The fast tempo certainly makes the performance very exciting but tough on the singers. Three great amazing singers at a level we may never hear again. R.I.P.

Mac Neil and Tucker , two of the greatest American opera singers at the time, Tucker as age 55 and still one of the greatest, Mac Neil after Warren died in 1960 was the next big voiced Baritone

My favorite aspect of this performance is the courage of Levine to create an unrelenting frenzy and every single vocal note is nailed.

He sure did but where was it, Michigan, or was it Ohio? Do you have it complete, the entire performance ? He really cracked the whip on these singers!!!!! worked them hard. Good sound for live back then.

He had perhaps the biggest Baritone voice of them all, besides Warren Mac Neil could shake the roof and together with Big voiced Tucker as Canio, I saw them both in Pagliacci at the Met. a few years after this, it was in 1973, they shook the rafters.

Is the Cond. taking it that fast? Seems a bit fast, unless tape speed is off, but they seem on pitch? I don't have the score.

      @@shicoff1398 Yes, it’s too fast.

@@BaroneVitellioScarpia1 Does that make it harder on the singers in this case or easier?

The tempo for the final stretta is ridiculously fast, for no earthly reason. Give the baritone a chance to BREATHE, will you??

Not just the Baritone but also Tenor Tucker and Tucci the Soprano, they, the singers here are all dead now, but we have this and other live singing to always remember them. RIP.
