- I've cleaned up the base, knee, saddle and table. I'm going to start this phase of reassembly by putting the Z axis and knee back on the base.

Gday, the scraping marks still look in great condition, great job mate, Cheers
The chrome ways are pretty durable. They do have wear in them, but for me as a hobbyist, I think they'll be perfect. The only bit I have the least bit of concern about is the table. There's some scoring under the rear ways. I'm going to run it for now, but might have it ground if it's worse than I thought. Need to get an indicator on it and see what it looks like.
Coming along nicely. Thanks for the look..
Thanks 👍 I can't wait to get it in operation.
Will come in handy when we replace our column mill with a knee mill. Since we have all R8, most likely will be a BP. Thx for taking out Holiday time to shoot the video and share.,,,Bear.
I hope it will help. I go back and look at my own videos when I need to remember how something went together. :)
I tend to use what ever is on sale. I have some Mobile Vactra 2, Hangsterfers, and a couple other brands. All under the work bench in various amounts left in the jugs.
Fascinating...thanks for sharing MLM
Glad you enjoyed it
Looking good . Your one has way less wear on the ways than my BP , most of the scrape marks have worn away on my one . For oil , i use 68 hyd oil with a Caterpillar 1U9891 additive , to eliminate stiction . Cheers .
Hydraulic oil also came up in my searches on what to use. Good to know it does indeed work.
I have a mill that I bought a year ago and finally managed to get it off the pallet and in place last week. The condition looks about the same as yours and I want to tear it down, clean and fix if needed. I’m not a machinist so I don’t know much about this process but it doesn’t look too difficult. What chemicals and abrasives did you use? Thanks for the videos.
I'm not a machinist either! I just play one on UA-cam. 😂 In all seriousness, this is still a relatively new hobby for me and the cost of new machines is something I cannot afford to do, so buying ones that need a little repair is the only way I can enjoy the hobby. Take your time, and you'll figure it out. As far as chemicals, mostly Simple Green, Purple Power for the heavier stuff. I don't usually like to use anything stronger, but I will use Kerosene when I feel it necessary. I don't like to use anything abrasive past some fine ScotchBrite pads.
I'd really like to do some disassembly and reassembly of my mill too. Even though it's pretty new I think it would benefit 😊.
I feel like at this point I have a pretty good understanding of how this thing works. Maybe not so good that I can diagnose everything that could be wrong with it. But every strange noise it makes will have me wondering what I screwed up!
Looking good Greg! I just subscribed. I use Mobil Vectra on my old Clausing lathe, but it looks quite a bit thicker and stickier than what you're using. The way oil from Precision Matthew's (I don't know who makes it) that I use for my mill with the one shot lube system looks like the stuff you have. I think it would work a lot better than the thick stuff in that case.
Thanks for the sub! Yeah, it's definitely thinner than the stuff that came with the rebuild kit for my Southbend. I now know I can get Vactra #2 from High Quality Tools in smaller than 5 gallon quantities. I may pick some up next time I am up there.
If your knee is stiff to turn what’s the solution
My gears don’t look as crisp as your tiny chips in them ? I guess new gears ?
Could be gears, but could also be lack of proper lubrication, or perhaps the gib needs to be adjusted. It could also be wear in the column ways - no easy way to fix that.
Just regular motor oil😊
Um. No.
I just use gear oil. Next time I am in the big city I will chase some way oil. How does it hold up to coolant?
Some gear oil has detergents in it. You don’t want that. And I don’t use water based flood coolant, so I wouldn’t know.
I get my way oil from McMaster Carr. I use their no name mineral based stuff.
I'll have to check that out. Thanks!
Did you learn how to shim it?
I didn't need to shim any of these gibs.
