  • Super excited to bringing everyone the first lesson in the new Kotlin series on building the UA-cam application for Android. Let's start off by learning how to build the most common component in mobile applications: a list. To do this, we implement a RecyclerView component which is the successor to ListView. It can be a little tricky to fully understand how it works, but it should come naturally in just a few tries.
    Essentially, RecyclerView enforces the ViewHolder pattern that comes from best practices using ListView. If you want a lesson on that, please watch this video here: • Android Kotlin: Essent...

    I don't want to be misunderstood but there are many MANY kotlin on android tutorial videos on internet, many have no sound or a difficult Indian accent. English is not my main language so it's hard to understand many of those videos. Also so many of them still use java idioms. This playlist, this channel, it's godsent! Thank you very much. As a Python developer I recently picked up kotlin for a PyPI Browser project. Kotlin is extremely easy to learn but Android API is far from trivial, it's huge, messy and with java it was like drowning in a hell pit. This playlist was 10/10. I'd donate for new episodes.

    For anyone getting that the MainAdapter is not implemented error I got it working by removing the question marks ("?") from the two functions - not sure what this will cause down the line.
    override fun onCreateViewHolder(parent: ViewGroup, viewType: Int): CustomViewHolder {
    val layoutInflater = LayoutInflater.from(parent?.context)
    val cellForRow = layoutInflater.inflate(R.layout.video_row, parent, false)

    I just finished all 6 episodes and learned more than I expected! Along the way I updated the code so that it runs once again (including the latest libraries and the new view binding method as Kotlin synthetics and findViewById are deprecated). It runs on my Samsung Galaxy A7 Lite tablet. I've put it out on github (github.com/Janodi/RECYCLER_VIEW_EXAMPLE) in case someone else might find it useful. The code comprises the completed example through Ep 6. I am new to Android, so it might have been written more efficiently : ) Thank you Brian for a great tutorial.

      Yep I wrote a lot of java code back then for server side and android. Kotlin is similar to converting from objc to swift. I might make a video comparing all these languages together.

      You probably want to download the sample code, it should work even if its a few years old.

      @@LetsBuildThatApp found my problem after some google search. It turns out i have to remove some "question mark" in the adapter from my code because of the newer update(?). Nice video by the way, subscribed right away 🤣
