Thank you! We’ve gone over options. There’s something definitely there, but hoping it’s a cyst or a hernia. Unlikely to be a hernia, as apparently they can happen but close at an earlier gestation. But it could be a cyst. They’re thinking it’s omphalocele which is a genetic deformity of the abdominal wall that causes bubs insides to be a bit on the outside, but still encased within a membrane or sac. It’s not gastroschisis like I thought, as that is loose intestines, no membrane, and there was definitely a membrane seen on the scan. But it’s too early to tell the contents of the lump, so we are hoping it’s just a cyst or something less ominous.
I was talking to my midwife aunt, and even if it’s omphalocele she has nurses lots of babies that had surgery after birth and they did amazingly, and that was back in the 70s before a lot of advancements in medicine. She said she even cared for a mum as a midwife and then her baby, and the mum has in-utero surgery to fix it. Decades ago! Which is somewhat fascinating to my medical/science mind, though terrifying to consider actually being the one in that situation frankly. But her positivity helped ease my fears of even the more serious scenarios that could happen.
