E-bike riders seem to care...a lot...there's video after video online with people rationalizing their use of an e-bike. Very few non e-bike riders care at all about them but the visceral reactions at the mere suggestion that one might not be getting as much exercise when using an e-bike are everywhere. If you need/want an e-bike then enjoy it and ride it. I'm 57 and I'm sure an e-bike is in my future but I know me, if I had an e-bike right now my fitness level would decline and I don't want that.
@@rustychain9518 if I had an e-bike my fitness would increase, no doubt, as I'd be able to shred on days that I would normally have to take off completely for rest
@@rustychain9518if you’re used to pushing your analog bike hard, you’ll do the same on an e-bike. The advantage is, more miles for a given amount of time, which equals more of the fun stuff going downhill. Miles on the trail develop skill, not time on the trail. But, maybe that’s just me.
Well said, I have the same Rail 2021 and bought it after a 25 year hiatus. I’m so addicted now I can’t think about anything else almost 🤓. It’s a different sport for me now with an eMTB in middle age, sooo many more runs and conserved energy for features and jumps!
DALE! I’m with you dude. Thank you for promoting a non-discriminatory mentality in mountain biking. We need more of this in our community again. I got an e-mtb after many years of racing mountain bikes. Did Leadville and other ultra endurance races in my 20s. Went deep down the fitness rabbit hole once upon a time. Hands down, never have I experienced so much joy on my mountain bike as I do now shuttling DH laps on the eeb. Preach fun and ride whatever the hell you want.
The only people cheating are the people cheating themselves from experiencing something different or people that continue to compare themselves or their equipment with riders they encounter in trails or what is considered "cool" in the mtbing industry. I got an emtb and its quite overpowered and i installed a throttle, but i dont ride my bicycle for fitness. Its for me to hangout with my friends, get stoned and ride some awesome trails. I also notice that people tend to have to explain why they ride an emtb. Should I just put a sticker on my bike saying "Im sorry but I have shrapnel stuck inside my right arm that cant be removed and it has screws and anchors holding it together."? As a beginner rider, you also notice a lot of elitists when it comes to gear and brands. People care too much about what other people use and i think this dilutes peoples ability to be more open-minded and welcoming. I started with a hardtail a few years ago and i treated myself to a full sus emtb. (I think people that ride full sus are cheaters. See how that works?). If you want to get fit, then ride whatever you want, go to the gym. I dont feel like I am cheating, because I am not racing anyone, doing time trials or beating strava records. Im just trying to survive and make it back to the parking spot, after doing multiple laps with my friends. A wise man once said, COMPARISON IS A THIEF OF JOY. Appreciate your videos, and stay safe. KLUNKIN AINT EASY!
I definitely don't view eMTB's as 'cheating' (unless you're using one in a race you're not supposed to...) but since I don't live in a mountainous area with tons of huge climbs I haven't decided to get one for myself yet. I do use mountain biking as a part of my fitness regimen as well since I'm not really interested in going to gyms. We all have our own personal relationships to riding that are all equally valid. Good message.
You’re so right about how mountain biking started and kudos to those guys sending the klunkers to get us where we are today! There are purist mtb snobs that get exposed because of the e-bike debate so I say keep it going! Hay! Also can u please mention the trails and state you’re riding in (you did say PA) as I am retired and travel all around the US riding MTB/emtb? I’m familiar with the area you’re in and can probably dummy it out where you were, always nice to put trails on the bucket list! Thanks!
In the🇬🇧 late 70's my dad took a road bike dumped the rear derailleur & added nobby tyres took the thing to local woods & we went "SCRAMBLING" at the time I had no idea this was early MTB'n but I definitely knew I was having ""FUN""..still having fun in 2024 🤩
I used to think that way. But when i started getting knee pain during one of my epic climb rides, one of my buddies towed me up the mountain on his ebike. While my knee was still recovering, my buddy let me borrow his ebike for the day, and it changed my tune real fast. Not only can i rider further, but it saves my knees, and more importantly I'm having way more fun than before. I still ride with my normal bike friends, we're all out there to have fun. I just now bring a tow rope in case i need to tow a friend 👍
I broke my ankle last year at Rays. To this day I have pain and mobility issues. I’ve had people be incredibly rude to me on my Emtb. Even with my huge ankle brace. The amount of hate is just wild. I just want to be able to ride again.
It depends on why you ride bikes to begin with. I ride for fitness and health, some ride for the fun and freedom, some like to cruise slowly, some ride for sightseeing. Don't matter as long as you get out off your couch and ride any bike. 😊
Exactly why eMTB is great. You can target specific heart rate zones that are better for fitness and training. Maxing out in zone 4 and 5 all the time is not the best way to improve fitness.
I get just as much of a workout on my e-bike as I do on my Amish bike but on those days when I just don't want to bust my lungs on 'that hill,' I'll still go on the ride instead of staying on the couch. it's just cheating life.
Well said. I ride my eMTB to maximize my ride time. I have no delusions how much it helps me do this or about my own fitness. But we are all after the same stoke on the mountain, how I get it shouldn’t matter to anyone else. And if cleaning techy climbs under your power and fitness is part of that stoke for anyone, I have nothing but respect. BTW Dusty, I met you at Killington in the camping area a few weeks ago after the Fox US Open ended.
It’s extremely hot where I am. If I bike on my hard tail I can go for about 15-20 mins and I’m done. On the e-bike I can ride for about an hour and a half and cover (without exaggeration) about 10 times more ground
I've got a trek Rail7, a 2018 GT Sensor alloy comp and a 2015 Voodoo Bizango, all 29ers. They are all fun, my ebike allows me to do as much as I used to - I'm currently 67yrs. Some one who said to me that my ebike is a cheat. I pointed out they few on airplanes, drove to trail heads, etc. Wasn't that cheating, surely they should have walked. Who are we cheating? Mtb is about being out and about and doing your own things. Regards Tony Sadler South Wales UK 🏴
If I had another ebike I’d offer a challenge to anyone to come keep up with me in a ride and at the end tell me they or I didn’t earn it. But as long as your riding that’s all that matters
just wondering where you draw the line on using 'mountain bike trails'. If you have 'fun' on a throttle bike, or even a dirt motorbike why not allow then. Signs to mountain bike and walking trail systems typically indicate no motorized vehicles. E-bikes are motorized. Not hating on ebikes - they are a great invention and I may get one soon as i am 66. Still enjoy the climbs sort of lol.
ebikes are effectively motocross bikes, and on many South Florida Trails, people with poor aerobic and mediocre skills are blasting along trails6 to 10 mph faster than racers or just good riders on real, human powered bikes. What is most wrong about this, is that the motocrossers think they are entitled to make the much slower, human powered bikers pull over and compromise their lap time, as if they motocrossers have a right to the etiquette of slower riders pulling over for faster ones. I've got news...this is not your right, and many of us will begin refusing to allow the pass. Faster real riders, no problem. Jerks on e-bikes, you can wait for the double track or wide area.
@@Chicago_Bikepacker not my yard clown. But way to be that guy. I’d say never trust a guy that takes a mtb video and makes it political. We could use less riders like you. All joking aside seriously lame
Sure, e-bike for my 86 year old mother. Or, if you’ve got a long term injury. Otherwise, minimal energy expenditure requirements keeps the riff-raff off the trails.

What it was created for is irrelevant, if you are doing it for fun, go with whatever is most fun for you, BUT: if you are doing it for fitness, be aware that emtb drastically changes the nature of your workout, sometimes for the better, but it could also be for the worse.
