 John. 4, and pericope 1 John 4:7-5:4.
The point is that I had to do an intensive word-study on 'love' as a key to understand the passage. Something that was extremely noteworthy, was that John's meaning of love is mostly a condescending love.
What this means is that the love comes from a place of status, high worth or honour. This love is shown to a place of low status, unworthy and 'honourlessness'.
In John's writings, it is a scarce phenomenon to witness people's love for God, and always see God's formidable love for dusty-sinful humans.
I think this might be the reason why John made himself known in this way: 'the disciple Jesus loved'
Expressing a humble (or rather meek) author in an intimate relationship with Jesus. And I think Peter's nearby presence emphasis that as well (as you pointed out).
Oh how wonderful the depths of Scripture!* It is so deep that the Behemoth will drown in it, yet so shallow that a child can understand.
How indescribable is the revelation of God! How breathtaking is works!! And how humbling His sanctification.

Definitely John ... and the reason why I say this is because he was the last to die ... not only did he see the book of Revelations but he wrote it while being jailed on an island in his older years.. however died peacefully with people he loved around him

It’s not known if John the disciple and John who wrote the revelation are the same person. There are other reasonable candidates for the revelation. But John the disciple does seem highly likely to have wrote the fourth gospel.

John a Devouted man, like Job.
Both were seen the beginning and end,
John among the 12 disciples lived and died at the old age, he cannot be killed by the hands of man and was exiled.
John was commanded by Jesus to write the revelations through visions.
    Both loved by God.
Job had seen Leviathan and Behemoth, the symbols for Pride and Power,
    the marked of the Beast.
John had seen the victory of the lord at the end of times.
Message: A devouted man are truly blessed.
There's is a reward for believing and following the teachings of our LORD our God.

Using the third person voice for the reporting of events is a sort of rule/preference that goes back to ancient times. The narrative portions of the Torah that feature Moses are always in third person, so it is present in biblical Hebrew. Julius Caesar referred to himself in third person in Bellum Gallicum, and he was educated in the Greek kingdom of Pontus so it was probably standard in Greek if not also in Latin. Even in public junior high and onwards they taught us to use third person (avoid 'I', 'we') when writing reports.
Interestingly, apart from the Gospels the epistles are written in first person where applicable and so is Revelation. It would be really awkward to write a letter in third person, so this makes sense. However, Revelation is different. OT prophets seem to have a mixture of forms but significant parts of Isaiah and Jeremiah are in the first person voice as well, so John's alternating of first/third person writing in Revelation is fitting. First person seems to especially associate with reporting prophetic visions as in Isaiah 6 and Revelation 4.

It is the condition of the heart , there is unseen depth here the key is clinging Thank you Lord God Almighty for opening my eyes
    John 19:26-27
26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!”
27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.
Yes indeed what do these things mean , very simply put clinging to the King always by His side , Ruth Clung to Naomi , Adam clung to Eve (for this reason a man shall cling to his wife and they shall become one flesh ) - eat and drink Mr Piper the meat of the WORD taste and see it is good
Gen. 2. [24] Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
    Ruth 1:11-15
    New King James Version
11 But Naomi said, “Turn back, my daughters; why will you go with me? Are there still sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?
12 Turn back, my daughters, go-for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say I have hope, if I should have a husband tonight and should also bear sons, 13 would you wait for them till they were grown? Would you restrain yourselves from having husbands? No, my daughters; for it grieves me very much for your sakes that the hand of the Lord has gone out against me!”
14 Then they lifted up their voices and wept again; and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her.
15 And she said, “Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law.”
Yes Jesus loved all the disciples but , He loved this one more because of His heart for the Lord
Much love in our Lord Jesus Christ xxx Lance
Lord what about this one Peter say's - if I want Him to live till I come back ... what is it to you ........ Jesus has His very special ones ... oh the wisdom of my daddy God .... so beautiful

A clear explanation but the question of why John was loved ‘the most’ isn’t really addressed? I agree it doesn’t denigrate the other apostles to say John was loved and his identity was solely in Christ, but why is he specifically described in terms that make him seem like he was indeed set slightly above the others? Also the narrative about John possibly having a longer than normal life seems to be relevant here.

Well wasn't he the only one who did not abandon Christ when he was crucified? All the others fled and even Simon Peter denied him thrice. John is the only one who dies of natural causes and is the last man standing of the original Apostles and of course he is the Revelator to whom the end of human history is revealed. Something special about him for sure

I like all those suggestion but i dont think we can say jesus cant love a disciple more than an other... We all have that closer friend we are more comfortable with and we all have that person whom we gravitate to more than others. Jesus loved each of them deeply.. With the love of the father.. Even a parent has a favorite child even though he/she loves them all deeply and sacrificially. Jesus' love is perfect even if he were to love a disciple more than the others. It wouldnt be in a evil & callous way. Remember, "it was jacob i loved and it was esau i hated" God does not have hate in his heart or he would sin... But the verse says that because compared to his promise and devotion with Jacob, that through his line the messiah would be born it would be as if he hated esau.. And what about kane and able? Did not God favor ones brother sacrifices more than the other which caused the brother to become jealous? Jesus can have a favorite if he wants.. We dont need to get a theological about it.

So Jesus was reclining, next to the disciple Jesus Loved. Simon Peter asked this disciple, to ask Jesus.
This disciple leans back on Jesus and asks.
Jesus had previously told Simon Peter, "Get behind me satan."
Satan then would have been riding behind Jesus this entire time.
Then Judas is given the bread from Jesus. Then Satan enters Judas.
"So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29"
This means the narrator knew, Satan knew and Jesus knew. The narrator could not be any of the apostles. Satan is the only one in this narration who was not at the meal. Satan was behind Jesus opposite of the food. Satan is the only one who Jesus had commanded to be behind him.
Jesus had said to love your enemy.
The enemy of Jesus was satan.
Jesus had commanded Satan to get behind him.
This made Satan Jesus's disciple (follower), who was Jesus's enemy, and Jesus loved his enemy.
Satan it appears to be the disciple that Jesus loved.

    1. The disciples had argued amongst each other who was the greatest.
    2. James and JOHN were quick to ask to sit on Jesus side in the kingdom, resulting in the other disciples being angry with them.
    3. John and Peter seemed to have a little bit of a rivalry for Peter to ask Jesus “what about him” (John) when Jesus was telling Peter how he will die. Also John feels the need to point out that he was faster than Peter at getting to Jesus tomb.
Another thing is James and John were called the sons of thunder, perhaps that has to do with their personality.
I think maybe John may have just been bragging a little bit when he says he’s the disciple Jesus loved, it seems to be consistent with other examples of johns character.
I don’t think there’s anything deep or meaningful about it, I think John is just being a human, like a bratty child, I think he was also the youngest. He also felt he had the right to tell others to not cast out demons in Jesus name, like he doesn’t want to share Jesus as a friend or something. I imagine John probably shoved his way through the other disciples to ensure he would be the one sitting by Jesus at the table. John also left the other disciples to handle the responsibility of bringing in the fish on their own when they saw Jesus at the shore, this may be an example of a young and not fully mature person. Remember the disciples didn’t have it all together, they were imperfect like Christians today.

The bosom is the breast and chest area of the body!! Those guys were very intimate. This is a bad explanation of who and what the beloved disciple was to Jesus!
