Almost 18 years back I went to a concert of this duo in Singapore. The concert was supposed to be from 7pm to 9.30pm. They continued with the concert until 10.45pm. Kadri Goplanath said he is not feeling like stopping as the audience was so excellent and encouraging. I can never forget that concert.
It shows great mental and cultural flexibility for people of the South Asian region to have enthusiastically taken up Western instruments such as the harmonium, the violin, and here, the saxophone, and successfully adapt them to their completely different musical tradition. By comparison, traditional musical styles in China and Japan seem to have rejected "foreign" instruments.
That was then, this is now. I was talking about modern (post 19th century) China's failure to adapt Western instruments to their traditional music, as the Indians have done.
Sorry, you are incorrect..at least about China. Check out modern classical orchestras, esp. Cantonese music. You should do more research before making such statements.
Being a kannadiga from Mangalore, he spent all his life in Chennai, initially staying in Luz area in Udupi hotel. That is how he spoke in Tamil. His relative was my professor in college where I graduated. Once again sahasra pranam.
The combination of Kadri Gopalnath (Saxophone) and A Kanyakumar (Violin) is perfect and both walked on the same pitch throughout. But, the percussionists could have done much better. Pleasing and wholesome music.

It would appear Dr. Kadri is not satisfied about his percussion artists' performance. Frequently waking them up to get up to speed. , With the Mridangist still 'fiddling' with his instrument, well into the middle of the song....,cursing himself for not bringing his other mrudangam... While the thavil guy was still being prepped like a boxer into the bout. the thabela guy appears like he came expecting to play for a different concert until it all began, when it was all too late, to walk out ...!! LOL ..!

In China forein (indian, persian etc.) instruments were adopted much more earlier, before Tang dynasty. Search for "huyue" (胡楽).
