If you keep having trouble with mobs destroying the workbenches on the tar pits, maybe try campfires or torches instead for spawn prevention. I think mobs are less likely to destroy those.
They had food before though, the issue is think was that they need open sky to breed, or at least a very tall roof. They also need a lot of space so that pen will only house 4 at a time
