They are hurt by playing alongside one another a bit. But they are also helped to the extent that they played pre-Mel Blount rule. Defensive players today have to deal with offensive linemen who can extend their arms when blocking whereas linemen before 1978 had to have their elbows hunched.
Still believe that J.J should be in the conversation. Had decent longevity and had a super dominant stretch. Was he injured a lot? yes. But he still had great numbers (more sacks than Donald career-wise). Had he not been injured, I believe that in terms of total career he would've been the best D-Lineman of all time. A couple of story's I've heard about Deacon Jones and Reggie White: I read an interview with Deacon where he would take a small steel plate and put in it the palm of his hand and have one of the equipment guys wrap his hand in a cast the night before the game to dry overnight. Then he said just imagine me slapping the ear hole of your helmet a dozen times a game with my loaded hand. Reggie White admitted he didn't invent the hump move. Howie Long was the first to use it Reggie just copied it but said he could never better Howie's.
Ray Lewis is the best defensive player to play this game. He was a student of the game, worked his ass off and motivated every position around him on the defense which lead to them playing and studying the game harder. He has two super bowls, one sb MVP (retiring after winning the 2nd) and all the numbers a late 90s/early 2000s mlb needs to rightfully call himself the best at their position. Lastly, he’s arguably the greatest on field leader in modern sports.
He changed the game. 2-gap DT/NTs are a relic now. Every team is going straight after the QB w/ 4 men on the line now. Interior pressure wrecks passing games (step up in the pocket? there isn't a pocket) more than edge rushing.

You basically ask a player to tie up the center and guard and take at least 2 of the 5 blockers up and/or prevent a hole for the RB to run into. The big 330lb DTs back in the day were 2-gap players who stayed glued to the LOS. Today, DTs who don't get pressure/penetration can't survive.
@@fortynights1513 nah its just you play 2-gap, that's fine for the offense, it just means the QB has a pocket to throw in. Give a QB a pocket and no matter who it is they'll complete a pass at minimum a 60% completion rate. You get penetration up the middle it just messes up the QBs vision not to mention sometimes can stop a running play for neg yards. You can still have a 2-gap player or 2 as subs but mainly for just 3rd and less than 3 yards.
I cannot wait till they finally get around to figuring sacks for the 1950s. Getting into the prime years of Doug Atkins in Chicago could reveal he had over 200 sacks. He currently has 94.5 sacks and seven seasons left to tally up, three of which are All-Pro caliber. I love seeing what crazy stats the NFL had in its earlier years.

I think Jerry Rice needs brought up in the GOAT conversation more. His stats are just so much far and away better than the next best wide receiver that it’s not even funny. Aaron Donald also played the DT position and the rest of the selections are DE’s or OLB’s. That alone makes Aaron Donald’s achievements that much more impressive
At the very least, most people tend to agree, or at least accept as a valid position, that he's the greatest defensive tackle of all time. The ability to establish himself as an all-time great pass rusher from the interior is extremely rare, and he could single-handedly ruin an O-line's entire game plan by creating a numerical advantage to free up space for other rushers. The number of sacks (and pressures and effective rushes) he got in spite of the countermeasures is insane. In terms of his effect on offensive strategy, my hill is that he has more in common with someone like Ray Lewis in that he shut down the middle of the field instead of one of the sides.

My list has Reggie White as the best DE of all time, LT as the best OLB/Edge, and AD as the best DT. Mainly because like you had mentioned you almost can’t really compare players with such a large difference of eras and what stats were being tracked. For instance TFLs weren’t being tracked until 1994 and still some of the records from 1994 and 2001 are different. As far as I personally am concerned Reggie White, Lawrence Taylor, and Aaron Donald are all tied for the title as the defensive GOAT.

I might sound a little biased as a Texans fan, but leaving JJ out of the discussion is unfair to both AD and JJ's careers since they'd been compared to each other for so long. AD played only 3 games more and they finished with really similar numbers, which speaks more on how good AD was compared to JJ as he played interior more often while JJ was a 3-4 hybrid DE/DT and even won All-Pro at both in the same year.

I feel like if you say he’s the GOAT defensive player that’s not overrating him and I feel like that’s the most you can ask for when you’re competing with guys like LT, Reggie, Deion, etc. He’s in that same room with them.
Donald was an absolute menace who terrorized the league for a decade. But I have to say that having watched both Donald and Watt at their absolute peaks, I would say Watt was more dominant and impactful by a hair. Donald had the more consistent and durable career so he does get the edge overall in his era. I would still rank him behind the likes of Smith, Taylor, and White. Not by much though. Also, when you talk about all time DT's the likes of Bob Lilly, Allan Page, Mean Joe Greene and Merlin Olsen need to be mentioned (though I know the focus here was pass rushers and not just defensive play overall). Recency bias is a very real thing.

Reggie White was holy (see what i did there?) but his DPOY 1998 award raised some eyebrows that year. it was a transitional year, the Packers regressed, compared to their previous 2 years. and White was a situational pass-rusher for much of the year. Check the Packers run defense that season. White was barely on the field for 1st and 2nd downs, only coming on the field for 3rd Down, when he could get the pressure. even back when the Internet was in its infancy, the online chatter thought the award was undeserving. now, whether that was the NFL tonguing Reggie, for his prior awards (think how Collingsworth lubes Mahomes every other play)? or was it just a weak DPOY year, and Reggie was the best of a bad bunch? second thing, dunno if you factored it into the stats, but you didn't verbalise it. Bruce Smith played in Buffalo as a 3-4 DE. the fact he got all those sacks in a similar scheme as the Steelers, and played like Aaron Smith (no relation haha) against the run... AND got those sack numbers and longevitiy should count for more than what it does here. yes, he doesn't have a ring, and stayed too long. but 1985-1999 in a 3-4, shows what a talent he was. and before Peyton showed up, he was considered the best #1 overall pick by a lot of stat geeks, even better than Aikman. Taylor was MVP. Taylor could play any position on the Giants defense, besides CB, according to Bill Belechick. he was playing the Elephant position, sure. but that's like saying iPhones are overrated cos they came out before any other smartphone (even though they are overrated!). Taylor did 2 things that you didn't mention (though maybe factored into your stats). 1) he made teams spend a premium cashpot on, and forced colleges to mould, Left Tackles into something more refined than the other 4 members of the Offensive Line. making them adopt that kick-slide stance Pat Mahomes loves so much, and start their drop halfway into the backfield on every play. that's all down to Taylor's influence. his sheer WTFness that he would turn a team's Quarterback into Joe Theismann (don't google it). and 2) he put Jimbo Covert in the Hall of Fame. Seriously. Jimbo Covert is in the Hall of Fame cos he specifically gave Taylor fits, shutting off his free-flowing rushiness during the 1980s. that was cited (!) as a key reason for Covert's inclusion, during the 2020 player dump. no other player does stuff like this. so for me, it's 1) Taylor 2) White 3) Smith 4) Donald 5) Does it matter?
I think you do yourself a slight disservice in including Deacon Jones but not including the man who's probably the best comp for Donald in Alan Page, one of only two defensive players to win MVP (LT was the other). Ultimately I think I'd land on Aaron as somewhere near the 5th best defensive lineman of all time and in the top 20 defensive players in general.

He changed the game. 2-gap DT/NTs are a relic now. Every team is going straight after the QB w/ 4 men on the line now. Interior pressure wrecks passing games (step up in the pocket? there isn't a pocket) more than edge rushing.

@@fortynights1513 2-gap players (generally NTs) but DTs used to do it too. You basically ask a player to tie up the center and guard and take at least 2 of the 5 blockers up and/or prevent a hole for the RB to run into. The big 330lb DTs back in the day were 2-gap players who stayed glued to the LOS. Today, DTs who don't get pressure/penetration can't survive.

@@fortynights1513 nah its just you play 2-gap, that's fine for the offense, it just means the QB has a pocket to throw in. Give a QB a pocket and no matter who it is they'll complete a pass at minimum a 60% completion rate. You get penetration up the middle it just messes up the QBs vision not to mention sometimes can stop a running play for neg yards. You can still have a 2-gap player or 2 as subs but mainly for just 3rd and less than 3 yards.

I cannot wait till they finally get around to figuring sacks for the 1950s. Getting into the prime years of Doug Atkins in Chicago could reveal he had over 200 sacks. He currently has 94.5 sacks and seven seasons left to tally up, three of which are All-Pro caliber.

I think Jerry Rice needs brought up in the GOAT conversation more. His stats are just so much far and away better than the next best wide receiver that it’s not even funny. The only argument really is “who was more dominant in his prime, Rice or Moss?” We’re never going to see another receiver be as good as he was for as long as he played.

Aaron Donald also played the DT position and the rest of the selections are DE’s or OLB’s. That alone makes Aaron Donald’s achievements that much more impressive
At the very least, most people tend to agree, or at least accept as a valid position, that he's the greatest defensive tackle of all time. The ability to establish himself as an all-time great pass rusher from the interior is extremely rare, and he could single-handedly ruin an O-line's entire game plan by creating a numerical advantage to free up space for other rushers. The number of sacks (and pressures and effective rushes) he got in spite of the countermeasures is insane. In terms of his effect on offensive strategy, my hill is that he has more in common with someone like Ray Lewis in that he shut down the middle of the field instead of one of the sides.

My list has Reggie White as the best DE of all time, LT as the best OLB/Edge, and AD as the best DT. Mainly because like you had mentioned you almost can’t really compare players with such a large difference of eras and what stats were being tracked. For instance TFLs weren’t being tracked until 1994 and still some of the records from 1994 and 2001 are different. As far as I personally am concerned Reggie White, Lawrence Taylor, and Aaron Donald are all tied for the title as the defensive GOAT.

I think it’s a given that Donald is the best interior defensive lineman in history at least. What’s crazy to think about is that he’s in the conversation with edge rushers, who get more sacks and pressures on average

If we go by peak Im definitely siding with AD 😭 Double digit sacks five years in a row as an IDL, broke the sack record for IDL that hadn't been touched for nearly 30 years and had the Rams not as a playoff team but as straight up Superbowl contenders during his peak. Shit now that I think about it AD's peak was absolutely ridiculous. Idk if we'll see this again in the near future

I would say that Aaron Donald is the greatest interior defensive lineman of all time. He's absolutely in the conversation for greatest defensive player, and pass rusher, but he's absolutely the greatest interior defensive lineman without a shadow of a doubt
I might sound a little biased as a Texans fan, but leaving JJ out of the discussion is unfair to both AD and JJ's careers since they'd been compared to each other for so long. AD played only 3 games more and they finished with really similar numbers, which speaks more on how good AD was compared to JJ as he played interior more often while JJ was a 3-4 hybrid DE/DT and even won All-Pro at both in the same year.

I feel like if you say he’s the GOAT defensive player that’s not overrating him and I feel like that’s the most you can ask for when you’re competing with guys like LT, Reggie, Deion, etc. He’s in that same room with them.
Donald was an absolute menace who terrorized the league for a decade. But I have to say that having watched both Donald and Watt at their absolute peaks, I would say Watt was more dominant and impactful by a hair. Donald had the more consistent and durable career so he does get the edge overall in his era. I would still rank him behind the likes of Smith, Taylor, and White. Not by much though. Also, when you talk about all time DT's the likes of Bob Lilly, Allan Page, Mean Joe Greene and Merlin Olsen need to be mentioned (though I know the focus here was pass rushers and not just defensive play overall). Recency bias is a very real thing.

Reggie White was holy (see what i did there?) but his DPOY 1998 award raised some eyebrows that year.
it was a transitional year, the Packers regressed, compared to their previous 2 years. and White was a situational pass-rusher for much of the year. Check the Packers run defense that season. White was barely on the field for 1st and 2nd downs, only coming on the field for 3rd Down, when he could get the pressure.
even back when the Internet was in its infancy, the online chatter thought the award was undeserving. now, whether that was the NFL tonguing Reggie, for his prior awards (think how Collingsworth lubes Mahomes every other play)? or was it just a weak DPOY year, and Reggie was the best of a bad bunch?
second thing, dunno if you factored it into the stats, but you didn't verbalise it. Bruce Smith played in Buffalo as a 3-4 DE. the fact he got all those sacks in a similar scheme as the Steelers, and played like Aaron Smith (no relation haha) against the run... AND got those sack numbers and longevitiy should count for more than what it does here.
yes, he doesn't have a ring, and stayed too long. but 1985-1999 in a 3-4, shows what a talent he was. and before Peyton showed up, he was considered the best #1 overall pick by a lot of stat geeks, even better than Aikman.

Taylor could play any position on the Giants defense, besides CB, according to Bill Belechick. he was playing the Elephant position, sure. but that's like saying iPhones are overrated cos they came out before any other smartphone (even though they are overrated!).
Taylor did 2 things that you didn't mention (though maybe factored into your stats).
1) he made teams spend a premium cashpot on, and forced colleges to mould, Left Tackles into something more refined than the other 4 members of the Offensive Line. making them adopt that kick-slide stance Pat Mahomes loves so much, and start their drop halfway into the backfield on every play. that's all down to Taylor's influence. his sheer WTFness that he would turn a team's Quarterback into Joe Theismann (don't google it).
and
2) he put Jimbo Covert in the Hall of Fame. Seriously. Jimbo Covert is in the Hall of Fame cos he specifically gave Taylor fits, shutting off his free-flowing rushiness during the 1980s. that was cited (!) as a key reason for Covert's inclusion, during the 2020 player dump.

I think you do yourself a slight disservice in including Deacon Jones but not including the man who's probably the best comp for Donald in Alan Page, one of only two defensive players to win MVP (LT was the other). Ultimately I think I'd land on Aaron as somewhere near the 5th best defensive lineman of all time and in the top 20 defensive players in general.
