I don't understand why our government doesn't care about animals. If a huge portion of the population does they should too.
DearPajamaParty A Euge portion of America's population doesn't care about wild animals much less domestic animals. Our government doesn't seem to even really care much about people in need.

I think they should certainly provide money or tax breaks to animal welfare organizations, and make sure they obey the law, but animal welfare is and should be a matter for passionate volunteers who do it for free out of love for the animals, and not some government bureaucrats who are just doing their job.
Those poor cats. They do not look very healthy right now. Especially that last cougar. Hope they start getting better soon.

So I guess the poor tiger, who got loose, was shot by some jackass? That's a shame. Thank you for giving these cats the better home they deserve. I'm sorry for the loss of the tiger.
It wasn't shot by "some jackass." The tiger got out and proceeded to maul somebody. Yes, the tiger got out due to the negligence of the handlers and didn't deserve to be shot but when it comes to a human's life vs an animal's life you have to be reasonable. They had to save the human from death, lol.
Cait I feel terrible for that tiger no matter what the circumstances. I tend to have more compassion for the tiger than humans. We're the ones destroying their habitat and trying to make super size house cats out of them. The population in the wild that took millions of years to evolve has been reduced from 100,000 to about 5,000 in little more than a century with several species extinct, one as early as the 1930s. If feeling the way I do makes me an asshole, guilty as charged.
I second that. Except that the one person the tiger was attacking deserved some help right then. Y'know?

Not necessarily some 'jackass' but probably by someone with animal control.. they said it got loose and mauled someone, and in that situation the animal has to be put down because it's a risk to the public. There was an incident in Ohio a few years back where like 40 or so lions, tigers, bears, wolves and other exotic animals were freed from their cages by a man prior to killing himself and what could the authorities do?! It takes too long for tranquilizers to work and that man who supposedly loved those animals gave them a death sentence. It's not the responding authorities fault for being put in that situation - makes me so mad that people who 'love' these animals are willing to put them in the situation where they have to be handled and put down; that is not love, it's selfish pride wanting an exotic 'pet'.
Exactly why just 'regular' people who want these animals as pets should not have them - they endanger them just being in their presence. A cat is a cat, is a cat and if a big one attacks a human / people then there's no choice. I'm just happy that BCR was able to help and give a good home to the others.
Rose Ella-Grace I remember about the jerk in Ohio who turned all his animals loose before killing himself. He obviously shouldn't have had them in the first place or at the least should have tried to find homes for them. Tigers may be apex predators but they are helpless against habitat destruction and high powered weapons. Any time an animal is killed for any reason it upsets me. Being a cat lover I'm particularly sensitive to them, big or small. However I would never in a million years want a wild cat of any species for a pet.We do have three regular domestic cats and they're just fine. Tigers belong in the wild although their life there can be hard. I feel terrible how badly mankind has decimated the wild tiger population either for sport, poaching or habitat destruction.
Nabisco...everytime that cat's name comes up I'm going think about cookies. I never pay much attention to bobcats, but Smalls is so cute. She planted her sturdy little legs on that rock as though to say "I'm mistress of all I survey".
Thank God BCR can take some of the cats. It must be awful trying to find a safe place for animals when a sanctuary is shut down.
Funny thing is they found out the names were wrong on their carriers and Smalls is actually named Nabisco!

I saw this on the news yesterday (10/17). It made me so happy to know they are now at BCR. They will get awesome care! Excited to see updates.
The news comes out to the sanctuary during big events like the rescuing of new big cats, and for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas enrichment.

Congratulations. I can't believe any kind soul would have such a heart to go out and travel to save vicious animals in danger. Sorry about the tiger who died. Thank you for giving these cats a good home. I have two of them myself, but they are house-cats; and I have truly come to love them.

Sounds like a big transition for everyone involved. I hope the director from the previous sanctuary comes out of all this physically healed and emotionally recovered from the tumult.
I hope it's not overstepping, just want to give a friendly tip to wonderful intern with the red bun/ponytail to consider keeping her upper back straight when lifting and setting down these heavy cats. Lifting with the back can take a terrible toll, especially over time, and it's best when we don't hurt ourselves in the service of helping others. :)
Thank you all for the work you do! And thanks to the sanctuary that was closed. They may not have been able to keep up to standards, but these big cats were able to make it through until Big Cat Rescue could retrieve them.

It's always sad to hear of a wild animal killed because they injured their keeper when it's obviously not the animal's fault. Good to know you guys were able to take these cats!

I'm Happy...
South Dakota has had some appallingly lax laws about exotic animals. Every fall they used to have an exotic animal auction, with everything from lions and tigers to bears, bobcats, and emus. One guy who had several tigers used to let his 8 year old son "play" with the big cats, until 2 maulings which resulted in the child's hospitalization got lawmakers attention.

Poor tiger, got out because human was stupid? greedy? did NOT do the right things. Then tiger takes all the blame and is killed. It makes me very angry. THANK YOU BCR for doing the right and compassionate things.
