    The button on the front of the camera is actually exposure compensation and it basically makes the shutter 4x slower - it moves the exposure by 2 stops. The light meter is turned on by half-pressing the shutter button.

    The Nikon EM, in its day, caused Nikon no end of marketing problems. Not because there was anything wrong with it, there certainly wasn't. It was just that prior to the introduction of the EM, Nikon had a reputation for making only very sturdy, professional grade cameras and lenses that were quite expensive and would last for decades. This was their first offering of a camera aimed squarely at beginners, and the first time we had seen use of some plastic components.
    The photo magazines of the day questioned whether the EM was a "real Nikon", called it a toy, and even suggested that it had plastic lens elements, which was never true. But Nikon had used plastics in making some parts of the E-Series lens bodies made to go with this camera, which at the time was considered shoddy. Those lenses were optically great, except for perhaps the 28mm Series E, which I'd call "good enough". Nikon saved money on the physical construction of the EM and its lenses when compared to its other products. What is really funny about this cool little camera, which I still use today, is that when people handle it, they remark on how sturdily it is built. And, compared to the entry level Nikon DSLR of today, they are right.

      All correct. Olypus and Pentax started the trend toward smaller, lighter compact SLRs, After a few years Nikon realized that this was a major shift in non-pro sales, and these other companies were eating their lunch in a big way. Nikon hopes the FM/FE line would cover that segment of the market, but not so. So very late in the game, Nikon launched the EM, which has practically no user control over exposure. They also issues a series of "E" lenses, which they openly advertised as good enough, but not as good as real Nikkor lenses. The idea was to hook new photographers on Nikon compatible lenses but denude the EM body to mkake it unattractive to most users. It took Nikon a couple of years to accept that the EM was too stripped to draw folks into the Nikon family, so it was replaced by the FG, which may be one of the most perfect cameras ever made for what is was. The Series E lenses draw a lot of contention. The 28mm is a total dog by any measure. There are tons of 50mm 1.8 lenses, because it was the kit lens with the camera, and many buyers never bought a second lens. It is a decent 50mm, but as with all E lenses, is not multi-coated. Other Nikkor 50mm lenses will do better for little or no more money. The 35mm is said to be the same lenses made for the Nikonos cameras; the 100mm seems to be outstanding, but is fairly uncommon. The 75-150mm zoom is supposed to be outstanding for a zoom of its specs in the day.

      It will operate with fixed shutter speed, the flash sync speed. The only controls you will have are aperture and focus. So you need to be good at reckoning correct exposure. This wasn't a big deal 30 to 40 years ago because that's how we all took pictures. Most people who do manual exposure today do so by bracket & chimp-ing or by taking cues off the automatic exposure system first.

    • @ghw7192
      @ghw7192 7 років тому

      You have to lift the ring surrounding the ASA dial to change it. If that doesn't work, the exposure latitude in a lot of color films will work in your favor. Don't know about now, but older Fujicolor films had a 6 stop latitude: Correct, 3 over and two under. Good luck!

      I was selling these in a camera shop I managed in Atlanta when they first came out and have used them since, but I'm still not seeing what is wrong with which of my statements and just what won't work. Film latitude or setting the ASA. Once Nikon introduced the FG, that pretty much put EM sales to rest. The MD-E drive helped improve the grip on the EM, but at 2FPS, wasn't much quicker than a fast thumb. The Md_14 was an improvement, but the shutter release on the drive instead of the camera was awkward. Oh, I sold my first photograph about 50 years ago, managed two camera stores for over 16 years before digital was just finding its legs and was a studio owner specializing in legal and commercial photography for 32 years, so I'm quite comfortable with film and especially Nikons as I still have about 30 of them dating from the S2 rangefinder to the F5, so please tell me what I have wrong as I may very well be, but would like to know. Thank you!

    For those who want to start film photography journey.
    1st: If you are rich and can spend shots just like this video author showed (no offense video is great overall) you can load film like in this video showed.
    2nd: If you are not rich and you want to get more shots out of your roll than: 1. By keeping canister in a hand put a film leader (narrow piece of film sticking out of canister) into the take-up spools cutout. 2. move winder till canister touches the camera. 3.Go to the dark room (rooms like bathrooms, toilets, closet with no windows, turned down light and closed doors works well - main thing, you shouldn't be able to to see anything even after spending more than 10min. there). 4. In the dark room: take a canister and pull it till it can be placed in camera. 5. Fix the canister with rewind knob. 6. Rewind the film a little bit back to make a little bit of tension on the film. 7. pull the winder till the end, by finger check if film winds out of canister like it should. 8. Close the lid properly and you can go into the light. On the shutter counter you will see that you are before 0 or on some cameras 6letter S (Start). Do not waste your shots by shooting just to get to shot number 1. You can shoot from the S and in the end you will get 39 shots out of roll. Be smart and creative ;)

      @@forwardcameras thank you for great videos and effort. I love to shoot film and its always painful to me to see how hundreds of people on UA-cam waste a lot of shots just by loading the film. Wish you a great day and 39 great shots in a roll 😉

      @@IvarsDayLab I'll try to keep this in mind, how many shots do you get if you don't do this?

      @IvarsDayLab 2 роки тому

      @@bridgettepierce7144 If you don't load in the dark - you get 34-36 shots. If you load in the dark you get 39 shots per roll. If you bulk load and load in the dark - you can get up to 50 shots per roll. If you develop your film than it can get a bit more challenging to hand a longer piece of film. But overall you get more satisfied t.

    Is double exposure possible with this camera?

    • @ghw7192
      @ghw7192 7 років тому +3

      Difficult, but yes. Before you make your first exposure, turn the rewind knob until the film feels tight. Hold your finger on the knob so that it doesn't turn and take our photo. Without moving your finger from the rewind knob, press the rewind button on the bottom on the bottom of the camera and then advance your film. Ideally, since the EM is an auto exposure camera, you should change your ASA to compensate for the 2nd exposure. IE: First exposure at ASA 400, 2nd at ASA 200 and not easy to do while holding the rewind knob. Easier if you compensate with your f stop, though. Shooting at f/8? Make your next exposure at f/11. If you have been living a good life and holding your mouth exactly right, the film registration will not have changed and when you make your 2nd exposure, you'll have the double exposure.

    At time frame....4:00, you should have said....IF YOUR NOT USING THE DECIATED NIKON FLASH, ( sbe ) BUT A OFF BRAND FLASH.....YOU SET THE SPEED TO 90. At time frame ...8:40, wrong. again. At time frame....8:20, you can leave the shutter dial on AUTO. Now advance 3 time, then the auto metering system starts. You DON T have to put it on 90. At time frame...10:00, wrong.....see DAVID D comment, just below mine. What.....Hmmm.... no word on the AUTO WINDER........

      Aperture controls the amount of lens reaching the film.
