  • When someone's having a mental health crisis, what should they do? Who do they call? Increasingly it's the police and a Newsnight investigation reveals there's been a massive rise in mental health call-outs by people who’ve rung the police across the UK.
In Merseyside, mental-health related incidents have gone up 313% in 5 years.
Some police chiefs think it's down to lack of mental health services in the community and officers increasingly being seen as the first resort for people in a crisis.
Newsnight’s Sima Kotecha goes out with Merseyside Police and a mental health nurse to attend to a call. This report contains suicidal references.

The police have no business dealing with people suffering with "mental illness" who are people that actually need empathic care, and understanding in order to heal. This is sick.

This isn’t a surprise at the age of 19 I met an army server, finished hes course of duty, no after care for he’s mental health and was left homeless on the streets. Our governments in cause these issues by there own actions. It’s not just about services working smarter it’s about getting rid of the dead weight so the services can function as they need to be. Plenty of times I’ve taken people to a&e and rang police for people who’ve overdosed or people who’ve tried to kill another person, they all get the same treatment minus those who hurt others go to court, they all get a leaflet about there local mental health and sent on there way. Our systems aren’t doing there job no wonder the issue is worstenknf

He needs a purpose in life , he needs others to help him find that purpose as he can't find it himself, don't see other ways of solving, and not be suicidal ....

Fantastic work by the BBC to highlight the problem - more attention needs to be brought to the issue. However, I do not agree that vulnerable people can give permission to be filmed under these circumstances. This is someone in a mental health crisis - they are not capable of providing informed consent. Please consider this next time you film people in similar circumstances.

Where are the GPs? The police aren’t social or health workers.

I’m glad they’ve added to the story people who’ve been subject to police mistreatment due to mental health it happens a lot. They take no care of what there doing around those who are vunrable and take advantage of the situation

I'm 15 and I tried to end it with a blade around 2 weeks ago. Parents called CAMHS and the bloody police turned up - useless! Hope this poor man makes it through.

This is a result of political choices. Not people fleeing their own terrible life situations from other countries. Money is wasted on ridiculous things & this isn't one of them

I have a host of mental illnesses. Involuntary treatment is morally right in many cases. If you would help a dog in the condition of the person, the person probably isn't well enough to make a rational choice about treatment.

I wonder if the decline of mental health in the UK correlates with the decline of access and funding of NHS services, the decline of living standards in the UK and the increase of people struggling with money problems as provisions and services are being stripped away systematically from the most in need.
