@@mikestarkel6559They probably don’t play every day like they used to. The muscles get weak if they’re not worked regularly. Same as any physical activity.
The people who don't play probably don't realize this, but fast downpicking is the type of thing that needs to be practiced every single day, otherwise you lose a bit of endurance and need to go down a few BPM. If you get "out of shape", and you try to push for it, your arm and shoulder get too tense, this causes them to lock up, at which point the motion is a lot less seamless, and in result you get tired really fast (I'm talking a matter of seconds, you probably won`t be able to do more than 4 bars of continuous downpicking). Playing guitar is like training Jiu Jitsu or Judo, if you go a while without doing it, you become rusty, and by the time you're finished, your whole body hurts, and this continues to happen until you get back in the game.
@UA-cam_gets_dumber_each_year spoiler alert: musicians take a break every now and then. I'm sure James doesn't play every single day. And doing it for a long time doesn't change that. My playing style has been heavily influenced by James, I play around 5 to 8h a day, and have done so for the past 10 years, and it still gets me. It's not a muscle memory thing, because once you get the endurance down, there's no going wrong with it. His arm is cramping up. And it's not a warm up thing, because no professional musician plays without warming up, as it's a good way to end up injuring yourself, and actively reduces the gains for the first half an hour of your playing session.
Yea I used to be that player that would play and practice for hours playing James style but after getting a real physical job and giving me less practice time. It’ll ruin your endurance and stamina real quick
@@zachbrown8421 I work, live by myself, am a college student, train BJJ 2 nights a week, and still manage to do this. The trick is that your time management must be practically perfect, and you won't get to sleep more than 6 hours a day. You do 5h a day when you aren't on a break, and you push more when on a break. For me that's 12h for college and working, 5 hours playing, 2 hour to deal with everything else, and 5 hours of sleep, during week days, on monday and thuesday, I push back to 6h for work and 4h for college and spend the extra 2h training. It's because of the difference when he's sitting and standing, I can play fast standing up all day but if I sit down and try my arm and shoulder are done in about 20 minutes and it's been that way since I was 12. I've tried holding it in different positions and guitar shapes but it doesn't make a difference, if my picking arm isn't almost straight it gets tired really fast.
You don't think he's been playing sitting down in the studio for the last 40 years? Age changes everything. And he doesn't just play fast. He downstrokes at impossible speeds. He's just slowing down.
I am a bassist, since mid 80s (age 54). I too find easier to play fast parts when I am not seated down, (particularly Steve Harris' galopping basslines). When I play standing, the right hand gets tired anyway, and the forearm too, but still it's more comfortable for me to have the right arm rather straight (I tend to keep the strap rather low), otherwise if it is folded it begins to ache. Particularly if I am playing fingestyle, like in Iron Maiden songs. But, in truth, I have always preferred to play standing in every situation. Both in fingestyle and with the pick too. Greetings!
