Thanks for this great video. I have been working with Indian ink on paper for years but painting on canvas is totally new to me. I've been varnishing test pieces done on gessoed cardboard (literally crisscrosses of paints and acrylic ink so that if anything runs or smudges I can see it). I just want to learn how to apply the top coat of glaze (the isolation coat, as they call it, if you want to protect your paintings with removable varnish) with zero brushmarks and your video was really helpful. PS I love your accent, it reminds me of living near Sheffield when I was a toddler 🤪
I’ve been struggling with how to use this as I heard so much about it so used it and wasn’t best pleased then came across this video and it really helped! Thank you! ❤
@@TillyDouglas yep been building up my stock as we in Northern Ireland are going to be penalised even more from Jan 1st. With costs added on for coming here even tho we ARE part of the UK. And our cost of living here is much higher than England, Scotland and Wales as it is :(
Is the mixing with water just for workability purposes? Could the 4 coats be avoided if you did not mix with water or used less water? Also could you not do the 4 coats as left to right, top to bottom, diagonal left to right and diagonal right to left to not miss areas?
Mixing with water does help it spread easier and also helps to get rid of any air bubbles. The way I do it is still the exact same way I do it in this video... top to bottom and left to right repeated... I've never missed a spot yet and I really don't think it would make any difference if you did it diagonal. But of course, this is just my preference, feel free to do it the best way for you. 🌹
Hi, no they are not prints, these are paintings that I did myself. As long as the paint has been left to dry well, a light wipe over with a wet wipe does not remove the paint... I wouldn't scrub too hard or too long, as that could remove some of the paint.
I just scrolled and did not see a video of the glossy medium vs. High gloss varnish. I would love to see how the effects of both look next to one another before I buy one.
I just got an acrylic pouring set & have used acrylics to paint on wood & pbn’s but can only draw stick people. Is it a must to have those big hair dyers as can’t lift big heavy but canvas’s will stay small! Just ordered this gel medium & you can mix into your acrylic with it also but don’t use to much? Ty & you do beautiful work!
Hi Paula, you don't have to use a hair dryer, you could use a straw and blow through that, or a turkey baster, or there is even a very small blower (which I love) that you could use. I have videos on using all of these... This is one of them using the little electric blower. ua-cam.com/video/BT7r5JdmCA8/v-deo.html
Thank you Tilly as can’t afford all these things all at once & have a small hair dryer & won’t be doing big ones as have no rotor cuff on my r. shoulder so if smaller shouldn’t need as much heavy things 🤗! Just learned about putting panty hose over top of Floetrol bottles as gummy parts will then go into your cups (learning as much as can before starting) & then don’t have to wonder why have big globs of harder stuff coming out of a bottle 🤔!
Hi Rhonda, I haven't tried it with watercolor paint, but if it was mine, I would try it on a test piece first... and seal the painting before coating with the gloss medium. 🌹
Tilly, I used liquitex pouring medium in two paintings and liked the satin finish but not what it did to the composition.l..’too flowy/mixed’ and no cells. I then tried using Australian floetrol…loved the composition but when it dried it was dull. Please can I ask, do paintings made with floetrol tend to dry dull and then adding resin/or liquitex varnish brings them back to, life? Everything I’ve followed in your videos has worked so some advise would be appreciated……. confused, retired, frustrated….
Hi Deborah, yes, the floetrol does tend to dull down the colours when it dries, but the resin or varnish will bring them right back to life again! It's my favourite part of the whole process! 🌹
Thank you Tilly so very much for the info provided and your technique. I've spent hours searching for Basics gloss varnish in the gallon and finally sent liquitex a note asking what in the world is up? Now I understand. I wonder if there was a name change for the formula I liked however, you have changed my mind and I think I'll switch to this product and I love the way you thin it down. Uses less product and truly gives a far better crispy shine then my thick layer of gloss varnish which I thought I loved. Wondering how you use this product as a medium? Do you also thin it down for medium use?
You're very welcome Anny! I love this product, and I've been using it for years with great results, so I don't see any reason to change! It really does give a lovely finish, and a small bottle lasts for ages. It has also stood the test of time, as I've never had any yellowing or cracking. I also use it to mix directly in with my paints, as it gives a nice finish and prolongs the drying time meaning I have longer to work with the paint, and it's lovely and smooth. 🌹
Glad I had found you. !! Do you use Aussie cell.activator?..also. is the hi gloss varnish glossed than one you use ? As I want hi gloss but harsh to find. Thanks. Also link to your y tube channel. As I subscribed. Love your art. 😁
Why do you dilute the medium with water? Was that on the original bottle for directions. I accidentally bought Liquitex Basic Gloss Medium. It doesn't have any directions.
Tilly your work is beautiful. I was reading a wonderful article you wrote that gave details for beginners that explained everything such as what paints etc. i lost the article and can’t find it and I really wanted to read it, can you tell me how I can pull back?
Hi, you're very welcome! No it doesn't have much of an odour at all... And it's perfect for mixing with paint, as that's what it's really made for, rather than a varnish.
I actually bought chalk paint but don't want them to go to waste. I noticed the smudge when you apply varnish on top. Even if you let it dry. I mixed it with a little varnish but it muted the color a little. Hoping this will work. Thanks so much! Really have been looking for something that wont smell. I have a very small room I rent so low odor is important
Hi, in theory you can, but in my experience, it's better put on in very thin layers with the cloth. Pouring it on can leave a thicker layer which could crack as it dries.
Lovely! Thank you. How do you determine how much you need for a painting? I have a 16X20 inch gallery rapped canvas 1 1/2 deep I would like to varnish.
Hi Susan, because it's such a small amount used for each painting, I just mix a little at a time and keep it in the lidded pot for the next time I need it.
@@TillyDouglas Thanks Tilly. One small spot did have tiny cracks. Was thinking about adding 1/2 teaspoon of GAC 800 to see what will happen. Any thoughts on this idea?

Can u use this in decoupage coasters? Is this varnish heat resistant?
No, this is for art only as it is not heat resistant.
I would like to see a side by side of MEDIUM and the new Varnish
Can I use brush instead of old clothes?
You can use whatever works best for you, this is just the way I do it because it gives me the best results.

No, I didn't have any cracks at all, totally not necessary to add GAC 800 to this, I thinks it does a great job on its own
Also, can i use varnish on top of the liquitex gloss medium?
I have never tried it, but as the Liquitex gloss is a way to finish the painting, I'm not sure why you would need to varnish over the top.
Do you change out your t-shirt rag with each coat?
No, I just keep it in a little airtight container until all the coats are finished.

What kind of cloth are you using to apply the varnish? It looks like a wet paper towel, no?
No, as I mentioned, it's piece of old T-shirt material
Okay thanks! I must’ve missed that part 🖤
Hi there, i used this varnish on a wood box but i didnt like it. How do i remove it from the wood?
I'm sorry, I don't know as I've never used it that way, or tried to remove it... Perhaps contact the company and ask?
Liquitex Professional Varnishes have UV Proctection, but mediums don't.
My painting is now feeling sticky after using this medium... Is there anything i can do?
I've never had that happen to mine
Does it yellow after time?
I've got pieces that I've had for many years after using this stuff, and I've never had any of it go yellow.
Why are you using the same wipe for all the paintings? The dust from one will adhere to the wet wipe and may transfer to the other painting.
It would be very wasteful to use a separate wipe for each little painting when there is absolutely no need.
