Rare actually introduced an update to the ship physics as of the start of this season (y'know, two real seasons ago), which checks for ships being upside down and forces them back upright. Honestly rather disappointing for the potential of using ships while capsized, which was sort of possible, but helpful when you're actually playing the game. It's no longer a risk other than disorientation and the slight possibility of hitting something on the way down.

My duo and i alliances up with a galley for a fotd 4x stack, and a brig attacked, somehow sunk us and the gally 2 times in a row each, only sinking once ever during the 3 hours we were battling, they were able to take down our mast with only cannonballs each time, didn’t miss a mast or one ball shot at ALL, and the border took 2 ads blunderbus shots and a sniper shot without eating at all
