We are all amazed at the lives of the rich. That’s why reality television shows centering around affluent people do so well. People want to know what it’s like to never worry about the costs of anything. They want to see inside the newest cars and the biggest homes. So, we’ve decided to take you into the lives of the Rich Kids of South Korea so you can see just what it’s like.
First of all, the most well-off kids in South Korea, live in the Gangnam area. We know you probably thought Gangnam was just from the song Gangnam Style, but no it’s a real area and it’s like the Silicon Valley and Beverly Hills of South Korea all at once. When a person says they live in the area, you know they are in the top 1% of South Korean wealth.
The rich kids don’t shy away from plastic surgery. In South Korea, it is common to get procedures done that make your eyes bigger and your nose look longer. These surgeries are an attempt to look more western and to show off to those around you that money can truly buy anything, including your looks.
Being born into a family with money also means that you probably won’t go to school in South Korea. No, the richest families send their kids off to schools in English speaking countries. This gives the children a leg up on learning the language to almost a native proficiency.
From the lavish houses to the dietary preferences, everything is different for the well-off kids in South Korea. Watch until the end of Inside The Lives of The Rich Kids of South Korea to find out which beverage equals affluence in the country.

Rich kids are the same all over the world. They go to expensive schools, using expensive handbags and having luxurious cars. I don't see why coffee even became a part of this video because everybody could afford coffee in South Korea. I'm very disappointed by the actual content of this video.

If they want to find *Super Rich Kids* , they have to go to 평창동, 이태원동, 한남동. Not Gangnam. Gangnam is just one of the expensive area in korea. Not for Super rich. And contents are out of date.

There's so many inaccuracies and misunderstandings on Korean culture here. Asian cultures are often misunderstood from a western perspective. They should have hired a Korean journalist to research and fact check this segment. Because there were so many missed opportunities of interesting points, I have written some corrections below:
    INACCURACIES & MISUNDERSTANDINGS:
    - KOREAN V AMERICAN WEALTH: The difference with Korea and American wealth is that it is extremely concentrated in the prior; there are an extremely small number of very wealthy families that own everything (ex: Samsung, LG, Hyundai, etc). They are extremely private and live extremely privileged lives.
    - SEOUL: A huge proportion of the population lives in Seoul, making it an extremely expensive city to live in. You often hear from Manhattanites that "1m in NY doesn't go far" (due to housing costs, private education, etc). Same concept with Seoul. Segment didn't make that leap and convey this.
    - CLASS DISTINCTIONS & WEALTH GAPS: With a huge proportion of the population living in Seoul, it means there are huge class distinctions and wealth gaps in Korea. There's (1) the ultra-wealthy mentioned above, then (2) the very wealthy ($1m+/yr, includes some businessmen, doctors, lawyers, professors, landed families), then (3) the middle class (in Korea, would be considered the typical white collar worker), then (4) the ultra poor (which in Korea, is often the blue collars/etc). It would have been great if segment clarified which tier of wealth they're examining: the ultra-wealthy or the very wealthy? If they meant to highlight the ultra-wealthy, the segment is almost entirely inaccurate.
    - QUALITY OF LIFE: Notice the differences in classes between Korea and America; America has an ultra wealthy wealthy .01% class, the wealthy 1% ($400,000+/yr), a large middle class, and the ultra poor/below poverty line. Yet, in America, the quality of life is higher, because America is significantly larger, there are more options where to live, and people can select locations which lower cost of living.
Now, imagine taking those 4 classes in Korea and shoving them all in Manhattan. They all have to face a high cost of living. It makes the poor dirt poor and upward mobility for the middle class extremely difficult, making the gap between the higher 2 versus the lower 2 classes extremely pronounced and bleak. This is why it is a big deal for the lower 2 classes, if someone from there marries into the higher 2 tiers.
    - MARRYING WITHIN/NEAR YOUR CLASS: If, as the segment states, that 1 doctor/lawyer may make an average of $300,000, they neglected to understand or mention that in Korea, people generally feel familial and cultural pressure to marry within or above their class. This means that 1 doctor is likely married to another doctor, or someone doing similarly or better. If both are working, this would make a combined income of $600,000, which is well above the 1% mark in America. In Korea, wealth consolidates, class lines have stayed over generations, and marrying above your rank is very difficult and often taboo.
    - NUCLEAR FAMILY STRUCTURE AFFECTING $$: The show also neglected to realize that the Asian nuclear families are very structured and still practice primogeniture. Families--rich or poor--provide for their children well into adulthood and beyond; it's not like America, where wealthy families independently decide whether to support their children beyond 18 or 22 or beyond, and others do not judge. If the family has the means, they also likely bought all their children's apartments for them and additionally still give them a monthly stipend or credit card. This often goes on well into their child's marriage. Note that the eldest son always makes out like a bandit, due to primogeniture, but the others are still taken care of financially (does not always mean emotionally).
    - THIS IMPACT ON THE REST OF ONE'S FINANCIAL LIFE: So, if said doctor above makes $300,000 and is from a family with some means, that family paid for his/her education, etc. This means that unlike in America, many people do not have direct student debt (either their parents took it on, or their parents simply paid for their school)--allowing people to directly take home their entire salaries. This is a huge difference in American v Asian culture. So, if a doctor couple collectively makes $600,000/yr, and 1 or both of their parents have means, then they aren't paying for their homes and also may receive stipends/credit cards from their parents. The $600,000 goes towards raising their children or investments or just all spent (worst option, but it happens).
    - PRIVATE EDUCATION: This segment made a catastrophic mistake stating that many wealthy Koreans either go to Korean public school OR private school abroad. Korean private school is a BIG THING in Asia--far bigger than it is in America. And there are many options. (1) Asian culture cares more for education, at all class levels; (2) private schools are another form of prestige/separation/networking and also open up better collegiate options (nationally and internationally) and job opportunities in Korea.
    - COSTS NOT FACTORED: The wealthy Koreans go to prestigious private schools in Korea or abroad, AND they also employ numerous private tutors. The wealthiest Asians do not go to large English classes--they have a private tutor come to their home. The cost of Asian education from pre-K through 12 is extremely expensive. This cost goes down in college, since the cost of higher education is significantly less there, than it is in America.
    - a historian & lawyer. If you're interested, please drop me a line. Happy to answer more Qs!

They put BTS in the video atleast three times, reason why, so that people who like BTS will carry on watching that shitty video and might want to watch their other videos, which all of them that are about Korea recently, include BTS either in the thumbnail or in the video. That, person on the internet, is called using someone for views. It is even more obvious and definite when the topic doesn't include them.

Did anybody else find this video rather condescending? "What you will consider rich in the East part of the world, you might find to be just normal in the West"? This is a really inaccurate and very Euro/US-centric portrayal of the world. The middle class in Korea and Japan are much larger and on average more affluent than that of many Western nations. Not to mention the extremely wealthy country of Singapore, and India and China already becoming the next world power(s). It's odd to me how The Talko seems to value a few billionaires in the US/UK, etc. and ignore the extreme poverty that occurs there that is a rarity in South Korean and Japan. And then they were like, considering their GDP, South Korea has relatively few billionaires as if that's a bad thing? Like that means income disparity is less prevalent in South Korea, it is a GOOD thing. Sure extremely rich people might make for a better video, but you shouldn't act like "Oh, these little Asian countries have some relatively rich people, not like our great Western Nations!!" Keep this attitude and you'll end up losing out (you already are) to those nations you claim are averagely rich.

I grew up in a little below middle class family with my grandma(My dad and mom were divorced so they gave my sister and I to my grandma)
She had a very small clothing shop in Seoul that we lived in. She worked many hours to take care of me and my sister. And since I was loved learning, she raised enough money to send me off to US to her relatives.
Watching this video honestly broke my heart because I feel like talking rich people makes people kinda overlook the people who do start at the bottom and work hard to make their dreams come true.

I think it is important to note that prior to the mid 60's, Korea was one of poorest countries in the world. Today it has the 11th largest economy in the world. A rapid growth in a short amount of time. Only recently china has grown the fastest in the shortest amount of time. But seeing how small in size Korea is to china and how much less natural resources Korea has, gives you an idea how badass they are.

They have so much culture that they can teach the west. Their look is unique.they should embrace it rather than have surgery to eradicate it. Don't let the west dictate the definition of beauty.Asians are beautiful just the Universe created them.I love SK and its people. This message is directed to my dear friend who lives in Gangnam.

As a 16 years old student who live in Gangnam, I agree that most of the children who lives in gangnam are privileged but it is not always true that the schools in Gangnam have the best facilities. Since Gangnam has fewer kids than other region of Seoul, the schools in Gangnam actually get less support from the government. For my school, the schoolyards are even smaller than the school building. Moreover, the land-price in Gangnam is super high, so the actual number of school in Gangnam is very few, and the building is quite small. However, the kids in Gangnam gets private education in a place called "Hagwon". Those place basically take kids ever evening (afterschool), usually from 5pm to 10pm or more, for just teaching them (with massive homeworks). So, some elite Gangnam kids finish the whole high school course in age of 15-16, and some of my friends actually do. That's how the 'high-class' Korean education works... I just wrote this comment after looking this video, finding out some errors. It was definitely not in purposed to make a excuse for postponing my homework lol

So, Korea has been gaining popularity with K-pop and K-Dramas lately. And recently, a K-pop group by the name of BTS has taken the world by storm, and now are doing talk shows and appearances in America. Not only that, but the whole North Korea situation has always been a hot topic when it came to politics and current events. Due to this, The Talko has been releasing more videos about Korea to gain views. In the past 2 weeks, The Talko has released 5 videos about Korea. Including a video with the title, "This Is Why K-Pop Is So Popular" and another one called, "BTS Members Reimagined As CARTOON CHARACTERS"

Plus, if anyone thinks becoming an idol is just a phonecall away, you're greatly mistaken because no matter your monetary background, you need to train and basically get from 2-4 hours of sleep in a day and spend thr other 20 working your ass off. I usually like videos from this channel when i come across them but this is just so terribly generalised.
