    When I saw the announcement about Marco Casali's VISION E Superyacht I was intrigued. Marco is one of yachting's most successful designers and has a keen awareness of the importance of pushing the industry towards sustainability. I called him to ask for more information, and this is what I found out.

    WoW, here i was thinking that many of us are 'pushed' into catamarans for solar solutions (Silent and SunReef) and now there is this mono-hull solution. I love it, love the design, love the cross breeze option and it is just bloody amazing to look at. I loved the historical insight, learned something again, thanks for that David.

    • @EdwardTilley
      @EdwardTilley 2 роки тому

      Just curious about what's wrong with catamarans? Wider, shallower drafts, much more efficient at sea, and no call for energy-sapping stabilization. The cranes that remove them from the water are cheaper as well. What is the downsize of a superyacht catamaran?
      Other than an occasional side-rolling sea, I can't think of a downside (to catamaran) - unless they just don't fit in marinas or between bridge spans? They have to be a little less-tall & more wide, which means they fit under bridges better too.

    • @patrickabas1112
      @patrickabas1112 2 роки тому +1

      @@EdwardTilley the part that you say 'whats wrong with ..... 'is purely in your own mind. Nowhere in my statement was anything negative about cats. I only mentioned that till now there was only one option. Now we have two! and for your info i love Sunreef.

    • @EdwardTilley
      @EdwardTilley 2 роки тому

      @@patrickabas1112 Hmmm - I'm not giving you a hard time; I am asking because I am wondering which to prefer myself. When you mentioned monohull, it sounded like you have been waiting for this option to come along. As near as I can tell, stabilization and fitting into older marinas, is the advantage that monohulls have over cats. Cats are more efficient at sea. Now that the monohull decks are folding out for more width, they seem like the more stable and spacious vessels.

      @@RandomGuyRandomNumber The classification society is an interesting point. Cantilevered solar panels make a lot of sense, and I don't think I've seen anything on a large boat.

    Hi, it wasn't the Latitude act. It was the Longitude Act of 1714. Latitude was worked out relatively easily using the sextant and measuring the angle of the sun and stars to determine your Latitude. Longitude was the tricky one, needing the accurate timepiece to determine you longitudinal position around the globe when combined with speed and distance.

    This has a lot of options that I would really want. The opening doors along the side is something I've been wanting and also on multiple decks where suited to create more space and get that air through. I'm keen an a Silent Yacht maybe an 80 and also something like the Tatiana or Tankoa T760 Apache, this one is sort of something in between. Great to see more options out there like this one.

    I disagree. Wider is better because you can add on more solar panels and have more stability. That way you can have triple decks. This ship makes a ton of comfort compromises to get 14 knots.

    Another thing with swimming at anchor is that the yacht can swing around/change position at anchor and you might end up swimming back several hundert meters in unfavorable conditions. :D

      The back of the pool can be clearly closed with the rotating aft part, also the water level will be pushed higher than the sea one and the pool is clearly fully closed and protected in that way :)

    I would like to see a solar or other system to power a 55-60 motor yacht monohull. I just can't see enough real estate on a boat that size to capture solar. I don't think boats of this size can make the transition in the near term because you would definitely need a generator and diesel engine for redundancy and lithium batteries as a fire hazard on a boat would be of major concern to insurers and onboard safety. I think hybrids will have to remain until battery storage is made safe and solar panels can harvest more energy.

    I wonder if it could be an option to use the tender when docked as a trolling motor in case of main engine failure.. If the tender is electric then it could take a feed from the main yacht power and may give you a limp home option..

    I disagree with some of the thought processes for the Vision E.
    One of the benefits of solar power is unlimited power to use each day, within your panel's capacity, obviously.
    If you don't use it, you gain nothing.
    A boat with enough solar panels to move itself, which is the most energy intensive task on board, should be able to run all the other ships systems with ease, including filling a fresh pool daily and the AC.
    Don't get me wrong, I love the look and potential of this Vision E, but the benefit of solar actually increases the energy you can "waste" onboard, rather than cause a need to decrease energy usage.

    For yachts / ships synthetic fuel of hydrogen make much more sense. Provided those fuels are made with nuclear power. So there is no air pollution or CO2 emission generating the electricity. Solar will always be structurally unreliable. And can only at best produce limited power a few hours per day.

    You're almost there. Aquon has arrived so why is everyone so many milestones behind? Their yachts not only are solar powered, but they increase their battery system by 100 fold by using some electricity to turn sea water into hydrogen which is stored at 300 bar in tanks that when needed convert the hydrogen into electricity when needed. No diesel generators on board. I also keep waiting to hear the upgrades of solar to incorporate Perovskite cells which can increase efficiency by as much as 40%. If you are set out to make a world class catamaran that is independent from fossil fuels but still provide the ability to travel globally and be free of the hassles of sails, rigging, tacking, etc., step up to the next level. LEAD the way instead of playing catch-up to what everyone else is doing.

    David, Is there a standard maritime handbook with rules and regulations around the world? Like when entering certain waters are you expected to follow certain rules. Also when designing a yacht how can you find out what the maximum height, beam, draft and length can be. I realise there might be some restrictions depending on who is building the yacht and their facilities, but how do you know what bridges or ports/mariners can or can't handle certain sizes?
    Is there a standard maximum?
