My first back country experience was landing at Mackey Bar. There’s plenty of room but being the first time from 500 foot it looks small. It helps to do your homework and know where your emergency go round needs to be. Had a great breakfast any way. There’s six more strips to explore. Love Idaho.
This is pure inspiration to forge forward.. I'm just starting a Rans S21 build, and this trip (and your video) is my target. Thanks for the great content.
Excellent, providing a pilots eye view for approach and departure is very helpful, when combined with your commentary. One of the best videos I have seen.
Thanks for the video. I grew up in Adrian. My sister and her family still live on the family farm. I live in New Orleans. Before moving here we lived in Klamath Falls. Really miss the Northwest.
We are heading out there next spring and will do several trips through the year. Love your Idaho videos for the visual and the approach explanations. 👍🏻
HI Verdi, If you like the outdoor lifestyle, it is a great place to live. Few people, most of the land is public land, meaning you can hike, camp etc virtually anywhere over most of the state. Great skiing, plentiful everything and much cheaper than living in England at least. Go visit, see for yourself; best of lcuk in your decision!
David DeChambeau Thanks for the insight David. If I can find an architecture/ design firm over there that allows me to do my internship over there, I will probably do that!
Brian this is excellent STOL guide stuff! Thanks for recommending the book had no idea it was out there. While I'm months away from my own STOL plane, watching content like this is really helpful because these back country spots I want to one day visit. Great video, flight tips and locations...more please! Subscribed and belled!
A really great video that i enjoyed watching. Nice ride along with you, look at the plates, listen to your vice over description and watch your technique. Some really cool places for sure.
Thanks for sharing these fantastic videos Brian. I'd love to see you do a review on the approach/departure of Indian Creek (S81) if you're out that way. I'm sure it's no problem for the Kitfox, but I've always been fascinated by its offset approach and the long climb out through the mountains.
Very nice and great stuff from all the pilots in Idaho. I am from Indiana, flat land, and have a new desire to fly low and slow. Watching the KitFox guys in the Idaho videos will cost me some money. I plan to practice in the Midwest for a while, and then a trip to fly Idaho. I have been to Sun Valley multiple times for a Power Engineering Conference over the years and love the state. I am considering a Zenith 801 primarily because I have no experience with a T-dragger. Any advice? BTW. the midair collision video is heartbreaking. My sympathy's with the family's and friends of those that were lost. I will always remember that video and out of respect for the pilots a tragic reminder to me about radio traffic in the pattern. The loss is a vacancy in everyone's heart but I am sure good memory's will always remain. My sympathy and respect goes out to everyone.
Idaho is such a great place to visit by airplane. I'm sure a 801 would do great there, but don't be afraid to get into tailwheel airplanes. There is a reason that the vast majority of backcountry and off airport flyers fly them.
Awesome video! I am glad to see there are a few folks out there still filming just to share their passion for the love of aviation! I subscribed so now you can do what the others do and tell me that this video is sponsored by Aftflight, CarbonCat and the fine folks at Boise headsets.
I am only sponsored by the love of flying, so no need to worry. I will recommend things I find useful or products that are great but not because I have any affiliation with them, only because they may be appreciated by others. Thanks for subscribing.
Did you wave at Tripod lookout on the way into Cascade? I would suggest the book, Bound for the Backcountry if you're interested in the history of any of those strips. Thanks for the video. I have enjoyed them all.
Nice! How’s your performance with that O-290 as compared to Kit-Fox just like yours but with the Rotax? Oh, BTW, I’m planning on building a Rans S-7 in the near future and I’d love to fly up to Idaho and do some backcountry flying....it looks like a really fun playground. I’m also going to check out that link that you provided and probably get the iPad app like you did.
Mark H it has 130hp, so it does really well. It is about 80lbs heavier. I find that it performs great down around sea level but as I get up to higher DA’s when the power drops off I can then feel the weight. I have been very happy with it.
Randy van Vliet no I built this one. I took it over as a partially completed project. I bought it specifically because it had a Lycoming already hanging on the fuselage. Personally I’m not interested in the Rotax, but they make a great combination with the Kitfox. I am currently looking at putting a Yamaha Apex engine in one with the STI wing.
RB3 Baize It depends on how I have the prop pitched and altitude, but I usually cruise at 110mph and burn about 6.5 gallons an hour. I haven’t decided yet, but I’m leaning towards building new, this one flys so nice now, I would hate to change it.
Last year I sold N2280J which was s KITFOX IV Speedster with the 80 HP Rotax. It cruised at about 100 mph at 5200 rpm on a Warp Drive ground adjustable prop. Burned about 4 to 4.5 /hr. I miss it.
Awesome call sign... yellow kitfox...

Just found you today. I find you to be a joy to watch. Your flying and building skills are right up there. Enjoying your 7 build.

That was really cool. Never realized how awesome Idaho is
I like that gimbaled (stabilized) camera you use in the cabin. It adds so much to the video.

Super cool backcountry video.
Great video, great scenery, informative and educational. Nicely done and well flown. Cheers from Newfoundland Canada.
Nice Vid of my home state; living in England these days so I miss the weather, terrain, well everything!
David DeChambeau How was it living there? I’m belgian and seriously considering moving there.

Great video. I enjoyed the commentary!
Great video and as a viewer, share in the challenges flying in to some beautiful scenery. I really like Idaho, especially the back country.
Very well done! Your effort is appreciated! Look forward to many more.

Love the video. I cant wait to try all the Idaho air strips.
Great Video

I think I have some video of an Indian Creek approach. I'll see what I can put together. If not I'll be back out there in June.
Awesome flying!
Awesome commentary & video!! Am a somewhat new subscriber!!
Thanks for taking us with you on your adventures!!

Glad to find this vid! I grew up in Redding, now live in Idaho, AND I'm working on a tail dragger endorsement...
Very nice,and well done!!
Nice video Brian. Thanks!
Great video! Looks hi tech, those landing! As I'm not a pilot. Wish i was... Thanks,Dennis
That 4 cylinder has a thump ( lope ) .. like my ford 300 six with a comp 268 cam!!!! Nice flying !!!!!!!
Outstanding!
I recognized Lower Loon from FSX!
Mahoney, the Innsbruck of the back country.
Awesome! Thank you.
Good stuff Brian! Thanks for the info
This is so very helpful. Thanks for sharing and posting it.

Love watching these videos... until I am able to fly there myself.
Ontario, used to live in Payette
payette lake in the back ground on cascade approach

Ill check it out, thanks for the recommendation.
Living the life.
Nice country , all I have is desert n rock mountains
What's that red button looking thing on top of your dash. Compass mount or panic button, lol.
GPS bluetooth receiver for my iPad
Very nice video! What engine do you have in that Kit-Fox.....it sure doesn’t sound like a Rotax.
Mark H, I run a Lycoming O290.

@@BowenAero Ahhh, that accounts for the much higher fuel burn.
Great video, thanks! I want to take our SuperSTOL to some of those strips. What camera gimbal did you use? It seemed to be very smooth.
Jeremy Zawodny That is an Osmo by DJI. It gives me focus and exposure issues, but the gimbal works great.
@@BowenAero Thanks!
These are some hairy places to land at beautiful country. I have been to Cascade lake by car though. Do you fly with the Flying Cowboys ?
I have been known to tangle with them on occasion. Its a good group.
Fantastic video! Might be worth a video but what kind of gear do you usually pack for a trip like this?
kevin that would make a good video. Mostly I take lots of cameras.
Are you from Redding, CA? My oldest brother lives there along with his son and daughter-in-law.
Originally from Oregon, but moved to Redding about 1 1/2 ago. Great area for flying.
Awesome video! What engine are you running in the kitfox? It sounds like your idle is low.
Outlaw Chop-shop I run a Lycoming O290 in my Kitfox.
Are you ever tempted to build a Kitfox SuperSport S7 and go with a Rotax powerplant instead? I assume you bought this one used?
Randy van Vliet no I built this one. I took it over as a partially completed project. I bought it specifically because it had a Lycoming already hanging on the fuselage. Personally I’m not interested in the Rotax, but they make a great combination with the Kitfox. I am currently looking at putting a Yamaha Apex engine in one with the STI wing.
You might consider the Corvair engine, mine puts out about 130hp... sounds good also ;-)
@@mikecrowley4275 Already purchased a Yamaha Apex engine.
I'll bet that Kitfox cruises faster than his pals Cub.
What engine is in that Kitfox? Doesn't sound like a Rotax.
sounds like an old Volkswagen beetle
Lycoming O-290-D
Bryan what air speed do you get with the 290 ? Watched your video of engine swap. Have you made your mind up yet.
RB3 Baize It depends on how I have the prop pitched and altitude, but I usually cruise at 110mph and burn about 6.5 gallons an hour. I haven’t decided yet, but I’m leaning towards building new, this one flys so nice now, I would hate to change it.
Project Kitfox Ok just wondering on avg speed. Thanks love your videos.

For a second there i thought Draco was coming in for a landing behind you.
