"Mr Morris, your bullets will be useless, he must be beheaded! I suggest you use your big bowie knife!" "Well, I wasn't planning on getting THAT CLOSE Doc." :::Van Helsing laughs::::
I thought the brightly coloured cowboy outfits that Dracula wears when he's in 1890s London were absurd. And then I learnt - from a fashion design type - that kind of get up actually was the fashion among the swell set at the time. They really, really did the research.
This was such a great movie, Gary Oldman needs a lifetime achievement award for all the great rolls he played but the entire cast was amazing in B.Ss Dracula.
I loved how Frances insisted on making this movie with practical effects. It's one of the last movies that did it. As for Oldman, he killed it as Dracula in this. IMO, Oldman did Dracula as much justice as Christopher Reeve did for Superman.
The only effect in this movie that is not practical is the weird blue fire in the forest, that is digital, all the rest is practical and in camera, even that shot of the map while Jonathan Hacker travels to Transylvania was made practically with rear projections.
One thing I do know .. when I watched this the first time and saw the 3 vampire ladies "having fun" with Keanu.. I just thought "That's how i want to go".. or with a grenade and Vasquez in an Air vent 😁
@Fred Bloggs I disagree. Bad guys that know they do the wrong thing are more compelling in my eyes. Nothing can redeem them. As long as I understand that they like to do bad things then I don’t need a whole weepy backstory to try to justify their actions. The whole villan has to be the ”hero of their own story” is a bit overplayed and a modern cliché in writing. Regardless, my point here is that Dracula isn’t a ”sympathetic” character, they did not portray the character right. Even if you prefer ”sympathetic” villans, that is not who Dracula is. I would be equally upset if they made a villan that is supposed to be ”sympathetic” into a full blown non-redeemable evil villan.
@@christianbjorck816 In a way I somewhat agree with your statement. For sure, Dracula isn't supposed to be sympathized with. I felt the same way when Rob Zombie did his version of "Halloween". The whole reason I loved Michael Myers is that he's "pure unadulterated evil" according to Dr. Loomis. In Zombie's version, they show him in a broken home, with a pervert abusive alcoholic father and an indifferent mother, gets bullied at school, and it causes him to snap. That turned me off of the movie, because it makes you feel sorry for the kid, when the kid is supposed to be evil, period. That's like trying to show Damien that was just poorly conceived by Satan, and if he just got some therapy, those 6's would just magically disappear off his head. But also, with the "somewhat" part of my statement, some villains can be sympathized with. Dr. Freeze, for example, though he does terrify Gotham City, he does it for Nora, his wife who lies in stasis until he can cure her illness, and so I always looked at him as a tragic villain in Batman's Rogue Gallery. I have a few others, but this comment is already longer than needs to be, and you don't need to read a book while enjoying Minty's videos lol. Cheers!
@@christianbjorck816 Well, I kind of sympathized with him a bit since he lost his true love and was hoping somehow to find her again. Plus, he fought to protect the church and in return they told him that her soul was lost because of her suicide and she wouldn't find her way to Heaven. That was really important to people back then.
I was 14 when this movie came out and it still gives me goosebumps. At the end of the movie I felt bad for Dracula. All he wanted was to be reunited with his lover.
It was a tragic ending giving Dracula a more human demeanor. It made him less a monster. I really liked this version and Oldman did a fantastic job. He is always intense in his acting.
Yeah I was 21(1992?) for most of that year and dug the movie immensely. This year I saw Nosferatu for the first time just the other day. I dig that one now as well. It's a creepy black and white silent movie that came out in 1922.The people who made it were sued cuz they didn't have permission to produce it. I saw this one on youtube(link). I was smoking a considerable amount of weed while I watched it. ua-cam.com/video/HGH_2F82JCM/v-deo.html
Gary Oldman and Johnny Depp are two of the best character actors in the world and I’m so jealous of Winona Rider for being able to work with them both in the 90s
I don't mind Keanu as much as I used too; Harker is supposed to be a dull, normal guy. One thing that always tickles me about this movie too, is that there's a novelization. Not a reprint of the original novel, but a book based on the movie based on the book.
What I liked about this film was it used a universal approach to the vampire folklore. In many scenes Dracula is not just some aristocrat in a cape, but also a shape-shifting monster who takes on all sorts of forms. Vampires are seen differently throughout out world folklore and not all of them are human-like.
I'm sure Keanu was so thrilled to be cast by FFC. I can't blame him. It just wasn't for him. I'm not even an actor, but if FFC asked me to do a movie, I'd do it.
@@wasteland70 You: "Hey, thanks again for giving me this opportunity, Mr. Ford Coppola." FFC: "Yeah yeah...Just take your shirt off and lie down on the bed." You: "Wow...Hollywood! This is great! I can't wait to tell all my friends back home!" You: "Say Mr. Ford Coppola..." FFC: "Francis." You: "Oh...sorry...Mr. Francis Ford Coppola...Where is the rest of the crew and the other actors?" FFC: "Who?" You: "Wait a minute...This isn't a movie set! This is just a seedy motel room! And that's not a movie camera! That's just a Camcorder!" FFC: "Hah! You got me!" You: "Were you...Were you gonna try to have sex with me?" FFC: "I was! I was totally gonna try to have sex with you!" You: "It almost worked! I almost fell for it! You knucklehead!" FFC: *Looks at the camera and shrugs* That's exactly how it would go. Exactly.
Coppola has a way at picking young people who will go on to do great things. The outsiders cast, Keanu & even his daughter though the latter 2 were awful when working with him
Absolutely ,Dark Shadows was definitely a turning point for this genre.Frank Langella’s version ,while not nearly as good, did bring a more sensual feeling to the character.
I love this movie so much. Especially the costumes. I just adore Eiko Ishioka's designs. I personally never had a problem with Keanu Reeves's performance, because when I watched it back then, I saw it in German (no DVDs back then..) and nowadays I just don't give a damn about the 'Reeves-problem'. Same with Kevin Costner in Robin Hood, btw. But anyway... The movie is creative, funny, dark, emotional, beautiful and still feels fresh.
This movie is a masterpiece, through and through. The atmosphere, the sights, the sounds, the presence it brings is superb. I love this interpretation of Bram Stoker's Dracula. This movie also put Gary Oldman as one of my favorite actors, too. Anyone who has not yet experienced this movie, it's worth gathering your favorite food, beverages and loved ones to watch this amazing work of art.
Minty: "It's not a Horror-Movie per-say -" Movie: features scene of three vampire women _eating a baby_ much to Harker's horror and disbelief while Dracula looks on and laughs menacingly. Yeah...not a horror movie.
Remember Minty is Australian. They all got rocks for brains. He is funny as most Australians can be. However he keep bad mouthing Keanu. I am going to go over there and burn that country down.
Yeah, I agree with you. I have a major in languages - Portuguese/English, and I read Dracula among other several English literature classics, and I remember that I was impressed at how faithful to the book the movie adaptation was.
How is it faithful to the book? The book was a stunning tribute to a woman who was so amazing and strong that men that didn't even know her were willing to give up their very souls for her. (This in a time where women were supposed to be quiet and submissive and stay in the background.) Stoker gave us a female lead who "had a woman's heart and a man's brain." This movie was a weird tragic love story where the demon who was the dark hero is willing to fight for a wife that was no longer his (to the point where he'll kill her husband) and she betrayed her husband for him. Not to mention that in the book Mina wasn't a reincarnation of Dracula's wife, she always saw him as a monster. In the book, she was so compassionate and caring that a literal lunatic who was so afraid to die that he ate flies to avoid it willingly gave his life to save hers. In this movie, she was a plot device to make us feel sorry for Dracula. I'm not even dinging this mess for the odd shots of eyes at the top of the screen or the terrible acting. The plot wasn't anywhere near the book. What am I missing that you think it was and I don't?
@@Laurtew like I said elsewhere, the booke has a line that goes unexplained when one of Dracula's brides accuses him of never having loved. He says, 'Yes, I too can love. You yourselves can tell that from the past. Is it not so?' In addition, some of the dialogue in the movie is quoted verbatim from the novel.
I like 'Bram Stoker's Dracula'. The Drac in this movie reminds me somewhat of Jerry Dandridge in 'Fright Night' given that in their younger human form they appear handsome, suave and charming. Which is all part of their deception of course.
I happen to be a fan of both films, and totally agree with you. But I gotta commend Oldman for his stellar performance. I watched the film back in the day in the movies, and I remember being blown away at that time, as a teenager!
Bram Stoker's Dracula is one of the all-time top 5 movies, for me. I've seen it 8 or 9 times so far, and never get tired of watching it. I love the story, music, cinematography, etc, so much.

Thank you. I wanted to ask about that because it looks like his artwork. I think it’s fitting. Wish I had known about it because I would’ve bought it. Bet it’s worth a lot of money now since this movie is having a resurgence of appreciation.
Gary Oldman is beyond description. Harrison Ford said on the set of Air Force One, they called him scary Gary because he was so into his role. When he portrayed Beethoven in Immortal Beloved, that is actually Gary playing all of the piano parts. He is an absolute treasure and I haven't seen all of his movies but I've loved every one I have seen.
In the US, it was always pronounced You-rhythmic-s. I saw Gary Oldman talking about his speaking accent. The gist of the comment was, he has done so many different accents in his career he can't remember his own true accent. So, the only role Gary Oldman can't play is himself. All The Sounds of Fear by Harlan Ellison, when I read it, the protagonist is always portrayed by Oldman.
One thing Minty did NOT Mention... is that to DO the role... Gary actually WENT to Romania to LEARN the Accent AND HOW TO SPEAK THE ACTUAL LANGUAGE! Now THAT is preparing for a Roll! :D
Upon seeing the scene of Wynona and Gary dancing around with all the candles surrounding them, .... Am I the only one who's instantly reminded of The Police's "Wrapped Around Your Finger" video?
The visual design of this film is still delicious! "Bram's" and "Interview" really dug into the decadent sex appeal of the genre, in body, gesture, and aesthetic. Nitpick as we fans may, they're both a high water mark in cinema vampire history.
Minty should do a review of Leon: The Professional (theatrical - the Director's cut is an ABOMINATION!), which is one of my favourites, where Gary Oldman gives a SUPERB bad guy performance.
I am a Romanian and I just wanted to say, that this movie absolutely butchered Romania's geography. It is ridiculous to go from Constanta, to Bran and pass trough Bistrita. It is a major and useless detour and it would most certainly not take you 3 days by carriage ride on the roads from the 1800s. :))) Oh and I am 100% sure that no nun in that time would be able to understand or let alone speak and write English....
Along with Frank Langella's Dracula, the Gary Oldman version is my favorite. I definitely found myself rooting for Dracula and thinking Van Helsine (sp?) the monster. I was also totally blown away by the use of the shadows in this movie.
I have never read either novel of both movies but you can tell by this movie they made certain to keep everything on point and not take it waaaay out there like they used to and have with other films !
Out of all characters of Dracula, I like Van Helsing. I really like Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing. When I was younger, playing the game Dracula with them. I used the services of Anthony Hopkins and Peter Cushing, to play Van Helsing, whenever my friends and I play Van Helsing. Also I surprisingly used James Bond for making Van Helsing as a ladies man. It's weird, but unique. Anyone agrees? Recently, I've been making a bag that Van Helsing would use. I have a cross and everything, Van Helsing used. It was awesome.
Apparently, the reason he kept the filming in America- was because he learnt from his nightmarish experience of location filming with ‘Apocalypse, Now’....
It was a problem with common audience preconceptions about him. Apparently you need great actors to play young overwhelmed bank clerks out of their depth, not young and probably intimidated actors under great pressure to perform in a bound-to-be historic Coppola movie. Poor bastard. He did a solid job and got slammed with mockery in Bill and Ted-ese... dude.
The comic worked visually because it was done by Mike Mignola, creator of Hellboy, and visual designer of the Dracula movie. The comic was forgotten about because it was produced and distributed by TOPPS, not known for comics but trading cards and bubble-gum. The Dracula comic was one of the strongest pieces of work Mignola ever produced. It is magnificent and stands along with Bernie Wrightson's Frankenstein as a benchmark in classic horror adaptation.
I have a friend I knew in London who deisgned some of the costumes like Lucy's wedding dress and that red robe Dracula wears in the beginning. He's from Serbia, vampire country!
This is by far the best version of Dracula I've ever seen. I've watched this movie many times. There are soo many tiny details you can miss, like how the shadow of the old Dracula moves differently then the one we see (trying to choke Keanu). But I also love the intro and how we see how devastated he becomes after coming from war to find his love has committed suicide and cursing god and becoming this "evil" creature only to hope to find her again. It's a tragedy that really makes you root for the enemy than the "heroes" that are trying to save the girl Dracula loves. The soundtrack to his movie is also amazing. It really makes it more like a sad romance than a scary movie. It's a tragedy, but also a great story. This might be my favorite Gary Oldman movie. He's done a ton of great movies, but this one was something else.
I saw this thing three times when it came out in the theaters, and it never got old with repeated viewing. Such a lurid-looking production with amazing costumes and (Keanu Reeves aside) standout performances. I think Coppola's decision to shoot on a sound stage (something he did to great effect on 1981's criminally-neglected 'One from the Heart') really brought out an old-school Hammer horror feel, while at the same time keeping things fresh with the costumes and an inspired script. And Minty, I totally agree with you that Gary Oldman can play anything: what other actor can include on one resume spot-on interpretations of Dracula, Commissioner Gordon, Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols, Beethoven, and Winston Churchill? I don't know as the Count was his finest performance, but it's certainly both memorable and distinctive. As always, thank you for posting this.
When I was in college, this movie played 24/7 for two weeks straight in our apartment. You never saw the whole thing in it's entirety... just bits 'n pieces between classes. Good times!
Amazing book. Ok movie. Visually stunning. Amazing music. Winona and Keanu ruined it for me. Somehow Anthony didn't seem on his game either. But I still own and watch this film so it's not all bad.
Yes. But is it truly a love story. Or does he seduce Mina for his own sinister reasons. I'd like to believe it's a love story. But...hard to say. Only Dracula knows his own heart.
Today I still remember what I felt back in 1992 when I saw Dracula 2 weeks after its theatrical release. This movie is a masterpiece! SANGUIS VITA EST!
I'm a relatively recent subscriber, and I feel like I've really been missing out. I Love a lot of the films you've covered and It's really great to see them explored in your unique and informative style. I just wanted to thank you for the honesty and effort you put into to the videos on your channel, it's easy to sense and appreciate just how important films are to you and it really is refreshing to see someone as moved by these productions as I am. Also I agree 1000% with you about everything you had to say about Dracula, not only is it my favorite Vampire movie, but Gary is my absolute favorite actor... I mean, have you seen True Romance? The guy can literally play any character, exquisitely. Lol. Thanks again, and I wish you much continued success, my brother.
Umm ... Yeah! I think a majority of us already knew about Annie Lennox's song. Doesn't it play during the end credits? And yes, it does go with the theme of the movie.
I was a sophomore in high school when this came out! Fell in love with the movie *AND* Gary Oldman! And 20+ years later, my daughter brought me the Old Count Funkco Pop … I love it 😍
Bonus fact 1: Even though the movie is called "Bram Stoker's Dracula", the movie has a little to do with a book. Only plot points are names of characters & Dracula's trip to London. Everything else is brand new material created exclusively for the movie. Bonus fact 2: There is no CGI in the movie. Everything you see are practical effects. Coppola limited himself, because he wanted to make a movie the same way movies were made circa 1897.
Are you sure you've read the book? Because I have and the movie parallels the book rather well. Although there are some scenes in the movie that are not in the book. The overall story is quite there though.
@@1pcfred Biggest difference between the book & the movie is why Dracula comes to London. In the book he comes to London to buy a property & in the movie he's drawn to London because of Mina, who's Elizabeta reincarnated. Also in the book Dracula doesn't turn into a werewolf-bat thing.
@@Djordje_Jovanovic in the book and movie the same general things happen. Harker, Lucy, Mina, Van Helsing, and Dracula all have the same interactions with each other. The movie is clearly based on the book. With the movie they did take artistic license to make the product more appealing to a modern audience though. Which is not a bad thing to do. It gives us a work we can better enjoy. In the book Dracula certainly transforms too.
@@1pcfred - Are you sure you've read the book? I've read the book over 100 times, written papers on it, studied it and the author. Just because the movie used the same characters and a few lines does not mean it's faithful to the plot or the intent. In the book, Dracula came to London to find a new hunting ground. The people where he was from knew about him and took steps to stay safe. London was a whole new world of possibilities for destruction. In the movie, he came to find his eternal love and everything he did was with that noble goal in mind. In the book, Dracula was incapable of love and chose Mina as a way to distract the men and to pay them back for trying to kill him. He picked the woman he knew they all cared for because he knew it would hurt them the most. It was a dispassionate, vengeful choice meant to inflict the most damage. Nowhere in the book does it talk about Dracula having a wife or loving anyone. It was a plot device that Coppola used so he could reimagine the story into something different, a supernatural love story. He took an evil demon, bent on destroying love and all things good, and turned him into a sympathetic, dark hero. This movie is nothing like the book. The movie wasn't bad, but other than using the same characters, I don't see how it's like the book.
I definitely love this movie. Coppola and Oldman really did make Dracula a sympathetic character, and the supernatural/gothic-romance of the movie is wonderful. My mind simply refuses to let the Harker performance interfere with my enjoyment. Also, this movie had one of the most terrifying werewolfs, ever! C'mon! That demon bat/wolf/beast thing in the maze frightens the crap out of me!
As great an actor as Gary Oldman is, there's one role he wasn't able to top the original performance, and that's Jonathan Harris as Dr. Smith in _Lost in Space,_ who was a very tough act to follow: ua-cam.com/video/x-leHDr_kW8/v-deo.html Billy Mumy on Harris as Smith: ua-cam.com/video/3n8fV_rj3sA/v-deo.html
I first saw this movie at the age of about 10 in theaters. And today it is still 1 of the greatest movies ever made. Simply a masterpiece. I can't count how many times I've watched this movie. Every time I watch it it feels as if I'm watching it for the first time and I enjoy it the same way I did in the theater back in the day.
Bram Stoker's Dracula is my favourite version of the Dracula story in film version. For me it's a tragic love story with a Monster as it's main antagonist. Great film, great video too Minty 👍
"I have crossed oceans of time to find you." One of my favorite lines in all of cinema.
My favorite line too. And Oldman says it with such seduction. Gives me chills
"Mr Morris, your bullets will be useless, he must be beheaded! I suggest you use your big bowie knife!" "Well, I wasn't planning on getting THAT CLOSE Doc." :::Van Helsing laughs::::
AGREE!!
I loved that line and the way he says it.....the yearning and sadness he feels for his loss and now finding her again....
Dracula had game game.
You forgot to mention Tom Wait’s brilliantly creepy rendition of Renfield.
He was great! For some reason, Renfield is one of my favorite characters in the Dracula story. Not sure why, but somehow he speaks to me.
Care for an oeerrrrrderrrrve?
Totally. He was plain creepy in that role, he nailed it. His lines and behavior are outright disturbing.
Yes, master.......🦇
He was superb!!
The costume design and the set design on this movie are both incredible.
I thought the brightly coloured cowboy outfits that Dracula wears when he's in 1890s London were absurd. And then I learnt - from a fashion design type - that kind of get up actually was the fashion among the swell set at the time. They really, really did the research.
Yes, there are some great yt videos about the costumes and set design
@@harbl99 of course
Yes, I loved the plastic suit of armor.
@@harbl99 the costume designer was phenomenal. RIP to her, she made beautiful pieces. A true talent honestly.
This was such a great movie, Gary Oldman needs a lifetime achievement award for all the great rolls he played but the entire cast was amazing in B.Ss Dracula.
Yeah. He's amazing.
Dude!?
Roles
Oldmen yes but Keanu Reeves did some of his worst acting in this film, the English accent he butchers then puts through a mincer.
Reeves as an Victorian Englishman was pretty weak but thats a popular oppinion. Carey elwes would of been a better fit to play harker imo.
Don't forget fight choreography! =)
Wow, I have commented EXACTLY the same thing!
@@zenitpro Weird! I was just commenting on ANOTHER video about the virtues of practical effects! Word up! =)
check out Christopher Lee
I can only say one thing: Gary Oldman, what a genius (and Winona Ryder for making this happen)!
Towards the end of the movie he gets better alot better in my opinion
He should have get an Oscar for his performance!! 😉
This movie affected me so much I can still remember the day I first saw it clear as day. By far my favourite vampire movie.
Still reckon (DRACULA-UNTOLD) WAS a better version tho.
It’s the best. I’m glad I got to see it in the theater when it came out.
One thing I do know .. when I watched this the first time and saw the 3 vampire ladies "having fun" with Keanu.. I just thought "That's how i want to go".. or with a grenade and Vasquez in an Air vent 😁
And one of them is Mónica Bellucci!
You always were an asshole, Hansen.
Have you ever been mistaken for a man?
@@nikkifennel AKA why did it take another 10 years for her to be in a American movie.
@@robertfleischmann4119 "Right, right, someone said aliens, she thought they said illegal aliens and signed up." That's actually TRUE.
I love the look of the movie. It was impressive to know that all of the visual effects in the movie we're all done in camera.
Practical effects will always be better and age better than shitty cgi
Gary Oldman was so skilled in this role that he managed to make his character sympathetic.
My own only gripe with that is that Dracula isn’t a sympathetic character and kind of ruins him a bit...
@@christianbjorck816 The secret to portraying ‘bad guys’ is that their actions are fully justified in their own eyes.
Yea I guess I would like to reunited with the love of my life as well to.

“The luckiest man that walks the earth is the one that finds true love.”
Gary Oldman was so evil that he was stellar in this performance 👏
Gary Oldman and Johnny Depp are two of the best character actors in the world and I’m so jealous of Winona Rider for being able to work with them both in the 90s
Underrated. Always loved this movie, especially the score by Wojciech Kilar.
I don't mind Keanu as much as I used too; Harker is supposed to be a dull, normal guy. One thing that always tickles me about this movie too, is that there's a novelization. Not a reprint of the original novel, but a book based on the movie based on the book.
That is so weird lol
Damn I literally just made a joke about this and it turns out to be true.
There are quite a few novelizations of movies that were based on novels 😬
The better to copy-claim on open source material with, my dear
I think it's written by the guy who helped write the script.
I love this movie and watch it many times. Oldman and Ryder gave magnificent performances
Yeah it’s awsome
He has played some great rolls, but he really shines while playing a croissant.
What I liked about this film was it used a universal approach to the vampire folklore. In many scenes Dracula is not just some aristocrat in a cape, but also a shape-shifting monster who takes on all sorts of forms. Vampires are seen differently throughout out world folklore and not all of them are human-like.
Definitely one of my favorite movies...the visual effects haven't age too bad on it but I still watch it whenever it's on TV
I really felt bad for Keanu, but any actor with a career as full as his is going to get mis-cast at some point in time.
Originally Johnny Depp was considered for the role of Jonathan Harker.
I'm sure Keanu was so thrilled to be cast by FFC. I can't blame him. It just wasn't for him. I'm not even an actor, but if FFC asked me to do a movie, I'd do it.
@@wasteland70

You: "Say Mr. Ford Coppola..."
FFC: "Francis."
You: "Oh...sorry...Mr. Francis Ford Coppola...Where is the rest of the crew and the other actors?"
FFC: "Who?"

FFC: "I was! I was totally gonna try to have sex with you!"
You: "It almost worked! I almost fell for it! You knucklehead!"
FFC: *Looks at the camera and shrugs*
That's exactly how it would go. Exactly.
I thought Keanu did OK. His character was supposed to be a doofus.
Coppola has a way at picking young people who will go on to do great things. The outsiders cast, Keanu & even his daughter though the latter 2 were awful when working with him
The first tragic, romantic vampire was Jonathan Frid's Barnabas Collins in the original Dark Shadows series. I just couldn't leave that untouched 😏
I was thinking the same thing when Minty was giving that title to this Dracula. And that was decades earlier.
I used to rush home from school so I could catch the latest episode of “Dark Shadows” on our black and white TV…✨
Absolutely ,Dark Shadows was definitely a turning point for this genre.Frank Langella’s version ,while not nearly as good, did bring a more sensual feeling to the character.
I loved Dark Shadows the TV show.
Yes. I loved the Dark Shadows stuff. And of course Jonathan Frid as Barnabas.
Costner’s Robin Hood definitely was a great version. My favorite in fact
Maybe Keanu wasn't the best for the role, but I still love him and Winona in this film😀- carrie

This movie also put Gary Oldman as one of my favorite actors, too. Anyone who has not yet experienced this movie, it's worth gathering your favorite food, beverages and loved ones to watch this amazing work of art.
Lucy (Sadie Frost) was way hotter than Mina (Winona Ryder).

Minty: "It's not a Horror-Movie per-say -"
Movie: features scene of three vampire women _eating a baby_ much to Harker's horror and disbelief while Dracula looks on and laughs menacingly.
Yeah...not a horror movie.
Remember Minty is Australian. They all got rocks for brains. He is funny as most Australians can be. However he keep bad mouthing Keanu. I am going to go over there and burn that country down.
@@KilrInstkX The weather may do that first. :(
So Blade was a horror film for its opening scene?
As someone who's read the book, I can honestly say this movie is almost one hundred percent accurate to the novel and I will always love that
Ya. Ive read it too. My dad has an original 1897 print of it. I read it as a kid and this film is an almost spot on adaptation.
The same with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
(This in a time where women were supposed to be quiet and submissive and stay in the background.) Stoker gave us a female lead who "had a woman's heart and a man's brain."
This movie was a weird tragic love story where the demon who was the dark hero is willing to fight for a wife that was no longer his (to the point where he'll kill her husband) and she betrayed her husband for him.
I've never seen Winona Ryder look more beautiful than in this movie. And that's saying a lot.
Agreed.
She brought life to the character
I like 'Bram Stoker's Dracula'. The Drac in this movie reminds me somewhat of Jerry Dandridge in 'Fright Night' given that in their younger human form they appear handsome, suave and charming. Which is all part of their deception of course.
I happen to be a fan of both films, and totally agree with you. But I gotta commend Oldman for his stellar performance. I watched the film back in the day in the movies, and I remember being blown away at that time, as a teenager!
Jerry was much scarier I felt. Cause there was nothing sympathetic about him
I'm thinking of Claes Bang in BBC's version. Decrepit old man becomes suave, handsome charmer, but a deadly predator is just under that veneer.
Jerry Dandridge is the epitome of the trashy vampire trope.
Reeves wasn't QUITE RIGHT for the part, but it really didn't ruin the movie for me. Still a classic!
Bram Stoker's Dracula is one of the all-time top 5 movies, for me. I've seen it 8 or 9 times so far, and never get tired of watching it. I love the story, music, cinematography, etc, so much.
As a love letter to classic cinema from a master its required viewing, as a horror/adaptation....flawed but fascinating.

Thank you. I wanted to ask about that because it looks like his artwork. I think it’s fitting. Wish I had known about it because I would’ve bought it. Bet it’s worth a lot of money now since this movie is having a resurgence of appreciation.

I have always loved Keanu in this role. He seems so young and "trying" to fit in and please. A perfect target for Dracula to toy with
Gary Oldman is beyond description.
Keep in mind that Minty is an Australian
One thing Minty did NOT Mention... is that to DO the role... Gary actually WENT to Romania to LEARN the Accent AND HOW TO SPEAK THE ACTUAL LANGUAGE!
Now THAT is preparing for a Roll! :D
I'm English and I thought it was You rythmics as well...
It is pronounced the same way everywhere, Minty just often pronounces things incorrectly.
He actually hired a vocal coach to help him recover his original accent at one point.
Upon seeing the scene of Wynona and Gary dancing around with all the candles surrounding them, ....
Am I the only one who's instantly reminded of The Police's "Wrapped Around Your Finger" video?
I always thought the same thing!!
The visual design of this film is still delicious! "Bram's" and "Interview" really dug into the decadent sex appeal of the genre, in body, gesture, and aesthetic. Nitpick as we fans may, they're both a high water mark in cinema vampire history.
Gary Oldman is the epitome of villains he played in his career.
??????
@@horysmokes3339 lol yeah, I'm trying to decipher that one myself.
Minty should do a review of Leon: The Professional (theatrical - the Director's cut is an ABOMINATION!), which is one of my favourites, where Gary Oldman gives a SUPERB bad guy performance.
@@danny8bit That's a good one
EVERYONE!!! of them.
:))) Oh and I am 100% sure that no nun in that time would be able to understand or let alone speak and write English....
nobody cares ...
The biggest novelty of this film is its reference to the real historical inspiration, Vlad.
Ok... Next: 10 things you didn't know about Dracula: Dead and Loving It
Heck yeah!
Along with Frank Langella's Dracula, the Gary Oldman version is my favorite. I definitely found myself rooting for Dracula and thinking Van Helsine (sp?) the monster. I was also totally blown away by the use of the shadows in this movie.
Minty, next could you please do X Things You Didn't Know About Mary Shelley's Frankenstein?
That is a great movie that truly captures Frankenstein!
@@chrisspiegel6799 , I agree. Like Bram Stoker's Dracula, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is very close to the original novel.
For me, Tony Hopkins is right behind Keanu here. Hated his performance, seemed to be channeling Al Pacino in his shouting phase.
@@horysmokes3339 hahaha your right!!! He was acting like Al Pacino. I never realized that
Apparently, the reason he kept the filming in America- was because he learnt from his nightmarish experience of location filming with ‘Apocalypse, Now’....
And the studio insisted the movie be filmed in Los Angeles.
The Eurythmics did an amazing soundtrack for 1984. It is very goth with a little bit of pop. The song "Julia" is haunting.
I've loved this movie since it came out. The soundtrack is awesome and I'll have to check but I think I still even have the comic.
One of my favorite 90’s movies. Winona at her most beautiful, Gary at his most amazing. A beautiful love story.
Who's neck are you going to bite, Dracula? EEEVVVVERRRYYYYONNNNEEEE
I wonder how many people will get the reference.
When the gang showed up at his castle to kill him Dracula was heard to say "Yo Clarence, is it White Boy day?"
LOL
They should straight-up do a movie about Vlad the Impaler a historical movie.
Its been done. Many times. In 2000 a TBS? Movie about him was decent. Dracula Untold 2015 was more backstory and good.
Going through my DVD collection again I see.
Maybe it’s because I’m Dutch and was quite young at the time I didn’t dislike Keanu in the movie. Even nowadays I don’t.
Wow.. When you said that Gary Oldman looked at pictures of his little boy, I broke.. That's so deep, I felt that hard..
Was Keanu really that bad? - im very picky, and i'm not offended by his performance
It was ok. Nothing to burn him at the stake for.
Yes, very wooden performance, but how does one play wooden stiff clueless with depth?
Didn't take me out of the movie.
It was a problem with common audience preconceptions about him. Apparently you need great actors to play young overwhelmed bank clerks out of their depth, not young and probably intimidated actors under great pressure to perform in a bound-to-be historic Coppola movie.
Poor bastard. He did a solid job and got slammed with mockery in Bill and Ted-ese... dude.
“I know where th’ Bastard sleeps!”
Yes he was that bad in it, and he couldn’t fake a British accent if you held a gun to his head.
I actually saw this movie in theaters when it came out
This is by far the best version of Dracula I've ever seen.
One of my favorites, a masterpiece of filmmaking. I don't mind Keanu, it would have been better with someone else though.
Love this film great film
Beautiful Movie, made me a fan of Gary Oldman.. Amazing Movie
Thank you for this Minty. 🙂
Alot I didn't know about this brilliant movie...., and now, I need to re-watch BRAM STOKERS DRACULA 💘
Gary Oldman should play tinky-winky in the live-action remake of Teletubbies
Wasn't expecting that.... Now I need this to happen!
One of my favorite movies of all time
One of my favourite horror films of all time.
Best love story ever.
Yes. But is it truly a love story. Or does he seduce Mina for his own sinister reasons. I'd like to believe it's a love story. But...hard to say. Only Dracula knows his own heart.
Some of the music sounds like the music in Salem's Lot.
Salem’s Lot had some very memorable scenes and the special effect of the ‘floating’ youngster vampire is so very disturbing!!!
I never get tired of rewatching this movie, it’s gorgeous.
I also think it is magnificent, this movie made me want to rewatch the movie and reread the book.
Believe it or not, I scored one of the highest scores ever on the pinball back in the day, and the game actually lasted like 6 minutes. :)
Today I still remember what I felt back in 1992 when I saw Dracula 2 weeks after its theatrical release.
This movie is a masterpiece!
SANGUIS VITA EST!
This is the best Dracula movie! Wonderful soundtrack! And no lame sequels to water it down.
I also have the comic (one book, now) and it's gorgeous!!!
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein seemed to be a sequel. Not as memorable or as good, but a sequel nonetheless.
Umm ... Yeah! I think a majority of us already knew about Annie Lennox's song. Doesn't it play during the end credits? And yes, it does go with the theme of the movie.
brilliant retelling of a classic story and Gary oldman at the top of his game.
Also goes by the name Alucard which is Dracula spell backwards.
I saw this as a sixth grade after I read the book. My classmates were jealous because it was beautiful. It was amazing for the time period
I was a sophomore in high school when this came out! Fell in love with the movie *AND* Gary Oldman! And 20+ years later, my daughter brought me the Old Count Funkco Pop … I love it 😍
Oldmans Dracula eats those modern
Soft and weak "vampires" for lunch!!
Too cool ty
The book was a stunning tribute to a woman who was so amazing and strong that men that didn't even know her were willing to give up their very souls for her.
Not to mention that in the book Mina wasn't a reincarnation of Dracula's wife, she always saw him as a monster.
Who the heck is Rinoda Ryder? I nearly lost my mind every time Minty pronounced "Winona" as "Rinoda"!; And he does it Every single Time!!
Such a beautiful soundtrack too. Pure tension and emotion. Perfect fit
Shaggy and Scooby-Doo would be scared like crazy when they end up meeting him.
I will cry the day I see "10 Things You Didnt Know About Virus" LOL
🤣🤣
I definitely love this movie. Coppola and Oldman really did make Dracula a sympathetic character, and the supernatural/gothic-romance of the movie is wonderful. My mind simply refuses to let the Harker performance interfere with my enjoyment. Also, this movie had one of the most terrifying werewolfs, ever! C'mon! That demon bat/wolf/beast thing in the maze frightens the crap out of me!
This romanticizing of Dracula definitely pave the way for the twilight series.🧛♂️
Definitely
Lovesong for a Vampire is one of those songs I look up from time to time on UA-cam... Hauntingly Beautiful.
"Winona Ryder purchased the rights for Drcuala"
So she didnt shoplift them then
I was thinking something like that as well ha ha
STFU
Wow, I remember that incident now! lol!
Keep up the good work Minty.. your videos have been getting us .. through this Pandemic... Much respect from Wash DC/USA 👍
Gary Oldman is by far my favorite actor. He could literally do anything!
I'll never forget his portrayal of Beethoven in Immortal Beloved. I think the man IS Beethoven.
@@wardka Also his portrayal of Drexl in True Romance… Just unreal. There are actors and then there is Gary Oldman.
As great an actor as Gary Oldman is, there's one role he wasn't able to top the original performance, and that's Jonathan Harris as Dr. Smith in _Lost in Space,_ who was a very tough act to follow: ua-cam.com/video/x-leHDr_kW8/v-deo.html
Billy Mumy on Harris as Smith: ua-cam.com/video/3n8fV_rj3sA/v-deo.html
Keanu Reeves tried to pull off a British accent but he just failed.
I think he took lessons from Dick Van Dyke.
@@blethigg9320
I think I prefer van Dykes fake accent lol.
Love your content mitty! I would love to hear about another great Oldman movie immortal beloved! He did an awesome job portraying Ludwig van!
I second this!! I love that movie
