About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
By the way I have a great suggestion for name change! Cleann Fricker...
Ola Englund B.
I don't get it!!!
The guy with the most perfect leads: Clean Licker
Or Glenn Fucker
Awesome video! But I got a friendly tip for you, you don't start with the clean channel... you avoid it, at all cost... EDIT ok I have to bite my own tongue here, it was deliberate. Still awesome video!
Yeah, clean isn't what this is about :) but man does it do great metal tones!
What the fuck is a clean tone?!! hehe
It's kind of messed up that Glenn did not want to try it out until he saw your video. Honestly what kind of s*** is that? Thanks for being a leader not a follower, Ola!
what kind of pokemon is this clean tone you talkin´ about?
But it's right to try out the clean tone, it is good to know even if its a bad tone, and need to get addressed also, even if its bad. Clean tone is shit, but the metal tone is good. The clean tone in the new sim on the block STL Tonality Howard Benson seems very impressive. I agree clean fortin is not the best tone to start out with, at list if you gonna sell the product. You have to start with the sunshine story first. Show the desert, then its more easy digest the dry bred after.
Thanks for checking it out Glenn! Glad you enjoyed it!
Great sounding plugin!
When's the release date? Any ETA???
FortinAmps totally amazing!!
Amazing Glenn!! Ok, me next!! Got to try this!!
That amp sim is getting so much recognition it's crazy
It's pretty impressive!
Finally the perfect amp sim for smooth jazz tones
That's what the world needs!
My boi meme and glenn in the same convo
God bless
And it costs less than a spider!
Exactly. So many better options than that amp out there
3:48 Holy satan himself, that mix makes 'the eagle has landed' sound like smooth jazz. I have to try the '2 scooped and 2 mid boosted' approach because that sounded heavier than my ex-girlfriend
Have u ever had your hair stuck in a guitar bridge
yes... it sucks
Daily
Imagine a beard hair getting plucked by your guitar.
I got one even better. One time i had a beard and was tuning a low E with an old shitty Yamaha. Sum bitch broke, flew up and stuck in my cheek. Moral of the story..... I had a beard once.
Wow! That sounds ferocious!
Thanks for having me demo this! It was so awesome. Can’t wait get my hands on this!
Holy crap i was just looking up your amp sim videos yesterday awesome timing!
Hey Glen you going to demo the Fortin NTS suite? Currently my fav amp sim atm. \m/
I noticed the mic position and distance knobs on either side; did you try those out? Are they working or unsupported? Or did you think that topic would just start confusing the bass players?
Well, I guess I’ll be buying this today! Thanks for the demo Glen
The sharpness is probably because the amp model is optimized for detuned and extended range guitars. You can still fatten it up with a mid boost(Tubescreamer, etc) and it'll sound great with a 6 in standard.
jesus christ, that full mix was super heavy
Wow that is extremely tight.
I can't get enough of amp sims. I want them alllllll
Twisting life! Did they take up your offer in the end? *hype* Is the remastered Rock Me Amadeus cover actually coming?
The retracked version is coming up
*Mr Burns moment savoring gesture*
Holy Shitsnacks... That's mighty fuckin tasty!! Smoothest hi frequency and high-gain tone I'VE ever heard, amp sim or otherwise
Old video I know....... please someone help.. what’s the best way going about using plugins for rehearsal or even live? I want to use a cabinet but heard debates over pa and powered cabs. Thanks
My favourite plugin by far, absolutely gorgeous 😵. I am using the NTS at the minute as well, also very good
Question for you Glenn, I was watching a studio tour that you did awhile back and noticed you had a Sunn Beta Lead. That amp seems to be getting more and more popular. I was wondering if you had considered doing a review of it? I'd be really interested to see what your take on it is. Thanks!
🤘🏼 Keep up the Good Work Glen!
Hey would it be possible for you to do a fearless gear review on the digitech RP360? I personally use it for a few of its built in effects, like delay, occasional flanges, and chorus, but I avoid the built in amp/cab/distortion presets like the plague. While I find some of your delivery a bit over the top, I've come to respect your opinion, and your tutorials and suggestions have helped me progress as both a musician, and a fledgling producer, and I was curious about your opinion on this relatively cheap piece of gear.
And if you promise not to destroy it if you hate it, I can send you mine to review haha
Friend the cheap gear is not the problem believe me
Over time you will realize that a tone of quality you can achieve if you have the necessary knowledge in the mix and you understand which tools to use and which ones do not, and thus get the most out of each amp sim.
I could help you,
What high gain sound do you like?
If you are interested, tell me
Hi Glenn. What pickups do you have in your Ibanez RG 7..(321?) ?
Seymour Duncan
Glenn, what versions of Reaper and the nameless suite are you using? I'm having issues with the GUI not showing up when I load the plugin onto a track. Just curious what is working for you so I can try and roll back to an earlier version.
P.S. A few other users on facebook mentioned having the same issue and I recall Neural DSP commenting that they were working on solving the problem.
Which amp sim would you (anyone in the comments) recommend for clean tones? This sounds like it's the best for high gain.
the best thing about it is that achieving massive tones is easy !
The perfect amp sim if you wanna cover anything really! This thing is versatile as fuck!
Big time Fortin fan here and I like what I heard! Glenn have you tried the Grind pedal? I think that you might like it!
Hi Glenn. What do you think of "The Dominador" by Audio Assault?
It's a very similar amp sim
Yeah! Can't wait for thursday!
Where did you hear it was releasing Thursday?? I cant find anything on a release day?? Thanks.🤘
they announced it on Instagram. Thursday 1pm CET (but this might for pre-orders only)
@@KaoswareMetal awesome, thank you, I'm not on Instagram. 🤘👍
FORTIN NAMLESS SUITE VS MERCURIAL REAXIS???
Legitimately curious, what's your favorite amp for clean tones? Cheers from Pittsburgh, PA!
Holy shit! This sounds amazing!
This plugin sounds amazing and has a similar clarity to my modded Bugera 6262 amp. A bit exhausting on the very highs though, gotta tame that a bit, and agree with Glenn - you must turn up the gain a bit to thicken things up, and leave the grind pedal away, then you can get FUCKING AMAZING Thrash tones with this. I personally don't like too much the tones Glenn got out here when playing guitar only, but that is just plain subjective - he will know what he's doin', and perhaps the sounds are always tailored to fit a mix, where they sound really good I have to admit!
Thanks for this great review!
Best value recto sim out there.
So thicc, Thanos would have to snap twice!
Settle down. It's an amp sim, not your mom
Pretty nice indeed
Whatever happened to TJ? Haven't seen him in any of your videos in a long time.
cast390
He got a job, and is focusing primarily on that, for now.
TJ was abducted by aliens while on a Bigfoot hunting expedition...
Frickom del monte love it
That prestige 👌🏻
Glen, I made a purchase recently of a tube amp I thought sounded really good...at the guitar store. Got it home and have been playing around with it, and I think I'm getting buyer's remorse. Is it possible to get a good, heavy sound out of a Mesa Stiletto Deuce? If not, I think I want to take an axe to this thing.
Which kind of high gain tones do you want?
I can give you a high gain tone of very good quality without having to buy an ax fx if you are interested and I can show you that you can sound incredible without spending thousands of dollars.
Hey Glenn killer review, could you do a video on some gear from PRS, like amps or guitars
this sounds kind of thin and fizzy. meh, not a fan at all.
I'm not looking to buy it, but it does sound great in other demos, like Ola's, Systematic Productions, and that guy from Northlane. Glenn just did a shit job dialing it in and only used his impulses, even though a considerable factor in this plugin is it's own speaker and mic emulation. I like Glenn's videos for many reasons, but I always think his product reviews sound the weakest compared to others.
you should try toneforge Ben Bruce... that thing is foolproof....
Compared to my axe fx it does sound pretty tasty for the money.

The dude looks like the Amadeus cover guitar guy :)
He is
Awesome video and an awesome plugin! Much better than the one designed by a company that bullies reviewers by filing copyright claims for poor reviews...
What a refreshing sound!
SUPER bright right?? but im a big time treble head so
I just dont see how you can go wrong with this and Nadir with the free IRS fro. Catharsis etc...
Great Video!
PSA Here: To 'de-fizz' most amp sims you need to realize that *most* IRs are taken using Hi-Fi type amps (tube or not, they're usually 20-20k), and not the power-amp section of an actual guitar head/amp, and you need to EQ accordingly..
Check out the user manual of any OwnHammer IRs, and you will find this info..

I hate bothering people. I'm not sure if this is the best place for random questions. I'm a solo, at-home guitarist recording metal riffs into my PC. I have SHIT drum sounds and I need that raw, authentic drum sound. I know that virtual drums are frowned upon...? But unfortunately, with my budget, and not being a drummer, buying drums is completely out of the question. What is reasonable solution for metal/rock drums? I know EZDrummer seems to be popular. Is that the "standard go-to"? What do at-home, solo guitarists like me do for drums?
Also, total newbie question. When recording two guitars for left and right ( that's overdubbing right?) Do you record both in stereo? (into my usb interface, I"m not mic'ing anything)
Found your channel recently. Love your videos, I'm totally getting sucked into everything. Thanks!
Virtual drums are fine as long as you aren't just making all the notes as loud as possible as everything sounds very robotic and obviously MIDI. A little research into drum mapping will go a long way and I'd advise you to check out Misha Mansoor's UA-cam videos on it.
As far as recording guitars goes then unless your guitar rig is stereo (which is pretty rare really) then you just record both in mono and then pan the hard left and right, although there are many different views on this.
S'alright.
I think Samus Paulicelli (66samus on YT) uses EZDrummer with his triggers on his own drums. I don't know which specific samples he uses though.
I personally think that the sounds from EZDrummer (especially the stock ones) sound really weak. Additionally, I don't like the fact that the drums are pre-mixed in such a way that restricts your future mixing and sound tweaking choices.
I'd personally suggest Superior Drummer. Yes, it is more expensive (EZD starts at about 100 USD while entry price for SD3 is about double), but in my opinion it more than deserves the name "Superior". The sounds are raw recordings, meaning you can process and mix them any way you like. There are, of course, presets, but the downside is that you actually have to know how to do so.
Each of the two has expansions available (EZX and SDX respectively), but Superior Drummer can also load EZX sounds while EZDrummer cannot do the opposite.
Essentially, get EZD for quick and easy. Get SD3 for flexibility and control.
When you record a pair of guitars, you generally record/export the DI in mono. After all, it's only one signal. I generally route both DIs to a bus with the amp sim on it. Less CPU usage, even tone. The technique itself is called *double tracking* , which is pretty self explanatory.
What you _can_ do, if you decide to export the raw tracks, is export the output of the bus with the plugins off so you get a stereo DI. I don't think anybody would have a problem with that.
Informative. Thank you. It makes sense to me. - Yea, unfortunately, I've always struggled with good drum sounds. I always use to try to find a good sample library to purchase. I'll have a look at EZD more in depth, and certainly SD3 as well. It just seems odd that there's so many amp sims, virtual instruments etc on the market but hard rock sounds seem rare..? Maybe I'm not looking hard enough.
Yea, I always try to humanize my drum patterns. It definitely removes the robotic sound of it. Thank you.
Hi Glennypoo. I wanted to get this but didn’t know its name.
Yep ..... She said you had a quick one too .
Do a review on the improved Bias 2?
Are the high gain tones improved?
Based on the demos I'd seen previously I was dying to get this, especially because of the killer higher end, but it's honestly WAY too expensive for what's basically a single use VST that only ever really sounds outstanding in a full mix (and at a similar price to an entire Bias suite). When you consider every bedroom musician will probably end up using this and everyone will sounding the same as a result I really wonder if you're just better off buying a decent mic/loadbox and hooking up your actual gear.
Scruffy Bones don’t have to worry about sounding the same if you have a shred of creativity bro beans.
Between an axe fx and a 100$ plugin that’s gonna get me all I really need I think it’s perfect
Not everyone will sound the same if you use different IRs for the cab
Oh sweet spawn of Satan! Sounds heavier than the sun.
By the way, what do you think of Neural DSP's Darkglass plugins?
idk if the intro being all weird was intentional or not hahaha
Too much bass on the guitar tone demo, sounds good tho
Bass was almost maxed out. Cleans needed more bass for sure.
Listening through MacBook speakers, all tones sounded pretty shit, thin and piercing. So not good translating guitar tone. I know "listening through MacBook speakers blah blah blah". But it gotta translate. Not any "good" recordings with distorted guitars sounds so bad through these bad MacBook speakers. As you stated too much bass, thats probably the problem its masking so much when listening in full range speakers!
To me the rythm tone sounds very scooped and muddy. Maybe I'm too used to hearing tons of mids in a metal guitar tone though.
Clean tone? Never heard of her.
HOLY SHIT!!
Clean and slightly overdriven sounds were super clinical sounding. Didn't like them. The high gain tone sounded awesome though, especially in the mix.
Glenn please do a fearless gear review of Hughes & Kettner’s Black Spirit 200
that mix sounds THICC
that mix is thicker than a bowl of oatmeal
i was actually watching while eating oatmeal
You playing style is like Stef Carpenter from Deftones. Simple riffs, great songs !
The sound sucks!!!!
Sent from randomsmartphone
i have 2 nice monitors in my ears and honestly it does kinda suck. its got no punch behind the chugs. ripping solos and lead riffage is tolerable but the punch lacks serious luster.
Meh, i was sarcastic too, but ive heard better from less expensive vst myself. Honestly i didnt found anything that made me go "wow, i might need to purchase this".
I think a big part of that is Glenn's choice of cab impulses, they're very scooped and, honestly, a little shrill (which is his aesthetic, Glenn's never going to pull out a super thick, modern sounding recording -- it's just not his style). There are other demos by Ola and Ermin that put this thing in more of those contexts and it sounds pretty great to my ears!
Yeah, it's sad the impulses Glenn choose didn't have enought medium to really shox the punch of the amp....
>not using beyerdynamic dt990s
WOW! I don't know exactly what's going on here, but since the first days of amp sim vsts (and really functionally all the way to the preamp section/distortion pedal modelling, etc,) I always had a problem that I would share with the coders, where I'd show a spectral sweep between an actual head or preamp and their version, invariably missing TONS of the high end. I think we've gotten used to that wet blanket sound over the years (plus ditching the highs is an easy, noob way to get rid of the "fizz" inherent in these types of tones), but when I hear this one, it sounds right as far as I can tell. Or maybe its just your impulses, I guess I should get those now
Agreed, the Brainworx amps are a good example of exactly this!
Glen,
I absolutely freaking LOVE your fearless gear reviews! They really have opened my mind to sonic intelligence. Plug ins, amps and effects processors that I absolutely thought sounded great don't stand a chance against your ruthlessness in the studio. Can truly realize difference now.
On a different note, I'd love to see you do some more reviews on basses, effects and bass amps (if you happen to find any worth reviewing, lol). I have been playing bass on and off for about 18 years (I was focusing on guitar and vocals during those times) and have really taken a liking to your channel and what you have to say. I have been really focusing on mastering the bass the last 3 years or so and I realize now, more than ever, that I still have so much to learn. But that's how we learn and grow as people and musicians isn't it? Love your stuff, keep it up!
-Zack
Your neighbor In NC
I thought the high gain stuff sounded really fizzy wasn't a huge fan of those tones but to each their own
Didnt really dig the tone but it could be the cab emulation, it sounds overhyped like the old modellers cabs did, trying to hard to be a filter and overdoing it with weird nasal mids.
Also the price is absolutely ridiculous for what you get...should cost more like $45 USD. AND it requires that stupid fkn iLok nonsense. It doesn’t require the usb stick thing which is okay, but it does require an ilok account and you have to install the damned license manager. I already had that from ProTools requiring it but if I didn’t there’s no way I’d want that going anywhere near my computer. Don’t understand why devs continue to use that garbage. Their software STILL gets cracked and ends up on torrent sites, the only thing it ends up doing is making it harder for legitimate users.
Can you say what specific IRs you were using? The mix sounded great. Like really really great. It didn’t sound like there was too much highs like it did when the other guy was playing by himself.
I much prefer the sound of the Emissary, makes me question the purpose of buying amp sims when a freebie sounds better
To my ears at least.
i think is too thin alone and you used the 7 string cause probably sounds better with it than the 6 strings, am i right or not? i think im gonna stay with my torpedo captor nice vid! Greetings From Puerto Rico!
Finally got around to trying this...I think it sounds horrible. The high end and quack is unbearable.
Any opinions as to what is the best clean channel from a multi-channel amp?
I've owned the Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier for a few years now, and I really like the clean tones from that amp. I think Mesa amps sound super big and very polished when they are used as clean. But I've also heard some other amazing amps when it comes to clean, like some ENGLs, Marshall etc. (although being kind of a different sounding amp).
I liked the clean of this plugin I must say. Although I find it also to be a bit thin/trebly, especially compared to amps like Mesa or Marshall's JVM series etc... However, the gain in this Fortin plugin sounds really cool. Super crunchy, and there's not a certain frequency that takes over. I find that for instance with the Triple-recto, certain frequencies tend to take over the mix a lot.
Just starting to test these Impulse Response etc, my question is I use Cubase as my DAW but when I go to lay down a track I get a mixed signal of the overdriven IR Amp+ Cab plus the DI sound of my guitar were really I only want to hear the overdriven IR Amp+Cab I can't figure out how to bypass the DI sound so I only hear what's going through the IR Amp+Cab ... Any advice would be much appreciated...
question about acoustics for glenn FUCKER !Recording drums in a small room, 11x11 with 12 foot ceiling that slants down to 8 feet on the other side. heavily treat(cover) 3 of the walls in acoustic foam, bass traps in all the corners and place the drum set on the side with the taller ceiling in the corner between two heavily treated walls. could i still get a lively drum sound? i know it isn’t ideal but it’s what i have to work with now.
Those clean and slightly overdriven tones sounded like absolute ass.
They're waiting on the results of the paternity test before they give it a name...
Great amp sim, but you can still get a killer tone from free amp plugins and a killer cab impulse.
For the life of me can’t find the right balance of sustain and buzzing with this plug in. Either good sustain and lots of buzzing, or poor sustain and no buzzing. I’ve toyed with the gains, boost pedal, noise gate, etc. Anyone’s thoughts?!
I know you like your drum tracks played with backwards sticks, you should look into a bundle of Promark's Rock Knockers. More power with less wrist strain. No taper, no tip. Two butt ends like a bass player.
Was wondering why the video sounded shit until I realised I had an eq on my speakers so I could figure out the bass to a song I was learning(PS I'm a guitarist not a bassist, please don't slaughter me) but when I took that eq filter off...fuck me.
Clean is to piercing. Same with slightly driven. Balls Walls, metal rhythm sounds like the worst metal zone setting I've ever heard. Lead sound is nice. Where did you find that girl on the drums. She's hideous.
Fuck dude, you should try the solid state Fortin designed stuff for shits ‘n’ giggles. Randall RG13 and RGOD, the EQ is insane on both of them
Digital amp modelling is getting better and better. I have a Fractal AX8 and couldn't be happier with the tones I get. Plugins are also getting better, the Mercuriall stuff for example is really, really good.
Hey Glen, I know you are are against drum replacement what about 80s tricks like adding a low sin wave to a kick drum attack and adding a white noise sample to make a snare pop?
I might be in the minority here, but I actually liked the clean tone on this. As for the mix, to me it sounded a bit lost, especially earlier on. I heard everything, but it seemed like it lacked some high end clarity.
Too much bass in the distortion for the guitar. That's what the bass guitar is for. Kemper is still better
Love the remains of the code on the wall, but it dosen’t deserve to be next to the spider. I still think it’s a pretty good amp.
What's the background song that plays in the whole video? Please suggest.
Clean is good, low gain is quite poor though, sound fake as hell to me, but the hi gain sounds are awesome...defo best hi gain sim I have heard
Every youtubers and their mothers are demoing this plugin lately. Honestly, that was one of the worst demo of it I've seen.
That clean tone was horrible, but i blame that on Glenn ಠ_ಠ
Just grab a mic bro.. the V.O. is horrible. Your videos are fuckin awesome, just no VO.
