Biggest excuse I hear front others for not going natural is the upkeep or they tell me they could never get their hair to look like mine. Usually referring to texture. Unfortunately there is still soooo much misinformation out there about natural hair despite the plethora of education available. People seem to focus more on their hair type than anything else.

A Love 4 Me yup! It’s weird that people are obsessed w texture. They also don’t want to accept that their texture isn’t looser. To me it all goes back to loving what was given to you...🤷🏽‍♀️

Just this weekend I was with my mom and aunt . My mom says aren’t you tired of that by now!! Mind you my sister, several cousins are natural bc of me. A couple of days later she and I are on the phone and she remarks how nice my nephews hair is (he is biracial) and I say to her your daughters and nieces have nice hair too to which she seemed stunned (that there is a fallacy in her thinking)and laughs it off. I think we are so entrenched with euro standards of beauty and what makes everyone else comfortable with us that embracing how you are wondrously made is challenging. I also think bc so few of us grow up not knowing anything about our natural hair that even appreciating how it looks is frightening. What sense does it make to have thin chemically treated hair? Um, none. But we have to have and appreciate our own beauty standards bf we can fully embrace ourselves or our crowns.

Sorry but there's no "thinking" about it. Black people are completely programmed to view eurocentric beaut as the best, and Afrocentric beauty at the very bottom of the bottom. Even though the natural hair movement put a dent in that, black people still gravitate more towards the type 3 hair over 4. It will take many decades to change this as it took many decades to get here. I am glad that now we can have these conversations, and hopefully we can be honest with ourselves.

I agree that “natural hair” is not a style it’s what you are born with. What you do with it is styling. That being said, I do understand what she is saying. Since growing out my relaxer, I have had those same feelings. For me it’s a matter of head shape. I have an extremely high forehead. Wearing my hair relaxed allowed me to wear bangs to “hide” it. Understand that I was ridiculed my entire childhood about it people who saw it. I’ve even had adults point it out as if I hadn’t noticed. Smh. Wearing my hair natural has limited how far my hair hangs down which I feel is an unflattering look. Couple that with having fine, thin hair, I have few styling options. The back grows faster leaving me with a mullet shape. Adding to that, I’ve developed alopecia areata since being natural, which further limits my options and makes me wonder if I should relax again. So there are any number of reasons someone would say that it’s not for them. If you’ve had thick, fast growing hair, that you can do anything with, I can see why it would be confusing that someone else would not want to experience all the wonderful feelings about being natural. It’s easy to say learn to love what you have but not so easy to do.

This is so relatable - as a young kid in school I was constantly teased and bullied because of my big forehead. I begged my mom to let me relax the front so I could get bangs and hide it. Thank God that as a young adult, I realized that if I was going to continue to hide forehead (and every other thing I didn't like about myself) there would be way too many things to do, haha haha. Surprisingly that helped me to change my outlook in life and just embrace myself as is :)

Awesome and very necessary content. My baby girl hair texture is very similar to yours and one Sunday at church the Pastor made that statement over the congregation that, “natural hair is not for everyone” and his daughter have type 3 hair and she’s close to my daughter and viewed her hair type better with assuming it’s true from the comment the Pastor made. After that comment my baby started hating her hair and wanting me to straighten her hair to look like the Pastors daughter hair. It was disappointing to hear that but more disappointing that he believes it. Along with me rocking my type 4 hair and showing her your vids it’s rebuilding her confidence. Thank you for sharing.❤️

Jenelle this is why I miss your channel, you give it to us straight, people are so uninformed about what being natural, if they would just stop and think we were born natural until we got introduced to relaxers, understood the damage that it could do and not decide to go NATURAL but go back to our NATURAL TEXTURE. If you don't think Natural looks good on you then you didn't like yourself from the beginning. For me being natural is a lifestyle because it’s how I was born. It’s how my Creator created me. I don’t wear weaves or makeup. Everything is natural. People need to stop worrying about what everybody’s going to say and do what they feel is right for them. I feel free. I used to worry about what people say so I always wore those enhancements. But my Creator freed me. People are very judgmental and mean. I’ve had people say mean things right to my face (before being natural). As long as my Creator is pleased I will not care what people have to say. I think some women are scared to wear their hair natural because they don’t like their kinky hair. That’s why they say “ it looks good on you but not me”. Free yourselves! The people who run this world are evil. So they put poison in our food, clothing, drinks, air, hair and body products, etc. etc. So yeah those chemical services are laced with killer chemicals. Do your research. ✌🏽

  • @JoyDejaKing
    @JoyDejaKing 6 років тому +24

I totally agree. I always wonder why someone would prefer to put a harmful chemical on their hair and scalp, instead of just pulling out a flat iron. You can be a straight hair natural. Before I had a desire to really want to learn how to take care of my own hair in it’s textured state, I went to the Dominican’s every 2 weeks for a blowout and I never got heat damage. But if your goal is to always wear your hair straight, then that shouldn’t be a concern anyway. My point is, natural hair is more about your overall health than a hair style.

Hi Jenell, I never comment but this video had me thinking for various reasons. I grew up in a all white city. We were the only blacks and my dad pastored an all white congregation. I thought my mom relaxed my hair for it to be more manageable but as I got older I think she did it because it was just the thing to do to fit in with the white culture. We already stood out as a family why make it any harder. Besides natural hair was always looked upon as not being put together or really unique. Not to mention when dating came around the young men said they liked a natural women but always leaned towards the women with the weaves and wigs and straightened hair. I never thought of natural hair in the way you have described it. I've been natural for 14 years but it was because I got healed from terminal cancer and the relaxer was forbidden. I've come to embrace my natural locs but it took some getting used to and a change of perspective on beauty. Real beauty has always been advertised with the black women and permed hair. I think people equate natural hair with fro,s and twists outs styles, as you mentioned. Anyway, just a thought. Thanks for the vid...Blessings

I'm so glad you cleared that up! Finally someone clarifies and addresses the importance of not getting your hair chemically processed for health reasons. I color my hair and I may decide to apply heat to it once in a while. I HATE when people say going natural doesn't look good on them. The majority of them say that although they haven't even tried going natural. So that to me is just mere ignorance. It hurts to hear a woman with course hair say those things when we both know that's the way your hair grows out of your skull!! Body shaming at it's core.

I haven't had a relaxer since May 11th, 2013 however I have had my hair flat ironed 3 times since going natural and my hair reverted immediately and I mean it doesn't stay straight no matter what so this might be why some prefer relaxers over flat ironing 🤷🏾‍♀️ Not me tho. Yes. I consciously made the decision that when I went natural, I would not be straightening my hair often, if at all. Because the amount of heat required to get my hair straight is no joke. It is much less of a process when dealing with relaxed hair. I can't just be out here in the summertime with my straight hair... doesn't work! It just reverts like POOF!

I love this video! I completely agree that natural hair does not equate textured styling! Thanks for clarifying this so eloquently! I don't like when people say that natural hair won't/doesn't look good on them! In my opinion and experience, the women who say that have not attempted a natural hair journey in their adult life OR they have, but didn't invest in educating themselves on THEIR OWN HAIR and because they were discouraged by the work involved in maintaining their natural texture, especially in the beginning, they have up! Again, this is why it's so important to not confuse natural hair with textured styling. God, the Creator, didn't just make you fearfully and wonderfully but mess your hair up. Lol. Your hair is perfect the way it was made! The styles you prefer are your prerogative though! Have fun with it, explore, express your individuality! Just understand that harsh chemicals are not necessary to make your hair look good!

"Going natural is NOT a hair style" so very true!!! I have been natural since 1999. I had a time in between that I thought having a relaxer was a better option because I was doing hot yoga often. What a mistake that was. As soon as I washed it out and looked in the mirror, it was an immediate regret situation. NEVER AGAIN. I have never straightened my hair with heat, only a soft blowout. Yes, of course! I was recently watching an episode of Bridezilla. For the majority of the video, the bride was wearing a wig or weave. I didn't know she was natural until she went to a salon to relax her hair and put it back under a wig or weave! I was like, "but why??" LOL

I don't give a. . . whew I caught myself. But I have lived long enough to know that you can't please everybody. If you relax your hair to please one group of folk, given time and fickleness, then they will want you to be natural. You go natural then they question why you aren't wearing a relaxer. I wear my hair the way I see fit to please me. I keep it clean and healthy. Anybody that don't like it. . . can go jump!!! Love your content. Keep it coming.

I have always had very thin eyebrows and my hair is very thick. Just saying... I can't imagine where she got the idea of thick eyebrows, thick hair. Lol
Anyway I agree many of us don't realize the versatility we are blessed to have with our hair. We can wear it silky straight, or use rods and have curls then wash it and get our kink back. We are fortunate to have so many options. For some of us change is not easy. Even when we know those chemicals are not good for us.

A lot of women don't want to take the time to learn their hair and what works for it. So, they use the excuse of continuing to get relaxers as a way to maintain their hair.

Lowkey I used to say "that would look good on you but not me" but now I don't because I realized it was something else keeping me from doing so. It was really about upkeep( which I realized isn't that bad) and not wanting look like a guy because of big chopping. What's funny is I have been natural now for a few years and I cut my hair very short😂 But people probably say that to avoid some type of internal fear that they haven't confronted about themselves, whether it be their type of hair, looking masculine, upkeep, etc. I'm going to say one thing though going to the salon all the time certainly takes more money than being natural unless you're a product junkie.

  • @NalaAmari

I've had that comment before. A longtime friend of my sister saw me in the store she works in and stated, oh you're natural? Girl your hair is looks nice but I just can't do it. I asked her why not? That's the way God grew it from your scalp, you weren't born with a relaxer. I honestly just think it's conditioning. We've been told all our lives that our hair is nappy, unattractive, and not Good Hair. I think some Sistas, if they don't have the looser curl pattern like a type 3 texture, they don't want to wear their hair because they feel it's unflattering. On the flip side, I've encountered a few women that wanted to go natural but their boyfriend and husband preferred their relaxed hair and wasn't supportive. Nothing wrong with being Natural or Relaxed, it's your choice, just be honest about it.

I have been natural on and off for decades. There was a time when I loved to wear my hair straight, I relaxed it every two months like it was a religion. I loved the fact that I could swim and my hair wouldn’t be a hot mess.
I wore loc’s for 18 years and after my big chop in 2015, I’ve worn my natural hair in crochet styles. You gave me the courage to wear my own hair out, but I’ve only done that on a handful of occasions.
I would love to wear wigs because after years of wearing loc’s I’m too lazy to wear anything I have to style every day.
Black women have the most magical hair ever!!! From a fro to braids to curls to weaves to loc’s and yes, even flat ironed hair.
    Just love yourselves ladies.

I believe that being natural is a way of life. When I decided to transition from a texturizer to natural, I became more conscientious of what I am putting into my body and on my body. I eat more natural/organic foods and I used more organic products from skin care to cleaning and laundry products. I still can't get with organic/natural toothpaste. :-) I do believe that some people equate natural hair with a hairstyle. Continue to keep up the great work and abundant blessings.

Who would have dreamed we would be as educated as we are today? Not just hair but our culture in general. Thank you sooo much for all the help you continue to give. Im sooo proud of us all. And although we still have a lot to learn we are learning. That's the important thing. And no amount of 'negativity' will stop that from happening! (as we all can see)! 👏Yes, overall health needs to be acknowledged. It is often ignored in the dialogue regarding hair care. In 2009, I was sure that I wanted the freedom to scratch my scalp without acquiring a chemical burn during the process. The potential of burns and photos of my grandmother with her afro gave me an incentive to tell my mother that for my birthday, I wanted no more perms! It wasn't until Chris Rock's movie, "Good Hair" that I realized how potent relaxers are! I wish we all knew sooner! 😲 Janelle, you are spot on with your assessment.

Hi sweetie, oh my. ..... I feel soooo sad for our black women. We are soooo lost. I have been natural for 1 yr now, I did a second big chop. The first time, was 2012 I only lasted appx, four months because I saw a beautiful "relaxed" pixie cut style on UA-cam, and ran to the creamy crack. When I tell you my hair rebelled against me, I mean we were never enemies but, my hair was mad. I say this just to highlight in my opinion, our hair is definitely meant to be natural and to deviate from it will cause opposition. Health, thinning, breakage ect.) I have learned my lesson NEVER will I return to the creamy crack, but natural looks great on all of us, God gave it to us!!! and keep up the great dialogue I love you. I started watching in 2012 with the first big chop you helped me so much.

It could be the amount of time we think we need to spend on our hair if we were to go natural. I am natural, but I have 5 sisters and 4 of them are relaxed. They would also tell me they are afraid because of what the texture of their hair might be. I went natural around the same time you did, and from what I see from your videos we have similar textures, so watching your videos on products, helped me. And I was willing to research the ways to take care of my hair. And that goes back to the time issue. You can talk to you are blue in the face, but people have to want to do, is what I have learn. But don’t stop putting it out there, because you have people like myself who benefited a great deal from it.

This whole video is A+!!!!! Get understanding at 9:14. When people say natural looks good on me but not on them...I tend to agree with them. "You right. It probably won't. So style it like you want....

As a natural of 5.5 years, I remember the stress that came with how to manage my hair when my braids were removed (wore them for 1 year during transition). I also cried my first day wearing my natural hair for fear of rude comments and being told about my “Afro.” Also, the upkeep was completely different than my wash, deep condition, blow dry and flat iron routine, because simply wrapping my hair every night was a breeze. Learning that I needed more consistent moisturizing and couldn’t use the hair tools I was used to (brushes and small tooth combs), was a big pill to swallow. So, fear and insecurity was my main concern, but once my relaxer started breaking off my hair after 7 years, I had to be willing to try something different. I’m so glad I did!

Not everyone has coils, curly, highly dense, thick hair . you can't judge someone for doing what they feel comfortable and confident in regards to their hair.
My hair has thin fine density so styling is the worst because any kind of manipulation causes damage if I do the same hair style, so twist, braids, buns, flat ironing I can do only for short periods of time or else my hair get damaged, took me 10 year to figure out what works for my hair. Everyone has their own journey

For me, I think I look like a child with natural hair in addition to the fact that i have thin fine hair that really does not like to be touched..at all! So i find that leaving it alone and protecting it under wigs works best. Natural hair is high maintenance! Everyone has a choice and we should do what we are comfortable with!

I am natural and she is presently wearing some hairstyles and haven’t relaxed in a while so she’s unintentionally going natural. She said to me “natural hair doesn’t fit her as it does me.”🤦🏽‍♀️ I couldn’t understand it. How can hair we were born with not fit you? It has a lot to do with culture and how we were socialized. What some don’t want to do is to take the time to invest and nurture their hair and do some of these styles. IDK . Thanks for speaking on this topic. I never had that remark. I have inspired a few people to go natural to my surprise 😁
As my hair gets longer I get stopped by strangers asking for tips.
Most of them are either scared of not accepting their hair type, or that it's going to take too long, it's not professional when most open minded people don't really care about it in corporate setting. The more I get to talk to random women the more I realise It's just fear based and fear to be judged and feeling that they don't belong.
And I do have some colleagues that are uncomfortable with my hair and keep telling me "oh it looks better when it's in protective style, buns etc". But those people are not very...cultured.
And to be honest I don't care. If I feel like rocking a textured style or a twist out I will do so. Because I love how my hair looks and I'm feeling myself and it shows 😆
If women feel like they have to go natural and feel uncomfortable/pressured they should not do it but in 2018 there are several options to straighten your hair without relaxers.
If you're not doing it for yourself you're doing it for the wrong reasons.💜

I was natural from 9/2014 until 9/2016. I relaxed my hair because styling and detangling took too much of my time. When my hair was natural and short I loved it. My hair is thick and 4c and it looked good and I often received compliments but I couldn't keep that up when I hair grew long. I big chopped my relaxer at armpit lenghth and when I relaxed 2 years later I was already past shoulder length so I know about healthy hair care. Another issue was the gym. I workout 4 - 5 times a week and straightened hair does not last (for me) after a hard gym workout. I'll probably big chop again but no time soon because having healthy relaxed hair is easy for me.

I clicked on this video so fast!! And Yes girl, I 100% agree! People associate being natural with the hair style all the time. But, I particularly hate it when black women say, "your hair is so pretty curly, my hair won't do that, you got that good hair." And all I can think is "have you even tried"? I feel like a lot of women who aren't natural just assume that we get up and go are our curls be popping. NO. Do you know that this wash n go took me 4 hours, and actually a lot longer if you count the pre-poo I did the night before. It takes time, effort, and sometimes frustration to figure out what works for you. I think that's what bothers me the most. Women who look at someone who's been natural for years wearing the finished product of her twist out or wash n go, and say my hair will never do that without even trying!! Drives me crazy, but ok rant over LOL

I'm relaxed and will probably stay that way unless I get locs. It isn't about straight hair for me. I rarely wear my hair straight. My natural hair hates water, clings together constantly, and is always trying to lock up. There is no way I can have length retention with trying to comb out matts and locs ALL the time. I also have no desire to be a loose natural. I'm 11 months post right now, and I'm trying to decide if I want locs or a relaxer, but I think a relaxer will win. It works best for me.

I think a lot of women still say comments like those because they are not comfortable with their texture. It’s sad and not something I like to mention but most people would prefer to have the spiral bouncy hair than kinky hair. It’s still a psychological thing and idk if we will ever get over it as a people. It’s more on an individual basis, you just accepting what you have and finding ways to make it work for you. In regards to “straight naturals” i find the term contradictory if your hair does not grow from your scalp straight and while yes it can be a viable styling option if you stop relaxing only to straighten it constantly I think you still have slight acceptance issues (my opinion)

It's really funny when people say that phrase to me, because PLEASE BELIEVE what I was rockin didn't always "look good on me." We all (well most of us) went through the struggle phase of going natural, but we rocked it and pushed through anyway. I honestly had grown into loving big curly hair, and now my interest in even getting it straightened is just about gone. For me the versatility of styling without getting weaves has been so eye opening, and getting tired of going every 6 weeks for a perm was what led me to go natural. If I were interested in just wearing my hair straight, I probably would have kept getting perms because it's easier for it to remain straight that way. The health benefit (or risk reduction) of no longer getting perms was a bonus for me.
