Gotta tell you Lori your voice is so soothing just sitting here breathing along !!!! Great video thank you, you brought the sunshine to England. Andrew
My sewing teacher had a ham in her classroom, and it was made with the panels cut on the bias. It made for a nice full rounded shape. I like the idea of stuffing it with old t-shirts! They are easily sourced, and won't melt! Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching.
I just learned what a tailor's ham is and searched the prices then, of course I performed a search for how to make one. Your video was great! Thank you and keep up the good work.
I'm glad you found it useful. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
A bought one could never be as good as one you make yourself xxx
Thank you! This will be a fab Xmas pressie for an aunt who appreciates something made over something bought xx
That's great. I hope it worked out for you.
I’m a long time sewist, so construction isn’t an issue for me-what I **really** appreciate is the measurements you provide for the pattern. Thank you so much!
You're very welcome. Thanks for watching.
This is the best tutorial for a tailor's ham.
This is brilliant! Thank you so much, Lori, for taking the time and trouble to make this great video. And thanks also for the tip on grading - very handy to know.
You are so welcome!
Sawdust is traditional stuffing, and all the tutorials say it's hard to find. Until, one said to use HAMSTER CAGE sawdust! yay, I'm spreading the word. I like the shape of your ham better than others. :-)
That sounds like a good solution. Cage litter is usually cedar, so it will smell good, too.
I just filled my ham, it was easy to pack in hard with the cage litter. YAY thank you for this tutorial, I love my little hammie!
That's good to know!
Does the fine sawdust come out through the fabric? I’m just wondering how this could be prevented. I like the thought of using sawdust, being absorbent, smelling nice etc. But unsure how you’d go about packing tight and sewing up that final gap left for filling.
@@SewingDee could maybe do a lining
Thank you a great tutorial on making a ham, one of the best iv seen .nice to have the measurements makes it so much easier to do it correctly :))
This is such a great video, you two are hilarious and made me laugh! Great instructions, I love the Tshirt idea for stuffing!!!
Thank you for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate the kind words.
That's excellent. All the others I've seen have suggested sawdust but that would bother my nose even if enclosed.... Using the t shirts is great..especially if they're clean!! 😂 Thanks guys!!
I made one of these in my advanced clothing class back in high school. We filled ours with sawdust, packed very tightly. I am now 60 years old and still use my ham in my alterations shop!
What a great history. Sawdust isn't as easy to come by as it once was, so I offered an alternative. Thanks for the comment.
Hi Lori. I made it and I’m happy I don’t know how to send tia picture of it , I’m happy. Thank you .
That's great. I'm glad you found the video useful.
What a novel idea to stuff with t-shirts! It is not as messy as sawdust.
Thank you so much for the tutorial. I've already made mine.
Wonderful!
Thank you this is the first detailed video on how to do this. Now I can create on properly and CHEAPLY.
Yes, you can make it from scraps and save money. Thanks for commenting and watching.
I made a tailor's ham and a sleeve roll today. Thanks so much for this video.
+Melatina77 It's so much fun to make things yourself. I'm glad the video helped.
thank you so much, we don't have pressing ham in my country and I did one by my own, i love it ..
That's great! Thanks for watching.
thank you for an oh important video my dear made one today an its beautiful an yes i filled it with scraps
That's great to hear! Thanks for watching.
Waoo I was thinking to buy one but after i saw these video I will make my own ham. Thanks
That's great. You'll get lots of use out of it.
I just eyeballed it and it came out perfect.. thanks for the great video!
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching.
Excellent tutorial! Thank you!
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
You crazy kids 😂 Thanks for the tutorial. Simple and very useful. I've just started to make tote bags and backpacks so I think this 'ham' will be used a lot 👍😘
That's great! I'm glad you found it useful. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for your detailed instructions. I have a tailor's ham, but by gosh, it is hidden from me in my home! (Mia for 25 years!). I just took up sewing again after a long hiatus. I rounded up tshirts. I am cutting them in strips and then into squares...I'm going to see how that stuffs in!
Leisa -VA to be more like the ones you buy , and to make it smoother, try buying rabbit bedding.
@@TheWanderingWife Indeed! Yes my savant thought was just idiot! It was very lumpy. I filled with ground walnut shells and sawdust to include an interlining to have an additional barrier and strength.. It is wonderful. Lori's pattern is great.
Sounds like it is working out for you. Thanks for giving the pattern a try.
Excellent video thanks. Love the ending. Made me smile!
+debbie thompson Smiles are important and I'm glad it worked! Thanks for commenting.
Loved the instructions on how to make the pattern!
I'm glad you found it useful. Thanks for watching.
Delightful and easy to follow. Thanks :)
You're very welcome!
Thank you for sharing. This is very helpful.
I'm glad you liked it. Thank you.
The best fabric to use for the inner layer is a thick stretch fabric and curtain fabric for the outside. The best stuffing is wood chips, it keeps the ham firm
thank you! I love how you used Tshirts to stuff it with, I have ordered home sawdust that I was going to use, but I think your way prob makes it more dense?. thank you, love the sign off lol xx
Thanks for the nice comment.
Thank you. I'm going to make 1 right now!!
Cool. Let me know how it goes.
Thanks for the good info.
Sure. Thanks for watching.
I love messing around with my old treadle.
I am trying to improve my shirt making with the help of David Coffin's book which calls for a taylors ham.
Guess what my next project is!
Peter
Thank you so much 😊 that's so great, and I have all the measurements.
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for this!
My pleasure!
Thank you so much
You're most welcome
Thanks!
Thanks for the great directions! I want to make a scaled down version for small projects and plan on feeding the ham fabric scraps from other projects. Tho this could take some time! ;-)
Susan Handsom That sounds like a good plan. Thank you for watching.
Waoohh !so easy and simple
Good video thank you so much.
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching.
Thank you
You're welcome
Brilliant. Thank you very much.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
I love the end... you two are adorable lol :)
Thanks. Wayne is my best friend, we just happen to be married.
Super! Mine turned out perfectly
Michael E That's great! Thank you for taking the time to share your success. Thank you for watching.
Thank you so much for an excellent tutorial! Is it ok to use polyester thread to sew it.
Polyester is plastic and plastic melts. Not a good idea for this project.
Awesome tutorial. Thank you for sharing it.
My doubt - can we fill polyfill to stuff the ham? TIA
VASANTHI UMESH KUMAR no you can not, because from high heat it can melt. You can use saw dust, usually sold in the pet store for small pets
VASANTHI UMESH KUMAR use sand or bedding for hamsters
Hi is the stuffing not supposed to be sawdust?? I’m sure I read somewhere I may be wrong do you know if it makes a difference meaning sawdust vs t shirt 😂
Thanks
T : yes it is, and you can get it at pet stores, usually sold as “rabbit bedding.”
The video was awesome, thank you also, What brand is your spring loaded scissors?
Most of my scissors are Fiskars. They hold up well and they are affordable.
haha....you made me laugh at the end...
What is the name of the scissors ✂️ ur using...?, I think it will be good in triming jungle hat
Awesome, thank you!
You're welcome. Thank you for watching.
That was very useful, thanks, though near the end I suddenly realised it was looking a bit like a hedgehog toy? and should therefore maybe have some eyes/face embroidered on to make ironing more fun (if that's possible?) Thanks again :)
That's a fun idea. Why not make ironing more fun?
I thought it looked like a dolphin--while she was hand-stitiching it, and we could only see the skinnier end.
I have heard of stuffing hams with polyfill and/or straw, or hay or whatever. Wouldn't these be flammable if the iron was too hot?
Polyfil is polyester which is plastic, which will melt. Not good. Everything will burn given enough heat, but you really don't want anything that will melt. Remember that it would have to burn through the wool before it gets to the cotton t-shirts.
@@LoriGriffiths I just thought that the heat from any of these stuffings would kindle even after the iron was used on the ham. Kind of scared to use them.
Hey Lori Griffiths . Thank you for this video. You say last in your video if we have other video ideas. Sure we have :-) We would very much like to see how to make a tailor's board. Can you help with that. Kind regards Tina.
What is a tailor's board?
I was wondering if they still used such a thing....thank you.
I still use mine. Not too often, but it is good to have one.
remember your going to iron on this..either use hamster bedding or 100% cotton shirts..don't use anything that will melt
That is great i like much
NGA TRAN Thank you for watching.
Why did I think they can only be filled with sawdust?
They can be filled with anything that won't melt or burn at iron temperatures. Thanks for watching.
Does it have to be white t shirts only
Nope, it can be anything that won't melt or transfer color with steam. Thanks for watching.
Can fiberfill be used to fill the ham?
Thank you for responding. I wondered if it would melt; the fiberfill I have is polyester. I am sure we have some old t-shirts I can use. I'm making my ham now. :)
Hi lori,,, is seam roll and tailor's ham are the same?
Upendo Zacharia No, they aren't the same thing. They are different shapes. A seam roll is more of a cylinder shape. They are constructed exactly the same way, though. You could easily use the same techniques to make a seam roll, you just need to sketch out a pattern. Each side is 12.5" (33.125 cm) long by 4.5" (11.925 cm) wide finished. Add a seam allowances to those measurements and simply draw a rectangle. Stuff it very firmly, like the ham.
Thanks lori for your help,,, I will do a pattern ,,, and I will let you know if I will find diffuculties or finished,,,
A tailor's ham only costs about $17, which is about the price of one T-shirt, and so I don't see how one would save money this way. There are better reasons to make one's own ham than to try to save money, I think.
I don't think anyone is stupid enough to buy new t-shirts to make a ham. Some of us with people in the household who wear t-shirts under dress shirts have lots of old ones.
Classic ending 😂
Thanks for watching.
Lol ending tho
Thanks. That was a long time ago, but we still have lots of fun together.
I found a ham for $6.64 at Walmart. much easier than making one.
+justthinking Some people, like myself, prefer to make things rather than buy them. This is true even if it isn't cost effective because there is a real joy in doing things for yourself. I'm glad you found an affordable solution and I'm sure there are others that will take advantage of your find at Walmart.
+Lori Griffiths just about everything at Walmart is bought from China and slave labor. I always feel guilty paying so little for someone's labor. I love making things myself instead of giving my money to Walmart. Things from Walmart aren't made very well and one never knows what fabrics and stuffing are in their merchandise either.
+Melatina77 I have been to Walmart all of two times in my entire life. I'm not a fan of their policies, nor what they've put in motion for the retail industry. Thanks to them and many others, finding merchandise made in the US is becoming more and more rare. I have an associate in Italy that says the same thing is happening there. Italian quality fabrics are going the way of the dodo. It's very sad and discouraging.
Lori Griffiths That is so true!
