    Hey Drew!
I don't think I really agree with "Oversaturation" being a cause/related to a sneaker's ability to become a "Classic". Many of the sneakers that are considered "classics" i.e. Air Force 1s, Jordans, Chuck Taylors, Stan Smiths, Shell toes, etc. are mass produced and widely available but still are able to retain that "classic" position within pop culture. In my opinion, what allows a model to become a classic is the versatility of the silhouette and its longevity of relevance within pop culture. Can it be easily adapted to various styles? Can it be worn for a variety of activities? Is it sold at an affordable price to reach mass consumers? And will it outlast the trend period it was born into to remain relevant in the sneaker space?
I think what's stopping shoes like the dunk (vs. stan smiths, vans) or 550s (vs. the AF1, shell toes) from becoming classics is that they draw many characteristics (affordability, silhouette, price point) from pre-existing models that already exhibit those same characteristics AND are already established as "classics".
But, in the end we won't really know if any of these models will become classics until we look back 10 or 20 years from now. Hard to say given how fast mass consumer taste/trends move these days.

I would say that the dunks and 550s are "trendy classics", as in they define a moment in the sneaker market and a general style but could be used past its peak without it looking out of place

  • @BertoBeats

I think it's really weird that we're talking about 550s as if they're "new" when they're just revived from 1989. They're already a sort of classic in that way, it's not easy to pull a shoe from 30 years ago out again and make it hot. I'd say shelltoes and sambas are classics too, and they're not "popular" anymore.

considering the 550 only really started gaining the traction it did after the ALD collabs, it really is just an overhyped shoe. I love newbalance, they're comfortable and I always feel like I'm getting my moneys worth, and the 550 has such great color blocking potential, but it went from sitting In warehouses to $300 asking prices on ebay so fast that I really think the hype is what drove the sales rather than the love for the silhouette.

    • @Rum0r
      @Rum0r 2 роки тому +2

@@xXcangjieXx I mean that it wasn't an immensely popular shoe when it came out, it fell into obscurity. The 550 wasn't like your standard Chuck Taylor that basically everyone from rockers to dads wore. How many people have you seen talking about the newbalance 550 before they brought it back in the same way that someone would another shoe that's been relevant for ages? I'm almost certain that if they brought back the newbalance 550 as just a standard release, it wouldn't have gained as much hype. I think the only reason we saw even general release 550's like the UNC blue or the Black and White "oreo" colorway sold out by bots in minutes and were being immedietly resold on ebay (trust me, I was there for every drop) Is BECAUSE of the ALD collabs. Everyone wanted a pair of 550's because they were the hot new shoe, not because they actually wanted 550's
Also, i love newbalance shoes, i own about 7 pairs of different colors and variants, they've been the main shoe that suits my weird ass wide foot and the one shoe where it feels like I'm paying the 3 digit price tag and it almost entirely goes into the quality of the shoe.

My parents always did triathlons and other sporty events when I was little, and they always had running shoes with big mesh and silver accents on them. Mostly new balances and ASICS, so I ended up getting a pair of gel kayano 14s about six months ago in honor of them. They were constantly shoes with those design cues, and wearing them takes me back to hot summer days and cheering at the finish line of a triathlon as a 6 year old in 2007.

i like to think if the 550 is done right it can easily become a classic . it's iconic look, with a good readily available colorway could make it a classic . but that's exactly what it's lacking i would say that could be the cream and black . don't have a pair but that pair is such a nice colorway. seeing it's path right now it will stay a trend shoe even though it has such a nice iconic look that has put it on the map of well known shoes.

I don't think oversaturation is the issue for the 550 I think it's the lack of a defining coloraway. If you think chucks you think black with white trim or white with the red/blue lines or black vans oldskools or white green trim stan smiths. All of those shoes have every color under the sun available but they're still classics because of the strong base shoes. Even from the ALD collab I find a hard time defining the "main" ALD 550 in my mind.

If anything I'd argue that the grey 574s with the white laces will end up being more iconic than the 550s. The 574s are a far more accessible shoe whereas the 550s aren't as readily available to the average buyer. Also in my opinion, the 574s have better colorways. I've seen pairs that are just normal navy, dark green, or even burgundy that offer a nice color that isn't overly gaudy like some of the 550s. Not to mention a pair of 574s are more affordable than the 550s; especially when you look at the resale market

I think it’s important to differentiate between hype, classic, and iconic.
Hype is hype. Here today, gone tomorrow. (Roshe, Ultraboost, and HOT TAKE: most collabs)
Iconic is a shoe that is instantly recognizable, especially for an era. But they don’t always become classics. (Foamposites, 990 series, Yeezys)
Classics are shoes that were cool when they were created and just as cool, if not more, now. A shoe that’s by in large timeless. (Jordan 1, 574, Stan Smiths, Chucks)

Back then everyone had the chucks, everyone had the dunks, everyone had the rockstars etc. The half life of trends is just extremely fast now. IMO, I do believe the 550 will become a classic as long as NB strategically drops their products. I would hate for them to fall into the waterfall of fast releases. However, Teddy Saints is also the CD of NB and is the owner of ALD. So the ALD brand will always have a tie with NB because that is brining in NB a ton of money. I do think social media may have this shoe come in waves saying it’s cool then it’s not cool. Overall the 550 and NB is more of a stylish shoe brand than Nike. People who are in professional attire for sometime do actually wear them in a stylish way to keep it professional and comfortable.

When I think of sneaker/shoe nostalgia, I think about the chunky af DC/Etnies/Adio kinda shoes of the early 2000s. All the "rich" kids repped Nike shocks, if I remember right, but the only people who cared/talked about shoes were the skater kids, and I dunno- something about that style+era honestly feels more "classic" to me than the shocks tbh, but maybe that's my own wannabe-skater nostalgia talking.

Honestly think people got bored of 550 cuz they been pumping them out and we’ve seen this with yeezy. Once everyone can easily obtain them people want to move on to the next “exclusive”. To me its fking great cuz i still think the 550 look great on feet. I rock reg fit pants most of the time so having these some what bulky shoe help tie the fit together. Still looking weekly to find a steal on someone past ald the green and yellow joint lol

The Dunk is a strange one, because it constantly falls in and out of popularity. I think it mainly depends on the state of Nikes influence at any given time. The 2000s saw popularity among collectors with OG collabs (DOOM, Tiffany’s, Red Lobster, De La Soul etc.) then the model seemed to fall off. Almost a decade later it was brought back mainly by the Travis Scott collabs and became super popular among the mainstream until the Astroworld incident happened. That’s when AJ 1 and Dunks seemed to no longer be the shoe of choice.
As for the 550 I personally don’t see it sticking around aside from staying in the rotation hardcore collectors and enthusiasts.
    For the PVV:
The Air Uptempos and the Jordan 12’s. I remember being a kid in the 90s and everyone had those. I wanted them soooooo bad, but just couldn’t have them 😭😭😭. Being an adult now I couldn’t care less about either of those sneakers cause all I wear is 990s now 🤷🏾‍♂️

Stan Smith is oversaturated but still a classic.. The difference I believe is that some shoes are iconic because of how the culture of that shoe was established back then. You can say that to the all-stars, stan smiths or even the samba. The reason people wore them was it was easy to style and looks good with different outfits. The most recent classic is the ultraboost and NMDs because it was established as the shoe for athleisure style. I do believe these 550 would die off. Only time will tell.

Drew do you still wear your ALD 550s? I'm curious and if you do and which colourway since I know you have featured the red/navy and the yellow/green colourway.
As for are the NB 550s a classic? Imo not yet because I just don't see them on people that much. I consider a classic sneaker something that is mass produced, relatively "cheap", easily obtainable and worn by many like Air Force 1s, Chucks and Vans. They are all these things because they never go out of "style". Also monotone colourways help sneakers become "classics" hence the black Chucks, white air force 1s and black vans are iconic and easily identifiable.
I don't think the 550s have really hit the zeitgeist of the mainstream like a classic sneaker does, at least not yet. I do think one thing hindering it is that there is no distinguishable colourway of the 550s and the ALD collab is kinda niche, expensive and hard to find sneaker for it be a "classic".

Isnt the Nike Dunk vastly more popular than 550s? 550s are popular for sure, but even in its down years Nike Dunks are seen way more on feet at least for me. Pandas are basically the new AF1. Always wondered if you had a more empirical way of determining whats hot or not rather than your own perception, I feel like the resell prices of dunks speak for themselves, especially when you factor in how many restocks the pandas have gotten just this year

    • @DrewJoiner

Don't buy regular white on white Air Force 1's or Stan smiths because the quality is terrible. You can now get better quality versions of the white on white Air Force 1's for the same price as regular ones (I'm referring to the recent AF1 fresh white and color of the month releases, the and the craft version isn't bad either)
