    Today we went back to the province to get some work done with our well. I purchased a solar water pump and we needed to build a roof to mount it before the pig pen is ready so they will have water. Yes Brian, you touch on the issue of the magnitude of unutilized or under-utilized agricultural land there is in the Philippines....this is partly due to the strict inheritance laws meaning that previously economically viable lots get divided by 6 or 8 or more when the owner dies...the heirs mainlu only want money and are not interested in farming, or combining with their siblings to retain a viable parcel of land.... That coupled with the Agrarian Reform act which will prevent any neighbors from acquiring the land and expanding their holdings beyond the 5ha maximum.... The result is even the land that is farmed is too small for economic use of machinery...farming ends up being hugely inefficient and almost stone-age.... The Marcos government recognizes the issue and has put in place many very good assistance programmes with the Feed the Nation policy, but the fundamental issue of inheritance and the DAR make it difficult to fix...

    • @AustralianinthePhilippines
      @AustralianinthePhilippines  2 місяці тому

      yeah it's quite ridiculous that people can only own a 5 hectare lot and you are correct that it's not viable to own farm machinery to work small lots. Nor is it possible for farmers to grow commercial quantities of produce to make a decent living. But I was talking about even the people here who own 4 or 5 hectares are not using it for big vegetable gardens, they all have very very small gardens no bigger than you could fit in your suburban lot in the west. It amazes me that this is the case even out here in the mountain.

      @@AustralianinthePhilippines there ways around the limits using corporate structures and subsidiaries, but this is relatively expensive and too much faff for the average Filipino...considering many can't afford or even be bothered to navigate the complex bureaucracy involved in even registering or transferring a title....that's why so much agricultural land only has a "tax declaration" and no proper Torrens title...(typical of the many self-defeating over-bureacratic processes in the Philippines)....Another way is to put multiple lots in different (adult) family member's names....but this comes with its own risks and (future) complications 😳.... Overall it is frustrating to see so much land wasted and/or being inefficiently used though...😩

      @@AustralianinthePhilippines oh everything is fine with me and aileen and phoebe but the rest of my family is chaotic. I'm very used to that mess (it upsets me terribly at times as it should..but its all i knew before aileen). aileen is not (and the effects on me affects her) used to it. Needless to say I have to handle things as they come up but I certainly try to minimize how these issues affect her. Also, she has backed off of the urgency to get out of here and "go home" for multiple reasons. Most of which was how it upsets me but she knows I can handle anything.
      That being said...Our life here isn't bad just the remainder of my family tries to drag me into the chaos and I'm a fighter brother. I'm going to dig in and fight it . Not for me of course but for her and phoebe and for what is right. If that makes sense.
