I was hooked on the 07 Vietnam during practically all the music accompaniment clips, but when he solo'd the Ric on the USA 74, my pupils dilated... That thing sounds amazing...
The 74 sounds amazing! Great mid clarity, and less low end:) the cts drivers were basically guitar speakers very low Xmax low wattage that's what all these new cabs are missing! I buy a cab I expect to be able to blow the speakers if I happen to drive them to much;)
I thought the '74 was the stand out as it had great definition and was very versatile. I suspect this would have a lot to do with the well worn speakers though.
I think well worn speakers are a definite factor, but I'd like to think the lower wattage speakers also help a lot with the definition and versatility of the '74 cab. I completely agree that it was the stand out of the bunch.
I think they got progressively worse sounding as they progressed into the future. I would like to have an early cab with the removeable dolly. I have a SVT Classic cab from about 2000 and heads from about 2000 and 2005ish. I'd like an early 70's v4b and a mid 70's svt, just for old time sake. I mean I need. NEED
thanks for doing a real comparison.i cant count how many times I go to hear a demo and they don't even play they talk, great job brother!!!! plus using different basses and styles of music, very nice!!!
I love how for once the cab is miked with a proper dynamic mic with a reasonably flat mid EQ instead of a scooped kick drum mic you usually see. I like the mids in my bass tone and I like being able to get them through to the audience! :) I'd take a friggin' SM58 over any kick mic any time and get the low end from a DI.
The highs on the US 74 are a touch more subdued and has a fuller lowend. Aside from that they all sound very similar when mic'ed and in a mix. What they do in a crowded room and from what angle is harder to ascertain.
The 6 x 10 HLF. Goes Deeper . It's ported on thee bottom , and has the horn if u are into alot of tremble in your sound .. 8 x10 every set of 2 speakers are sealed off from everything .which ins called Infinite Baffle ..the 6 x 10 has alot more freedom when playing 3 notes together example Pink Floyd Shine On You Crazy Diamond part 6 ... My playing is Classic rock and it's great for that . I tried out both cab playing Shine On and the clear choice was the 6 x 10 .And i have used it playing at churches as well as out ..And it fit in my Trans Am con. 02. Put top down , fold down rear seat ,move drivers seat forward and put in ,load bass case , put top up ready to go .. It is a little lighter than the 8 x 10 But it is 300 watts also .. It is easier to move than a 4 x 10 ..I had that cab first . The wheels and push/ pull bar really make it easu to move ....
The 74 cab is the only one that doesn't have that nasty fart to it, definitely a lot better low end too. And that's a 74 loaded with the CTS speakers, Altec Lansing speakers were available as an upgrade, I'd imagine they sound even better.
To my ears I feel the 2007 Vietnam model sounded the best to me. Granted the USA 2004 had a tad more low end but the 07 Vietnam model had more midrange punch and top end clarity. I personally own the 07 model and I use a 2006 USA made SVT-CL head and it is like a match made in heaven. It has a huge bottom end and that classic Ampeg tone in spades.
They all sound different, but only the old '74 cab has that midrange peak. The others all have less midrange and more bass, so seem more scooped. In the mix it was harder to pick out the differences, more so with the pick. On the first demo, that midrange push really helped the bass growl and defined the notes better.
To be honest I think a second room microphone (large condenser) might have been useful to hear the sound of the whole cab and not only closed miked speaker-sound. But beside this a nice shootout.
surprisingly the 2008 China cab came out first in my opinion. it was a perfect middle ground between the warm low mid punch of the '74 and the definition of the USA and Vietnam cabs but without the muddiness of the former and the harshness of the later.
They all sounded fantastic, but honestly, the only one I'd take out would be the Chinese cab. It was my least favorite. Those Legends in that Vietnamese cab are suuuuper bassy. Both American cabs sounded awesome as well.
I respect everyone's individual opinion but I think everyone needs to keep in mind that the 1974 cab has WAY more use on the speakers than the newer cabs. And did you notice that the magnet structure on the 1974 speakers are different? Imagine what the newer cabs are going to sound like when the have about 40+ years worth of wear and tear on them. I had a 1970 Ampeg SVT head (Linden, N.J.) and matching cab and it was AWESOME! Still have the head but sold the cab. Also tried a 8x10" from about 1985 and it didn't have the clarity, low end definition or overall balance of tone the 1970 cab had. P. S... I sold the cab but I will never sell the head!
Great comparison ! thanks for uploading ! I mostly prefer vietnam's 2007 distinct voice . can really imagine it cutting through in a loud band situation !
I know about the antipathies for the late 90s till 2005/6 cabinets, but nevertheless I'd go with the 2004, preferably the AV Version with a silver front. It's close to the 74, especially in combination with pic playing. There is no big danger to damage the speakers compare to an old 74, and if this happens, you can buy them without takin' out a loan, cause they're still available. But without a doubt, the 74 is wonderful relict
I really like the Eminence loaded cab. I'm a guitar player, though, so I'm kinda coming from the perspective of wanting a bass player I can hear, rather than a really round, soft bass tone. To me it went Emi loaded, then the 04, the 74, then the Chinese one. The two US ones were pretty close in my opinion, though.
I would say the 2008 chinese and the 1974 usa sounded the best to me hands down. The newer, 2004 USA, sounded a bit too "boomy" and blunt for my tastes and the vietnamese sounded slightly weak. Gives me hope for the chinese made cabs.
My 2cents: This seems to be more of a speaker comparison vs cab comparison. How can you tell what the cab sounds like when your ear (the mic) is only listening to one speaker?
How do you get this growl out of these amps? Is it a pedal of some sort? I have a CL-300 Heritage and the 410HLF cab , playing a Fender American Jazz Bass with the gain maxed out on the amp and the sound is still very clean...maybe a tad distorted if I pluck the hell out of the strings.
thanks 4 this good quality post. I just bought a '78. my used cab says made in usa, svt810av. is mine a 25th anniversry cab ? it was bought new in 2010, cheers (ps: LOVE ur playing. espeially the distorted jam, the first one :) also, do u know if my 78 svt will play 2 cabs? 2 800watt cab? do players even do that anymore? ciao from california :)

Hello fellow I wanted to know if you have that kind of data ohmns 1x10 bring the speakers of the bi-amp 4x10 + 1x15 boxes from already thank you very much
Do you know if the 1974 can be used with SVT-CL's or other 300watt SVT's at loud levels or would you risk fucking things up? Its wierd how low watts the 1974 is compared to the others, I guess it was because the amps back then were less than 300w???or am I wrong. I dont know alot about Ampeg history. All I know is I just bought a used SVT-AV and am searching for a cab. Any recomendations???
Right, I know, but I was asking if you could use a 300watt SVT with the 1974 cab or would it get wrecked pretty easily? And i was just saying its wierd that the 1974 is 100w when all other 8x10's are 300w and that it must have been because it was made for the V4's!
Honestly my favorite "fridge" is the 2×15 model. Same dimensions as the 810, just with essentially 2 1×15 cabs stacked (both ported.) have one from the 90's that is just killer for bass and synth.
im actually surprised how bright the slm cab was they are usallt real dark.i have an slm from 96 and a Vietnam cab.plywood is better than chipboard and the Vietnam cab has punch and big bottom also.i use an American svt but I must be honest my Vietnam cab is pretty good.i wish when you reviewed these cabs you could have played chords and used a 5 string
+Acrylic Recording At first I thought this was gonna be the best when I saw those Eminences in it, but it sounded like it was strugging to keep up with the amp. distorting like a cheap POS
The Chinese one sounds very muted, it's more bass-focused and muffled as if you're palm muting every note. The 1974 one sounds fine I guess for a more vintage tone, but wouldn't really cut it for my style. The speakers have less power and are very midrange-focused, they don't have a lot of bass or treble. The difference between the vietnam one and usa one from the 2000's is almost nonexistent. In a blind test I think the 'nam one is a little bit more clear and balanced, and stands out in the mix *slightly* more. But that's probably just because the speakers in it were swapped. Really the difference is negligible. My main cab for the last 12-13 years has been a 1990 USA-made 810E. Early 90's - late 2000's Ampeg era was the best era in my opinion. That was the golden age of the brand before they started outsourcing a bunch of stuff to china, putting out cheap shit and ripping off their customers
It sucks. I'm getting too old to lug one of these around. I'm playing approx. 50 gigs a year, and I've ALWAYS wanted one of these, but the guys in the band keep telling me I need to go small combos, and/or DI with in-ears. 20 years ago, I stood in front of one of these and nearly knocked my head off, and fell in love. But, alas, it looks like I will never own and play live with one of these.
I liked the legend drivers the best, except in clips 4 and 5. There I think I liked the cts drivers, but since they can't handle 300 watts that cab is a no go for me. I don't like how dark the particle board cab sounded and I also didn't like how bland and generic the MIC 08 cab sounded.
See his t-shirt? We know where his heart really is.

Mateusz Piotrowski i think yep lol
ive always prefered the sound of an svt

Oh Man, The '74 SVT cab does it for me. What a beautiful sounding cabinet. Thank you for posting this great demonstration video.

For me, none of the cabs sound bad, but different. Nice comparsion. Thanx!

The 74 is just a standout for me. I would have never expected the difference.
Low end from the di?! I hope you mean the amps di and not a di off the bass itself.
I wouldn't 😂 and trust me, I'm a midrange dominant player. But ya know, every engineer has their preference.
Agreed, that being said,SM58/57 dynamic mics have pretty hyped high mids and treble and proximity effect boosts from the low mids down to about 50Hz.
Finally. A video without constant slapping. Keep up the good work mate.
Had an old 2 x15 ampeg slim back from the 70’s that sounded amazing.
Every milimeter you move the mic could affect the sound enormously, so thanks for lots of recording time and examples , nice demo!
we used measuring tape and took grill out to position the mic
I had one and swiftly traded it off. I'm running an Ampeg SVT Classic through an SWR Megoliath 8x10 now. That rig slays all.
The highs on the US 74 are a touch more subdued and has a fuller lowend. Aside from that they all sound very similar when mic'ed and in a mix. What they do in a crowded room and from what angle is harder to ascertain.
im amazed how much the tone varies
Need to use a 5 string and see if the cabs distort the low B

9:20 Rickenbacker 4001 through the 1974 USA cab... *N U T T E D*

ohh the 74 seems to reproduce the basse's sound better than the others. Great test, thanks.
I just love the fan!!!
the 74 had the warmest sound but the Vietnam had really nice mids..
The 74 wins it for me. So much more clarity and I was surprised it had the least overdriven sound. Why is that?

What is that opening song/riff?
USA 2004 is modern sound! 1974 is vintage...
Fernando Carías ... and vintage sounds gooooood !
Maybe they should have placed the mic at about three metres away to get more of the 'cab' sound rather than just one of the drivers.
The 74 sounds awesome. Must weigh a lot more! The plywood being 3/16” thicker and the speakers look heavier.
thank you for not playing that slappy shit that no one cares about. THis sounds mean and raunchy. Love it
