I obviously support and appreciate the sentiment of your comment, but sometimes when I see someone write something under an Elliott video like "all of us listening to this song are in it together", I feel like saying "you know not all Elliott fans are in a bad place in life or suffering from mental health issues?" I know your comment is in good faith, so I don't want to seem like I'm ripping into it - sorry. It can just sometimes be a bit annoying to see people continue to fall into this stereotypical idea that his music is only "sad and deppressing" and is meant only for "sad and depressed" people to listen to. Elliott was an amazing musician who wrote some of the best songs in existence - anyone can love his music!
Not all people who love Elliott is in pain but he speaks deeply and resonates with those of us who are. And like op said all of you are stronger then you realize.

This song was intentionally kept off the record by his family after his death. Elliott had recently come forward with friends about abuse allegations against his step father. When he died his family got a say on which songs would make the cut for the final record. They specially didn’t want this track on there bc of its nature
I'm fairly certain this was one of the songs that he recorded during the Either/Or era in either 96 or 97. Most of New Moon, I think, are songs that didn't make it to Either/Or... And I think, of those, the songs that didn't make it to New Moon were put on Grand Mal. The rudimentary mixing sounds like the mixing of a lot of the songs recorded at that time, like the Either/Or alternate versions on the last couple discs of Grand Mal. The electric guitar part is speculated to have been added over top in 2003.
Didn't make the cut to Either/Or, but I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be on From a Basement on the Hill. Had to be released after his death, though, and I think his family didn't allow it

The fact that this was never officially released and is one of his most confessional tracks is immensely powerful. I love IRL easter eggs.
