The mystical ruins of Hölnstein Castle and the caves beneath it can be found in a forest high above Stetten unter Holstein. The castle, which is also called Höllstein or Holstein, was probably built in the 11th or 12th century.
A hike to the ruins is worthwhile for all explorers and history buffs. From the castle you have a beautiful view over the valley and there is also a fireplace.

    ------
In a forest, high above the village of Stetten unter Hohlstein in Baden-Württemberg, lie the ruins of Hölnstein Castle.
Since some time has passed since the last partial renovation, nature has taken over large parts of the rather large castle complex again. Nevertheless, there is still a lot to see.
Large parts of the surrounding wall with the castle gate, as well as remains of the residential tower and other buildings have been preserved. Furthermore, there is a vaulted cellar and a well to discover.
Furthermore, there are several caves underneath the castle. These are another show value for the visitor. Whether they served as a camp or for another purpose is not known. Unfortunately, nothing remains of the pre-fortification of the castle.
Let's get to the history: The Hölnsteins are mentioned for the first time in 1098 in the chronicle of the Zwiefalten monastery. They were a family from the lower nobility and served different lords. In addition, there seems to have been a relationship with the lords of Melchingen and Lichtenstein.
Towards the end of the 12th century, an Adilbertus Holinstein is mentioned in writing as a servant of Count Luiholt von Achalm. In 1274 a Berthold von Hölnstein appears as a witness in a document of Count Hartmann von Grüningen.
There is disagreement about the date of the construction of the castle. Some sources state that it was built in the 11th century. Others report that it was built in 1275, but the oldest parts of the masonry seem to date back to the 12th century.
How do the different statements come about? Was there a wooden predecessor in the same place in the 11th century? Was the castle rebuilt and extended around 1275? Unfortunately, no answers to these questions can be found so far.
Hölnstein Castle remained in the sole possession of the family until 1388. In that year Ursula von Hölnstein sold her part of the castle to Klaus Ungelter, citizen of Reutlingen. It is uncertain whether money shortage or family strife caused her to do so. From then on, parts of the castle were sold back and forth in short intervals until Count Jos Niklas von Zollern acquired the whole estate including the surrounding properties in 1474.
Jakob, the last male descendant of the Hölnsteins died impoverished as a commoner in 1496.
The castle is not mentioned again until 1574. At that time it seems to have been uninhabited or at least in a bad condition, because there is now talk of a castle stable. In that year, Count Eitel Friedrich IV von Zollern had the keep demolished by journeymen masons from Bavaria.
In the following centuries, Hölnstein Castle fell into disrepair.
In 1985 the ruins were partially restored.
