    • @Pastaaa204
      @Pastaaa204 7 днів тому

      @@paulmeersa7162 actually the reason why the state assets were even acquired in the first place was bc the nz economy was built off the back of Maori loss and even then the monetary settlements (is often lower than the amounts reported as it included preemptive rights to purchase back out assets which may be forestry blocks that contain landlocked Maori pa and wahi tapu sites among other things) are often determined by the Waitangi Tribunal and is dictated by what the crown is willing to part with - not the true value of the loss. This is why most settlements reflect a 1% or lower reflection of the true economic loss, it think we have to remember that in amidst of the urbanisation of maori policies era that the govt intentionally crashed the local economys of thriving Maori communities so Maori could be forced to moved into cities to provide a cheap labour work force so this has been happening fairly recently in our history plus what happened in the 1960s. So the settlements aren't that horrific when you consider that Maori have been exceptionally patient and willing to compromise in terms of monetary value - we also have to deal with on going abuse in regards to our customary rights that were upheld in settlements by others. It's quite sad to be stuck in the middle, I understand why some people are angry at us Maori but really that's misplaced anger that needs to be redirected at nzs govt. Had they done and held to the crowns obligations, their people wouldn't have been led astray and haboured Ill will towards Maori. I don't think there was ever a time in history where there was a monetary reward for the imprisonment or killing of pakeha, the same can't be said for Maori. It's quite sad, but I understand your anger is just misplaced bc of ingrained ignorance.

One would be able from a certain point of view to make the case in the 70s for the WT as it was at that time ,but you didn't need a degree to see we were opening Pandora's box.

    I'll quote you on that, Dr Mike.
    "But here's the secret to a lot of what is going on. Tribunal members were not, at least in my day, paid a retainer fee. They didn’t receive an annual salary but were paid a substantial sum on days they participated in hearings. That was an important consideration. I think what's been happening in recent years is that many Maori have been hoping that by constantly submitting new claims, they could effectively turn Waitangi Tribunal roles into full-time jobs and earn a fortune. That was never the original intention."
    "In my day, the chair was an outrage. They would carefully select committee members to achieve a desired outcome. Unless the minister intervenes and establishes a system where either they or tribunal members choose hearing participants, there’s always a risk that the chair will manipulate the results."

    The Waitangi Tribunal is a co governance system and run bu the government. Maori are not dipping into white bank balances, because the grievances are to the crown, in which all Kiwis pay into. Maori lost a lot at the time of the English colonization. I am disappointed this platform is separating Maori and Kiwi Pakeha more. Gosh lets just get on with life and enjoy what our country have to offer for us. If we keep just focusing on maori and pakeha, you will miss the bigger problem and that is increased immigration and very soon you will have people from other countries running our country ie: Islamic we already have grants for those who affiliate as Muslim . What is this telling you. Maori already been colinized more than once they can see another form of colonization where Pakeha like you dont see it. I disagree my tax payers money going to this culture or religion. What hypocrites the government is. They take away from maori and give to another culture.

The need Maori now have arosed out of the breach of those rights, so to address Maori needs you are actually recognising that certain rights have been breached and it seems to me it would be quite wrong to call the addressing of need as a special privilege. It is also wrong because it misinterprets our history where the taking of power, the taking of land from Maori actually resulted in the privileging of Pakeha.

    • @RupertBeard
      @RupertBeard 7 днів тому +15

      Power was ceded by the Chiefs signing the ToW (not taken) and Maori willingly sold 92% of their land in the decades after signing so lost any preexisting rights in that land. Maori wanted and gained the privilege of a civilised society that largely stopped the killing and slavery, including laws that protected their lands, they gained roads, infrastructure, education, healthcare, commerce, warm clothing and housing, science, modern agriculture practices, metals, pottery, the wheel, a written language, all leading to a doubling of lifespan for maori. This is our history, documented facts, not the subjective opinions of grifters like Jackson. Maori should be grateful.

      Maori sold 92% of their land (not stolen) after signing the ToW
      The land sales are all recorded by the Native Land Court with the documents still existing to day.
      Some land was confiscated due to a minority of maori going to war with the NZ Government, after signing the ToW, and losing. Some of the confiscated land was from tribes that were not involved in the war. This land was largely returned and maori were compensated so stop complaining.
