❤ This is one of my favourite of Tim’s. Tim is a musical genius and spent the first half of his life putting that genius into musical comedy….now we are seeing his serious side with the stage shows he is writing and producing. ❤ Sony may have rejected him back then but he has shown them by becoming an award winning composer and producer! BTW…every time Tim performs this live the solo is completely ad libbed and different every single performance!
Oh also I should add that this song was Tim saying up yours to Sony who refused him a record deal because his material wasn’t deep enough and didn’t appeal to the teenage market
Yes! Rock and Roll Nerd. Also recommend reacting toTim Minchin "Dark Side" (Sydney Symphony Orchestra.)" D, so far, the Tim MInchin performances you've reacted to are from the early 2000's, so you do have some catching up to do - !
He was mimicking Pearl Jam’s Jeremy in the middle and at the end. Also not sure if you are aware that Tim is a virtuoso pianist and wrote the musical score and lyrics for several Broadway musicals including Matilda and Groundhog Day which have shown in the US and UK too. His comedy stuff he sees as a side act, his real genius is in his musicianship and yet he can’t even read music. He played Judas in the Australian production of Jesus Christ Superstar in 2012 but was outraged to find out they auto tuned his voice!
LOL. A bit of background on Tim that gives this song some context: He was born middle class (the sun of a surgeon) into a very loving family, went to one of the best private schools in Western Australia, is married to his childhood sweetheart and has always considered himself really lucky. Therefore the only "dark side" that he can muster up is "daddy never came to my ball games" - which may or may not be true. (He also played sports multiple times a week). The whole irony of the song is that he doesn't really have a dark side. He believes that makes it a bit harder for him to make good art.
Love that you're reacting to Tim MInchin. There are still plenty of great ones out there. You have to do "Prejudice" , "Inflatable You" and "Storm". He actually has a couple of amazing melancholy ones as well called "Not Perfect" and "White Wine in the Sun".
He’s got a Postgraduate degree in jazz piano from the Western Australian Conservatory of Music from UWA so yes he could definitely hold up to playing in any jazz band, especially since he did it without ever learning to read music, he just knows the chords. He’s since gone on (this is late 90”s early 00’s) to write Matilda the musical (he got the Tony award for that one) and Groundhog Day the Musical
That solo alone is kinda like what it's like to have a psychotic break. You're like "oh f*ck yeah this is great", then it's like "WTF is going on", then you're like "well shit, maybe I can get 'fur elise' out of this" then it all disintegrates. Then you're like "HELL YEAH I'M BACK"..... And no-one notices. The best comedy is serious AND silly at the same time. Tim nails it.
I love your reactions. So glad you’re getting back into Tim. If you haven’t listened: Thank you God or Storm. So good! Do Thank You God to see him keep up with a symphony!
Where he differs from Bo Burnham is that he is a musician who did comedy while I feel that Bo is a comedian who used music in his act. Tim hasn't released new comedy songs for over a decade now and is much more focused on serious songwriting and acting and co writing his tv show Upright which i strongly recommend if you haven't seen it, its funny, gut wrenching and seriously very well written. Tim is a surprisingly good actor and i love both seasons of Upright immensely.
D - Please consider reacting to a more recent song by Tim called "The Aeroplane" (released in 2022.) It is hauntingly beautiful. By the way, I really enjoy you and your honest, conversational style - and how you don't seem to miss a thing even when you think you might have!
Every time i hear someone say "sorry but/if" i always interrupt and say that they can say whatever they want. Tim is a whole other level. I don't want to speak. Even when I disagree, I only want to listen
Well, from a 12yr old I swear was trying the entire Minchin look to a 17yr old keeping me up to date on everything he does ….. Sony ought to be crapping themselves now. Let alone the brilliance of Matilda and every otherbloodything he has done. Suck it Sony! Watch upside down if you can.
I will go off the board please----- He gave grad speech at his old UNI- it's called 9 life lessons. 12 minutes FACTS. he just did a 'ted talk' during his last live shows-- CONFIRMATION BIAS. He proves NO ONE is sacred. LOVE YOUR VIEWS
13 minutes-- and lets recognize that was 3+ minutes straight piano solo. He is highly highly taught and talented, NEXT*** You said Ozzie- OK; Tim SAT on a stool- this is a RARE time he moves. What type of talent has the chops, the skills, the lyrics- and DOES IT ALL SITTING STILL. Thats not talent- thats not acting- thats GODS BEST WORK. come on now!!! Thank You God
Tim never plays songs the same way twice. Some of it is on the fly. He never learnt to read and write music properly, he just learnt chords and patterns in music and built up from there.
@@kellymaher3355The orchestra version is fine but I always always recommend this version to people as I feel Tim's solo piano work is much more impressive for this particular song than an entire orchestra. For songs like Thank You God and Cont though the orchestra really elevates and adds a great deal to the music.
@jackwhitbread4583 i agree on all points. 😊 Except: that the orchestra version is more than 'fine'... And that is it so much more than fine that it should be mentioned as worth watching AfteR the solo version...after. Cheers

If anything it was inclusion, I feel he did it to 'Join the crew' and who's better than Eddie?
👍
Storm is really good.

Tim is alway a play writer .tim has many hats ,very brilliant and intelligent man
I love Tim's life philosophies. I could honestly listen to him speak and debate things for hours.
He played this after a 2 hours show , what a goat

Great reaction, yes he makes it look like its on the fly but its actually well thought out and executed.
👍
Tim is SO Aussie

You should try this one : BBC Proms 2011: Tim Minchin - F Sharp (Comedy Prom) 😂😉
in a similar vein to this one: Rock n Roll Nerd.
Rock and Roll Nerd is a good precursor to Dark Side.
I love your reactions. So glad you’re getting back into Tim.

Tim is a much more accomplished musician than Bo.
I love how he performs barefoot, too!! And 7 sharps is really dark!
C sharp major is 7 sharps. This is C sharp minor - so 4 like E major.
@mojobag01 LOL you're right! But 5 sharps still sucks!!

Have you seen it where he has the little girl from Upright singing that with him? Its on his channel, just gorgeous.
If you haven't yet, see: You grew on me
Hahahah when Tim actually responds to you at 5:42 that caught me so off-guard
Great reaction, really hope you do "thank you God" if you haven't already so funny one of his best imo, take care, all the best 👍
Every time i hear someone say "sorry but/if" i always interrupt and say that they can say whatever they want. Tim is a whole other level. I don't want to speak. Even when I disagree, I only want to listen
If you think he can't be measured, watch the 3 minute song. Watch it, anyway.
You should check out Peace anthem for Palestine next, his piano playing on that is really good too
LOL I love that one, I also love 5 poofs and 2 pianos.
Love the reaction, D
H's certainly a little Aussy ... I don't know about Ozzbourne .... 😉
Tell me no heart cry 👍😮💨

👍
it is not on the fly, Watch a while show, He is amazing.

U R the butt of the joke love Yas anyways!
❤isn't his stuff just great! Good work finding out about him
There's another version with an orchestra. I was surprised I loved that 1 just as much as this version.
