    The funny thing is, that they later on talked in Crab Game about it and 5up said that they had this conversation about vowels irl, when he was in the UK, but Ellum forgot it.

    For anyone wondering why Y isn’t just always considered a vowel-it has to do with something called articulation and phonetics. All the vowel pronunciations of A E I O U can be done without using your tongue, lips, teeth, hard palate, soft palate (velum), or alveolar ridge (the bony ridge behind your teeth). Consonant sounds are formed using each of those things. Vowels are formed by the shape of your mouth/oral cavity. Y, on the other hand, would be considered a consonant, because it’s a palatal sound (/j/-our tongue just barely meets the roof of our mouth to form the sound). However, in some words, like the word “why”, it’s not making its typical Y sound (/j/ as in *Y*ellow). It’s creating a vowel sound (/ai/). Y is only sometimes a vowel, because it can be articulated as a consonant or as a vowel. Tbh it’s actually considered a vowel in most words that have a Y and another vowel, as long as it’s not the first letter. English is weird -your friendly neighborhood SLP :)

      I remember being mindblown when I heard this. In my native language y is always a vowel and in my 3rd language it never is

      What’s it mean if my tongue doesn’t touch for either way of saying it lmao 😂

    • @clarkecalderon3331
      @clarkecalderon3331 2 роки тому +2

      @@briarchoi31 your tongue doesn’t necessarily ‘touch’ your hard palate when making the consonant Y sound. For me, the sides of my tongue touch my upper teeth, and it’s the shape between the tongue and the hard palate that make the noise. If your tongue fully touched your hard palate, you’d be making a nasal sound. For the vowel Y sound, your tongue doesn’t interact with anything, it just changes shape within your mouth to make the sound :) hope this helps!
