  • A friend asked me to make sure his Danitrio in beutifull dark green nashiji will last long and healthy. Emy from ‪@pen.venture‬ reviewed this exact pen some time ago : • Danitrio Sho-Genkai Fo... , ant recently sent it to me for inspection and some treatment.
Pen is lacquered in dark green with nashiji layers on top. In nashiji-nuri lacquer is sprinkled with gold or silver particles - nashiji. Nashiji-fun particles are irregular and flatened, and come in many sizes. On this pen a size #4 (probably) of silver nashiji-fun was used, in many layers. It looks stunning.
But - the finish was not perfect, and it started to develop tiny pits in the surface, not visible to naked eye, but that could be a threat to looks of the pen in future. Emy asked me to do something with it so here I am ;)
I applied urushi-gatame - used for restoration of urushi items which is basically a mixture of high quality raw urushi (in this case Japanese kijomi from very good maker) and turpentine.
Most pens I show are for sale, and the best way to buy them is to check out my Instagram and send me a message there. There are usually some pens stock and you can find them here : tamenuri.com/s...

I'm Michael and I'm a fountain pen addict. I lacquer pens with urushi lacquer. I make fountain pens. On my channel, you fill find tutorials, videos from my urushi workshop, presentation of techniques, tools and materials used in urushi craft. I am also showing pens lacquered by me and other artists. I review pens but mostly urushi and I focus on this aspect of a pen, not usual build, nibs and writing performance.
I am self-taught in this craft, most I know I do I learned from my own experience, trial and error. A lot of them. But also from Japanese books, and videos on urushi and other urushi artists.

Very interesting! I guess you have to be careful where you buy Urushi work with this much knowledge. Probably why you only seem to buy Nakaya?

Well, i would probably buy moch more urushi pens, but to be frank I prefere to make them ;)) nakaya is super nice quality as are Namiki and Sailor. The problem is Namiki and Sailor pens i like are way to expensive to justify a purchase for me - I’d rather invest in my studio. On the other hand - I try to examine as many urushi pens as possible (difficult it covid time) to learn. So i prefere to spend money to travel to penshows, other workshops, and see many pens, than on 2-3 pens.
