  • I've now used this tool many times and have formed opinions on some of the features. I point out some of the good points, shortcomings and give a few tips.
    ERRATA: a friend challenged my statement that the lathe does not include reverse jaws for the chuck. I went and looked again in the little box of parts/tools - lo and behold I found the reverse jaws wrapped in paper at the bottom. I hadn't noticed them when I set up the lathe. YAY! I can now machine my steam engine flywheel.

    We have all done it, you only forget about the t-handle once. I personally like safety, I have spent too many visits to the emergency room due to tools failing or my own misuse of them. As for tolerances, there is many ways to fix that. All machines have to be set up and dialed in, I would go so far as to say even very expensive machines will need regular adjustments. As you mentioned Utube has several good videos out there. I appreciate you not boring me to death. You were factual, and to the point.

    I love it!!! You broke down. 1. never thought of how to stop the tool suction under the lathe DONE! 2. never thought of cutting the chuck cover DONE! 3. every 3 jaw I know of comes with the outside jaw set to go up to 3" find out why you're missing them! I think LMS sells them seperately 4. high range and almost 1/2 for Alu and brass and 1/4 for 1018 with that insert set with motor oil.... watch clickspring on turning brass and tooling and drilling .. good review!!

      Dave M you were right about the three-jaws. Upon further searching I did find them in the little parts box. (I'm a little embarrassed). Thanks for the comments!

      Nothing to be embarrassed about! You never had one before so its all a learning curve. Just picked up another HF 7x10 and rebuilding it now. Interesting the different defects from my first one. Will show the work upcoming.

    Great review. I have an old Seneca Falls lathe and the jaws don't reverse, but now I remember seeing some extra jaws in one of the drawers under the lathe.

      Skully Wood & Metal Thank you - I also have learned so much from these UA-cam videos...

    CORRECTION: When I made this video I did not realize this lathe included a set of reverse jaws. A friend challenged me on this and it prompted me to look again in the little parts box that came with the lathe. To my surprise, I found a set reverse jaws. They were wrapped in waxed paper at the bottom of the box under the tools and gears. Sorry if this caused anyone confusion. I will correct this in my next video!

    Whoa...a comment below says you found the reversible chuck jaws....not limited to stock under 1 1/8”??? That limitation alone dissuaded me. Now it’s back on my buy list. I am enjoying the mini-mill for cutting sight dovetails....may just have to expand my capabilities. To me it’s all about capabilities and the knowledge gained along the learning curve..I have no pressing need. Hmmm...press...did I say press?? How much do presses cost?

    I'm going to get this lathe for working on pool cues however I understand the head shaft inside diameter is barely big enough to get the cue stick through it, wish it was larger so the back end of the cue could fit as well but I guess for the price a workaround of creating an external steady rest with a bearing should do the trick as well. I know you could buy a 16" bed extension for this lathe as well for about $80

      YIRMASTER interesting....I’d think you’d want a wood lathe?

      @@JimmiePorterAtStuartArts No because I'd be needing to work on brass, steel and plastic as well and this one would be more durable and accurate. For the amount of work and the kind of work I do on pool cues this will do the trick. I'm planning on mostly making cue butts and making carbon fiber shafts but making the parts for the ends, the threads, and other misc crap I need for working on my quad and cars as hobbyist would probably be the best unless you have a better suggestion, I'm all ears.

      YIRMASTER I see....it’s great for small metal and plastic parts...I think the spindle bore is something like 3/4”....

      @YIRMASTER 4 роки тому +1

      @@JimmiePorterAtStuartArts Yeah that's good for the shaft not the butt, with the bed extension it should be long enough to make the butts as well, if not I'll have to get a wood lathe too. Custom cues can go for a lot and I plan on making them with a mix of wood/colored epoxy with pieces of exotic woods. Not for a business, just as a hobby and maybe sell some for extra bucks but I like doing things myself.

    Get the LMS Steel QCTP set! It will make you Lathe Life much better.. Next upgrade is the LMS 16" bed. My Lathe is so old it was pre shield.

      Wouldn't recommend the off the shelf quick change tool post and holders, really flimsy. Some machines come with them installed, best thing ever done was junk the mini lathe.
