Purple Haze is the song you need to hear. From the fantastic opening riff to his brillant lyrics no other sixtis/seventies tune comes close. I loved your reaction. To go from not having heard much or any Jimi Hendrix to hearing All Along the Watchtower is a trip! He was a generous artist and recorded other people's work as much as his own--here, a Bob Dylan song. Yes, people are so taken with his playing that they can forget his mighty soulful voice. When Hendrix first came from Seattle to London in the mid-1960s, rock-blues guitarists like Eric Clapton went to see him every night. They could not believe this guy's technique. He still has that effect on new 2020 guitarists.
It the cover of a Bob Dylan's tune. Jimmy made it his own. You will love purple haze for example. Look for a live version. Woodstock concert where he does Star Spangled banner is legendary.
You can thank Bob Dylan for those lyrics, because this is a 1968 cover of a 1967 Dylan song. Hendrix loved Dylan and was one of many musicians to cover Dylan's songs.
My first concert, age 14 in '69 at the helLA Forum. After 2 opening bands, Jimi came out at midnight and played till near dawn... Raised in the lily white suburbs, it was the first time I was in a crowd that had a lot of black kids; one gave me my first joint!
His best live performance is when he covers Chuck Barry's Johnny B Goode. Hendrix's performance was so stellar that Chuck Barry said he would never play his own song again. His use of controlled feedback ( high microphone whistling) makes for an epic view. Hendrix's guitaring goes dead the fuck off! This is probably the best musical performance of any musician. It's radical enjoy!
Hands down the best example of his guitar playing is Machine Gun Live at the Filmore East. Many great guitar players have covered a number of his songs and have done a great job like Stevie Ray Vaughn. Not too many have ever even attempted to do this one. It is about 13 minutes long so you may or may not want to react to it, but listen to it on your own.
If you ask a large number of rock guitarists "Who influenced you?" the name you will hear most often is Jimi Hendrix. He's the single most important and most influential guitarist in all of rock n' roll. Other black guitarists worth checking out: Living Colour, Rage Against the Machine, Lenny Kravitz, Animals as Leaders
All Along the Watchtower was written by Bob Dylan, who Hendrix was a big fan of. But Hendrix made this song so much his own that Dylan once said whenever he played it after Hendrix' version he felt like he was playing a Hendrix song. The guitar playing on this song isn't his most show-off'y playing, it's instead just perfectly orchestrated for the song. The song is a masterpiece.
Quay, since you said you love guitar and love the way Hendrix lays it down, check the live version of "Hendrix - Johnnie B. Goode". You will NOT be dissappointed with his skills and command the guitar.
Glad you enjoyed Jimi, I to listen to Jimi 55years ago up to today check out castles made of sand ,you love guitar playing you will love this song by Mr. Jimi ❤😉
Jimi didnt write this song as Bob Dylan did and proves he one of best Guitarist and his carreer was only 12 years . If he hadn’t died of a sudden death from “overdose” and been around he would have even surpassed himself as a Guitarist. He never thought of himself as the best as i have studied his life in different documentaries. Women loved him for a good reason His death was no accident and he knew he wouldnt live a long life . This song of Jimi Hendrix is my favorite of all tiime.
Hey brother, this is beyond Psychedelic rock, it has it's own music genre, just not sure what it could be called, Henrix is the guitar God!!!!! Keep rolling the joints bro 👍👍
In a little more than three short years until his death, Jimi went from nothing to become the highest paid rock artist in the world. He remained the best selling black artist in the world - even after his death - until Micheal Jackson's Thriller album 12 years later. He should be as honoured in the black community as James Brown, Miles Davis and spoken about as being as revolutionary as the Black Panthers.
Mr Hendrix was the best to ever do it also play Johnny Guitar Watson the name of the song is I want to ta ta you I love the way he pick that Guitar an sing a beautiful song
Do not listen. Instead feel the music. Feel it. Jimi made his music not just to hear, but to touch your soul. It reaches into you. I know. I was there with Jimi long ago. You are witnessing a musical genius. His name is Jimi Hendrix. There are many copies, but this man is the real deal. In this song, pick out the individual playing styles. Can you feel them? Tip: Your next stop.......Jimi Hendrix, Johnny B Goode, Berkley. Prepare to be amazed at what a man can do with a guitar!
You missed the boat by NOT watching him play live. If Jimi Hendrix is not your favorite guitarist, he's your favorite guitarist favorite guitarist. He was doing this in 1967. Watch the color video of Jimi doing Hey Joe or anything really.
VOODOO CHILD, WHOLE VERSION, LIVE AT WOODSTOCK, PLUS THE WOODSTOCK IMPROVISATION, AT WOODSTOCK 1969, AND THE WHOLE BAND OF GYPSIES LIVE ALBUM, ESPECIALLY, MACHINE GUN, OR CHANGES! SO, YOU WILL SEE WHY, EVERYBODY SAYS HE'S THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME! KISSES FROM FRANCE BABY😂✌️👍🎸🇫🇷
Quay, you asked for Jimi's best solo? Just my opinion, but I love his take on Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" Live version. Having said that, I can't just limit his best to one song. Also see, "Voodoo Child", "Star-Spangled Banner" and "Purple Haze", live at Woodstock, and the studio version; Then there is his classic performance at the Fillmore East playing "Machine Gun". Obviously, there are many more, but these are a few.
Without question....you gotta react to VOODOO CHILD. It is one of the greatest guitar songs ever. Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/IZBlqcbpmxY/v-deo.html (This is the original classic studio version from 1968). Here's a great live version of Voodoo Child: ua-cam.com/video/xPx-cL2t9TE/v-deo.html Also, check out Jimi's live version of HEY JOE live at the Monterey Pop Festival: ua-cam.com/video/fe82eYRjiBU/v-deo.html
You know my opinion with all you young people Jimi Hendrix is really a stretch he's really not conventional compared to even some oldies that you guys are used to show Jimi Hendrix is really a stretch he's still Jimi Hendrix but he's different to Too Young people's ears
Oh mate. Even Dylan (note spelling) acknowledged Hendrix's version was the definitive one, and he subsequently adopted Hendrix's arrangement when performing the song live. As for "only good for his time," that's risible. People still listen to him in awe today (as this young woman does before our eyes), because his genius transcends time and fashion.
Machine gun from Isle of wight or band of gypsys trust me or voodoo child (slight return) from electric ladyland lp also rainy day dream away and still raining (reining)still dreaming give you one more axis bold as love from lp axis bold as love also Jimi is the goat and don't never forget it
