Missed the opportunity to play Neon by John Mayer on the neon strings
Oh my goodness didn’t think of that! 😆
Damn, you beat me to it
Purposefully didn’t play it so you’d comment 💁🏻♂️
@@MusicisWin haha you’re funny!
Lolol
I’ve actually used the neon strings for over a year and they’re really fun to look at when you have LED lights. They get that cool glowy neon effect in blue light. The only downside to them is that the paint eventually comes off where you strum. 10/10 recommend.
I was really impressed with the neon strings. I didn't expect them to sound as good as they did. The gold ones also sounded great.
I played the video without looking. I only looked when I thought the string soundeed good.
Neon wins.
Yeah, I must admit I liked the brightness of the Neon Strings (no pun intended).
I thought the neons sounded the best as well, which is not what I was expecting.
DR makes a damn good string. Been using either pure blues or hi beams for decades now.
I was impressed with the sound of the Neons as well
The golds do sound the best but I was surprised at how nice the neon sounds. I figured the gimmick was all in how they look but in each setting they were in my top two.
Can vouch for the coated bass strings, the coating keeps the oils and junk out of the windings and while they are not as zippy sounding to start as uncoated strings, they start out a lit zippier than one expects, and stay fresh sounding longer.
@Extra-Terrestrial Radio $40? where on Earth did you hear that? they're like $10 lol
I agree
Gold strings on a blacked out strat with gold hardware would be a fun build, would look nice on a black and gold sg too
Gold strings on a black beauty custom would look great too
Just built another strat for that purpose using Stratosphere Parts, I wanted Red with the Gold rather than Black though

Looks amazing and sounds amazing
@@nocturnal101ravenous6 ,VERY cool..
imagine that on the oujji guitar
I have a all black (literally all black.. as in hardware fingerboard headstock body pickups pickgguard whammy bar) with slide red details strat and I'm wondering if the gold strings would look good on it zhat
I think my favorites were definitely the boomers and the optima gold strings. The boomers just sounded absolutely massive while the Optima strings sounded very clear and resonant.
Personally i play the optima gold strings. They sound absolutely incredible on my Strat but also very dynamic on acoustic guitar. A lot better than the regular Ernie Ball super slinkys i used before. The only problem is that the gold finish is not very durable espescially on the higher not wound strings.
Boomers high E never breaks.
I thought the gold strings sounded dead. Didn't like them at all. Would be curious to hear them on an acoustic though to see if it made a difference, or even a hollow body electric.
I thought the same with the Boomers. Very full and clear sounding. Absolutely loved them and this video is going to make me give them a try again.
I used to use these boomers over a decade ago, they are pretty damn good. I use d'addario now, but I've switched to elixir for acoustics.
Finally! Someone who does comparisons correctly: Clean settings that don't change, all pickup positions, same licks. Thank You!
I really like the sound of the neon strings. I wasn't expecting a whole lot from them either
I remember working in a music store when Elixir strings came out. They were covered in a thin layer of Teflon (I think) so your fingers didn't actually touch the metal. They weren't as bright as brand new strings but basically sounded like strings with a few hours on them but basically forever. I put them on all the wall hangers and guitars I hardly ever played. They lasted for years. They completely blew my mind at the time.
I used to play Elixirs, but my G kept breaking. The shop keeper put me on to Cleartones. They hold up better, and have a different treatment that's still corrosion resistant.
Elixirs are you the best decision a guitarist can make
But they are not that great if you have ground issues
elixirs are amazing but the g string breaking is the worst, ive moved on to daddario xs and they are incredible
I still have a set of Elixers going on 20 years old on my Jazz Bass... they were like $40 back then, I'm scared to find out what they cost now.
I've actually used the neon strings for a little while now and I'm pretty satisfied with them. They're awesome with LEDs shining on them
it's cute until the coating starts coming off and leaves a mess of neon flakes that fluoresce under UV light all over your guitar.
I thought the Dr Neon strings sounded best. Brighter and louder or more present. Distinctively different from the others. And that was a surprise. The gold strings sounded a bit more balanced between strings - but just barely. I think it may be what you are looking for in the type of music you're playing that determines what strings. If you are really into stretching notes or have a real light touch - then the 7s come into play. All told - I like these kinds of comparisons.
I agree. I was really surprised by the Neons...
I'm going to put them on my niece's guitar (I built for her) because COLORS!!!
DR makes good strings across their lineup. Red Devils and Black Beauties sound just like the neons - best coated strings I've ever tried. Sunbeams are great too, not coated and not long life but very sweet while they last.
Definitly Neon! You are right! Think I purchase them from now on. But, i'm wondering why there was no D'addario in the list?
@@Orschd Possibly because they just don't fit the theme/title of the video, at all. If you've only ever tried one set of guitar strings, it was probably D'addario. They're the string everyone has heard already. And they tend to have a reputation for bland reliability. So they would be the polar opposite of where he was going with this as a brand (though perhaps there is one particular oddball string that would surprise us?)
@@laughingdaffodils5450 Right, they have been better in the 80ies. I switched to ghs in the 90ies, then to some mostly unknown brands. Was just wondering if D'addario is nowerdays a choice. But i already ordererd neons. So, it's ok :)
Nice comparison. Most people don't understand just how short auditory memory is but the length of your short playing samples are really great. Just long enough to get a good grasp on the sound but not too long.
Extremely well done sir!
I remember the first time you tried the 13's. And I agree, the gold strings have a little extra something that I also noticed when Davey504 put a set on his bass. I love your work, Tyler
They also work wonders when playing Rocksmith, neon colors match up to the in game strings perfectly
I got the neon strings for the guitar and bass for my son and husband so when they play Rocksmith, their instruments match up to the one on screen better. It does help when you can think red string instead of low E string, etc.
My top two were the neons and the gold, the golds were clearly superior but i was genuinely suprised by how good the neons were..
The Neon string Rock! Adds a funky cool look be slick on a all black guitar.
I've used the neon strings for a while. Originally for myself when I started playing Rocksmith since the colors are the same, and now on my daughters guitar.
This is working well in half a year my wife has learned more guitar than she has in 10 years with me, by using these strings and rocksmith. I never took lessons so i don’t know how to teach her. The game was the trick
@@Ottophil Nice! Probably made her even sexier than you knew;)
On my tablet without headphones, I was surprised to find the 0.013" gage and 0.007" gage packs to be the best sounding. The gold strings were third place for me, while the other two sounded like worn out old strings. Based on this comparison, I'd probably try 0.008" or 0.009" gage on a Strat style guitar if I had one, heavier than the 0.007" gage just to help prevent unintentionally bending strings.
Gold sounded great, but I was surprised the neon sounded so similar. Definitely something to check out, plus each would look great on the right guitar.
Personally, I think the 7s sounded great. They're much more dynamic and nuanced than the heavier strings.
Not on the low end, zero bass or resonance. I think a mix of 7-56 would be nice. Or maybe 8-56 because i thought the 7s sounded a bit too twangy.
Lighter gauge strings always detune when you bend it's neighboring strings. While you'd think this would follow a ratio and heavier strings would detune also due to the effort required to bend the intended string, it's not the case.
lol most people I know only ever bought 7's once and never again! they snap too easily, and kink with the slightest pressure! in my day they were called extra slinky, maybe Ernie Ball thought changing the name to Zippy Slinky would improve sales? back then I think Roto-sound used to make a set called extra ultra lights that were also 7's, personally I would not go any heavier than 11's but it's the individual players sound requirements and finger strength/stamina that will dictate in the end.
@@station2station544 Are you sure you weren't using a floating trem or something? Because it doesn't make sense otherwise. I've briefly played with 7's before and don't recall this ever being an issue.
@@genghissu1185 I've been using Dunlop's Dunlop Reverend Willy 07-38 for a couple of years, my first set lasted months, string broke under my finger tip, against the fret, while in a vibrato.
Pro-tip: when putting on 7 gauge strings, put them on the shortest-scale guitar you have: like a ~21 inch strat.
Longer scale lengths mean more tension, which increases its likelihood to break.
Beware of Snappy McSnappersons!
Put them on a Tele, LP, or PRS with a stop tail or Wrap around bridge or strat with a fixed Bridge, I don't use them with a tremolo system for that very reason but damn makes easy bending and great for beginners to loosen up on that death grip on chords and makes bar chords easier and lets them build bending strength up over time, so you can practice longer without it taking a toll on the fingers as much. Its also great for experienced players on an experimentation or learning guitar for new songs as it allows to learn the stuff from more complex guitarists without killing the fingers as much. People overlook the utility on 7's
@@nocturnal101ravenous6 Also good for beginners because they're so easy to bend out of pitch it makes you pay better attention your what you're doing on the fretboard.
Billy gibbons says that 7 gauge strings will not break. He has a video demonstrating how thicker strings break faster. I like 9's personally. I rarely have ever had a broken string, but i try to keep them changed as much as i can.
@@geraldhoffpauir5048 Billy gibbons also made everyone believe that B.B. King played .008 gauge strings when he actually used a custom set of 10-54. It feels like most of the things he says about strings are just a fad to make Dunlop Rev Willy's sell better.
Seriously man... that golden pedal sounds freaking amazing! It brings tears in my ears! It worths the money for sure
My ears really enjoyed the Boomers. I'm not a guitar player, just a music enthusiast, so trying to describe it properly is difficult. So the best I could say is that the Boomers had a more full, warm, and flavorful sound... to me. Tyler, if the gold were your favorite, what would your 2nd choice be?
yeah, I agree. I understand that they're hard to play on, but I tend to go with heavier strings because I'm totally with you on them sounding a fair bit sweeter.
You have a good ear. I have been using Fender strings for decades but may try out some GHSs next time for that very reason.
They sound the fullest but that's not always what I want, the Gold sounds mellow and silky I love that, he didn't try chromes or cobalt or titanium, (chromes are my favorite way more silky and mellow than the other two, kinda like gold compared to steel) though or flatwound vs roundwound, he needs to do another video bros
The DR multi-neon strings are great for using them with Rocksmith! They also sound amazing and hold up extremely well!
The Boomer 13s were way too dark for me. I thought the neon strings sounded best overall. And I felt the 7s sounded much more lively than I thought they would.
I used to use those back in my band days. We tuned down to c though so it helped stability
Its always pleasure to hear Tyler play
Surprisingly, I thought the Neon's sounded best overall and the GHS strings sounded good on a couple of the settings. The gold strings had a full sound in my opinion. I've used medium gauge (9's) Elixr's as my string choice. They stay in tune and keep their brightness and clean sound for a lot longer than any others that I have used. Good comparison video.
Surprisingly I really really liked the tone from the neon strings. To me they seemed to have the best presence and attack.
i did not expect the neons to be the loudest of the bunch, but then again, i did not expect the paradigm to sound like old strings that need to be replaced :|
Paradigms sounded DEAD.
I've never had a problem with the Paradigms sounding dead. I also pretty much exclusively play guitars equipped with higher output humbuckers or active humbuckers.
Those Paradigms sounded so-ooo flat
@@zakkmylde1712 i believe they were meant for higher output. i had them on a strat at some point and i remember i went back to slinkys in about a month. but, hey, if they work for you, that's awesome ;)
Indeed, paradigms had such a weak thin sound...
Unironically those Zippy Slinky strings sound awesome. So resonant and springy
I often play the optima gold strings. They sound absolutely incredible on my Strat but also very dynamic on acoustic guitar. A lot better than the regular Ernie Ball super slinkys i used before. The only problem is that the gold finish is not very durable espescially on the higher not wound strings. If you want to play them for a while prepare for a patchy gold look
I love these kinds of videos you make, and I think it would be even better if you introduced chapters for each string
Thought the gold ones sounded the most lively too. Something to make this experiment a little more in depth, these are all fresh strings. Let's see the same comparison after 10hrs on each when they are broken in, and then a comparison on how long that lasts. I know when coated elixirs came on the scene it was said that they didnt have that initial crispness of new strings but would last 3x as long in their medium settled in tone.
It might also help if it included a string people have actually tried before, such as a DAddario 9's or 10's or anything familiar. Ya need a known reference point to start from. EB 7 gage super slinkies is just not that place
Good point
@@jeffmckinnon5842 yeh I would've liked to have D'Addario's as well
I used the neon strings when I started playing on a cheap squire strat. The colors matched up with the colored strings in rocksmith and that's where I started to learn to play and the names of chords and technique. Pretty great memories to be honest. It's a great way to start someone off for their first few months.
My friend has the neon strings. He really likes them a lot. Don't believe he uses any other kind of strings😂
They sound dull, not worth the looks
@@FrankFurther I used them on bass for awhile, and dull is a proper adjective for them. Not even the kind of dull that you get with flatwounds, but something different. They also feel kind of.... sticky? Not the same kind of coating on elixir strings that's for certain.
@@FrankFurther my wife uses them on a squier for rocksmith. Its basically a step above the guitar hero controller, she doesnt exactly care about tone. Shes just trying to learn. For that reason. They are nice.
But that squier never goes into an amp. Tone doesnt matter one bit for her
I've been a fan of the Boomers for over 20 years now. I just love the rich sound they have. I was surprised by the sound of the Neons and Gold strings. I may have to give those 2 a spin some day.
Gold strings have been a thing for bass for a long time, John Entwhistle of The Who loved the sound of new gold strings, so he’d have them changed constantly when recording or on tour… which sounds really expensive!
Brian May also uses a set as well.
He's probably sponsored.
Glad to see so many comments liking the DRs. I've been using that brand for a long time now, and I don't think I will ever switch. I believe I switched to them when I saw Dime had an endorsement with them. Anyway, I use the blacks, whites, greens...whatever color is in stock really, but that powdered coating they have makes them feel like they are already broken in right away. Don't get me wrong, GHS boomers were good, and I used to love them, but I would break the G string all the time. Then switched to D'add and those were awesome...but for me, nothing compares to the feel of the DRs. The sound is amazing, and they look cool to boot.
Yes!! Regular DR High Beams are amazing too!!
As a guitar player who has seen more sunsets than he's gonna, I can't recommend Reverend Willie's .007s enough. The stress removed from my fret hand alone has freed up more practice time for these aging digits. As heard above, the .007s sound damn good.
Oh, and they bend like crazy!
I love those strings
They've changed my entire life. I just wish they packed an extra 7 gauge in. I usually get a custom pack of 7 gauge only from Stringjoy, get a little extra life out of those bad boys. I thought these sounded best as well. Really brings out that treble
I like the string and really excellent job showcasing each but man that strat wont stop staring at me. It's beautiful in a classy way. I wont buy it though because I can't do justice to playing it the way it needs to be played. 10/10 video Tyler!
I used to use 7’s “back in the day”, but had to admit defeat because the top E would break so often - half the time it wouldn’t even survive the initial stringing up! Of these, I was quite taken by the sound of the Neons, they sounded surpisingly good for something a bit “gimmicky” - trying to find a UK source now!
Jimmy pge used to use 7's back in the day. But they had a trick, they changed the high E for a thicker string to solve the problem you described.
I just had a set of Dunlop Reverend Willy 7-38 last months on my Firebird, I finally broke the B string under my fingertip, while vibrato
I totally agree. Those golds sound really impressive. The neon ones I was the most surprised about.
The gold ones has the best tones, paradigm sound lifeless, 13s sound super boomy, 7s too thin in my ears, the neon sounds great too, i personally use d adario 8s
That's funny. I personally thought the neon sounded dull and lifeless. I thought the Paradigm sound in the best. The 7s were two brash and buzzy, but that might be due to the need for a proper setup when changing between these extreme gauges.
@@lapk78 to each his own i guess
I like the Neon's just because of how they look! So cool!
DR Neons -I have them on a 90's JEM just because........ I don't like their colored strings as the plating flakes off everywhere real fast.
Slinky 7's - Yeah dude there is nothing weird about them, in fact I always recommend them for beginners so it makes bends a bit easier and loosens up a bit of that death claw, also helps make bar chords easier, as they progress they can jump up to 9's and 10's, also its great use a hybrid use 7's on G-E high and 10's on Low E-D creates a unique blend.
Boomer strings have their place for SRV fans and such, but why work so hard.
EB Paradigms - I mean If you play real aggressive and are doing live performances then these are for you.
Gold Strings I believe those are the Brian May signature strings, No not really a gimmick as such but it does have a different kind of sound the only issue is because of the import from the UK they are price gouged like hell in the US
Even better, they come from Germany. I've heard some horror stories about people getting the 08-38 set and they accidentally snap them after spending $25 on a pack.
The gold, clear. Realgood sound.
Those neon strings are so colourful sounding.
O_0 lul
Memes aside, honestly, those gold coated strings sounded IMO the best. They're nice and jangly. I appreciate the jangle. 🙏👌✌️🤪🤓
I like the gold strings the best. A great, crisp cleanness to the sound!
D'Addario NY XL's all the way for me. No other strings even come close to the clarity and tone of NY XL's IMO.
Me too. Tho I haven’t tried gold or some of these other types. It took me a long time to find the NYXL and I love them. They have a long life, great sound, great feel.
I have to say, they cost more, but you know where the money went
Years and years ago I saw a video similar to this and it introduced me to the DR Black Betty strings, i tried them and fell in love and it's hard to go back to "traditional" strings.
I'm so glad you've done this video! I definitely can't afford all the strings to try, but at least hearing them lets me narrow down my wish list! lol
I would've liked to have heard the comparison of the same gauge of each brand string. I don't think it's reasonable to compare the sound of different gauges because it stands to reason that one gauge is going to sound thinner than the other.
That being said I love the sound of the golds as well, and was pleasantly surprised with the neons.
Loved the sound of the neon. I like the lower tones
I'd say
007 all the way, but D replaced with unwound from 013's G 022

Right before the video start, or started rather, I've seen guitar strings like glow up ones in your thumbnail but it was on a bass and it was neon green, sounded amazing and the guy knew his guitar
Mayer's been using the Klon whenever he's using just one overdrive, like in the intro for Gravity, so he's probably just not using it to get a dirty tone
exactley. music is win is a BOOMER.
Wow those Neon are something else, I'm sold!!
I've tried all the strings in this video except for the 7 gauge. I've tried the Neons many years ago and imo they sound horrible under high gain settings (I play metal). The GHS Boomers were the shit like 20 or so years ago, I remember Zakk Wylde having a signature set or something before going over to Dunlop strings IIRC, I used those for a while. Paradigms only guarantee that they won't rust or break within 90 days, I pick hard and have really sweaty hands so they still rust and break for me within 90 days... Actually I haven't tried the gold strings from Optima but I've tried their chrome strings which were awesome too.
I hammer the shit out of my strings and couldn't break a set of paradigms while trying to break them without full-blown intentionally cutting them. Also if your strings are rusting that fast you should really be using at least a cloth to wipe them down after playing. I can stretch a set of regular strings for 5 or 6 months if I absolutely have to because I clean them after playing and keep them as climate controlled as possible. But as for the guarantee of 90 days that's about as long as you should have a set on a guitar with regular play without changing them. I keep the Paradigms on the guitars I don't play that often (provided they have SS frets) and they get changed every 6 months or sometimes longer depending on the state of the strings.
@@zakkmylde1712 I used to live in Canada where a set of strings could last me a couple of months. Now I live in Asia where the humidity is over 80% most of the times, and what lasted me 2 months back then only last 2 weeks now. And yes I wipe my strings too ;)
It is also true that I had that set of Paradigms on my guitar for that long kinda as an experiment to see how long it could actually last. I generally do change strings more often for my main guitars.
Just saying that, Paradigms still do break, but it should last long enough for most people.
@@zakkmylde1712 I knew a guy who bled all over his guitar every time he played. Wiping it down wouldn't help.

Gold for sure. It’s cool you confirmed my thoughts in the end
The gold strings sounded the best to me, too, but the Paradigm come real close. The Zippy Slinky's were tinny and thin (as expected), while the neon strings sound almost nylon-esque.
As an aside, I laughed when I first saw the thickness of the high E string on the boomers. I really wanted to see you do a bend, but I totally understand why you didn't :)
Those Optimas sound so good. So even almost like they are compressing themselves.... But dang... those neons.
I've seen 14 to 68 by d'addario for the heaviest guage.

I prefer the gold strings as well they has a nice warm smooth sound reminds me of old higher end headphones just Nice smooth and warm and pleasant to the ears
Maybe it’s my old ears but I liked the brightness of the 7’s. I was surprised by the neons, but the overall fullness of range of the golds put them number one for me. Great video!
def something everyone should do. went thru what was available at my local guitar store a couple years after I started playing and settled on BOOMERS.
Never looked back. that was early 90s
the neon and gold were amazing
2 years ago I discovered the DR Veritas and haven't looked back since, they blew me away.
I have been using the DR neon strings for more than a decade because they sound great, they feel nice under your fingers, and let's face it they look awesome! I have however recently switched my strat over to a set of flat wound strings and I have been absolutely loving them.
Gold all the way, perfect tone and clear as a bell. 👍
0:51 bro that might best tone and playing i’ve heard from you so far
I was surprised by the Neons. I actually liked them.
My go to are M-Steel, but I've been looking for a string for my niece's guitar I built for her. These will be perfect. I avoided them before because I thought they would sound bad... I was wrong.
Oh and your guitar.... Beautiful... Just wow...
I normally hate "reliced" stuff, but that guitar is incredible in appearance and sound. What an amazing musical instrument.
i like the sound of the first set. the color ones. i like the bright sound of them
Fairly clean sounds
Nice comparison. I found myself liking the Neon's and the 13's the best. The Neon's just had nice full volume and the 13's were the warmest and richest to me anyway. Rock on!
13's sound amazing, but you better have a great neck on the guitar or they will twist the hell out of it.
I agree, DR is good overall, can u imagine my local music shop stop selling them? Thats just crazy. And then i mean the ordinary DR, not the neon. I dont think they know that they exist.
this video includes some of the best improvs i heard from you.
I've been using GHS Boomers TnT[Thick and Thin] not those monsters you showed, since the 90's. I love them. Neons look cool.
been using the Neon for awhile, I really like them
They all sound good for their own things and music can be used any where but when side by side the 2nd pack and the 4th pack sounded the purest I gotta explore this now what metals can be made into guitar strings damn thats gonna cost me to make thanks for that
Man, you can play. Big props bro... I just stumbled upon your account through the forbidden riffs vid! Subscribed!
I put those 7 guage strings on a highly modified squier mini strat and tuned it to G or A standard and it was awesome. It became one of my go to recording guitars.
I LOVE paradigm guitar strings, I use them on my 7-String and they really are unbreakable and they sound awesome
Love the versatile DR's!!
There is just a softness with the gold strings that makes them soo good
The neon’s have a great sound. The sound I’m looking for!
I love the sound of the boomers and zippy slinky 😊

In regards to the boomer strings.
Also the Paradigm strings are amazing, I've been using the 10-46s for years
I really like the sound of the gold ones
it may surprise you, but since you're not the only guitar youtuber i watch, i have heard strings like these many, many times
I surprisingly liked the neon a lot, they where the brightest, the gold where nice too but a lot more mellow
the gold strings tone with the john mayer setting hit different
