1969 World Series Game 3 NEW YORK 10/14/69 NBC

- Recent complete remaster/restoration of the Original NBC Broadcast raw network footage (no breaks to commercials etc.) Recorded and Digitalized off a few sources I've collected and recorded over the last 30-25 years two versions from pre recorded DVD discs and a VHS pre recorded tape for the most complete and best quality I have in the archives with some recent frame rate and color corrections to the classic series, and a new audio track of the NBC Broadcast with Curt Gowdy and Lindsay Nelson from Shea Stadium. Includes the pre game show WORLD SERIES REPORT with Mikey Mantle and Sandy Koufax and Jim Simpson.
With the Series ties at a game a piece Earl Weaver starts left hander Jim Palmer for Baltimore and Gil Hodges send rookie pitcher Gary Gentry for New York. the Mets jump on Palmer early with a lead off HR from Tommie Agee as Palmer has control issues throughout the game.
Game famous for Tommie Agee's catches a run saving catch off the bat of Elrod Hendricks to end the 4th inning and a diving grab in right center off Paul Blair to end any Oriole threat in the top of the 7th.
Gary Gentry with the win (1-0) goes 6.2 innings giving up 0 runs on only 3 hits as Nolan Ryan comes in to end the threat in the 7th and keeps the Orioles scoreless and earns the save (1). Jim Palmer with the loss (0-1) goes 6 innings giving up 4 runs on five Mets hits. Ed Kranepool hits his first HR of the 1969 Series in the 8th off reliever Dave Leonhard to seal it for the Mets as they take the 2-1 lead in the series

Rest In Peace...Bud Harrelson, Jerry Grote, Jim McAndrew, Donn Clendenon, Tommie Agee. and Singer Steve Lawrence.
Love how Agee just put his head down and ran briskly around the bases . No need to show up the pitcher or other players . The players had more class back then .
Watching the pre-game with Tony Kubek interviewing the fans--lovely days in NYC. What a contrast to the present.
Not to mention the studio show was not some kind of circus. You just had a consummate pro in Simpson, talking baseball with two most famous players of their era.
When Agee led off with the HR and saved crucial runs with those 2 great catches, the Orioles were doomed - especially with Seaver pitching game 4 and Koosman game 5
Gotta love Jane Jarvis on the organ. I wish MLB would go back to that type of entertainment.
Too-how shall I put it for the overly emotional and SENSITIVE crowd-SYSTEMIC…
Thanks for naming her. Good call.
John Kiley, Fenway Park.
Same here. I grew up in the NY area used to enjoy hearing the great Eddie Layton play the organ at Yankee Stadium.
The Mets do still have a live organ player but I think just on Sundays or special promotional days
The AGEE game! I was in 6th grade and ran home from school to catch the end of this game. Thanks for posting!
Same with me! A 6th grader at PS 253 in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn and I came home in time for Ed Kranepool’s homer! During school though, a teacher from another class came into our classroom and told us the Mets were up 3-0, the entire classroom erupted in cheers! I was much more relaxed after that but anxious since I couldn’t wait for school to let out and when it was 5-0 Mets, I had so much confidence they would win it all and they did!!
Agee was my favorite too but how about Gentry’s two run double??? Holy mackerel! He drove in one run all year and this! I swear the Mets were possessed that year! Shame that Gary got injured and never had the career he should have had, but he will be part of 1969 Mets lore forever! Agee barely got to those balls but what speed and timing!! 56,000 jaws were dropped on a number of occasions that day!
I was in seventh grade. We were not allowed to bring radios to school, but I knew of a few people who smuggled them in.
Let's not forget Ed Kranepool homer for the final Mets run.
I was in 6th grade also. We were fortunate enough to have the school stop teaching, and let us watch the games. I really think that the teachers wanted to watch the game more than the kids 😅
I love watching Jim Palmer pitch , he’s exactly what the Orioles need now , a true Ace
0:14 Bill Wendell: "The following NBC sports program is brought to you in living color."
13 years old cut school with my older brothers took the subway from Brooklyn to games 3,4 and 5! Amazing!
The pregame show had a Laugh-In inspired set.
Half expected Goldie Hawn or Arte Johnson to pop out of the joke wall
Not only a classic game, but with commercial breaks included! Thank you for posting!
Dr Jimmy (and Mr Jim) it’s the raw network footage no breaks to commercial just straight out..only the MLB or Network related commercials and promos are intact (World Series Report) 👍😎
@@pheniafilmsthemlbarchiveso9229 Yep, I realized this once the actual game started. Still a real gem!
I’m transported back to my childhood again. Many thanks.
A Day game for world series, us kids were in school during this era, thank god we can see it now on you tube!
My Mom she dragged me inside when I was 4 to watch the 69 Series. Thanks for posting these videos so I know what I watched 😊
I’m transported back to my youth. Many thanks!!
The cheering was so loud for Agee’s catches it could be heard at Belmont Race Track which is eight miles away.
NY freshman in college, listening to my transistor radio while walking to class. Great memories!
What irony! The program leads off with Jim Palmer's shutout as a rookie in the 1966 Series, and of course in this game rookie Gary Gentry and Nolan Ryan shut out Palmer and the O's, with a little, okay, more than a little help from Tommie Agee.
This game marks Nolan Ryan's only appearance in the World Series. He has said that he prizes his WS ring above all of his no-hitters. Although he was not happy in New York, he loved the fans (who loved him and his fastball, "Von Ryan's Express", and returned many times to participate in Miracle Mets-related events.
One can only imagine how the Mets would have fared had they kept Seaver, Koosman, Ryan and McGraw together through the 70s.
When I watch these old, and yet classic World Series highlights, I think to myself how simple life was back in the day!!.... When I view the '69 Mets I finally came to the conclusion what made this possible....It was a young Joe Willie Namath and the New York Jets winning the Superbowl over the heavily favorite Baltimore Colts. I believe it brought back the competitive spirit of WINNING and EXPECTING to WIN. That was the ATTITUDE of New York city!! Because the last time New York had a competitive team was the '64 Yankees, the Yankees would go down in defeat in 7 games to a young St. Louis Cardinals team that was loaded with talent many of them were future hall of famers.
What the NY Jets started would somehow pass on to the Mets. The team started the '69 as they had in previous season loosing, by the ALL Star break they were 5 games behind the division leading Chicago Cubs, by September the Mets moved pass the Cubs and took over 1st place and NEVER looked back. This would pass on to the upstart NY Knicks who would produce a winning record of
60 & 22 and go onto becoming NBA champions defeating the LA Lakers in 7 games. In closing, the city of NY would become the city of CHAMPIONS from 1969 to 1970. Thank You Joe Willie Namath for what you did for Professional Sports. You brought RESPECTABILITY to the AFL, thus sending a very POWERFUL MESSAGE to the NFL: WE'RE HERE TO STAY.....And WE'RE JUST AS GOOD AND COMPETITIVE AS ANYONE!!......
I’m disappointed in myself for not appreciating Lyndsey Nelson more, guy was top notch in college and pro football as well as a great announcer for the Mets
When I found this, I smiled to myself. Memories of history class in JR High, when our history teacher wheeled in the TV and told us all to root for the Mets, or we would flunk for the quarter. No problem! I rooted for the Mets. First year there were ANY baseball playoffs.
Love the way Jerry grote greets tommie Agee at the end of the game. Very tight team.
Nobody called a game better than Curt Gowdy
Vin Scully did pretty well
Curt Gowdy was the best. The last non-corporate sportscaster.
Count the seconds between pitches and the average around 10 to 12 seconds. Consistent. No pitch clock necessary. Just baseball
Art Shamsky: great power with those strong wrists!
Gentry would make $25 million per year now
Thank you for posting
One part of the game I never noticed before was the pregame interview Tony Kubek does with the fans at 13:00.
It took a lot of backbone and conviction on his part to interview a cross-section of Americana in 1969 on national television (both genders and multi-racial).
It was a small gesture but I think it speaks volumes of the person Kubek is.
SHEA STADIUM, A TRUE MLB BALLPARK . NOT LIKE TODAY'S MINI MLB PARKS.
I was at the game when the Mets clinched in 1969 as a Yankee fan I actually was rooting for them to lose.
1:26:08 "What a grab! Tom Agee! Saved two runs!" That indeed would have plated 2 runs and possibly changed the course of game.
2:18:50 when Nolan Ryan comes in, for those interested.
Who would have guessed that this would be the only World Series appearance for Nolan Ryan...kinda reminds me of Dan Marino who only appeared in one Super Bowl.
This was real baseball! No pitch clock and no universal dh among other rules
I especially love the ghost runner! 😉
This is the mets lineup that swept the braves. In four games including this one they scored 32 runs.
Sandy and gil were teammates for many years. Mickey played in 4 world series against gil.
Nolan Ryan.....all I have to say....my goodness
Great game thank you
Curt Gowdy (PBP) & Lindsey Nelson (C) 1st half
Nelson (PBP) & Gowdy (C) 2nd half

The key to this upset is pitching. The Mets pitchers might not have been better BUT they out pitched the O's and had great plays.
It was also the defense the timely hitting and the luck which helped the Mets win the 69 WS
The Mets had great pitching..even the Orioles commented they never saw pitching like that all year...but the Mets had a year where everything fell into place....the Mets made defensive plays in this series that were insane...it was almost like they played over their heads...and I'm a Mets fan..
PAUL BLAIR, BOOG POWELL, ELROD HENDRICKS, FRANK ROBINSON, MIKE CUELLAR, ALL PLAYED WINTER BALL IN PUERTO RICO.
Tommie Agee hit several leadoff home runs that season. Get this: I once had a Nolan Ryan rookie card. Gave it along with all of my baseball cards except Tom Seaver (which I still have) to my next door neighbor when we moved in 1973. I still kick myself for that.
Jerry Koosman was on the same rookie card as Nolan Ryan.
Come for the baseball, stay for Jane Jarvis
I like the view from behind home plate. It's too bad they don't do that anymore, but I assume having a camera behind home plate would eliminate a bunch of high priced seats, which no team would allow to happen.
Do we know what Gil said to Ryan when he went out to the mound? Whatever it was, it worked! My knees buckled just watching it!
Yeah, Curt the odds were in favor of Baltimore but the Mets wasted no time shutting up the oddsmakers! 😉👍
*The Tommie Agee Game:*
Agee leads off with HR to L/CF @45:11
Tommie Agee makes run saving catch on Elrod Hendricks
@1:26:10
Agee makes diving grab on Paul Blair with bases loaded @2:20:50
THEY TALK A LOT ABOUT MIKE TROUT BUT I WONDER HOW MUCH A YOUNG SWITCHHITTING POWER HITTER LIKE MICKEY MANTLE WOULD BE WORTH TODAY.
I was in the 6th grade..the pace of this games is wonderful, real baseball.where did this go wrong?
MLB ran by biz execs who never played the game in their lives..that’s what wrong downward spiral get out while you can just say no
Exactly when the narcissistic rich boys get in any industry, then proceed to mincromanage it and destroy it.
@pheniafilmsthemlbarchiveso9229
Clutch. The Mets came through every test during this series.. They should be known as Gil Hodges' New York Mets. Their execution was near flawless.
Nolan Ryan pitching to some classic players. His lone World Series win. And Jerry Lewis shutting down the broadcaster. "Are you a Mets fan, Jerry?" / "I flew all the way from Los Angeles to be here. Does it look like I'm in Baltimore?!" / "Ok. Thank you, Jerry...Back to you in the booth!"
That curve ball on the last pitch of the game was, according to Ryan, the best curve ball he ever threw.
@@8avexpThat WAS nasty
1:25:35 Agee's great grab.
With all due respect to Sandy and the late Yankee legend, Mickey Mantle, I was happy the Mets made them look silly on their predictions for the Orioles good chances for Game 3 as well as for the series! The A-GGE group including AGEE did the job! A for Agee, G for Gentry, G for Grote and E for Eddie (as in Kranepool)! 😇😀😂👍😉
THE BEST CENTERFIELDERS IN METS' HISTORY: TOMMIE AGEE, CARLOS BELTRAN AND LANCE JOHNSON. BY THE WAY, TOMMIE AGEE PLAYED WINTER BALL IN PUERTO RICO IN THE MID 60'S.
What about Lenny Dykstra, sure he played on the Phillies too but in 86 he was an important part of that amazing Mets team that beat both the Astros & Red Sox to win the World Championship, in an important game 5 he hit a home run off Dave Smith of the Astros and made a couple of great catches in that game, also in game 3 of the World Series against Oil Can Boyd of the Red Sox he hit a home run early in that game that gave the Mets an early lead they did not relinquish
gary gentry was a awesome rookie in 69
58:35 Ed Kranepool was not popular with the Mets at the time, but Gil Hodges worked with him in 1963 as a player to improve his skills. Signman Karl Earhardt made Kranepool a target of ridicule with his "Super Stiff" signs. You just missed his "Super-Duper-Stiff" sign here.
“Good grab! That has to be the play of the series! (Referring to the fan catching Dave Johnson’s foul ball in the 2nd inning of Game 3) 😂😂 I laugh about it because they were about to see two of the four best plays that afternoon and the next day: Agee’s two sensational catches later on in Game 3 and the next day, Jones’ sliding catch and the toughest of them all that saved Game 4, Swoboda’s catch off Brooks Robinson!
Then Swoboda made another fine catch going to his left in the power alley in game 5....The Mets were truly amazing in this World Series💪👍
@@danielhuntington2116 , ohhhhh yes! Because of the Anti-war Moratorium Day, I was home to see it! When he robbed Brooks Robinson, I thought “the Mets are going to win this series!” And they did! Don’t forget Cleon Jones made a sliding catch to Rob future Mets manager Davey Johnson of a hit in Game 4! They were destined to win it all!
TOO BAD THAT THEY DON'T HAVE THE GULF CARTS ANYMORE.
please rise for the anthem..awesome
yeah todays fan could give a shit..short attention spans don’t know a thing about tradition and respect (or the game of baseball for that matter)
It’s a lost cause in our selfish/selfie society
@@pheniafilmsthemlbarchiveso9229exactly
Jane Jarvis was also a great jazz organist
Those were some real men back then to stand there in the batters box when Nolan Ryan was pitching tight inside.
Or dumb as hell..
To quote Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) "Who's Lou?!?"
2:06:58 Gov. Rockefeller calling Tony Kubek, "Tommy".
Does nayone know what song the organist is playing at 1:55:29?
Great ballgame, btw.
most likely it's Jane Jarvis. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Jarvis
Interesting how mickey mantle had league loyalty. Today there isn't even team loyalty.
Trying to find full game videos of ‘69 Mets-Braves NLCS, there is just a few snippets.⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️
the game does not exist obviously ..not every game was recorded/saved in those days only game highlight clips were saved (for local news etc).. and explains those who don’t understand the use of kinescope should do more research
Nice they kept Aaron hitting HR off centerfield flagpole in game 3 off Gentry, baseball HOF has that on a continuous loop.⚾️
Umpires (Game 3)
HP Larry Napp (AL)
1B Shag Crawford (NL)
2B Lou DiMuro (AL)
3B Lee Weyer (NL)
LF Hank Soar (AL) (Crew Chief)
RF Frank Secory (NL)
Public Address Announcer: Jack Lightcap
Organist: "The Queen of Medley at Shea Stadium," Jane Jarvis.
I met umpire Lee Weyer in 1987...he told me working the 1969 world series was a great thrill he would never forget.
Shea was a classic MCM design......
Imagine if the Mets had held on to Reggie Jackson, Paul Blair and Nolan Ryan. That's the base for a dynasty team.
Uh, Reggie Jackson was the second overall pick, taken by the Kansas City Athletics out of college in 1966. The Mets never drafted Reggie Jackson.
"What a grab! Tom Agee!" 1:26:00
OUTFIELDERS AND INFIELDERS DIDN'T HAVE ANY CARDS IN THEIR POCKETS SHOWING THEM WHERE TO PLAY.
Agee catches at 1:26:05 and 2:20:46.
Green Tiny Kubeck. Still alive.
How about Gentry's two run double!? He was a terrible hitter as well
Nolan Ryan was on the Mets as a relief pitcher. I literally find it unbelievable. One of the best pitchers in the history of baseball couldn't even get on the field at this point in his career.
2:13:12 Rube Walker
Hodges changes pitchers 2:16:40
Rube Walker visits 2:13:12
Rube Walker 2:13:18
Agee's great first catch-1:25:25
@2:37:33…Jackie Kennedy Onassis is not very impressed with Jerry Lewis…looks like she’s telling him…”shut the hell up…you’re scaring my kids”…🤣🤣🤣🤣
Just do not scare Jerry's Kids that of course draw no attention to Jerry.
It will never happen. Kids today don’t care a whit for this kind of entertainment
Why are they putting Kranepool in the game?? Ed Cesspool!!! Clendenon should be playing against right handers or lefties. Kranepool can't run, he's slow and can't hit!!!!
LOL!!!!...I agree with u but but I was happy for him ...he was an original Met who got a WS HR and a WS ring..
Hodges platooned Kranepool and Clendenon. Since Palmer(a righty) was pitching Kranepool (a lefty hitter) started at first base. Hodges’ platooning plan worked superbly for the Mets in 1969.
You guys ruined these games with all these commercials
Having commercials is how you tubers make money
A national disaster.
THERE WERE THREE TEAMS THAT CURT GOWDY SUCKED UP TO: THE ORIOLES, THE RED SOX AND THE BIG RED MACHINE.
