@@QarthCEO Australia have not reduced fire control management in the scope of a legislative move as many people are claiming. However there are 2 factors that are impacting the ability to perform controlled burns. It's climate factors and funding factors 1) The window for being able to perform hazard reduction burns keeps getting smaller and smaller, Queensland have only been able to perform about 50% of planned burns within the last 4 years 2) Funding to the fire services (which are state run) have been seen. The labor government in QLD cut their fire funding by 13 million this year, NSW by 100 Million. These services generally recieve approximately 500 million or so dollars of state funding, so in the case of NSW, almost a 20% cut in funding. Data for Victoria is older but saw a slight increase in 2017. Also, if the look at the absolute shitshow the Liberal government in NSW has caused with the murray-darling basin and the drought affects this has placed upon NSW especially, and then downstream to states like VIC, it's pretty clear this reduction is a fuckup by state and federal Liberal governments, hence why Scott Morrison is being attacked, and rightfully so.
Thank you so much for covering our fires. This is so wonderfully accurate and a nice change to see from all the misinformation that is out there. The fires are the size of France and we have lost 9 billion trees! I'm part of ARC a wildlife collective and will be transporting much needed medical supplies into the area this week end. I'm hoping to do a video on the trip and show the wonderful generosity of not only Australians but people around the world. Firstly I would like to thank the Canadian firefighters for coming here when the fires were early on and staying over Christmas, missing this time with their families to put out our fires. We have since had firefighters from NZ and the US. The particulate is actually worse than cigarette smoke because it's less than 5microns and damages the surfactant on the alveoli causing not only respiratory issues but heart attacks. We've had horrendous smoke here in Melbourne and worse in Sydney and now there are reports of smoke in South America. Give your donations to any of the fire organisations, CFA or RFS, Red Cross, animal organisations ARC, Wildlife Victoria, Wires. I've done one video on the fires and will likely do more. Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart xx
Barluuu a lot of the bush land will struggle to grow back because most of it wasn’t just burnt, it was incinerated. Not to mention the fact the surviving animals now have to food
it’s sad that this hasn’t been getting much coverage in the mainstream media. i didn’t hear about the fires until people started posting about it online. it’s crazy that people still deny that climate change is real.
When I first read your comment about it not being in mainstream media I was like, What? That's all they have been showing, but then I remembered I am in Australia.
Actually the fires were caused by arsonists. They've already arrested over 200 people for starting brush fires. And the green agenda caused this by not letting people do controlled burns. Climate change isn't real and has nothing to do with this anyway. It's people and your idiotic green agenda.
@Panda Man no arsonists started numerous different brush fires across the country which burned out of control due to lack of management. Climate change isn't real it's a made up hoax to scare people into giving up their rights willingly. If the government takes three years to fix a mile of road wtf do you think they can do to change the weather?
Viewing from the state of Missouri and my heart aches to see the devastation, for humans and animals. Please continue to post updates; as MSM appears to avoid the harsh reality.
Aussie here - thank you so much for using your platform to spread awareness about the fires. Coming from someone who is from Sydney, Australia- this is amazing to finally get some coverage of how bad our fires are. Our country is on fire, we’re already experiencing so much and pray to God that these fires calm down with the small amount of rain we just had.
Billy Gollner m.ua-cam.com/video/ZkdMGfJz-wU/v-deo.html this is what our rural roads look like. Animals that couldn’t escape from there farms abandoned.
As someone who lives in a par of the country on the coast, these fires were actually terrifying. In my area they started as early as June/July and escalated very quickly. Less than 100 children attended school out of the 600 in November and our annual horse races were cancelled half way through, due to the jockeys not being able to see and the horses having respiratory issues. Friends of mine had to put their family’s number on their horse and let them run free. My stepfather’s friend was protecting his house and couldn’t hear his own dogs burning to death over the sound of the flames. My best friends father was out fighting these fires and was sometimes only given water and a nut bar for lunch, after working through the night and day. Our government did such a horrible job of handling this and I was honestly disappointed. If you stuck around till the end thank you. For caring months after the fires got out of hand.
Hello from UK. This is so sad and I feel powerless which is infuriating. Please can someone on this doomed planet who has the power to change things DO SOMETHING! What makes me more worried is our ignorance. I'm on the other side of the world, but I still feel like this threat is right next door. To people in Australia, the world is watching and praying for you x 💜
the mental health part of the video could've been bigger, IMO. the attitude for us aussies is that "she'll be right mate" in the face of extreme adversity like this. there is a tendency to never seek help for mental health issues because it's often seen as a weakness. we need to also work on removing the stigmas around mental health so that people who are at the forefront of these horrible experiences get the help they deserve.
bigpapadrew definitely feeling that. The lack of acknowledgement that climate change is not only real but man made is bad enough, but when you talk to family and friends and they DO acknowledge that this is a problem but have the attitude of “she’ll be right mate” or “I can’t do anything so why try” is part of the problem as well. Especially for mental health in those that are trying and feel like taking to brick walls when discussing the issues.
I had an out of control fire 10 minutes down the road from my house. My partner and I didn't even bother packing a bag. If we'd had the official call to evacuate, we would've gone, but it terrifies me how unterrified I was.

Thank you for raising awareness for us. It’s great bigger social media platform channels and pages are doing this - it really helps. Your assistance will not go unnoticed. Cheers.
All you can do, unless you are a fire fighter, is keep going as normal as you can. I was brought up in Northern Ireland during the troubles. Bombs and shootings on the news never stopped you going anywhere. An army road bloc might delay you, but you just have to keep living. The whole country would shut down otherwise. Obviously, if fire is coming your way, get out of the area. Hopefully the fire service gets whatever back burning they need done, and that you get rain where you need it.
Watch "Dominion" , it's available on youtube. This documentary is about animal agriculture in Australia. We gotta take action now because only we are responsible for what's happening now.
I literally only heard about the fires this month here in the U.S., and I'm astonished by the lack of coverage. I'm hoping everyone will recover and that the Australian government will listen to their people.
As a young Aussie, thanks so much you guys for making this video, you guys have such a large audience and this will bring so much awareness to what this devastation has and will continue to cause.
Meanwhile, where I am (Northeast US) it’s snowing hard yet only from one cloud-the rest of the sky is blue. We can end global climate change, though. But a global challenge needs a global response... and global unity.
I would love to have some of that snow here in Finland. It's already January and no permanent snow has fallen to the capitol region. You have to go quite a bit further north to get decent amount of snow for, for example, crosscountry skiing. 😔
The fires were started by arsonists. Over 200 have already been arrested. That and not letting people do controlled burns means plenty of fuel for the flames. Climate change is a bunch of bullshit and raising taxes won't change the weather anyway.
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. So many people don't realise how serious this is. Awareness is slowly being spread. Very important. Especially considering what these fires mean... I wish I believed in God. As an American I can say yeah, this is true. We routinely measure things out in the imperial measurement system, yet no one knows those precise measurements. Like if you asked a hundred random Americans to show you what a foot looks like your going to get a different answer each time
That's 1 extra pack on top of people already smoking on their own (although I doubt some may have taken a break for now), and it's also every man, woman and child in the affected areas - not just people with a penchant for lung cancer.
Not as you're led to believe. Australia burns because of arson and the green agency's that have prevented the cold season controlled fires. This fire was fueled by their stupidity not climate change.
@@Mkm-iv4sm No, they actually say at 1:15 that it was a direct result of climate change. Climate change didn't START the fires but it did help to ignite and spread them (as you said, with the help of ciggaretes and arson).
Aria ArJo The best to speak in this situation are the locals themselves and if you have someone living there with their families for long time you d know that controlled fires have been keeping this from happening , don’t take videos on internet or people who speculate . Talk to people who live there , their parents and grandparents lived there . Stop pushing climate change when your source are videos on internet
@@aridiott They push this narrative for further population taxation meanwhile the big polluters do whatever they want to the environment. Global warming is the next cash cow
@@Mkm-iv4sm I hope this is obvious to most people but the arson stuff is crap and has been bedunked. Arson /does/ happen - in fact a guy was arrested about a week ago very near to where I live as a high fire danger day was approaching - but arson is not even close to the prevailing cause. In the eastern part of Victoria we've had about 3 years of drought (personally we've bought 3 tankers of water this year when normally we're self reliant). The drought makes all the fuels in the bush available to burn and when dry lightening rolls through (and we've had 2 instances that I can think of in the past few weeks), it goes up in flames. As for the Greens, well they're not the ones in government, either locally or state. However if they were well planned burns are part of their policy!
*I live in Melbourne.* I feel like the amount of smoke that we, Australians, breathe in every day is definetely going to have an effect in the long run. Similar to the Hiroshima atomic bomb that still has it's effects through radiation, this might have ongoing effects in generations to come (respiratory/lung cancer etc)
Victoria is honestly lucky, because the bushfires there have stopped. the fires in victoria this year haven’t gone into metropolitan melbourne unlike in the 2009 black saturday bushfires, when a few houses were destroyed in the outer suburbs and also 2 or more nearby towns were destroyed. the bushfires did come close to the suburbs though.

1) The window for being able to perform hazard reduction burns keeps getting smaller and smaller, Queensland have only been able to perform about 50% of planned burns within the last 4 years
2) Funding to the fire services (which are state run) have been seen.
Going to check your video out.
I am also from Australia but I am in WA. We haven’t had serious fires like you. I am so sorry and just wanted to say thank you for you service.
The Wee Norn Iron Woman Thanks so much.. I’m only an amateur but improving all the time.. Hard when I only have an iPhone 5S

Although the forest will grow back, there are some rare species where the fires were. I wonder how many are gone forever.

@@cosmo9208 you're joking?
I second this
it’s sad that this hasn’t been getting much coverage in the mainstream media. i didn’t hear about the fires until people started posting about it online. it’s crazy that people still deny that climate change is real.
When I first read your comment about it not being in mainstream media I was like, What? That's all they have been showing, but then I remembered I am in Australia.
@@Aquagreen53 Same I only heard about this online! It's not even mentioned in my country's news! Hand in there, people :(
Well that's sad but what can we do about it...
I have been struggling healthwise because of the fires and am concerned I may have developed some sort of respiratory issue... to people out there - if you can afford it, please do not offer your thoughts and prayers, please donate. We desperately need help.
Coming from someone who is from Sydney, Australia- this is amazing to finally get some coverage of how bad our fires are. Our country is on fire, we’re already experiencing so much and pray to God that these fires calm down with the small amount of rain we just had.
I really hope the Australia fires stop. I hope you stay safe!

prawnz is it true that a satellite image of Australia is literally orange/red in some parts?
The world definitely needed to you two to cover this.
Also, you guys have been a big inspiration for me and my channel
Thank you!
We've been thinking/worrying about the fires all break. Glad to be back and able to make videos again.
Please keep making videos on the environment! you explain things far better than any other source I'm aware of
@@AsapSCIENCE what do you think the outlook is on global warming ?
If we devoted more of our resources now could we change this?
the mental health part of the video could've been bigger, IMO. the attitude for us aussies is that "she'll be right mate" in the face of extreme adversity like this. there is a tendency to never seek help for mental health issues because it's often seen as a weakness. we need to also work on removing the stigmas around mental health so that people who are at the forefront of these horrible experiences get the help they deserve.
bigpapadrew definitely feeling that.
Good points there but as an Aussie (with a capitol A) I'd just like to add my Point. Mix in a spoon of concrete in your cuppa and HARDEN THE F*CK UP.

I never thought an asap science video would make me cry. I feel so lucky as an Australian that my community isn't directly impacted by fires, and so upset that so many people I know are affected.
2:33 this scene made me cry
@Kellie Jones thanks for the info 😭, may his/her soul rest in peace. If you are from Australia then can you please keep us informed ?
Oh man I did put many effort to plant more and more trees
@joao marcelo de oliveira we can't expect any man to understand this issue correctly but we know that people will talk nonsense and give stupid ideas
@joao marcelo de oliveira the fires are the result of dry and hot climate pattern which eventually got worsened but the climate change which Trump, Bolsonaro and Australian PM oppose

Glad someone made a video on this.
The worst things for firemans in Australija is hearing the coala bears cry cause they are to slow to move, they hear them cry and its horrible and just they cant stand it. I hope austiralia recovers from this(coming from croatia). #PrayforAustralia

2:30 yeah thanks for making me cry!
Here with us Australians, we're still eating tacos, cooking steak and buying hot chips while our country is burning down, wow, we're crazy.
Zion Does Stuff Yeah, given how much steak contributes to climate change, you might want to rethink that! :)
Steak is good tho :( i want to help climate change
@@calebyao. Still going to need animal waste product to feed the soil growing crops, can't grow anything on nutrient deficient soil!

Yo, smoke is getting as far as Chile. Its been ""cloudy"" here for a while, which is NOT normal during these dates in Santiago
You're just virtue signaling. 'We need global unity" means nothing. Ok we are unified, what now?
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. So many people don't realise how serious this is. Awareness is slowly being spread. Very important. Especially considering what these fires mean...

And people say climate change doesn’t exist
I forgot that its summer in australia
Victoria is honestly lucky, because the bushfires there have stopped. the fires in victoria this year haven’t gone into metropolitan melbourne unlike in the 2009 black saturday bushfires, when a few houses were destroyed in the outer suburbs and also 2 or more nearby towns were destroyed.
the bushfires did come close to the suburbs though.
