Especially in the medieval period the city developed as an mediterrannean powerhouse and became a powerful maritime republic with many Genoese colonies and trade posts in France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey and the Middle East. The city became very rich because of these possessions and trade routes. Some highlights of the city are the historical centre with Piazza de Ferrari and the XX Settembre Street, the Castelletto quarter and Porto Antico. Genoa has a population of 600,000.

I'm so glad I got to visit this Italian city almost 10 years ago. It's off the beaten path of of tourism or even business travel despite its size and importance. Sure, cities in Italy can look and feel so different from one region to the other but to me there was something so different about Genova. Maybe it's the lack of low-pitched terracotta roofs so prominent in around 80% of Italy (roofs are either dark gray or light grey, depending whether you're looking at slate or zinc, just like in Paris). Maybe it's the topography and how the city is terraced---the grade increases in layers as you move away from the coast. And since it's a very dense city, the terraced layout is very obvious. Also, the city has quite a few elevators and of course steps to constantly gain elevation in the city. And some of the elevators are the most unique things you'll ever see, such as elevators that travel both vertically and horizontally.
