Hey guys. Check out the NEW Merch: www.longshotstore.com/ Join me on Discord: discord.gg/drNE6bT In this Eagle Dynamics: Digital Combat Simulator video im flying the A4 Skyhawk against an AV-8B Harrier in a dogfight with some Fox 2 Missiles. Its a slow fight and was a hard one for me. Hope you guys enjoy!
How about trying a Mirage vs a Harrier? (I believe you would have to fly with a M2000, but since the Harrier is an AV-8B, we could pretend they are a “Sea Harrier” vs a “Mirage III”? ;). Great channel…!
Argentine A4 pilots were trained to use them as attack jets, NOT fighters, and most of them were killed by Harriers using AIM-9Ms fresh off the assembly line in the US, able to hit from the side employing high-aspect launches. Never did understand the unmitigated arrogance of the Brits insisting something on the other side of the World was a British land. How about Argentina invade the Isle of Man, claiming it for Argentina? Same level of arrogance and stupidity. Worked for Lloyds Bank in LA, CA during that war. We took all the signs off the building hoping to avoid any reprisals or attacks. Silly. They had these things back then called "Phone Books" with things called "Yellow Pages" at the back of the book that had everybody's address on them. SMH
@@roijoi6963 I have some sympathy with that view. But I think the wishes of the people who lived there have to be taken into account. Maybe a fairer comparison would be if Japan reinvaded the Marianas?

I would have bet the farm that Scooter had this in the bag. You weren't kidding, it looked difficult and the slowness of the fight made it hard for me at least to judge, when should you fire those guns. Sorry, but when you ran out of ammo in the second round, I had a chuckle, Scooter does not carry a whole lot for those guns. I really enjoyed how you described the feel of the cockpit, it is these bits of detail in your narration that make you one of the best at it. Like so many jets of this era, if you used modern engines they would still be excellent platforms. The designs were excellent. The engines were pretty crap by modern standards. Stick an F-414 with 13k/22k thrust in a Skyhawk, stretch the fuselage by 3ft to accommodate the longer engine, and you have a much more capable aircraft that weighs ~ the same amount.
@@roijoi6963 I have always liked the Skyhawk, but when I think of jets dog fighting, my mind speeds up. It's like watching the dog fight in super slow motion. I think the platform for the era it was designed in, is pretty solid and it did its job very well. A Super Skyhawk, like you described, I would enjoy seeing. Cheers.
Round 1 reminded me of Argentina vs. U.K. during the Falklands War in the early 1980's. We emergency shipped them (Royal Navy Sea Harriers) AIM-9M's to get one over on the opposition A-4s with IFIRC their AIM-9P's. The results were definitely one sided in that conflict. Round 2 was epic flying by Longshot, truly amazing airmanship and shows how the pilot is always more important than the jet/weapon system. Hearing that old school growling sidewinder tone, looking for the IR radiation from the bandit was nice, then when it shrieked with a high pitch from your AIM-9P : "I see him, let me off the chain Longshot! Let's Go, Go, Go!" I had to smile for you. It was a sweet, sweet missile shot! 👍
The software for the Harriers to be able to use the AIM-9Ls (corrected from -9M, not available at the time) was sent via satellite on a 150 baud modem while the flotilla was enroute. It took ~ 24hrs IIRC. That software was a crash project done around the clock for ~ 10 days. As a budding software enginee at the time I could relate, and guessed that code might have been pretty buggey, or not. Sometimes, for a short period of time you can pull a miracle out of your sphincter. UK Harrier pilots flew with HP Calculators strapped to their thighs as a bare-bones avionics system. Talk about winging it! Those pilots had about ZERO chance to test the software before flying into combat. The pucker factor must have been really high the first few engagements!
@@roijoi6963 Thanks for the insight from your experience/research, it was an interesting read. Those HP calculators must have been like a smart phone today in price, 1982 was closer to WWII at the time than that year is to us today!

The HMS Invincible came to New Zealand after the Falklands War. We gave them a good old kiwi welcome and sent out a group of A-4K skyhawks and did an air raid on the carrier. They didn't pick us up on radar or have time to scramble the Sea Harriers. It all comes down to the right equipment and training. A Sea Harrier stayed on shore for a week and did air combat training with our Skyhawks, we got kills on the Sea Harrier. Nothing but respect to those Argentine pilots, they had basically 5 minutes over the battlefield then they had to run for home or end up in the ocean. Dog fighting was completely out of the question even if they had the right tools to do it.

Considering the A4 first flu in 1954, it’s a pretty damn good attack aircraft 25+ years later. Earl Heinemann designed it working for Douglas. Pilots called it Heinemann’s hotrod!
Nice work Longshot. Yeah the Harrier is a challenging opponent for the Skyhawk, but it can win as you've shown. People always talk about viffing as in slowing the plane down, even to a standstill, but from an article I read a long time ago they didn't really do that so much as use the nozzle position to tighten turns when maneuvering. It was thought to be possible in both jockeying before the fight and during. Whether this was ever actually done, I don't know.
The Harriers did try it in New Zealand against our Skyhawks after the Falklands war and it didn't turn out well for the Sea Harriers. Our pilots had better training and equipment not to mention.

The A-4 is a rock star. I remember when they were evaluating the Sea Harrier against the F-15, this British pilot call sign "Shaky" splashed two F-15s with sidewinders one after the other, the two F-15s tried to out run him but it was too late.
Well, the Argentinians never had fuel enough for any dogfight so I don't think it was a realistic scenario. They would hit and fly away hoping to make it to the continent.

Is it really necessary to get your enemy in the crosshairs to pull the trigger? If radar catch the opponent the missile will lock on and follow. It isnt a rifle aiming at the deer.
Strange one, trying to circle a harrier to get on his tail. He cruises round where he is and watches you. Scarcely needs to move. Unless he wants to ram you with his refuelling probe.
Not sure what utility he thought the viffing had for him. You couldn't close enough to actually get accurate gun shots without a radar gun sight and your fox 2's were ineffective. He should have just extended and waited for you to run out of ammo. Then turn around and either get you or run you out of fuel.
@@LongShotChannel Full throttle, flaps down! I don't fly but through you, and you know who! I pay attention to you two, and noticed one did, that could help you! Love the flying! Mahalo
And after the HMS Invincible came to New Zealand after the Falklands, our A-4s ate them for breakfast. The Argentine pilots didn't have fuel to fight the Sea Harriers, all those British pilots did was kill guys flying home.

So, after reading the comments I conclude Argentina would of won in '82 if they had Longshot flying and 13mins over the falklands not 5min.
The thing about being hit by a fox two in a harrier is instead of it hitting you in the back it's going to hit you dead center.
Most of the A4 ejection seats in the Malvinas were not working. =(
I read Long Shot, as Sharp Shooter! 👍
There Is no model of the Mirage 3 un dcs? That Is the true dogfight of the Malvinas war
A-4 roll rate is 720°/second in rl.
Strange one, trying to circle a harrier to get on his tail. He cruises round where he is and watches you.
Scarcely needs to move. Unless he wants to ram you with his refuelling probe.
Is there no Brit harrier in the game?
Not sure what utility he thought the viffing had for him. You couldn't close enough to actually get accurate gun shots without a radar gun sight and your fox 2's were ineffective. He should have just extended and waited for you to run out of ammo. Then turn around and either get you or run you out of fuel.
Was your flaps down!?
Nope
@@LongShotChannel Full throttle, flaps down! I don't fly but through you, and you know who! I pay attention to you two, and noticed one did, that could help you! Love the flying! Mahalo
Love Skyhawk
Can the A4 do the Cobra? Lmao
Do you use TrackIR?
Yes
The Harrier pilot wasn't great. The RN Sea Harriers ate A4's for breakfast in '82
because the A-4s were returning from bombing runs, low on fuel, with no radar, rwr, missiles or flares, they didn't engage the Harriers in ACM
And after the HMS Invincible came to New Zealand after the Falklands, our A-4s ate them for breakfast. The Argentine pilots didn't have fuel to fight the Sea Harriers, all those British pilots did was kill guys flying home.
Why didn't you shoot him, I thought you said that thing was fast.
The Sea Harrier was about 120knots faster.
Speed makes no difference if you are a good pilot. A Sea Harrier pilot got 7 kills in mock dogfights against F-15s in europe and lost only once.
@@EndTimeDreams Speed is life. I once saw, on radar, 2 F104S-ASA-M of the Italian AF make mince meat out of 4 RN SHAR2's by using their speed. SPEED IS LIFE.
👍🏼🤟🏼
First
Nobody cares
Lol
We care, Joshua. We just... You know, can't give you the satisfaction of showing it. ;P
Congratulations Josh

The Argentine A4s didn't do so good against the Harriers.

They never had dog fights with them. 5 minutes over the battlefield tops then bingo fuel, time to go home or run out of gas
