Fun fact: Before Beta 1.8, Diamond Armor had the same strength as iron armor. The only difference was the durability. This made having diamond armor an even huger flex than it is today.
9:07 The reason why sheep spawned underground and why your house was suddenly full of sheep and pigs in the earliest versions is because high light levels used to be a catalyst for spawning passive mobs, countering hostile mobs spawning in the dark. At some point this was changed so they would only spawn on grass, meaning they'd stop spawning inside caves and houses (unless there was grass blocks in your house). There used to be methods for making passive mob farms using only grass and torches and water. I remember being mad when this was changed so that mobs simply spawned naturally in the world and wouldn't come back if killed, because although the Minecraft world is functionally infinite, it made it so that passive mobs were now technically finite; if all were killed, there would be no getting them back. I was also, like, 12 years old or something, so. IIRC, there were obviously way more involved structures, but the most basic 24/7 passive mob generator you could make was a pillar in the center with torches on all four sides, then surrounded by a square ring of fences, which were surrounded by stairs. Built on top of grass. The mobs would spawn inside the controlled fenced area and you could walk up the stairs and over the fence to kill them.
"I remember being mad when this was changed so that mobs simply spawned naturally in the world and wouldn't come back if killed, because although the Minecraft world is functionally infinite, it made it so that passive mobs were now technically finite; if all were killed, there would be no getting them back." This is inaccurate. In reality, they simply reduced the mob cap for passive animals significantly, and new animals can only spawn if there aren't any animals in the area. Animals now don't despawn, and many are in loaded chunks that fill the passive spawn cap. Killing all animals in a particular area, they will eventually respawn at a much slower rate. This is evidenced in skyblock playthroughs. If you add a large area of grass blocks, new animals will spontaneously spawn.
I've been playing in my survival world since infdev. At first I was disappointed by the fact that my world didn't have any new caves under the old chunks, but, now I kind of appreciate it, as it makes it was easier to build underground because you don't have to clear away any stone. Also, really fun video! Its always cool seeing how players who haven't played quite as long react to how much emptier and less convenient the old versions feel compared to the newer ones :)

The reason the nether portal didn't work on Day 12 is that there were two obsidian in front of it. In early versions that confuses the game, so you can't light it. That's why the portal building strat is a bit different in early versions. Instead of placing one block in a 4 long strip of lava, you place one and then make an L shape in front of it, so no obsidian forms there.

@@sock_with_sass09 I mostly play older versions of the game and make mods for them so surely I'm gonna know a thing or two. Sb7 your a legend at minecraft hardcore mode! I'm honestly impressed by the time and effort you put into these videos, Keep it up. I also work very hard on my 100 days videos!
Fun fact: the reason the old trees turned into jungle trees is because of a quirk in how leaf decay used to work In Alpha, notch (the creator of Minecraft) kept trying to add leaf decay, and the way the system worked is that leaves would have different metadata values depending on how close to the tree they generated. So if it was close to a tre it would have data value 1, or further it would have value 3. These days values would later be used when spruce, Burch, and jungnle leaves were added, meaning that old alpha trees would turn into mixed trees.
We can see how long this video has been in the making because SB has such little knowledge about 1.18 in comparison to his 100 days hardcore series. Thats a lot of dedication SB well done!

I think I started playing minecraft during 1.7 or 1.8 Very cool to see how things have changed! :D Really appreciate you mentioning what is added in each update Edit: Made my account in December 2014, so 1.8
As a newer player, for me the difference between older and more "modern" Minecraft versions is the texture update. I started playing Java in 1.16, but have watched Minecraft since around 1.13.
I started a channel long time ago... I put a lot of effort into my videos but never see much success :((( Anyways, nice video! I’ve been watching you for a very long time and your videos make me happier! :)))
I guess it depends on when you started playing/watching it. For me it was the update that made the grass not bright green in alpha that really made it seem like the current game for me, (even though i didn't play the game back then). After that it is 1.9 changing combat (which i was around for). Then 1.13 onwards all keep adding to it. Those are like the "checkpoints" for me in the progression of the game, and then 1.13 onwards is when they started making most updates big and add lots of new stuff so they all stand out.
I remember the 1.12 update, the addition of different colored beds. I was so happy about the update. Those were the good old days :) And I didn't even know when the phantom was added. When he said it was in 1.13, I was surprised, I didn't know it was that old And the update when glass was changed(1.14), it was so good because the glass textures before, I gotta say, were horrible
Bro yes the old glass is trash but I remember my house inside a hill with windows looking outside in stress because it was turning nighttime around the first time I played so the old texture is so so nostalgic
I think the first time I ever played minecraft was in 1.14, it's nice to remember the first time I looked at the menu and to see how much the game has evolved since then.
yeah same i joined at version 1.14.4 but i played tu16 as my first official version of the game before i played realmcraft and it was not a good rip off
I have no idea how SB 737 can do it. I’ve tried redoing his challenges in hard-core, and I always end up punching my computer and I don’t know he’s just absolutely a legend at these challenges.

You should avoid exploring before 1.14 as if you leave, new chunks will load and stay in the older version FOREVER meaning that if you stay in one spot, you will get benefits later on
I’m really liking the longer vid format, it gives more content and shows more of the hard work sb does, while wasting less footage making 1 - 2hr vids, rather than 30 - 1hr vids wasting more footage and content
This was such a great idea. Now I wanna try it. I was wondering though, could you please release a world download? Thanks! Love your videos, can't wait to see what's next! Love ya, man! (also the allay also spawns in pillager outposts lol)
Haha nice patience there making and editing this whole video. Props for the effort!! This took me back to the time when I first played Minecraft around 2012 with the 1.3 or 1.4 version I think. I remember that when the 1.5 update came I felt like everything was so different and it was hard to get used to it, little did I know that more than 10 years after we would get a whole new concept of Minecraft with these last updates… This video was very nostalgic and I really like all the effort you put into your world! I hope you continue this series someday with the next updates!

I also remembered that version 1.11.2 used to be the latest version and the 1.12 snapshots were when I discovered colored beds for the first time, and the recipe book too!
I started around beta 1.3, still remember my first world and house. When snow and rain came out, It made my forest such a vibe with all the sound and warmth of the torches in my wooden treehouse. The biggest forest biome I’ve ever seen was that world. Lost it long ago..

30:28 the XP is still counted in the player data, but the game didn't quite know how to display that yet. it did learn in 1.0.0 though.
39:55 back in alpha the game used metadata ids to store data about leaf decay, these ids were later reused in Beta 1.2 for birch and spruce leaves, but those existing blocks when converted into 1.2 will also contain jungle leaves because the game doesn't remove those unobtainable leaf ids.
Underrated comment

damn this guy knows his stuff he should be a youtuber
@@sock_with_sass09 I mostly play older versions of the game and make mods for them so surely I'm gonna know a thing or two. Not to advertise or anything, but I do make the occasional video on old Minecraft, not exactly often these days though.
I guess this is what experimenting with old versions for a good 6 years does to you lol.
Only SB can make me watch 2 hours of just Minecraft gameplay

Damn the nostalgia is unreal. I completely forgot how dark the game used to be! Also how cool (and scuffed) would this be as an SMP!
Oh yah!!! But instead of day like every 7 and after the whatever the current is it goes back to the first.
Random update every day? 🤔
Having some way to save your important items would be good though haha
There's a series that some of the hermit s made, led by grian
The EVO SMP exists, its well over now.
Would love to see another group of people take a shot at it, though!
I really enjoyed this video! I love older versions.
You definitely should make something like 100 days in alpha/beta/some of older releases.
I enjoyed the squidventure but yeah, its so nostalgiac
I'd love to see 100 days in Alpha 1.0
Can confirm. The stairs 100% have a mind of their own

10/10 video
Whenever I see beta and alpha versions, all I can think about is Will and Sophie. They were the content creators that I would watch in my early childhood and I’ll never forget them.
My childhood creators was sb,big b, Preston. 2 turned into toddler entertainers. And sb changed his content to fit in modern mc. I really miss hide and seek, murder mystery, sbs Sundays and most importantly sbs awesome world
I started a channel long time ago... I put a lot of effort into my videos but never see much success :((( Anyways, nice video! I’ve been watching you for a very long time and your videos make me happier! :)))

I'm surprisingly used to the old texture of the totem of undying and I forgot that they actually changed it's textures... this was a nice nostalgic video and I feel old because the observers felt like it was added yesterday but it was added 1.10! I'm a proud veteran of minecraft
Sb7 your a legend at minecraft hardcore mode! I'm honestly impressed by the time and effort you put into these videos, Keep it up. I also work very hard on my 100 days videos!
Fun fact: the reason the old trees turned into jungle trees is because of a quirk in how leaf decay used to work
In Alpha, notch (the creator of Minecraft) kept trying to add leaf decay, and the way the system worked is that leaves would have different metadata values depending on how close to the tree they generated. So if it was close to a tre it would have data value 1, or further it would have value 3.
These days values would later be used when spruce, Burch, and jungnle leaves were added, meaning that old alpha trees would turn into mixed trees.
31:30 This reminds me of Tobuscus’s old Minecraft world. His house was on the water, but eventually everything around him became snowy and frozen
We can see how long this video has been in the making because SB has such little knowledge about 1.18 in comparison to his 100 days hardcore series. Thats a lot of dedication SB well done!

As somebody who's played Minecraft for 10 years now- This is the most nostalgia I've felt in a long time, and this video honestly made me really sad yet happy. Glad to see the old versions again❤
Btw, mushrooms were the only stackable food back in the day meaning with 1 inventory slot you could regenerate hundreds of hearts in seconds.
late reply but that's for early survival test versions only, you can't eat raw mushrooms now
But did u have hundreds of hearts to regenerate?
I just got the notification and click on it without thinking before. I always wait your new videos ! You are the best youtuber of all time !
Fun fact: I start playing Minecraft in 2012 when I was 6 at the 1.4 version (sorry for the orthograph I'm french)
I've only started playing minecraft since 1.13, and It changed a lot, like omg. Seeing how much It went through since indev puts a smile on my face and so much nostalgia😭😭😢 , like minecraft really went through so much in 12 years and a great video to summarise it all in 2 hours.💙
I think I started playing minecraft during 1.7 or 1.8
Very cool to see how things have changed! :D Really appreciate you mentioning what is added in each update
Edit: Made my account in December 2014, so 1.8
i started in 1.13 (im still not that old in the game i think i first played in 1.12 but i only remember 1.13)
i don't know what 1.x version i started playing on, but I started on ps3 either TU12 or TU13
I love how you say what each version adds at the beginning of each day. And i love seeing the world evolve as you prgress through each version
This was useful for catching up with the new stuff for me since i've not played this game for like a few years!
Thank you for this trip to the past, this brings back so many memories of my 2 best friends and I back in 2012 playing for hours and hours together❤️
I will comment
20:40 "I'm gonna bring back some snow as a souvenir"

As a newer player, for me the difference between older and more "modern" Minecraft versions is the texture update. I started playing Java in 1.16, but have watched Minecraft since around 1.13.
Your picture is MORTIS!!!
its 1.13 for me, i feel like it started changing minecraft
I started a channel long time ago... I put a lot of effort into my videos but never see much success :((( Anyways, nice video! I’ve been watching you for a very long time and your videos make me happier! :)))
I guess it depends on when you started playing/watching it. For me it was the update that made the grass not bright green in alpha that really made it seem like the current game for me, (even though i didn't play the game back then). After that it is 1.9 changing combat (which i was around for). Then 1.13 onwards all keep adding to it. Those are like the "checkpoints" for me in the progression of the game, and then 1.13 onwards is when they started making most updates big and add lots of new stuff so they all stand out.
i started in 1.15 lol
:D
Loving the long videos SB, it’s more entertaining than shorter videos. Keep it up

I remember the 1.12 update, the addition of different colored beds. I was so happy about the update. Those were the good old days :)
And I didn't even know when the phantom was added. When he said it was in 1.13, I was surprised, I didn't know it was that old
And the update when glass was changed(1.14), it was so good because the glass textures before, I gotta say, were horrible
I got confused too but mainly because I never realized how old the elytra is. For reference I started playing in 1.6
Bro yes the old glass is trash but I remember my house inside a hill with windows looking outside in stress because it was turning nighttime around the first time I played so the old texture is so so nostalgic
I think the first time I ever played minecraft was in 1.14, it's nice to remember the first time I looked at the menu and to see how much the game has evolved since then.
Ye I get that I joined in 1.9
yeah same i joined at version 1.14.4 but i played tu16 as my first official version of the game before i played realmcraft and it was not a good rip off
ME 1.13.1
xbox 360 in like 2012, played pe for a while, then java from like 1.12 or 13 to present, so im technically an og player ig?

The thing that brought back the most nostalgia for me was the old taking damage sound…that ‘oof’ will never get old.

1:45:04 every time he fell into the void I gasped so hard thinking he would die and forgetting he had a elytra 😂
I’m really liking the longer vid format, it gives more content and shows more of the hard work sb does, while wasting less footage making 1 - 2hr vids, rather than 30 - 1hr vids wasting more footage and content
Yeah, but who has 2 hours to watch one UA-cam video

It's amazing how the game has changed over the years!
Thx for this trip down memory lane, I been playing since like 2012. So greatly appreciated
The coolest thing is that SB's 100 days in vanilla hardcore only lasted 20 minutes and now the videos are 1-2 hours

I remember that when the 1.5 update came I felt like everything was so different and it was hard to get used to it, little did I know that more than 10 years after we would get a whole new concept of Minecraft with these last updates…
This video was very nostalgic and I really like all the effort you put into your world! I hope you continue this series someday with the next updates!
I’m doing something similar but rather than updating every day I’m going through each version from infdev on. Been a blast so far
So you would only play Indev and not updating or do you update your server at a different interval?
@@GhostlyFyre sorry i wasnt clear, woops, i play infdev for some time, until ive collected and/or used all of the features then ill move to alpha and do the same and so on :)
