At first, I confess, I thought these two must be mad, but after watching just two videos, I've come to deeply appreciate your infectious enthusiasm and your relaxed demeanor. A masonry tip that my dad taught me: when you make a stone construction, you can take soil next to it, reserve it in a bucket, and when it's dry and powdery you can throw it at the wet concrete. That will make lovely beige joints rather than gray.

    • @ladyandtheowlman
      @ladyandtheowlman  6 місяців тому

      Thank you for your advice Flandrin, that's a cool idea we've never heard of! We're not a big fan of the grey but over time the weather makes it look a bit less visible. But we'll definitely try your idea in future!

    Get some Arnica oil. When you get a deep or even superficial bruise, soak cotton wool in the oil and bandage it to the area. It won't even bruise and it will be far less sore. I've had a 1" blood blister vanish in 10 minutes.

    Amazing job you guys on the compost toilet, it's bombproof. Even though it was a lot of work the ring beam or bond beam at the top was necessary from a structural point. It's evident Robbie has some excellent construction skills. And nice work on the stairs, I thought Robbie was just going to dry stack the stones, but you grouted them in place - 5 Star job they're not budging. And the landscape scenery backdrop is stunning. Beautiul! Now you just need to plant up native ground covers and various holding plants on the sides to keep them from washing down and making the steps full of dirt/dust. It's a fun process, I don't know what species of plants you have that are best for this. I use things like wooly thyme, and succulents and so on. Such a wonderful place you live! Best of luck in all the projects. We just moved into the homestead/house I spent years designing and the build just finished last year. It's been 10 years of planning. My two boys are already 15/18! Now, on to bulbs, (we planted 1800!!) cleaning up the veggie gardens, adding some fencing, this spring finally planting berry bushes and some cherry trees to join the apples and peaches. Never an end in sight. Happy working!

    • @ladyandtheowlman
      @ladyandtheowlman  6 місяців тому

      Hey Anna! Thanks for your lovely comment. I like the idea of wooly thyme! Whenever we do these projects, I always think of the plants too late. I’ve just started propagating lavender and creeping rosemary now. We have lots of good succulents too which will be beneficial and pretty! WOW. 10 years of planning - that’s a lot of dedication. Whereabouts is your homestead? Spring is the best time of year, everything is coming alive again. Wishing you all the best on this never ending journey ☀️🌱🌟

    • @ladyandtheowlman
      @ladyandtheowlman  6 місяців тому

      Hey Harry. We are VERY fortunate to live in such beautiful nature. Since we’ve been here, we have had enough water for all our needs, including watering the garden and trees. Everyone is a little worried now though, as there hasn’t been a substantial rain in a while, and if we don’t get one before summer, the fountain could definitely dry up. Fingers crossed for some heavy rain in March or April 🤞🏻🌱

      @@ladyandtheowlman Thx for your reply. A friend of mine, and me - we build together cisterns my friend sells -- or we do construct one from scratch . Over here, after some very, very dry years people often want a water reservoir of their own. I wonder if you can find a "hole", or a cave, or something like that - just to set up your own cistern, without to much work. You seem
      to have an eye for the geological possibilities of the landscape. The old Romans had a lot of good ideas of "How to build a cistern". -- A given rocky ground maybe is a good thing for once -- also the lesser evaporation come mind -- the IBC's lose a lot of water in your climate, methinks. As always, all the best to you all. H.

      @@ladyandtheowlman Robbie's going to age, Em...and when he does, he'll bloody well wish he'd listened to you with a tad more earnestness!
      A black water, and gray water gravity feed septic system just makes more sense, in the long run. Far more efficient, and very little maintenance required, once installed. I've only needed mine pumped once, in a decade.
      All in all, good show. I enjoy seeing you both work with stone and crete. It isn't easy, but it does look beautiful, and that's it's own sort of reward.
      Dry-lay as much as you can, as this negates the need to install drains behind walls, when built on hills. This way, hydraulic pressure from water in the dirt or mud behind the rock, doesn't force the rock outward. I'm also enjoying all the shots of the fresh produce being raised on your little farm. Chicken dung makes for great composting, as does sheep dung. Now, if you can just manage to keep the boar out of your garden, you'll be doing well.
      Robbie's going to wear out the suspension on the Rover, if he keeps abusing it, by hauling rock with it. You need an actual truck, with heavy leaf-spring or air-suspension for such heavy work. I love Rovers as much as the next bloke, but not for the hauling of heavy items... Coil spring suspension is less than ideal for such, and parts for Rovers aren't as cheap as we'd like them to be.
      I figure that about the time Robbie hits his fiftieth year, he'll be having a wee bit of a re-think, regarding having a commode, as a "scenic-overlook" for the rest of the farm. That's about the time that a man begins prioritizing his comforts... I know from experience.
      I'm enjoying it folks, Spain is breathtaking in those mountains. Love the work you all are doing, improving the place, and making it your own.
      Keep the bum shots coming lass, they're even more breathtaking than the mountain scenery. Guaranteed to increase views! 😉

      Thank you for your support Viajero! Robbie had no experience of construction when we arrived here 3 years ago, he spoke to a few local builders and got their advice, and then learnt the rest from watching youtube videos! It's amazing what you can learn on UA-cam! After a while, once you have the basic understanding of the materials available at the builders merchants, and the basic practices for how locals build houses nearby, you can figure out a lot of it by yourself. He doesn't speak amazing Spanish but he manages to get by speaking with the builders merchant staff with just a few key phrases, and gets everything he needs at a good price! Hope that's helpful!

    Wear rubber gloves when working with concrete. We have worked with concrete many times and sometimes received minor burns, but three weeks ago after pouring a new foundation, we burned our hands very badly (most likely it was due to the plasticizer). My wife still cannot fully use her hands and still has scars. =((

Few minutes later scaffolding fell and collapsed the wall where the children were. I slid down the wall and was not injured also. if I hadn't driven them away, they would have been crushed.

      @@ladyandtheowlman Hi 👋, It was okay thank you, I am still trying to get the rest of my tools and timber back to my Moulin, in France, if you have not realised, I have had to change my device, Has it had been hacked into?, From what I’ve been told, I so-called friend.,
      It appears that I had left some comments to different people like yourself , and the comments had been removed within two or three minutes of me, posting it, as you probably know, it is very expensive to go back and forward nowadays, especially as I go through EuTunnal, I am hoping one more trip should do it, My basement is filled with tools, equipment, and timber, not enough room to swing a cat, I wouldn’t really do that anyway, 😂,
      And I’m trying to sort out a problem, I am trying to import my motorcycle , HD, Deuce, I had to sell my original one that I had from brand-new back in 2000, in 2019, I had to sell it so I could come over here, Not sure whether I have said, but I had been scammed by my ex partner, and to make things worse she got my so-called family and friends all involved in it as well, The things that have happened, I cannot put on UA-cam,
      But I have one loyal friend him and his wife between the three of us had found a motorcycle same model as what I had. This is what true friends are like they purchased it for me, then told me that I’ve got a bike. , I obviously had to pay him for it, which I have done, At present, it’s not rideable it’s got a misfire or something wrong with it, once I’ve got it here, I can sort it out myself it would give my brain something to focus on,
      Sorry, I am ramping on too much , you all stay safe, Keep up the amazing work, It’s a pity that you are a little bit too far away from me to travel at that present, or I would come down and give you a hand, 🖐️ or 2 🖐️ 🧻🚁😂

    It's a toss up to say whether your are brave or crazy, living on the top of that mountain as am sure it must get a bit windy so high up. I thought I was high enough but you look higher am 2,164" up but you look more and how much of your 14 acres is workable and can produce anything of value. I see some trees in the distance, can you grow trees on the steep land or is it all rock. Even trees come in very handy, like for firewood in the cooler days. Hope you have a large storage for your water as just ow we are getting plenty and mine is full to over flowing and still raining and heading your way if not already there. See you took onboard my ideas for the toilet, just tell the Mrs not to use and bleach or disinfectant or you will stop it working.

      Hey Robert. Nice to hear from you! It’s been an unusually windy month tbh, probably one of our least favourite weather conditions 🤦🏻‍♀️ We are 770m above sea level. Most of our land is workable, it’s all on terraces. We are planting mostly olives at the moment. Our land was an almond grove before, but lots has been cut down due to xylella. We had a little rain this weekend, but not nearly enough, hoping for a big influx soon. Whereabouts are you again?

      696 mtr up next door in Portugal and we have had more rain than we know what to do with and my reservoir is over flowing. Thought you would have got some of it as it came your way as it crossed the border or are you in the N.E. section where they were, don't know if they still. Facing drought situation last time I saw on here. Think I'd be growing something different to olives as you cant eat them or are they just for the E.E.C. subs that they give olive farmers
