Those tora tora's are the vivid memory i have of this coup attempt here in manila. I was in grade 4 during that time and its early monday morning(December 1, 1989), you can hear gunshots and exploding sounds from distance my father hurriedly turned on the radio and from there, its Ray Langit whos broadcasting the news that there's a military mutiny and the rebel forces already captured airbases controlled by the government. And as the early morning light shines, we can hear already planes approaching our area, three T-28's (Tora-toras) flying in formation circling our area, were in Balintawak, Quezon City, many people go up to the roof of their houses, some folks on towering water tanks to see those planes flying, they're dark colored. Then minutes came by and we heard another planes approaching, its 2 F-5 jets, they are colored white tailing those T-28 but nobody shoots, those F-5 are just tailing those T-28's im sure those pilots are talking on radio trying to convince each other to either join the rebels side or stop this military adventurism. i guess less than one hour passed and those F-5's peeled off leaving the T-28's in control of that particular airspace, by 9am those T-28 left our area, i guess they in to strike government soldiers positions already. Approaching noon time, a much powerful sounding plane can be heard approaching our area and this is different from the first two aircraft i saw that early morning. me and my friends went up the water tank and im sure what we saw are American aircraft already its like the F-16 that i saw. I only learned about those aircraft as i start reading articles about military aviation and our military history as i grow up. just sharing my experience regarding the 1989 coup attempt. Its a exciting experience for me, but same as other folks im also nervous as well.
Wow. It is just pure lovely people are sharing stories like yours, It must've been pretty scary hearing warplanes flying around near your school.
The scary thing for me are hearing those continuous gunshots and boom sounds, but you would really notice that every time those T-28's or F-5's appears, those gunshots suddenly stops. That December 1989 Coup Attempt happened for a week, so for a week we dont have any classes, the first 3 days i guess are the bloody ones, and those American Planes are flying there round a clock day and night i guess they did this as a persuasion flights. We are just getting information from Radio and sometimes news can be seen also in television most of the tv channels then are controlled by rebel forces.
It must be the some USAF F-4 Phantoms from Clark AB instead of F-16's
If not from those american F16's those T28's would have total impunity on the airspace.
@@unclesamuk8687 just imagine a plane that is not a combat type became Superior to the f4 just imagine that. And if US didn't help Cory then Cory no longer continue her term, but as I see Cory is actually coward really
I sent this to my dad. And I forgot he was stationed at Clark when all this happened, I was born in the Philippines in 89 also
This coup upstaged my cadet battalion’s Tactical Inspection. My uniform was meticulously prepared, starched like they had never been before, combat boots and brass shined to perfection the night before.
I woke-up at 8:30AM in a panic, “OMG, I missed formation! I’m supposed to be in campus right now!” Then I heard the engine drone of the prop planes, “Well that’s weird, why would the Air Force be doing patrols today? They didn’t announce any air shows, no?”
Then I got downstairs and saw my folks listening to news radio. “Another coup? Today of all days? Couldn’t they have held-off another week?”
The RAM-SAF would probably set up a military junta without any powers from both the Aquinos and the Marcoses
My father is a PC-SAF that time and they destroyed Honasan's RAM. Until now I don't like Honasan because of this coup de etat
This things happened because of 1. Cory let go of the NPA Leaders that didn't go well with the soldiers. 2. Political ambitions of Gringo Honassan, and 3. Poor morale and poor economic situation of the soldiers.
4th year Nursing Student ako ng nayari itong Coup d etat. If my memory serves me right this happen in Dec.1989 ang dami kasing Coup attempt noong administration ni Cory ( around 6 or 7 ) .But the 1989 coup is the bloodiest, kung hindi nag intervened ang US malamang noon ay nasipa si Aquino...that time din nauso ang “slang word “ na UZI meaning “ Usisero” if you look at some of the video clips ang daming miron na nanood ng bakbakan , kaya ang daming civilians na nasugatan. At Ang tawag noon kay Gringo ay Gringo O-Nasaan ? dahil after that coup he went into hiding
My father is a member of PC-SAF that time and they destroyed Gringo Honasan's RAM. Until today I still don't like Gringo and I never voted for him
my mom told me this story when she was about to leave manila after school.
she said why there was no school and one of her classmates said "theres a coup deta"
this video smackin frfr. it evoked a feeling of nostalgia in me even though i was born in the late 2000s. definitely looking forward to more of these edits. ipagpatuloy mo yan man

I did not expect this to also happen at my place, I thought this was only in manila when I brought up this topic to my retired grandfather, was surprised when he said "nahitabo sad ni sa lapu lapu ug cebu" (this also happened in lapu lapu in cebu). Talking that the bridge from lapu-lapu was cordoned and is blocked by tanks(probably meant LAV). He said about military with armbands which flags are flipped upside-down to identify if there were coup de tat members. He was designated in manila doing paperwork in the military, as soon as the plane fighting started they went outside to see it. At first I was weirded out why he called the planes "tora tora", it reminded me of a japanese ww2 plane movie. But then it is really an actual term for the planes which model is Trojan something. The thing that gives me chills is that when he was going home (he retired after that) after the peacetalks happened. He was asked which side was he on, he responded "Nagtrabaho rako diri(I just work here)" he presumed the guy asking him was a coup de tat member by looking at the armband and upsidedown flag.
The term is Tora Tora because that 1970s movie on the attack on Pearl Harbor was hit here. Plus, our media tend to assume every prop plane is WWII plane.
Yes, the coup also extended to Cebu. There was a standoff between loyalists and RAM members in the Mactan-Mandaue Bridge since the rebels controlled most of Lapu-Lapu City including the international airport and the air base. The air base at that time housed at least 5 F-5 fighter jets and the nearby airport had one 747 which could have flown rebel troops to the capital.
Bruh i was born in lapu-lapu💀💀💀💀

My parents were here in Cebu during the coup attempt. In was mostly silent here since the standoff occurred on the Mandaue-Mactan Bridge and Mactan Air Base/MCIA.
My Uncle Lived in pampanga, when he drove his car apporaching the free port zone, he saw truck loads of Soldiers with APC’s Including american soldiers, and Defences,
My parents got some interesting stories about this one. It happened right on their Honeymoon.

We were living in Murphy, Cubao which is just around 600 meters away from Camp Aguinaldo. I could still remember the flying "Tora Tora" planes and their terrifying sound. My family and I took refuge inside our washroom since it is the most protected space in our home. Fortunately, the Philippines is in a much better situation now.
Dope video man, do you think you can create more Philippine Army aesthetics when you have free time?
I’ll definitely be doing that soon considering from what I see, lots of my viewers flock to see anything Philippine related

Your country's history is No joke! Show some respect! We are still Alive!
Naalala ko ito. Grade 4 ako. 1 week kaming walang pasok. Ganda ng view point namin sa Antipolo. Kitang kita namin mga eroplano. I can still remember the scenes in my head up to now the T-28s (tora-tora) strafing.
Iyan yung mga di makapaghintay na binayaran ang mga pivate military contractors na nasa loob mismo ng AFP na sumasahod din sa budget ng Pilipinas.
You are hella underated

I had just arrived at my assignment as Battalion Commo Chief for 65th Engineer Bn when I got the alert call from the SDO. He said we have a "Lightning Strike." I didn't know what he meant until he said we have an alert. Since I was on Oahu, I knew something bad had happened, and it was going to involve us.
magandang gawain! you have earned a sub.
Remembered that after bonifacio day early December 1989 coup begin it's almost a week long coup. Tora-tora flying, bombing. Marines vs scout rangers in Makati fight each other.
My father was a kid at this time. He told me he could hear and see the planes from our house.
My grandfather was in the side of the coup d'etat he said he never wants to hurt another Filipino, therefore he was terrified if it would come to the point he would have to kill someone.
Consider this was in 1989, occuring just before the 48 anniversary of the Japanese invasion of the Philippines. Filipinos at that time, including veterans of WWII that were still alive, were probably asking themselves: " Filipinos shooting other Filipinos shooting each other near Christmas, what kind of foolishness is this? The more since the 21st century is in 11 years."
My Grampa is a police he told me a story of how he survive a devastating coup in malacañang he also said that he was dragging a injured soldier out of the area for a medical attention I don't know the others cause it's the only information I heard from my grampa
This feels so surreal.
The music is not appropriate to the real event that happened when many of us took to the streets to get rid of his father who doesn't want to step-down after 20 years in power. Imagine born when he was elected, 20 yrs later got rid of him in our youth life. We are still here!

Just rewatched this and noticed the PAL 742 at 0:45. Judging from the JT9Ds, could that be EI-BTS or EI-BZA?
honestly, i'm not sure, if i remember correctly though, the PAF General stationed at Mactan Airport/Base threatened to blow up the plane if it took off, maybe that info could help you lol
@@CobraOneTwelve Damn! They were so close to pulling off a BA 149 right there. Thank God they never blew it up.
I read an LA Times article on this and found out it was 1 of 2 PAL 742s diverted to Mactan. The government feared that the rebels might use them to transport troops to Manila. Couldn't find any info the reg, but it's possible the one in the vid an ex-SAS plane.
My dad at that time was a cadet OPC at that time their camp in tanay,Rizal was almost led by a Rebel officer luckily when they traveled to manila in the outskirts of the city they where stop by the government forces they arrested all the rebel collaborating officers that time and send back all personel back at camp, my dad was Class of 89 officers preparatory course
In his Military career he experienced 2 of the 3 coup de etat here in the Philippines which the last one was the Oak wood mutiny which his company was the on that crashed the tank at the Oak wood hotel❤

The Philippine military, enjoying power under Marcos, when a democratic government was established, had a withdrawal symptom. They were addicted to power and sensing Marcos' weakness wanted more power, led by Honasan and RAM, with Enrile behind perhaps pulling the strings.
Wrong story bro!
what was the reasong behind all those coupdetat? and what was your opinion on cory asking the US to kill filipino soldiers
@KKK Revolution and disrespecting the last visit of FEMs to his mother's grave
Sold to the americans ,we had been at that time their colony
To bring the marcoses back into power FEM in 1986 and 87 but failed, 1989 with imelda because FEM is dead when the december coup happened and also failed
@KKK Revolution yep your right
The coup has nothing to do with Marcos to begin with, it's because of Cory and the military's opposing views on handling the Communist insurgency.
Dito kasama yung uncle ko na scout ranger kung saan pinasok nila yung pinaka malaking bangko ng pilipinas
Past event already and provided hard lessons for the military, which have been learned. The Marines have developed a motto of "NEVER AGAIN". What is the point in showing that sad and unfortunate episode in our history. There are still quarters who call for coup d'etat and withdrawal of support from the duly elected President and bloggers have been falsely stating that PMA generals are in conflict with the President. These events tend to confuse the Filipino people and tend to breed disunity and partisanship which will result in the weakening of the country to defend herself against non-respecter of international norms and laws and thus easily accomplish their aims/goals of dominating our beloved Philippines and the seas around her. Nonetheless, the AFP and other armed forces in the country has remained steadfast in its avowed devotion to its mandate and avowal of support and defense of the Constitution and the duly constituted authorities and the Filipino people. Be FREE than sorry.
It's too bad a lot of the rebel soldiers in the Visayas and Mindanao were not able to reach Manila. I remember watching the local news in Cebu of rebel soldiers disembarking from civilian ro-ros coming from Mindanao. They were stranded in Cebu since the PAF commander of Mactan Air Base sided with the Aquino government. Would've been a different story if they all reached Manila.
Where did you find the footage?

Then when the Americans left their bases, the situation just worsened as China started building military facilities and artificial islands as well as harassing our fishermen. To be frank, China took advantage of the power vacuum created by the U.S. withdrawal in Clark and Subic in the 1990s (because of the Pinatubo eruption and the so-called "historic" senate vote on the rejection of bases extension).

Cory freed rebel leaders like NPA, kaya it angered the military
Puro loyalista pa yung commander nung panahon na yan, kaya nung pinilit nila cory na ibalik sa civilian rule ang AFP at PC nagkaka coup, 2 din sa coup na yan attempts nila marcos na makabalik sa puwesto
Then cory need help from the us marine
Because it was supposed to be a power-sharing between the opposition led by Cory and the military led by Enrile and Honasan (had they not done the coup back in 1986, People Power would never happen and Cory would never be in power), brokered and arranged by the US to replace Marcos.
Cory would spread democracy while the military would continue fighting the Communists.
Of course, Aquino broke the balance when she freed Joma and that angered the military.
Cold war has it too
