truely one of the most inspiring musicians that has ever lived. Right up there with The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. The sad thing is that not many people are going to remember him. He's not very well know compared to other "musicians" today, and he should be remembered for his contribution to the love that most people share today. And that love is genuine music. He's also such a humble person and doesn't care about fame. He just wants to spread the love of music, that is a very admirable trait.
@Saintuana Whenever Jimi is introduced to a debate terms like "sloppy" are guaranteed to appear in the comments. But this is a poor description for describing his playing. "Inconsistent" would be a much more approriate term. Jimi new that a great percentage of his performances were sub par (and I as a fan don't denie that either). He freely admitted it and even apologized to the audience sometimes. Most of these sloppy moments were either drug induced or caused by mere exhaustion or both.
as far as I can tell, Paul is a clean and sober musician and his technical proficiency is a result of labors of love. The great guitar players that some refer here to, Jimi etc, were amazing. AMAZING! But should they not have an asterick by there name that points out drug use to achieve results?
@Saintuana Well yeah Paul's technique is flawless, but i wouldn't say Jimi was sloppy. Paul actually memorizes some phrases and licks whereas Jimi only remembered the chords to his songs so he could play around them. If you notice in his playing, there's not too many chords involved. Paul on the other hand plays chords and he plays around them. He mixes it up. They're equally great, but Paul is only much better than most (or all) guitarists on a technical level.
@Saintuana Exhaustion and amphetamine met at the Isle of Wight recordings. But to measure a guitarists ability one should take his best Moment to judge his potential, which would be Filmore East in this case. After Billy Graham had talked to him about him getting sloppy when making his moves on stage he played in a way that was far away from being sloppy. But few people know that nor do they compare the recordings... And in addition to that and once and for all: MUSIC IS NOT A SPORT!
One might say that petrucci, malmsteen, satriani or even eddie van halen is a better guitar player, but everyone has to admit that Paul Gilbert is the best singer of all guitar heroes. In Brazil we would say that "god gave wings to a snake" (deus deu asa a cobra!) Rock on Gilbert!
@Saintuana for improvising, Paul Gilbert stands right next to Jimi Hendrix. Even Gilbert would agree... and not just because he's the most humble and modest guitarist i've ever seen. but because hendrix was just greater without a doubt. as for the rest, i won't argue with :)
I also went to this little concert. It's unforgettable!!

@trinoply Nice logic there. If you're a musician drugs are A-okay kids!

Cornford? =D
CORNFORD ROX
Man, I wish they reissued the pgm100 with a fixed bridge like he has here.
This song is still pretty good without Nelson.
