Jason Newsted was truly the BEST backup vocalist any band can dream of. So much passion and energy. Miss that dude.
CreepingDeathMoscow91. Speak for itself, he smashed that last verse. Much love!!
I like underdogs, so I always like Jason Newsted.
Nope..! Michael Anthony kicks the shit out of everyone.
@@ThisIsMeOnUA-cam exactly, brother!
I became a Jason fan at monsters of rock in akron rubber bowl. He kept flipping us off screaming at us to get up!! loved it!
James's voice reached perfection on this show. Absolutely perfect.
100%
Agreed.
Sorry to tell you but they used autotune this show.
@@Not_Nyx864Then I guess they use it in all the concerts huh? Cause that’s the same voice over and over again.
Amen, who knew that he had this voice back in the 80s.
I don't get why people say "load" wasn't a good album. This song is one of their best!
I used to think it was shit until I sat down and really listened to it. I think its great
***** me too
Load and ReLoad are both amazing and so, so underrated IMHO
its because ppl who like metallica, like them for their thrashier stuff and this is a lot different from that...
75ShadowShooter i love metallica.. every album.. everything .. never stopped loving them i felt and understood there hard rough times... heart aches...... I always understood it .. I was never the type to just say i dont like you anymore due to circumstances..
Weirdly, The Outlaw Torn might be my favorite song behind Fade To Black and Orion. Such an underrated piece
In the same boat as you, Blackened Orion Outlaw
Incredible! I also consider Orion and fade the best of the best! Great man
remember I got this album and reload shortly after, but so many good memories playing PS1 cause I got that the same christmas as reload. But these albums take me back to that gaming lounge in the basement playing with all the lights off late at night, tomb raider II getting lost in the mazes just vibing to these albums while a blizzard blew outside. I love the darkness and the snow, keep everyone away.
Yeah it's crazy how underappreciated it is.
In my opinion The Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me and Until it Sleeps are 3 masterpieces superior to the majority of the song of the golden era of Metallica
I don't call The Outlaw Torn a song, I call it a composition, especially S&M version. This is masterpiece.
well.....a song....has to be....a composition also....so......................
YOU'RE both right!
Just do Fixxxer
2024 anyone? Masterpiece!
Acá estamos 🍻
The greatest band that's ever lived in my opinion. They've done it all.... thrash, heavy metal, hard rock, blues, country, and even a crazy concept album with Lou Reed. They've never been scared of doing anything! What an inspiration...
Tammi Davidson Rush fucking blows lmao
Derek Harris Big Time Rush is the best band ever obviously
Don't forget folk. Low Mans Lyric anyone?
Try Maiden ;)
Led Zeppelin!!! \m/
I know the chances are slim to none you'll see this, but Metallica is everything to me. I sang so much of Load to my son when he was a newborn. When my mom died, it got me through. Bad days of PTSD or depression...it's always there. This in particular.
Load and Reload are GREAT albums for heartbreak. I should know. I hope you are doing okay now.
Same here Chelsea, through .you whole life, good and bad times of all kinds. Always been my go to.
I was bullied a lot when I was a kid. And that led to isolation. I was even thinking about ending it all a couple years ago and then I discovered Metallica. This band has helped me a lot (heck I would've been dead by now). Metallica is more than just a metal band for me. It's the thing that's keeping me alive.
God bless you. You are loved.
I'm glad you had them! (Metallica) I did it with my oldest son, I also lost someone so precious to me the day he was born. My heart shattered and.. I felt like only Metallica could feel my pain. And now when I catch him singing along in the car when I play Metallica, my heart sings! I hope your doing better now! 🙏💚
One of the most underrated concerts of all time
cheers to that!
In 2001, less than a year into my Metallica education (and having only heard Reload and Black album at this point), I purchased the S&M DVD out of curiosity - I immediately declared this version their greatest moment... 16 years later, I stand by it.
Load and Reload are phenomenal albums.
jamie flexman absolutely. I don't understand the hatred of those two albums.
i absolutely love this song. mainly because i can sing it and play guitar at the same time
I wasn't a huge fan of Load when it came out, I don't think it's what the fans "wanted" at that time. To me, it's an album that got better with age and has stood the test of time very well. This version of Outlaw Torn is my favorite song of all time, it's simply fantastic. I think Load has some of their best work but it's very underappreciated, much like this concert. This concert is my favorite thing Metallica has ever done, and I would give anything to go back in time and see this in person.
God I miss Jason's background vocals that, " HEAR ME " is so heavy, and ugh.. I miss Jason. This will forever be one of my favorite Metallica performances, EVERYONE KILLS IT, including the orchestra.
100%. In addition to that, him going face to face jamming with the upright bassist toward the end of the song is one of my favorite parts of the whole concert. Respect on top of respect. Newsted is where it's at and it has been that way for me for decades.
9:16 Two different kind of bass players rocking the same tune... beautiful!
More like Jason trolling the other bassist as he can't see the conductor anymore :p
@@DrumFuckerFr Bassist:....
Jason: i am the conductor now
@@SonsOfDeForest by the way this bassist is the same in sm 1 and 2, you can see him play Anesthesia
Electric bass and double bass; direct cousins.
And knowing Jason's love for music in general, he thought it was just as cool as the the other guy did.
Here I sit, listening to this 20 years after the first time I heard it and still getting chills. This version of this song is the best they ever performed. Tell me I’m wrong.
I remember going to local music store in ‘99 and buying the S&M album, I was 16, listening to it over and over and over again, I’d take it everywhere with me and my Discman. One time, my girlfriend and some of her friends thought it would be funny to hide the album as a prank, when I got it back and found out it wasn’t lost and they we’re fucking with me I dumped her. You don’t fuck with a man and his Metallica albums.
Same bro
same bro, was 16 n blown away!
Amen!
I would, but I can't.
Both Kirk's and James' solos are masterpieces.
Lars' drumming on this is actually really great. Tight as hell, with some great fills.
I couldn’t disagree more
My god that build up into the solo was perfect.
I mean then again, so is this whole concert.
That part gives me the chills every damn time... one of my favorite moments in any Metallica song
it's what Metallica does best
2019 confirmed bro. I hope they play outlaw and bleeding. Amazing songs with the orchestra
My God it's how many years later here in 2022 and I'm still getting goosebumps listening to this song!!!
Same
@@keagenhudson6979 same here
I listen to this album at least once a month, imo it’s their best
I destroyed my brothers double VHS from watching it over and over in 7th grade. Now I'm chilling with my 6 year old watching this in bed during a thunderstorm. Hell yeah!
@@kurtjoseph6232 awesome! I used to jam with my son. Mom didn't know of course. Lol
James' s voice dude, so agressive and at same time so beautiful
Makes you really miss Jason's backing vocals, imagine how good they would have sounded for Spit Out The Bone
His backing vocals are badass
If Jason was still in the band they would not be playing songs like spit out the bone though it is Rob that made them go back to thrash
@@peoplevsradio317 I doubt that.
While I don’t know if they would of went back to Trash if Jason stayed (I like to think there would be a good chance tho) I think he would of worked well from Spit Out The Bone vocally.
@@peoplevsradio317 I realize this is a year old, but for archival references. Jason Newsted has WAY more thrash cred than Rob. Suicidal was crossover and Infectious Grooves was a rad funk hardcore hybrid. Jason was a founding member of fucking Flotsam and Jetsam. Goofy ass
Agreed, thought the same thing when I heard it and those who say they would not have gone thrash if Jason was still in the band thinks Jason had a lot more credibility in the band then he did
2:47-2:56 Probably the first time I've seen someone stage dive at a semi-classical concert where most are dressed up and formality seems to be partially predominant.
Both beautiful and funny. Dude rocks :)
Ahmed alShihabi Kirk was like "Tf is this shit" 😂😂😂
I
Ive watched this a million times and never noticed that until i read ur comment. FUCKING awesome!!!! WHOEVER HE IS,, YOU FUCKING ROCK KICK ASS AND SET UR OWN STANDARDS. LOVE U MY FELLOW METALLICA BROTHER
James had revealed that a younger Skrillex had made a stage dive in this concert.could be this guy, can’t tell.
Heather this is the most underrated metal thing I have ever seen 😂😂
The Outlaw Torn is not a just song. That’s the revelation. My the best song from Metallica ✊🤘
James Hetfield is and always will be my favorite vocalist. \m/
TheRobVlogs FRONTMAN! 🤘🏼❤️
Agree. Him and Jason.
Absofuckinglutely
😎
The man is an absolute LEGEND!!
That solo gives me goosebumps, one of my personal favorite solos
At 6:20
9:16 Jason jamming with the bass/cello guy xD
Evan Sanders bassists unite!:D
That's badass as fuck!! \m/ I think Mr. Newsted deserved better from the other members :/
Hahahhahahah that was really funny bro
4:37 why hasn't Rob learned to support James on vocals like Jason in almost 20 years? With Jason, this chorus sounds as powerful as possible!
Because Jason was capable of being a frontman. Rob is all bass, more power to him.
this whole entire concert is completely flawless
i agree with you bro. no metal band can come close to this performance. its so amazing not even a bad song or music
Except Lars...he was terrible as usual 😂
@Daddy Danos if you watched all the behind-the-scenes videos, before they did the encore of Battery, Kirk and Lars were talking backstage, and Kirk told Lars, "Fuck! I Fucked the entrance to 'Roam'! Fuck!"
I've listened to that beginning dozens of times, and he hit 1 extra note after the Sitar part should've ended.
@@Chicagodog-tu1ekthe ending of roam tho, the best ending i heard live of that song

This song transcends all genres and time itself. Every time I listen to it, I'm teletransported to a special place immediately. The blend between Metallica (James' nostalgic voice) and The Symphony simply is pure perfection.
Long Live Metallica! 🤘🏽

Yep
I really like James Voice in 1999
I totally agree with you:-)

+GT8686 his best performances are 89-92 and 98-99
+Berkhan Kırca I would say 86 -92; 97-99, 2008, 2016/2017
I like when Lars sings along with the songs while he's playing. Sometimes I feel like no one in the band besides the singer actually know the words to the song
i wish james would sing spit out the bone alone. robs vocals kill it.lol
@Shallex yeah but after all this time in the band,Rob's backing vocals aren't even close to Jason's
Lars is the manager and he also helps write the music
Lars writes a lot of the music and lyrics.
Steve Harris does that a lot too
Kirk hammet's most underrated solo of all time. Absolute perfection.
One of jasons most badass basslines \m/
My friend of misery Also had a dern sure awesome bassline
***** yes thats a awesome bassline to and the god that failed :)
patrik bieri I think it’s actually James who came up with the bassline
@@conradsz nope actually not on that song, Jason said he was proud about that :)
@@danielssonsgarage no man, James recorded bass in load/reload demos and he insisted to keep the bass lines that way, those were recorded by James and Lars only, you can find all of the demos on UA-cam;))
I'd give anything to go back in time to this concert. James had perfect control and dare I say domination over his vocal range. Everything is so tight. The overtones are insane
Even if you can't have a time machine at least the concert has been preserved. I'm thinking of picking up the DVD myself.
"Domination".
I see what you did there.
"Hear me

I actually got chills just from reading this
OMG James voice is amazing
Steven Baksh I think I see you in the comments section for every vid I watch
Jason really holds it down though.
whoever thought of mixing metal and Symphony is the best person on the planet !
Bob Rock
Playing with a live symphony is something that I'd love to see iron Maiden and Megadeth do.
+Anthony Kartsev Fk No.. Michael Kamen is the guy!
+Hammerhead547 IRONMAIDEN! I could imagine Fear of the Dark with an orchestra behind it, that would the most beautiful thing on the planet.
Cliff Burton
This version of Outlaw Torn is my favorite song of all time. Simply amazing.
Load is a great album that stood the test of time and aged well, I just don't think it's what the fans needed/wanted when it was released..
I would give anything to go back in time and see this concert live.
I think there's a doctorate thesis to be written on the evolution of James' vocal.
listen to hit the lights..then listen to this song. LOL its funny
Fulmer, I think you're right! lol
I'll spare you the time of writing: 1981-2019=FUCKING TREMENDOUS
@@amadeuskyouma1314 If anything the development he made was that he learned how to not blow his voice out on a regular basis, and discovered his ability to sing in a more traditional matter outside of thrash metal.
@@mirage5566 well if anything the S&M dvd suffers from post pro vocal autotune as hell. I love it, really much because james sings awesome on it anyway, but they still finetuned even the most minisquel pitch shifts in the OG recording. Don't know who approved this but the whole dvd is autotuned in postpro, which kinda ruins like 10% of the experience for me now as i know, but other than that still awesome and chilling. It was just back then when the pitch shift correction soft was the new thing, so i think that somebody from marketing and production decided to overuse it in this one. Still awesome gig tho.
This is one of the deepest songs ever written in the history of music. I love it so much.
Best live album.
9:15 it must be so rare for a classic orchestra musician to feel this, two bandmates facing each other and head banging while playing, awesome feeling!
On August 18th 2016 at 10:54 pm my son was born as this song played in the background.
Benny Dean & The Gunns that's so badass
Benny Dean & The Gunns did you name him outlaw?
No sir. Apollo is his name. After the God of music and Apollo Creed from the Rocky movies. Oh and he is almost two months old and love watching Metallica videos.
Benny Dean & The Gunns apollo? Dude! Respect! That's an awesome name!
The Outlaw Born
When I was young, later on until I was 54. And it always will be. My daughter is a Metallica fan.Metallica is a big part of my life. The best songs, the best performers
The solo in this song is my favorite guitar solo ever. It give me chills every time.
@9:17 when Jason full rocks out with the double bassist is proper good guy vibes
In my opinion, this is their best song ever. Only this version though. The symphony brilliantly fills in the holes left in the original Load composition.
I like it on the Load album as well but I agree this is the better version.
the prfect song
Jay Poole I SO AGREE THE SYMPHONY MADE IT BETTER
True of the entire album. Im not a fan of metallica beyond this concert. This concert though. God Damn.
Jay Poole totally agree
Easily one of the most underrated Metallica songs, along with Bleeding Me and Fixxer.
duuuudee yesssss. fixxxer is my fav song ever. 3 best songs, hands down
Love Bleeding Me.
My favourite
Yo, this song and Bleeding Me is 💯
fixxer!!!!
Honest to God, Load is my favorite Metallica record behind Master of Puppets. Almost every song on that record resonates with me and I can appreciate and understand other people's opinions of it. But for me it is absolutely prime. And this version of The Outlaw Torn just helped to highlight everything that was right with that record. S&M is by far my favorite live album ever.
Jason was the engine that drove their live shows. It was impossible to take your eyes off of him and get a rush whenever u heard him taking backing vox or lead vox. Creeping Death is the perfect example of that. Now they have a huge hole in their concerts. Letting him go was the worst thing they could've done. I honestly think Het and Ulrich thought they could easily replace him. They found out how wrong they were and still are too this day
I first heard No Leaf Clover in December of '99, and got the album as a Christmas gift the same year, and wore it out. The combination of symphonic and heavy metal sounds hypnotized me. Even if the sound of the audience takes away from the experience a tiny bit, when I first heard Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra playing together, I cried; it sounded so beautiful to me then, and it still does today. \m/
sheepie scribbles I burst into tears when I heard the solo on Bleeding Me.I cried, too.
Fuck Yeah brother Me too!! \m/
James's VOICE IN THIS IS GODLY.
I think S&M is their best album. All is here : James voice at its summit, genius arrangments by Michael Keman and one of their best songs for the occasion : no leaf clover.
Not only is this a masterpiece. But Kirk slayed that solo......
Love Kirk his playful intro is so reminiscent of the stabs Tonnie Iommi plays on Black Sabbath records most notably War Pigs.
This song is so under-rated.
toddlerwipes yeah we get it
I'm sorry, Enter MetallicA Sandman.
toddlerwipes underrated like the whole load and reload album
Yeah
True. Same with bleeding me.
It’s their peak of playing live music. Lars was killing it.
Load and ReLoad are easily the most underrated albums in metal. This is a fucking epic song, no argue about that.
More rock then metal has a few metal songs and some songs have metal riffs
This version of this song could be the best thing Metallica have ever done, I was blown away when I first heard it. Couldn't get enough of it! Anyway, much love to everyone and to everyone, keep on rocking out to the world's greatest Metal band of ALL time in my eyes for sure. Metallica baby! 🤘👊🙌👏🔥💖
His voice peak in this 90s era. Enough distortion with enough technique, not too clean as today, not too damaging as in the 80s. Perfectly balanced as all things should be.
James's voice and emotion in this song gives me goosbumps
Such an underrated song. Sounds amazing with symphony.
I’ve always really loved that riff that James plays starting at 7:47 it looks easy to play, but sounds so good:
That is no riff my friend that is the best James solo
it is more of a riff@@JUSTICE971
ah, yeah....70 years metal head young here and this is the BEST. If it weren't for symphony, metal might not exist. I played violin in grade school orchestra. How I wish I could have been one of those violinists on this one. Battery and One will blow you away too! Love, love, love it!!!
Best hair, best vocals, best performance, best song, best Metallica ever
that note James hits at 2:38 is on whole another level... incredible vocals. Bro was born to sing this song .
Fine as wine in 99. Most beautiful & talented man on earth..
Who?
@elianad2083 James, of course lol he always had the most masculine sexy stage presence to me.
This is slow, heavy, magic and uplifting. Absolutely my favourite Metallica song
And now I wait my whole lifetime for you
And now I wait my whole lifetime for you
I ride the dirt, I ride the tide for you
I search the outside, search inside for you
To take back what you left me
I know I'll always burn to be
The one who seeks so I may find
And now I wait my whole lifetime
Outlaw of torn and I'm torn
So on I wait my whole lifetime for you
So on I wait my whole lifetime for you
The more I search, the more my need for you
The more I bless, the more I bleed for you
You make me smash the clock and feel
I'd rather die behind the wheel
Time was never on my side
So on I wait my whole lifetime
Outlaw of torn and I'm torn
Hear me
And if close my mind in fear
Please pry it open
See me
And if my face becomes sincere
Beware
Hold me
And when I start to come undone
Stitch me together
Save me
And when you see me strut
Remind me of what left this outlaw torn
Not outlaw of torn its '' the outlaw torn''
The build up at the end of this song is why I keep coming back
The best part of the lyrics "TIME WAS NEVER ON MY SIDE SO ON I'LL WAIT MY WHOLE LIFE TIME FOR YOU"
What did Load and Reload do to deserve the hate that they get? Just because it's not the usual thrash that Metallica did doesn't mean it's bad. They changed for The Black Album, and people still like that, but hate Load and Reload. They stepped outside their comfort zone, and the result was awesome. This is one of those songs where you can either listen to the studio version or this version and be absolutely blown away by either. In my opinion, we should get one more album like Load.
Been a metallica fan for over half my life im now 30 . Whats crazy to me in this song in a couple of times especially right towards the end, after solo on the breakdown where james fires a litle smile plus his comment "feel it man" earlier portraits what it is to be human. To achieve perfection in whatever you do . After all these years being a "rock god" when the music hit him because he simply felf it .it could not be hidden or contained. James at the very moment knew what it must fell like to hit a grand slam in the world series , or when van gough finished starry night. If you doubt watch his body language again. This is what being human is perfection achieved and recognised even for a split second.
your comment made me think of Jason during the song Of Wolf and Man! he get so much into it! Metallica is a unique band for that!
I performed "Whole lotta Rosie" one night and the crowd got up and danced like maniacs. it was intoxicating. I wanted that feeling again and again
I love how Jason was rock'n out w/ the orchestra;s bass guy at the end.
That was so lit.
One of the greatest love songs ever. James is the best writer ever!
Most badass Kirk Hammet's guitar solo has starting from 5.21 so softly and then it becomes so madly...I've been listened Metallica's music almost 30 years and I never get bored and I keep listening now and I will...
Love outlaw torn especially s&m version
This version is INCREDIBLE

S and M...so clean. The orchestra, amazing. I have always loved Metallica, but this was a whole new sound and it is/was AMAZING!
S&M is my favorite Metallica album!!! It's power, intensity, epicness, finesse, and feeling, all wrapped up in one!!! Both M and the SFSO rocked!!! Heavy metal and classical, a pair made in Heaven!!! ❤❤❤😊😊😊
And both solos by Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield are pure bliss!!! ❤❤❤😊😊😊
Clear proof that Lars is a fucking awesome drummer.
Of course! If he wasn't an awesome drummer he wouldn't have kept up one of the greatest Metal bands of all time for so long.
***** Oh how well you know me :)
Damn right. Sure, he’s not the best of all time... A lot of drummers hate his work because he doesn’t play very dynamically, he just beats the crap out of his set- but if there’s anything to be learned from Load/ReLoad (and especially this song), it’s that he really has the capacity to lay down some subtle and nuanced stuff.
Those that think he is shite only inherited their opinion. They don't really know what they are talking about.
Was
I think their best concert was '89 seattle but this is closest to that.
- James' vocals are above his standard and i think that is a high standard
- Jason is Jason. always playing with so much passion and demon like back vocals
- Kirk'll give you the ultimate eargasm through his solos, that you wouldn't want it to end
And even Lars is good.
So underrated it should be a crime
Jason jamming with the cellist towards the end is awesome
James’ voice in this entire show is perfection
This performance is a true Masterpiece of musicianship. An epic fusion of Metal and Classical music. A true joy of listening pleasure.
best performance ever actually
There's no doubt...

All of the planets aligned with this band and this song! Pure magic!!!
Load was a fantastic album. It had such a heavy tone with deep messaging, with a blues architecture to bring it all together.
Metallica + an orchestra sounds really awesome. I never woulda thought of it. Brilliant idea, whoever came up with it
David Fellner I read somewhere it was Cliff Burton who used to say they should try something like this haha

Michael Kamen approached them as far as I know. He was the conductor and a metallica fan.

Such an amazing version of this song. In my opinion, better than the original. Love it.
Totally agree!
One of many hidden gems of the Tallica boys. This tune didn't get much attention, but it stood the test of time.
Yes it is right mate
this song always gives me chills
True story believe it or not. I have what I believe is the very last guitar signed by all 4of these guys before Jason left. Minneapolis sold out so hard that they added 2 more shows, I waited out in the FREEZING cold 3 nights to get this done. They finally all came out on the last night. I was still in high school and just had a very old Conrad guitar that everyone else was snickering about. When hetfield finally came to me, he grabbed it like it was Excalibur and literally caressed it for several minutes and finally murmurs out, "I had one just like this when I was a kid" he signed it and graciously gave it back to me as if I had made his whole tour, the other people were all agape mouths on the ground. It was one of the greatest moments of my life.... Jason left the band shortly after. I have a pic of me and Jason while he is signing it. I hope this message reaches you guys somehow as I have now turned 40 and this song speaks to me even more now. Thank you for the amazing memory!
LOAD was a fucking masterpiece. Too many people want to live in the past, but not Metallica, they try new things and fucking succeed... Well maybe not when they get with Lou Reed, but you get my point. LOAD 20TH ANNIVERSARY FULL ALBUM SHOW WOULD BE JIZZZZZZZ!
Man, Jasons' bass work on this song is just so slick and groovy
6:23 Perfect fill by Lars to accompany the solo
