There is thing with Michael: You listen, after 3 seconds you are under his spell. You think wow this is beautiful. And then he is going to take the music up a level (chord change, harmony, sound texture, something), and then you have reached some otherworldly level of beauty... And then he does it again, and again... you lose consciousness after a while, overloaded with beauty. At the end of the tune, he gently brings you back home down on Earth. And he does it all over with the next tune!
As a deployed soldier feeling alienated and not being apart of this system I’m in, I lay here on my bunk in the tent, the darkness tonight feels comforting.. thank you
Kudos to you for taking up the bass! It's a beautiful instrument and I think you'll find a lot of joy in pursuing it. And thank you for the kind words!
Michael, wow. I'm so affected and mesmerized by everything you play. It was really nice to meet you and get the chance to play together. Thank you for being an amazing musical light in the world. We are so lucky to have you. xo Sally
Wow, the manring himself, I love your work, especially that one jazz cover you did in the 90s or something. It was a red bass and you had vibrant hair. So coool
Mind. Blown. Again. That floating capo! You are always innovating, always pushing boundaries. Yet never sacrificing beautiful songs just for the sake of chops. You are peerless and I love you for it. Thank you!
No way!!!! I was just thinking the other day how much I want a video of you playing this song! Thank you so much Michael! This is my favorite song on Small Moments!
I like this song. The song "Selene" is amazing, I love it. I heard it all mornings, for 3 years straight, every day; basically was the only thing I could hear, the only song that calmed me down. It help me a lot to overcome dark times. Thank you Michael.
You are an esoteric gift from the universe, an absolute treasure that gleams far too bright for most to properly see...there is nothing of truly equal value I can offer in exchange for you providing so many wonderful insights into y(our) bare soul(s) except my sincerest and most heartfelt thanks. Nobody else even comes close...every song is a journey in and of itself 🤍
Mr Manring, I am so happy to have re-discovered you on you tube! I have been a musician my whole life and have loved your work. I purchased Thonk when it came out as a young adult and blasted it with the windows down for the world to hear. I always consider you a master among masters because of your precision, your composition, and your devotion to melody. I’m so excited to listen to all these videos! This one was beautiful. I couldn’t believe it was almost six minutes long. It went by so quick. Like a trance. Thank you so much for all the thousands of hours of music you have shared with us over the years. You are making the world a little more beautiful with your music.
In a world of social media where dozens and dozens of very good musicians come out, I am thrilled to feel how my skin vibrates when I listen to masterpieces like this. I will never stop thanking Michael for inspiring me in my playing and seeing music essentially as a means of communication through the expression of our soul.
You can not imagine how much this song is beautiful for me. Listened to at significant moments for me in recent months. Thank you for the master piece! 🙏
Truly one of my dreams is that one day I could express my emotions and ideas as fluently, coherently and genuinely as you do with your playing Michael, whether that be on bass or through some other medium. Your music is truly some of the most evocative and beautiful stuff, always so incredibly inspiring. Thanks for all you do.
Incredible!! Would be great to see a tour of your studio/set up. Particularly interested in seeing/hearing more on those other basses you have on the rack there 🙏🙏🙏
It's so lovely to hear a solo bass piece so thoroughly and lushly composed. The motif is teased and pondered, gently let loose to pay off just a smidge only to be lost again to deeper contemplation and reinterpretation. Finally it emerges true and massively triumphant. These are master strokes painting a gorgeous story. It's so uplifting to hear the instrument I love handled so adroitly. Thanks for this profound piece of music, Mr. Manring.
♡ Intro ♡ This performance is exquisite, Michael. i always feel God’s presence while listening to this piece. God is with us in our sufferings, bringing us closer to Him + to others. Redemptive suffering.💛
Hopefully this comment makes sense, it may just be a load of waffle but I didn't want to just give a thumbs up or say you are a great player! I found your Book of Flame album on CD in London, UK in 1999 I think... was so gutted some years later when I got a scratch on it and it stopped playing! The Book Of Living and Dying is probably the most important single piece of music in my life. Not only as a beautiful composition but I found the Tibetan Book of Living and Dying in a bookshop later. Reading it made me think more deeply about life and death, and eventually question spirituality and religion in a way that nothing had before and I found my own path towards understanding and inner peace. I don't believe we have souls or that there is any afterlife (that would cause all sorts of problems with thermodynamics!), but certainly we are all connected in the present through our past actions and we are all on our own journey through space and time. Thank you for being a part of my journey, and enriching it so greatly with your music. Peace.
Thank you so much for your beautiful story! I'm very touched! I'm so glad the Tibetan Book of Living and Dying resonated with you. Some ancient wisdom there...
So, you made me do a little research. It looks like somebody new has bought the space and they are attempting to restore Nighttown to its original glory the best they can. So, in a few months, you might have an excuse to make it back to town!
one of the most impressive things about this is the 4 strings lol i have to use 7 or 10 to achieve even remotely similar vibes ! but thats why youre the master !
Love this Michael. I wish one day to meet you or see you perform live. I wonder if you can tell me about your effect? Is that chorus? Any tips on settings for this? Don’t use that Boss Gt-5 pedal anymore?
I'm using my Boss GT1000 for this and the effects are nothing special -- just reverb and modulation effects, but I'm controlling them with my feet so they're pretty dynamic. For this patch I do the mod effects with my right foot, reverb with the left. On the recording I used my VB99, which I like a little better for this piece, but I can't take it on the road anymore 😢
Thanks! The tone is mostly in the bass for this one. I'm using D'Addario nickel round wounds and predominantly the bridge pickup, but the credit goes to Joe Zon!
@@michaelmanring1 Cool, I have an Ibanez with Barts, thinking of trying some different ones though. It's the SD GR 5 string, I truly need to try it on some higher end amps though before I mess with them. Hey Michael it truly means a lot that you reply to these, your one of a kind in your playing and kindness, ok enough mushy talk lol. Have a great new year brother. J

Agreed
Please, if you ever have the time, Mr. Manring, it would be great to see a performance of Encirclements. Thank you for this one, love the song.
Thank you. Will do!
When people tell me "It's just a bass", I tell them to look up Michael. Always an inspiration.
Been a fan for well over a decade, it’s classical bass if there is such a thing! Michael you’re a genius, beautiful work as always! God bless, Mike C.
Thank you, Mike! I hope it's not pretentious, but I think of what I do as a kind of 21st Century chamber music.
One of my favorites from the Small Moments album, crazy captivating!
Thank you for the inspiration as always, Michael.
Thank you, Alexandr! 🙏🏼
My favourite track from Small Moments. Brilliant!

Your playing is one of a kind. Left me speechless. I'm on my way to learn the instrument, at 42 years old. Always loved bass and rhythm

do you have any sheet music or tabs available for any of your peices, for purchase or otherwise?

Maybe for harpsichord
