Augustin, what do you think of Auer's changes to the Tchaikovsky concerto? It seems that making any cuts it is out of question today, but I'm wondering specifically about the non-cut changes he made to it. Personally I don't mind them, and I think they suit the instrument very well. Of course it's not what Tchaikovsky originally wrote, but I think the modern obsession with "musical authenticity" is really getting out of hand. With it comes a certain uniformity of interpretation, which is a problem that is becoming increasingly more prevalent in today's classical music scene. The Tchaikovsky is a great concerto, but it is played so often (I think, too often) and most violinists today tend to play it in a similar manner, so I'd love to be surprised by someone playing another version (maybe even another cadenza?? Ysaÿe wrote one for the Tchaikovsky!)
hi augustin can you do a video on how to play two voices with their own phrasing, like you did for your arrangement of por una cabeza/1st movement of sibelius?
Hi Augustine. I listen to your ask Augustine all the time. I have a question. When you play your left hand is free from the neck of the violin much of the time. Could you discuss how you do this without losing where you are on the violin. I’m particularly interested because I find it’s a cramped space when playing F natural and trying to get a free vibrato.
Yes, i try not to touch the neck with my first finger. I move my elbow forward in order to get this angle. The fingers themselves, and the thumb, are the reference point that tell me where i am. It has advantages and disadvantages, so i couldn’t say if it’s right for you.

I'd love it if you would dive into how to tackle sustained fast passages like those in mendhelson mvmt 3 and paginini caprice 5. Thank you so much!!
