I'm glad that movie tie-in games are *almost* dying out. I think mobile is a really good platform for them, because the "bar" for mobile games is a lot lower than consoles. Casual games are best for the movies, but ate kind of stupid to play on your gaming PC or XBOX.
For some reason, at 5:46 I was expecting peanutbuttergamer's voice to pop up and say "entertainmeeeeeent" or something like that. I really don't know why.
While I'm glad that shitty tie in games are going mobile instead of console or even pc, i would really rather good quality tie in games for the consoles or pc. I cannot explain to you the potential of a quality how to train your dragon tie in. Make it like skyrim where you've got to explore on your dragon. or GotG. A mass effect quality Guardians game would be equally awesome.
Interesting as always, Dylan. I love your videos. I'm glad that movie tie in games are going out of fashion, but I did buy the Planet of the Apes tie in for Plague Inc. It was pretty fun.
+Dylan Dubeau awesome stuff man, I just binge-watch a couple of your episode, love the end of your video here, the comment response thingy, you should do it more, also sam from this exist used to do it, but he stopped cause it took him too much time, please continue being awesome and hope you get back to doing comment responses in the future. Also you earned yourself a new subscriber, stay awesome :D
I actually though "Edge of Tomorrow" would of made a perfect game, and it did, but it was only on mobile which sucked, and "The Avengers" first person game that was cancelled looked amazing, so I wish AAA movie ties in were still a thing because sometimes you get gems, and it allows you to spend more time in the universe you love.
I'm kind of sad to see them go. Some of my favorite games are those occasional gems that would rise up from the filth that is tie-in games. Even some of those broken ass games with that one game mechanic that makes everything magic hold a special place in my heart. Oh well, at least this will put an end to that inevitable sequel that can never live up to the hype, because the next movie in the franchise was the next year.
On the definition of what video games are I think Jim Sterling's is the best. It's given in his "It's Not A Video Game!" episode of Jimquisition. I would still love to see an episode on your definition though
what do you mean technically no screen? the thing the image is projected on or through is the screen, so in Google glass the prism is the screen in the Holo room it would be the walls
Now that you mention it, yeah I am glad that they're going towards mobile. When I was a kid I wasted too much money on games that were movie tie-ins, simply because I did not know any better. Whereas if it's on mobile there is most likely a free/facebook version. Meaning that I as the consumer would not have to spend as much money.
I think there will always be movie tie-in games on the market. However, if there's an area where I think that there's a possible repeat of the video game crash, it's in the mobile market. Looking at the terrible games that get released and the focus on the very small percentage of players, dubbed "whales" by the marketing teams, it has the highest chance for failure in the future as it tries to compete for the same fickle audience. While some casual gamers may move into the hardcore category, others will quickly move on to the next thing. On the console side, the closest analogy is Nintendo's Wii, which had amazing sales figures, but the game attachment ratios were atrocious and deterred 3rd party companies from supporting it. This has continued to be a daunting challenge for Nintendo to overcome with the Wii U.
Wait... did you dis toy story 3 for the xbox 360? You can only do that if u don't like disney infinity, because disney infinity was based on toy story 3
I think that is also because games now have better storylines than actual movies. I think a game would take just the right amount of time to tell a story, but a movie telling the same story would feel rushed. Games may be the future of visual and auditory storytelling.
I could see a decent survival game being made of the Games or Quarter Quell. I could see it being made into an RPG. I can see it being a story driven platformer. I can see the war with the Capitol making a nice shooter. Instead we get a casual game that would kindly like you to pay a dollar every 2 minutes (not exaggerating) to refill your health bar. Or alternatively watch the same anti-smoking commercials over & over again to refill it for free. There are casual games like Pokemon Shuffle & Pokemon Rumble World that let you play for a solid half hour before running out of energy.
I would prefer the quality of movie tie in games improve rather than die off. In fact dying off is itself a bad thing because it takes with it the occasional good movie tie in game. I can chose not to play a bad game. It is a lot harder to choose to play a good game that never got made because movie tie in games died off.
Personally, I cringed at some of the references in that game and some of the dialogue was less than original (not to mention Talion sounds way to similar to Thor for my comfort), but overall I enjoy the gameplay, cutscenes, and storyline, although the gameplay very often frustrates me.
I'm kinda glad tbh. Movie games tend to be rushed out and forced to the point of being laughably broken and uninspired. I'd much rather have a Guardians of the Galaxy(for example) game in the future not based on the film that's not terrible then to have one rushed out that's terrible and ruins the series like Harry Potter(for example). Now there's almost no chance of an actual, good Harry Potter game.
What exactly classifies a movie tie-in game? There have been a ton of Star Wars games that are awesome like TFU and Battlefront, while on the other hand, Star Wars Episode III: The Video Game wasn't all that great. (I have theat game on my old PS2 and I did enjoy it but it's not nearly as good as the games that aren't trying to follow the exact storyof a specific movie. Spiderman The Movie: The Video Game was actually pretty awesome, but other than that, I can't think of any other good ones. I don't think it makes sense to say that Hunger Games killed the movie tie-in games though.
Not all movie games were bad. I remember Godzilla destroy all monsters was an awesome game. In fact Godzilla had quite a few good games (there were some terrible ones though).
I think it has more to do with rising technology than the company turning a new leaf as everyone will want money as quickly as possible and with the whole resolution and graphics wars it will get harder were as before slap a thing together and out the door because it was doable and I recommend you try to look for extra credits video on shovel ware
Damn right, that's what made Telltale's The Walking Dead so great. I know that's not a movie tie in game but it is a series tie in game, and there are a lot of those as well.
In a way you are not wrong, movie games/games based off movie do seem to do badly most time whether it is development times and publisher getting in the way of the creative minds or just bad things hitting the fan, but you over looked games like batman arkham asylum and the more newer game alien isolation , which is less of a cash grab and more like a game in that universe which is more appealing to gamers to explore that world beyond the movies, spiderman 2 the game was a good way to explore new York though Spiderman's eyes and over all it was a good game for it's mechanics. I have ranted enough but overall movie tie in game maybe dead but exploring movie content is not! :)
Shovelware, shovelware, yayyyyy shovelware! :P Unfortunately, there's an audience on mobile for shovelware. Non-gamers (or at least people who find being called a "gamer" offensive somehow and don't consider the games they play actual games).
The Harry Potter games are good. well ive only played the first two, for the gameboy, and the first two for console. and i like them, i dont see them as bad games. At the very least they are decent.
If video games "must use electricity" to count as video games, then wouldn't Operation be a video game? Same that one monopoly game with electronic credits cards, simon, and even just rapidly turning your light switch on and off to annoy your brother or me typing this comment in UA-cam.
Yes, that one. Where if you accidentally touch the edge it makes a loud buzzing sound. I just also realized that that buzzing sound is probably the patient dying. Wow, some video games are evil.
Woah, woah did you ]ust call the frozen game a guardians of a galaxy rip off, seriously? so many rip offs and shitty games that nobody remembers the true beginnings in be]ewelled
Love the perfectly timed witty humor. Like the perfectly timed fail and the cat falling, or leaves you disappointed like your tinder dates.
The Star Wars Battlefront and Knights of the Old Republic series were awesome. Plus, LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth II was great too.
I'm glad that movie tie-in games are *almost* dying out. I think mobile is a really good platform for them, because the "bar" for mobile games is a lot lower than consoles. Casual games are best for the movies, but ate kind of stupid to play on your gaming PC or XBOX.

The new Alien game and Middle:Earth:Shadow of Mordor... the tie in is going nowhere
For some reason, at 5:46 I was expecting peanutbuttergamer's voice to pop up and say "entertainmeeeeeent" or something like that. I really don't know why.
Extra Credits - Shovelware - The Causes and Consequences of Bad Licensed Games
I feel like this is a very relevant video to share here.

I 100% agree with you about destiny... What a wasted opportunity by bungie

the Hunger games could make a very good multi-player Battle-royal game.

"Hardcore gamers only like GOOD games."
Unless you're Birgirpall, Vinesauce, or high. (Depending on your definition of Hardcore, of course).
Now that you mention it, yeah I am glad that they're going towards mobile. When I was a kid I wasted too much money on games that were movie tie-ins, simply because I did not know any better. I think you didn't mention the spongebob movie game for the gamecube / ps2 / Xbox
Do u even Battlefront?
You completely forgot about the prosperous battlefront

There was a few good Star Wars games like battlefront Knights of the old Republic and shadows of the empire, I also didn't mind the force unleashed
You have an awesome personality, you should run a Let's Play channel.
Shadow of Mordor has been amazing.
Great video. It's pronounced "T 'eye' 51" by the way in reference to the calculator.
Shadow of Mordor
I think that is also because games now have better storylines than actual movies. I think a game would take just the right amount of time to tell a story, but a movie telling the same story would feel rushed. Games may be the future of visual and auditory storytelling.
Pitch black was the only good thing to have anything to do with riddick... but ive never played any of the games though.
Yes. Yes you should sub everything in swedish and latvian at the same time. That would be awesome.
I could see a decent survival game being made of the Games or Quarter Quell. I could see it being made into an RPG. I can see it being a story driven platformer. What about the new game for The Lord of the Rings theme The Shadow of Mordor? Isn't it a good game?

I've never been interested in games based off movies.
Expendabros was pretty good. That was a movie tie-in.

Someone really should make a movie tie-in video game of A Serbian Film.

The best movie tie in games are usually the ones that have nothing to do with the plot of the movie
Damn right, that's what made Telltale's The Walking Dead so great. I know that's not a movie tie in game but it is a series tie in game, and there are a lot of those as well.
great vid.... !!!!!!
you forgot some games, like star wars battlefront.

You should make a video about Half Life or Portal.
"Hardcore gaming audience", "Minecraft" - Ummm
“Minecraft”
“Hardcore audience”
Wut
Ummm the Alien was awesome
Maybe video games don't need a definition.
Nice.work
Shovelware, shovelware, yayyyyy shovelware! :P

Kingdom Hearts is a wonderful DISNEY movie he look it up
The Harry Potter games are good. well ive only played the first two, for the gameboy, and the first two for console. and i like them, i dont see them as bad games. At the very least they are decent.
the movie tie in game genre may be dead or is it just HIBERNATING!!!!!! illuminati confirmed
Hello, Dylan, my name is Dylan. (sorry I just couldn't help it) XD

+Lewis Birkett No, he said Candy Crush Saga ripoff. But I see your point.
Aaron Rayner there is no such thing as a candy crush rip off, unless it's literally the same (bejewelled with candy)
First!
Dylan was first.
Mispelled "Gay".
