They really should professionally archive more musical performances more for history's sake!
It would be great if it was custom to do a recording with each new cast of a musical. Even a bonus recording of the opening + last night! So many moments and performances missed across the world.

pkmaniac I believe they actually have the achieve somewhere in New York. I remember Hamilton and Spring Awakening revival being filmed for a national archive. The problem is those arvhives are not for public :(

Wahid Rahman it’s at the New York Public Library at Lincoln Center. If you give a decent excuse such as I teach theater or I’m a student you can watch a show that is closed. In the old days they would wait until right before the show closed to film. nowadays they catch it early in the run. They didn’t start doing this until the 1970s but what they often have of older shows is silent home movie Clips and scratchy old videos if someone happened to do that. I believe a chorus line in 1975 was the first complete show in the collection. That poor quality but compelling video is easily available now on UA-cam. And yes! The official collection is not that available in the sense that you have to go there in person to watch it plus you have to sit down at a screen and watch the whole thing in order a no break. I don’t think it’ll actually be available online because it violates so many copyright laws.

Also, the unions won't hear of it being available to the public. The NYPL had a huge battle with them to get the project started back in 1972.

Pamela LaBarbiera out! Thanks! That’s background information I was unaware of. I research the topic of how it all got started and there’s little info. At least available to me. I’m also utilize that service before the UA-cam boom. I remember before UA-cam there was a big trading market. Someone would say have A real from the original production of follies for example and they be willing to trade for someone’s footage from seesaw. A lot of that stuff is now available on UA-cam. I’m glad because I never had anything to trade

Wahid Rahman actually, you can view them at the Lincoln Center archives, but you need to have some sort of reason for why you want to view the filmed show.

I’m usually super against illegal filming, but this was totally warranted. We were robbed of a cast recording and there’s such limited licensed footage of this production out there.

Fuck you, being "against illegal filming" is so fucking dumb and elitist, most of us dont have money for travelling to another fucking country just to watch a play, dumb ass. It is necessary the existence of bootleg for the sake of theatre.

There is a legal recording of OBC at Lincoln Center of performing arts, if you can make it,it might be a fun trip to see it!

Thank you for uploading! It is rare to find videos of such a fun, wonderful and "antique" masterpiece on youtube. One problem with the video. It's that it's over :D I would have watched this energetic and entertaining performance! As far as I searched there are not many videos of this version of Mamma Mia. And here comes the question! If someone has the 2001 Broadway cast performance why not post it in its entirety? Why can't we see Judy Kaye singing "Take a Chanche on me" or Karen Mason singing "Does your Mother know" or Loise Pitre singing "Winner takes it all". This Broadway cast is a masterpiece. And yes illegal filming should not be done in theaters but we are not talking about just any musical! This is the Broadway cast of Mamma Mia that the world needs to see! Hiding the whole of such a masterpiece from the world! This line up of actors in the musical is long out of date, they are no longer playing the roles in it. If you could upload the entire musical it would be a nice tribute to this wonderful masterpiece and at the same time show the younger generations that there was a Mamma Mia before Meryl Streep! A piece like this version of Mamma Mia should be preserved for future generations! Maybe I am writing too late and the uploader will not see it. But hope never dies :D

Karen Mason is currently touring with the 1st US national tour of Love Never Dies as Madame Giry and I had the privilege of meeting her when the show was in Houston. She was such a sweetheart.
I had no idea she was the original Broadway Tanya until after I saw the show a second time.
Such a beautiful soul she is❤

Strange because the original Broadway Rosie (Judy Kaye) was the original Broadway Carlotta in Phantom of the Opera back in 1988, for which she won a Tony.

Truly one of those shows that when done right brings a smile to your face. So fun doing this show 3 years ago as my first college musical production.

It's a shame I was an infant when this cast was performing, if only I had been old enough to be able to expirience the brilliance of this cast.

Judy Kaye got a supporting actress Tony nomination for her role in this show and she's often said she doesn't think she deserved it because she felt it was a nothing part. Also she turned down the part initially because she thought it was perceived as another fat role which she often felt she got lumped with. Some useless information for everyone.

It’s only a nothing part if you think it’s a nothing part, I like Judy but think that comment is bs, the committee obviously saw something in her that was Tony worthy

French Canadian Louise Pitre opened the North American premiere in Toronto. She then headed a short U.S. pre-Broadway tour before she was officially chosen to head the Broadway premiere.

I recently saw the movie for a second time and was cringing during every musical number. It made me realize how awesome the stage version must have been. And i see, yes. Excellent voices, faithful tempos, nothing to cringe at here. Thank you for sharing!

The Broadway show was wonderful. Saw Louise Pitre twice and came away in love with her and ABBA. On the way out of the parking garage we saw her walking away from the theater and we got her attention. She was charming, so nice. I was really upset about the movie and as I expected it sucked.

If there is it’s rare, think there’s maybe 1 or 2 clips, and they are taken down or it’s the pre Broadway Tour.
