- The Protestant clergy turned their backs on the Starving Irish Catholics, but Dr. Traill opened a soup kitchen for them and SirRobert Peel appealed to Parliament to save the Irish. The Irish Potato Famine was the greatest disaster in 19th Century European History. Of 4 Million Irish Before the Famine, 1 Million died of starvation, 2 Million emigrated to America, and 1 Million remained in Ireland. Today, there are 4 Million Irish in Ireland, but 40 Million in America.
